THE MOST UBIQUITOUS BAND TEE OF THE '80s UNDERGROUND MUSIC SCENE.
PIC(S) INFO: METALLICA being the biggest offenders with 3/4 of the band featured in this post alone -- Spotlight on the many appearances of the world-renowned "Three Skulls" DISCHARGE tee rocked by '80s punks, metallers (SLAYER, KREATOR, Jairo Guedz of early SEPULTURA, SACRILEGE UK), & one J Mascis of DINOSAUR JR.
TEE OVERVIEW: "Visually striking, instantly recognizable, and beautifully designed. The DISCHARGE "Three Skulls" shirt looks every bit as impressive today as it did in the 1980s when it was worn on stages, album covers and in photos by everyone's favorites.
Negative Insight is proud to bring this epochal shirt back in print through the official license of Rainy from DISCHARGE.
Using a high quality master of the original artwork, we have meticulously reproduced these shirts in a way that exactly replicates the original 1980s essential. Every detail is matched: the shade of red on the DISCHARGE logo, the oversized dimensions of the design, and of course the detail on the image itself."
-- NEGATIVE INSIGHT (US-based hardcore punk zine/distro/record label)
Dis nightmare still @$!*#&% continues!!

It's times like these that I wonder how much fandom crossover Testament and Powerwolf actually have (besides myself and 2 or 3 people that I know of that like both bands), considering they run in different metal subgenres.
Powerwolf and Kreator I can see having some (both German; Mille Petrozza contributed to a cover album of Powerwolf songs; they once toured with Sabaton, whose fandom venn diagram with Powerwolf is nearly a circle).
Thoughts when:
Coming up with/thinking about/trying to work on Kinktober ideas
Realizing I will be seeing Powerwolf and Alex Skolnick within a month of each other for the second year in a row
Considering wearing a Testament shirt to the Powerwolf show and vice versa and see if anyone says anything

during physical therapy today I was the only person in the gym. had a seizure so minor I'm not even positive it was a seizure, then immediately after that happened a guy walked in, looked at the battle axe on my sweatpants, motioned to his kreator shirt, and started giving me a history lesson on them

