With great sadness I learnt that Holocaust Survivor Esther Brand Stamfater passed away earlier this week. She was a remarkable lady. Born in 1929 in Krasnik, Poland, she survived the Holocaust by hiding in the forests with partisans. After her miraculous survival she met another survivor born in Ryki, Poland, they got married and together were able to get to Bolivia with the hope of one day getting to Brazil, where he had family. The World Cup of 1950 in Brazil provided that opportunity, he was able to get permission to come to watch the football, whilst here he started working and convinced the officials to allow him to continue working and bring his family. Together they built a beautiful family that became incredibly active and connected to communal life in Brazil. I had the profound honor of visiting with her in April and writing a letter together with her in our Survivor Torah. Her amazing grandson wrote to me this morning “My grandma left this world on Monday. I believe that maybe her last mission was to sign the letter from the tora… thank you very much.” There are sadly now less than 300 survivors left in Brazil and fewer every single day around the world.

May her memory be a blessing.

Today is the first time I've seen SJW translated to Norwegian so that's a thing.

I'm probably actually going to read that paper though cause basically it's a paper dedicated to like diversity of thought and debate.

I also saw Judith Butler cited (in a different article), they were on the front page. And there was a two pager on Palestine, which was a debate response to a Danish journalist. The article was basically about how Norway isn't doing enough and is not as pro palestine as the Danish journalist (Krasnik) claims. (edit: Krasnik's an editor on a paper I think)

So yeah, I assume it's actually a place of political discussion and variety. But idk I'm basing this on skimming one paper and reading wikipedia. if you know anything about the newspaper Dag og Tid you're welcome to tell me anything.

Krasnik voted to be “free of L.G.B.T.” two years ago to satisfy conservative voters. Now, the mayor regrets the move, which has led to censure from other European countries and put funding at risk.

When local councilors adopted a resolution two years ago declaring their small town in southeastern Poland "free of L.G.B.T.," the mayor didn't see much harm in what appeared to be a symbolic and legally pointless gesture.

Today, he's scrambling to contain the damage.

What initially seemed a cost-free sop to conservatives in the rural and religiously devout Polish borderlands next to Ukraine, the May 2019 decision has become a costly embarrassment for the town of Krasnik. It has jeopardized millions of dollars in foreign funding and, Mayor Wojciech Wilk said, turned "our town into a synonym for homophobia," which he insisted was not accurate.

A French town last year severed a partnership with Krasnik in protest. And Norway, from which the mayor had hoped to get nearly $10 million starting this year to finance development projects, said in September that it would not give grants to any Polish town that declares itself "free of L.G.B.T."

If I were the mayor of a small Polish town, I would simply not declare it "free of L.G.B.T."
