First I'll start off by saying Taehyung and Jennie were 100% dating back in 2017-2019 and those pictures taken of them were definitely real.

And speaking of BTS members dating other idols, the biggest controversial dating rumour circulating BTS is if Jungkook and Chae Kyung are secretly dating because of the amount of references we've have made about each other and the candid pictures taken of us hanging out

Other than him, I do have like 5-6 dating rumours with other idols too but "KyuKook" or "Rookie" is the most popular ship surrounding me in my reality.

No one actually understands how much I love this topic because in this reality, I am not big on parties but I wish I liked them so ive scripted in my kpop dr that I enjoy parties (I also scripted I'm a bit of a lightweight just to be dramatic) and I have always wondered how idols got away with sneaking out to parties some of the time unnoticed.

Of course not always because of those candid pictures of idols walking together and dancing in a club but the idea of it is so exciting to me plus I don't really gaf if a fan sees me and I get hate for it lmao. I'm out here dancing and being shipped with YOUR "oppa", and YOU'RE🫵🏾 not!

Ask 2: BPP I don’t consider myself a New Jeans fan as their music hasn’t grabbed my attention yet but you sparked my interest in them so I’ve been keeping my eye out as an outsider. Holy shit their numbers are amazing considering this is their 1st comeback?? They will definitely be dominating SK this year as the Korean GP seems to like them and are paying attention to what they’re putting out. Hype Boy did amazing in the US too even though it was hardly promoted over there. Maybe this is a little too early to predict but I feel like in a year or too they will start dominating the GG scene and maybe even give BP competition internationally if their still active by then???

Ask 3: Seeing Hybe’s trajectory is crazy. From a struggling company barely able to support their artist to now having not just the biggest band in the world BTS but also New Jeans who has been a sprinting since debut, getting the 2nd fastest song to debut in Melon 100 after BTS. I’m not a fan of NJ but damn Hybe is killing the game. In just a few years they’ve established a pretty great roster of artists in Korea not even counting BTS’ global dominance and now they’re also slowly building up their artists base in Japan too. Hybe’s name carries a lot of clout now (ofc thanks in a large part to BTS) to be able to sign Techi and snatch famous former Prod48 artists. They hav stumbled a lot especially last year with LSF and trainee a but it still hasn’t changed the fact that they’re growing at a fast rate. No wonder kpop stans hate the company. I know armys joke a lot about how BH planned BTS’ career hundreds of years ago by the way that they plan albums and concepts months even years in advance but seeing the company slowly reveal their plans and acquisitions is surprising, I remember how shocked everyone was when they acquired Ithaca. It will be exciting to look back in a few years to see what they turn into and how they influence the industry.

Anon in Ask 1, aside from BTS members, the artists I'm most looking forward to in 2023, are NewJeans and Esperanza Spalding. Since NewJeans is likely more relevant for my readers in this space, I'll explain why I'm excited about more music from them this year, and I'll be using comments in all your asks as touchpoints.

"Now I see why you said NewJeans reminds you of rookie BTS."

They aren't directly comparable of course, but there are parallels. Three things made me notice BTS when they debuted in 2013:

Their music

The cohesiveness of their storyline/concept

The reaction of wider k-pop fandom/industry to the group

All three bulletpoints for BTS also hold true for me with NewJeans, and is the reason I've been into them since July 22, 2022, and why I'm excited for them in 2023. I'll work my way from bottom to top.

The Reaction of Wider K-pop Fandom / Industry to the Group

Some people think BTS weren't well known and loved in Korea until their breakout in 2016, but the reality is the reaction to BTS from nearly everyone was overwhelmingly positive. Comments from an old forum:

"They will definitely be dominating SK this year as the Korean GP seems to like them and are paying attention to what they’re putting out. "

BTS were the definition of monster rookies, they won the rookie awards etc, and most everyone (peers, gp, and industry leaders), took notice of them and loved them. People talked about how they had a different sound, more engaging performances, and an interesting take on the school concept with songs that appealed to their age group and others. But if there's one thing to never forget about k-pop, it's how insanely hyper-competitive it is, and we all know what happened to BTS between 2013 and 2018 at the hands of k-pop stans who at BTS' debut had loved them. The stakes are higher for k-pop stans in 2023 than it was in 2013, so for anyone reading this who genuinely loves NewJeans, just be prepared. You've all already seen that NMIXX, IVE, Classy, Lapillus, etc all debuted in 2021/22 with members aged 13 - 15 under the management of a 'creepy/pedo' CEO (and ad infinitum for groups debuting in previous years), but no group has gotten more controversy for it than NewJeans, curiously only starting after their debut album pre-order numbers were released. K-pop stans are predictable because of the incentives that drive them, so for the girls' sake and your own peace of mind, try as much as possible to engage only positively in the fandom and with others.