That thing with your mom reminds me of my one job where they got all bent out of shape because my tattoo was peaking out and literally half the people I was interacting with had more tattoos than I did. It wasn't even a questionable tattoo either. It was a horse.
I love pulling out bands that no one knows about like Black Pantera (literally their name) They have this cool mix of Thrash and heavy funk that just works but they are all black Brazilians. I think some people categorize them as Afropunk or Afrothrash. I don't really care because I love their sound regardless of the category. They are like Parliament Funkadelic and Sepultura had a weird child with the funk guitar lines and the dropped bass sound. I do suggest listening to them just for the experience of the sound blending. They sing in Portuguese so get ready to translate. Fogo nos racistas (Fire on the Racists) is probably one of my favorites sound-wise.
That record store guy can suck it but I am glad the owner was there for you. I agree, especially because the artists aren't like that for the most part. I love Danger Danger so much. I know most people like the Danger Danger album, and so do I, but the Screw It! Album is so amazing.
Once I am out of anon jail, if you want to see any of my shirts or my battle jackets or anything, let me know. I am happy to post about them.
King Diamond has an opera voice and Abigail is literally the story of a couple in 1845. They are warned not to move into this inhereted mansion. The man meets a deceased relative as a ghost that shows Jonathan, the husband, the ghost's stillborn child, Abigail, in a casket. The ghost informs him that his wife's baby is possessed by the spirit of Abigail. The Ghost tells Jonathan he must immediately kill his wife, Miriam, to prevent Abigail from being reborn. The Ghost then tells the story of him and his wife from July 7th, 1777 and his wife's cheating creating an illegitimate child. In anger the ghost had thrown his wife down the stairs and killed his wife and child. The ghost had mummified Abigail, the unborn child. Then they go back to the main line and Miriam freaking out because there are omens everywhere. Jonathan then accuses Abigail of possessing his wife and the spirit reveals it has possessed the unborn child. In an attempt to save his wife Jonathan tries to lure the possessed Miriam to the crypt where Abigail's body is and then Abigail forces Miriam to shove Jonathan down the steps and kill him. Abigail is born and Miriam dies. The horsemen that originally warned the couple not to move in come back and find Abigail in her sarcaphagus eating something unmentionable (her own mummified body) and they grab her and imprison here in a forest chapel to prevent Abigail from ressurecting again.
Then there is Abigail II which adds to the story. It is all very Poe-esque, gothic horror with operatic voices and wild stage sets. To me, that is a musical/opera.
I saw Phantom and CATS once each when I was in elementry school. They were school field trips but I barely remember them, aside from CATS. We went to see it because we were performing it that year. I've seen Swan Lake before and I may have seen the Nutcracker but I don't remember, so I am not counting it.
There have been a lot of very nice musicians I have met over the years. (I do feel like this may really give me away. LOL) I met Death and Megadeth in the late 80s/early 90s when there weren't many female presenting people in those genres. I remember both of them being so welcoming and even shooing the older guys out of the way so I could get to them. Nick Menza really stuck with me as super sweet. I miss him a lot because of that experience. I still have his drumsticks he gave me. Chuck Schuldiner is the same for me. His death hurts because of that early positive experience that he made possible. Mille Petrozza, of Kreator, is another absolutely sweet person to meet. When I met Nile they spent so much time just hanging out with random fans in the crowd that the venue owner got mad and threw us all out of the venue. A lot of the Thrash/Death/Black metal musicians are so much sweeter than their stage persona might suggest, or that is my opinion and experience. A few have been sweet as can be and mischevious. I've noticed some of the ones that appear to have big egos/lots of pride in interviews or whatever tend to be really humble and thankful with fans. I felt like that was surprising to me with some that I had been warned were 'going to be jerks because they are jerks to everyone.'
I hear about bad interactions with musicians I had no problems with. Overtime I have learned a couple things about meeting musicians (and actors too to be honest) that makes everything better for everyone. The big one is usually the tour manager gives you directions that the musician wants followed. For example, the flow of meeting them or don't touch them unless they initiate it or you ask.. you know simple courtesy thing or the musician will tell you certain things are a no. Following those instructions can be really important. I always ask a musician for a hug and thank them whether they hug me or not. If I bring something to be signed, and there is time, they seem to appreciate hearing the story of the item, if it has one. I've had several tell me stories back about recording an album, or something in a photoshoot. It opens the floor and makes it more personable. Rudy Sarzo got super chatty about things and told me stories about Randy Rhoads and Ozzy or hearing Paul from Winger complain about how unbearably heavy the coat he wore in one photoshoot was. I see and have been told by several musicians, especially singers it feels like, that treating them like an object/idol/not a normal person is very uncomfortable and off-putting for them. It makes sense so, no matter how excited I get I try my best to treat them like I would anyone else. Does that mean I didn't cry on a couple, oh no, I have been that mess for sure with a couple. I've noticed that most people who have told me they had bad interactions either didn't listen to the manager or musicians wishes or tried to make demands on the musician.. or touched them when they didn't want to be or in a way they asked not to be interacted with. I've seen a couple musicians get downright pissed over people who didn't respect what they have asked, as they should imho. Boundaries are boundaries and need to be respected.
I haven't had too many bad interactions. I shake my fist at Tracii Guns in frustration. I've never met him but I have two pieces of L.A. Guns merch that everyone but him has signed because he never comes out with the others. Don Dokken gave me some ick vibes but he wasn't unpleasant. Amon Amarth weren't unpleasant they just didn't seem interested in interacting much with the fans for whatever reason. Maybe it was just the day I met them. Who knows.
Have you met any musicians? Do you have a bucket list of musicians (or other famous people) that you'd love to meet?
-Jake
I just don't get hypocrites, or people like the ones at your old job. That's especially weird, if they were fine with other people having loads of tattoos, surely one little tattoo on you shouldn't have been that big a deal.
I've never heard of that band, but I love that description and name. I'll have to check them out sometime. And the language difference doesn't bother me, even if it isn't translated. I don't understand why people get all up in arms over a song not being in English. God forbid you find out other languages exist, right?
Yeah, there are some artists (and people in general) out there who play into the "rock/metal is a boys only club" bullshit mentality but it's a very small amount. I've been a regular there for almost five years, so the owner and I are pretty close. That wasn't even the first (or only) time he's defended me from jerks. And in that scenario, another customer automatically started making fun of that asshole with me, so that made me feel better about it lol. I love Danger Danger too, I think their debut album is their best but Screw It! is amazing too.
Absolutely, I would love to see them!
That sounds like a really cool (and dark) story! Now I wanna listen to the album in full and probably will lol. And from the sounds of it, it is a musical/opera. I remember finding a post here once where the OP named the Queensryche album Operation: Mindcrime as their favorite musical and people gave them shit about it in the notes but like...it's a concept album and around the time of release, the band would play it in its entirety in concerts. That definitely counts as a musical in my opinion. Hell, I'd say it's one of my favorite musicals too.
Man, I'm jealous you got to meet so many musicians, and it's nice they were like that with you. The Chuck and Nick encounters sound so sweet, I bet you really cherish them. I've noticed that metal musicians and fans tend to be the nicest out of any other genre (despite many people claiming it's the opposite).
As for the "they were jerks to other people but nice to me" thing, it can depend on how that person treated them. Some "fans" can be invasive and rude when they get a chance to talk to anyone they're a fan of, because I guess they forget that their idol is...literally just a normal person like them. Not a god or object or anything. Not to mention some musicians just don't like being approached by fans. Doesn't inherently make them an asshole, they could have social anxiety, are afraid that they'll be treated weirdly, etc. And then these people have the audacity to claim that celebrity is an asshole, when all they did was get reasonably mad at how they were being treated/politely refused requests for a photo or hug/etc.
Those aren’t ridiculous demands in the slightest, I can’t believe people would break them. I assume that conversation flows more naturally and is less awkward if you just treat them like the human being they are.
I’m not an L.A. Guns fan, but from what I heard (and your statement just proves it for me), Tracii’s not the nicest guy out there. Even if some interactions didn’t meet your expectations, I’m glad they at least weren’t unpleasant.
Unfortunately, I haven’t met any yet. I would love to, and Slash is probably at the top of my list. Not just because he’s the musician I’ve admired the longest, but my irl best friend met him and said he was really nice.
What’s the oldest piece of band merch you own? If you don’t remember, what about the first you remember getting?
