natsusa: annoying but loveable mc - he (nicely) manipulates everyone but they all love him so they don’t mind

seiichiro: childhood best friend in love with the mc - is quiet and loves them quietly too - would do anything for mc

ibuki: awkward but good at a lot of things friend - got some trauma but mc helped them

yasunari: really angry at mc - mc was their idol but something happened and they feel betrayed - once they talk it out they become best friends (not that yasunari admits it)

yuu: loveable child who looks up to and idolises mc

ethan: foreign pervert

ikuto: reliable senpai who knows everything - like a mother - very calming and good to talk to - will understand you and try to help - actually helps

gakuto: popular senpai - if ikuto was the mother gakuto would be the father - not very calming to talk to but will try to help - doesn’t always help much

Overview: The top-tier courtesan named “Kotori” is known far and wide in Yoshiwara as a woman made to be a muse, residing in the high class house “Ori-ya”. In her contrasting clothes of blue, Riku’s a kind but strong-willed young woman who’s drenched in the luxurious and gorgeous ‘world of suffering’, Yoshiwara is a small yet treasured world to her. 

Riku’s the daughter of a woman who was once famous Oiran in Yoshiwara ( ‘Murasaki’ ), the product of a man who promised to come back for them, but never did. When receiving an offer of marriage from yet another old client, Murasaki had no problem dumping the 5 year old at her old brothel ( Ori-ya ) for a large amount of money before marrying the man “childless”. Riku doesn’t know much of her mom other than her reputation—but due to looking nothing like her, no one would really believe she’s Murasaki’s daughter even if she claimed it. Not that she cares anymore, she’s just happy that she wasn’t sold to a seedy, low-ranked house.

Having caught the fancies of many even while she was but an apprentice, appealing to them with her seemingly open personality, it was pretty much assumed that she’d already have people lining up when she became a full-fledged Oiran.  She loves conversing, and most of all, she loves hair ornaments. It’s very common for clients to gift her with trinkets such as jewelry and hair accessories.While most clients and their companions become captivated by her girlish charms and strange way of being, her companions inside the house appreciate her for her kind, yet down-to-earth philosophies.

She (along with Una) have become immortalized by artists and writers, who describe her as the ‘blue sky in a world of luxurious red’ or, just like her given name; a little bird stuck in a cage. Indeed, in many ways she’s become somewhat unattainable in more than one way, and due to becoming a celebrity for all her hard work, has also become quite the busy young woman.

Her main appeal when it comes to the arts is, of course, her voice---her singing can captivate all. Though she weaves her words like a poet, she’s poor at calligraphy due to her weak wrist, and so never really writes much---and if she has to, she asks one of her friends to do so for her. She gives an excuse of “Writing letters make me feel listless and cause my sleeves to become wet with tears” to clients---which usually works. BC of her lack of writing tho, most of the songs she’s created/sung have either been passed down through ear/written through other’s, or lost when she died.

Note: Riku was raised in Yoshiwara---it’s genuinely all she remembers/knows, as she wasn’t allowed to step out of it’s gates. She lived in a house of beautifully dressed courtesans, they were her mother, her sisters who showed her the world. Perhaps if she knew the world outside (tho she does desire to see the outside world/travel) she would feel more unbearable shame about the life she was sold into---like many of the girls who came when they were older. Though she admits that she wishes she were given to a Geisha Okiya and has her own reservations about her position in life, she’s none the less proud of her accomplishments, and believes herself to be a bittersweet existence. Instead of wallowing in sorrow (tho sometimes she SHOULD), she shows pride in how much she’s grown and strives hard as a top ranked Oiran. She won’t rely on fantasies of running away or a man falling for her and paying her debts.

She believes that all women, even the harlots around her, are ‘good’ by default---just because your in such work, doesn’t mean you’re a bad person by association. Being an Oiran doesn’t mean your soul is dirtied, or you’re dirty in general, and she’s known to scold a couple of girls if they voice thoughts like that. She’s also an advocate of ‘make sure you do all you can to selfishly get your own pleasure’ bc clients are selfish and probably wouldn’t even realize anything.

Needless to say, though they’re kind of the same, “Kotori” and “Riku” are different, just like everyone else. Her days ‘off’ are usually spent wandering Yoshiwara and having as much fun as she can. Though even now, only the chosen few, such as her close friend Una and her own Kamuro, are allowed to call her Riku/Ricchan in private, or know her real name at all. It’s also to these select few that she constantly displays a livelier, more playful side---as well openly stating her opinions (like above) in attempts to save them from too much heartache, or to make things easier.

Goals: Have the Most Processions in Yoshiwara History || Maintain Her Status || Pay her debt || Pursue singing after paying debt.

Pertaining to Love: It’s alright, though it could lead to ruin. Love is a beautiful thing, but for women like them, it could easily blind and put you off course. Some may believe Riku’s surprisingly cynical toward love, but she’ll admit that she finds it lovely, though dangerous in Yosiwara, so she’s just super fucking cautious. She, in truth, doesn’t truly believe she’s fallen for anyone before (or so she says). She’s liked a man for their face and personality before (even lusting for some), but a “true” love is something she hadn’t experienced since the puppy dog crush when she was but a child (on a hairdresser, no less!). She doesn’t really believe that she could bring herself to fall in love, even if she wanted to, until she pays her debt. It would be a miracle if it happens.