Don't engage with the noise, which will only be amplified after YG debuts their new girl group this year. Just keep receipts. Believe me you'll have a lot of it before the year is over. And you'll need it.

The Cohesiveness and Execution of Their Storyline / Concept

(this section includes spoilers)

The biggest clue to whatever NewJeans is, is their icon: the white rabbit.

It's everywhere - in their MVs, in their outfits, in their lore and concepts, their fandom name, and in their sound which is notably both dreamy and bouncy/groovy. The way NewJeans expresses this motif in every single thing they do is easily one of the most brilliant things I've seen in k-pop. And this is partly because of how both subtle and obvious it is, and how they've taken an old tale and modernized it so it feels familiar but also self-aware.

What is this concept I'm talking about?

It's Alice in Wonderland.

Doing a full analysis of their discography so far would make this post too long and analysis isn't my forte anyway, but if NewJeans' summer release introduced fans to their sound, gifting bunnies a 'Cookie', then in their winter release NewJeans are inviting people to follow the white rabbit into their maddening, dreamlike universe. The wonderland of NewJeans is one of eternal youth and good vibes, and not necessarily Y2K as is widely believed. In my opinion.

Every group from debut Itzy to Red Velvet to XG to Triple S has tried a Y2K aesthetic and not one of them feel as nostalgic or youthful as NewJeans. Why?

From the straight unadorned long black hair, to the inclusion of Black and queer characters into central storylines about young love, to using the bunny as a metaphor for playfulness and awareness, the expression of youth and fantasy in NewJeans is so subtle and yet pervasive to me, it's obvious it has come from the mind of someone obsessed with the idea, someone who has studied what makes someone youthful beyond the temporal sense.

Much has been said at this point about the end scene in OMG and how that is Min Heejin clapping back at her detractors (lol, k-pop stans make me laugh on a daily basis y'all), but for anyone who has actually watched the MV, it's clear that everyone (including the doctors) is said to be mad or a little insane or inside this 'dream-like reality'. Everyone, including the viewer. In Ditto and OMG, NewJeans' not only break the 4th wall, they demolish it completely. You're left wondering what is real and what is an illusion. And that's the point. With that final scene in OMG with Minji bringing the hater with her into the insane asylum, and the final scene in Ditto where an Inception-like flip happens when Ban Heeseo watches her old tapes (Heeso being a representation of their fans), the creative team at Ador has brilliantly conveyed the reality of para-social relationships fans develop with their idols, as well as enclosing their fans in their own universe and memories. Not even their haters are exempt.

It's genius.

And the really exciting thing about NewJeans is they're only getting started.

I've said before that HYBE is best at storytelling, and nowhere is this more evident than in NewJeans and BTS.

Their Music

One way I like to describe NewJeans' sound is: a return to basics.

Like BTS, NewJeans' debut style in music and choreography is primarily influenced by old school (or 90s) hiphop. The primary difference between the two groups in terms of music is that NewJeans also incorporates the mirror sound (R&B) more than BTS did at debut (BTS leaned more into R&B in 2014 and 2018), and without unnecessary rap verses typical of k-pop girl groups. In other words, NewJeans is more Aaliyah (lol) than they are Janet Jackson, but the effect of listening to their music is the same.

For example, I heard OMG and immediately thought of Paradise by BTS, a song considered by a lot of ARMYs to be the tannies' best song (it's not lol, that title belongs to UGH, or HOME if you hate the sound of gunshots). OMG has a UK Garage type beat, and Paradise is the trap + lofi expression of the same idea. For the nerds like me, Paradise's producer recently did a breakdown of how he made that song and it's worth watching.

I don't think there's anybody who disagrees with you Anon. The company has had time to prepare for BTS' enlistment and it shows. What I've always enjoyed about how BigHit manages BTS and TXT, is how they seem to prioritize music production and go in the opposite direction of where their peers are heading in terms of music/styling/concepts, and even the few times there's directional overlap, it still feels 'different'. A lot of groups will be returning in 2023: the entire SM roster, Zico, Stray Kids, etc, and I'm curious to see how HYBE will differentiate themselves without BTS.

How long have you been writing? I am unsure if anyone asked this question before or not. Adding on, how do you write drabbles or oneshots? I can only write short drabbles — roughly 5 sentences. Apologies for asking too much, Kai.

in general i’ve been writing since maybe.. i was 10? maybe younger? writing silly little wolf oc stories in a notebook with pen that i’d show my grandparents because i was so proud 😭 then i went to quotev, then wattpad (my wattpad account still stands to this very day, i should check how many years it’s been standing) and then here but i wasn’t very consistent here! i came back officially like 2-3 years ago with two kpop writing blogs and then i returned to genshinblr to write last spring with https-alhaitham (it was https-furina by the time i moved this january we don’t mention the url changes) so um… i’ve been doing this a while HAHAHA

as for drabbles !!! i usually write drabbles when i have a really good fic idea but i’m not motivated or simply don’t have the time to make it a full fic - specifically my kaeya angst drabble i wanted to make a full fic but made it into a drabble instead. the easiest thing i can think is when you get your creative spark or idea, do short bulletpoints of the plot and where you’d like it to go. typically i do long lists for fics to follow my plots so maybe bulletpoint shorter but remember to keep it short when writing !! maybe a bulletpoint for a paragraph to give your mind an idea what it needs to cover. honestly this also applies to fics…

another advice i’d give is to not use symbols / fonts excessively!! i know they’re super pretty but imo it can get a little overwhelming / messy depending on how you use them ˊᯅˋ

•Do you like kpop band BigBang?

• Other than Loona & Shinee which other groups songs you listen the most?

•When I found onlyOneOf it's make me so happy.... It's rare to see a kpop group explicitly talk about and show gay love through their members. It's a risky thing for them to even try because they don't have the backing of a big company or a big fan base for them, but they're still very pure and raw in their art. I miss Love (Park Jisung) ... When I heard the news he no longer in the group makes me sad... I feel concerned that there has been nothing about him for over a year.

• what do you think about the aegyo thing ? I’m sorry I know it’s a part of K-pop but it is so frickin forced and unnatural on some idols. Even in vlive I got second hand embarrassment when comments filled up with asking a 30+ old to do aegyo.

I used to like Bigbang, I used to LOVE the GD & Top album when it came out, but the group is beyond irredeemable to me at this point. Even if I can pretend no one had even an inkling of what SEungri/YG were up to, the music isn't there and the fetishization of blackness is too much.

I don't even listen to Loona the most, I lsiten to Red Velvet, Sunmi/Wonder Girls, and I guess then Twice the most. If I do listen to ny 4th gen, it's like... solely for the music, I don't follow membres or watch music videos. Like I have some Billlie songs on my phone but couldn't tell you shit outside of Tsuki existing nad that's only because Tsuki hangs with Chuu sometimes. I think my friend is super into onlyoneof though... or into Oneus. I cannot tell the difference, I'm sorry. If you want more gay shit, Monsta X had a gay MV (All In), I know Sistar had one (One More Day), and then of course you should support HOlland who is like... an actual out gay man and isn't just gay for MV pay. I haven't listened to her stuff yet but Jiae is an out bisexual idol who just did her solo debut.

I don't love aegyo but I also recognize it's a. it's a cultural thing b. it's not any more of a performance than a lot of other idol stuff and c. it's... kinda funny when idols are open about hating it. Like Sunmi haaaates it and yet makes a big show of it. Like when she came to perform in NYC th efirst time, someone tried to make her wear the cliche bunny hat with the ears you can make wiggle and she pouted and was like "Do I HAVE to" and hten put it on and posed and acted ridiculous. It was fine. It's ridiculous that anyone even asked in the first place but watching her play off of it was fun.

Ive been a bit detached rfom Kpop In General in recent years. I feel like outside of Shinee, Chuu, and Sunmi I have no idea what's going on with members or like variety stuff. it’s been about 2 months now, after you pulled that whole project shenanigan on Hyunjin

he said he was going to get you back, but surprisingly nothing big really happened... at least yet

he did pulled small harmless teasing like hiding your chair before you came to class, so when you showed up, you looked like an idiot 

also choosing you as the next person to answer questions just so you’ll make a fool out of yourself, or bumping into you when he passes by on purpose, and etc but nothing really major

and for that, you would retaliate by trying to trip him when you get the chance to, hiding his stuff when he goes to use the restroom and etc

so before you knew it, you both kind of had this small competitive bond between you guys, always trying to one-up one another 

highkey you know y’all were being so childish and petty but you weren’t going to stop until he does so first

y’all weren’t particularly friends because you guys don’t really talk to each other and only interacted when you absolutely really have to during class session

so it was like this silent fight 

you’re hitting each other back and forth, but there’s no sound

you didn’t really expect anyone to take notice of your somehow developing relationship with Hyunjin, because it was basically just you guys acting petty towards each other

so that was why you were so surprised when your friend hit you with a question one day at lunch time

“Are you and Hyunjin like secretly dating?” She gave you a stern look as she held her fork in her hand, in the middle of the chewing

“wait what?” you stared at her in confusion

you almost spat out your food a second time

and with that, you both went your separate way when it was time for Math class

you sat down and took out your textbook, waiting for the lecture to start when you were suddenly greeted by Seungmin, one of Hyunjin’s friend

it felt weird because you had never personally spoken to him before, maybe except only in groups when y’all had to work out a problem together

but to be fair you never really spoke to any other members of Hyunjin’s squad or whatever

“Hey! Y/n right? I’m Seungmin.” He smiled and extended his arm to greet you

you were so lost

what the hell was happening

“Uh... yeah, I’m Y/n...” you were shaking his hand but you had no idea what was going on

“I’m sorry. I should’ve introduced myself earlier. I just thought since you’re the girlfriend of one of my friends now, I figure I should get to know you better.”

there was still 5 more minutes left until the class start

so you rushed out of the room and onto to find Hyunjin’s ugly ass

when you found the room, you peaked your head in and found Hyunjin stretching 

you snatched Hyunjin’s ear and dragged him out into the hallway

you slapped his shoulder 

“What the fuck?!” was all you could say

“Ouch,” he frowned as he cover the part you had hit

“Seriously? Your plan of revenge is to tell everyone we’re dating? I mean--w-what even--” you were at loss for words

“Oh, that.” Hyunjin’s face turned from plain to joy and he started cracking up

“So I see you’ve heard about it,” he continued

“No shit. You’re an even bigger idiot than I thought you were.” 

“Hey, I was cornered by the members. They all came up to me and started asking about you. So I just told them we were a thing to get them to stop bothering me. What else do you want me to say?” He said with the littlest care in the world. It didn’t irritate him a bit.

“UHM... whAt ElsE cAN YOU say? THAT WE’RE NOT DATING?!” 

“yeah, but what’s the fun in that.” 

you facepalmed so hard

“you’re an idiot, Hwang Hyunjin.”

“You get to be with the Hwang Hyunjin, yet you’re over here complaining your ass out.” 

“uh well yeah... one little problem, WE’RE NOT EVEN DATING! I literally just told my best friend I had nothing to do with you, and now if she hears about it, she’s going to think I’m a shit friend who lied in front of her face.” 

“Shhh... people will hear if you’re being too loud.” he threw his hand around your back and pulled you closer, while he put his other index finger up to his lip signaling you to shush

you tried pushing him away but people started to look

That was what he liked about you • A slow song played next and you both groaned, you had talked about that cliché moment at dances when the couple get up to dance and a slow song starts to play but you laughed together as you started to sway to the beat. • Your hands held his shoulders lightly, as your head rested on his chest, almost like a hug, while his hands slowly made their way to your waist, causing an acceleration in his heartbeat though you were too busy to notice as you hummed along to the song. • He closed his eyes, never wanting to forget this moment, the moment he realised he liked you, more than a friend, he took in your sweet voice, quietly singing along to the song when all of a sudden you snorted as you looked across the hall to find Johnny and Jaehyun dancing the same way you two were to make fun of the both of you, he couldn’t help but laugh too at the sight in front of them. • Jaehyun was leaning his head on Johnny’s shoulder as they were almost the same height, twirling around the hall as they listened to you laughing. • They were so happy for taeyong, they knew before he did that he would have feelings for you, the way his ears seemed to perk up when you talked in a conversation, you balanced him out, he had a cold exterior, his prominent features scared many into thinking he was a very cold person but after befriending him the boys knew differently. • Whereas you were bubbly  and had friendly features and they took a liking to you instantly, they first realised that taeyong liked you when they joined your group, the way he was overly protective as he was used to things just being you and him, it took him longer to accept the boys than you. • But now taeyong couldn’t imagine life without the three of you and couldn’t be more grateful for three friends he knew would be there for him for life and the trio felt the same way. • After prom taeyong would be so confused, noting things about you that he had never realised before, the way you lit up band practice when you walked into the garage, the way you threw your head back and you closed your eyes when you found something really funny and he couldn’t tell whether he actually had feelings for you or if it was just a crush. • So one day at lunch you’d be sitting at a table with Jaehyun and Taeyong and Johnny walks over with a poster in his hand and slam it on the table “guys you know we have to enter this right ?!” • You’d share a hesitant look with taeyong, although you didn’t deny the talent your band had, you had never participated in any competition therefore you wouldn’t know the kind of talent the other groups had • The competition meant business though, the winning group would receive a record deal and cash prize, the two things any aspiring musicians wished for • After some persuasion from Johnny you gave in, looking around the table you smiled, you wouldn’t want to take part in the competition with anyone else and it would be stupid to pass up an opportunity like this, jaehyun and Johnny high fived and cheered, sending all of the attention in the lunch room your way • The four of you knew that there was no chance you’d even qualify without a lot of practice. After countless nights spent in the garage you auditioned and qualified, making it to the final, although you had done well throughout the competition and received good feedback from the judges. You knew that winning the competition without doing something to make yourselves stand out wasn’t happening

• So you decided to come up with your own song, yes it was a risky move but with the lyrical geniuses that are jaehyun and taeyong and your knowledge of composing music mixed with Johnny’s editing skills you were pretty confident that you could create something great that would catch the eye of the judges and may give you the edge. • You all decided to stay at Taeyong’s house, giving you the opportunity to shoot ideas back and forth (while devouring a mountain of Doritos) and ask the guys for their opinion. Your eyelids slowly started to droop after five hours of nonstop composing and changing things around, you rested your head comfortably on Taeyong’s shoulder, slowly falling asleep. • It was a normal thing you would do but it felt different this time to Taeyong, his heart leapt at the sight of you laying on his shoulder, with your laptop balancing on your legs and shallow breaths leaving your mouth • He couldn’t leave even if he wanted to (he definitely didn’t) so he placed your laptop carefully onto the table and placed an arm around your waist, the guys had fallen asleep an hour before, tiring themselves out by eating so much pizza • He placed his lyric book on the ground and wrapped a blanket around you both and slowly fell asleep himself. • You were the first to wake up and you were surprised to say the least when you felt someone’s arm around you, you looked up at Taeyong to see him sleeping peacefully, a small blush forming on your face • Your feelings towards Taeyong had started to bloom recently, you just couldn’t imagine your life without him, always planning your futures together, he was your partner in crime and you were always curious if you would work out as a couple. • The next few band practices you had were all night-ers, trying to perfect the song, changing the tuning slightly as you did. Both Jaehyun and Johnny had begun to pick up on your feelings for Taeyong and began to put a plan into action, they’d leave you two alone at lunch time and say they had detention for doing something stupid and go sit in the library to give you two time to talk. They’d set the wrong time for band practice so they’d get there half an hour later than you did. • Basically doing anything to let you guys figure out your feelings for one another. • So anyways the day of the bandslam final comes and you were well prepared and you knew that even if you didn’t win you still tried your hardest and you still had your three best friends and nothing could change that. • Don’t get me wrong though, you were up against some pretty stiff competition, the level of talent was insane but you didn’t have much time to think about it since you were one of the first bands to play. • ¬¬the look of confusion which very quickly turned to excitement that came from the judges and the crowd was priceless as they realised you were playing your own song, though Taeyong looked more nervous than usual. • You let it slide because you thought it was just because of the competition but little did you know he was planning on asking you to be his girlfriend if you won • The performance was definitely one of the best you’ve had, you couldn’t help but feel emotional at knowing all of the hard work you put in had paid off and the reaction from the crowd was something that you never wanted to forget. • The competition was left down to three different groups, all of which had did very well with their performances, standing on the stage waiting for your results you felt like your heart was about to drop to your stomach. Taeyong took hold of your hand and interlocked it with his own, giving it a squeeze, you looked up to Taeyong who gave you a reassuring smile. • You were too busy in your own thoughts to realise your name had been called out as the winning group, everyone was screaming and you were pulled into a group hug by Johnny “wE DID IT GUYS, WE ACTUALLY DID IT” • Taeyong pulled away from you and grabbed a mic and got the attention of the crowd who were cheering you “so I promised myself I’d do something if we won this competition” he turned to face you taking your hand in his own “ will you go out with me?” • And god, you would be in tears now if you weren’t already crying, you’d nod your head and pull him in for a hug, shyly kissing his cheek. • To be honest the two noobs were probably freaking out more over the fact you said yes to being Taeyong’s girlfriend than winning the competition, they’d pick you both up and spin you round “IT’S ABOUT TIME WE THOUGHT IT WAS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN” • Honestly this was a day that would go down in history for all four of you, though you’d be the biggest winner of all because you got a record deal and walked away with Taeyong not just as your best friend, as your boyfriend.
