Doctor Aphra (2020) #31 ALL MADE ONE An uneasy truce between Aphra and the Spark brought the dual-inhabited body of the archaeologist to the Amaxine Station. There, Aphra came face-to-face with Darth Vader. After an intense battle, Aphra and the Spark were finally separated, with the good Doctor saying goodbye to the locked-away spirit of Miril. Now it's time for Doctor Chelli Aphra to get her life back on track…. Writer: Alyssa Wong Artist: Minkyu Jung Letterer: Joe Caramagna Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg Cover artist: Rachael Stott Editor: Mark Paniccia Publication date: May 3, 2023 We're finally beyond the Spark Eternal storyline, but much in the way that Jean Luc Picard never truly got over his assimilation by the Borg, so you have to believe it will be with Aphra as her similarly invasive coercion is simply too huge an event to just forget. We're with her at Mareti Base on Hiorin in the Outer Rim, and as Chelli checks the mark left behind by the Spark she walks back into a dimly lit room where Ariole Yu, Just Lucky, Magna Tolvan, Eustacia Okka, her father Korin Aphra, Detta Yao, Sana Starros and Kho Phon Farrus sit waiting. What they don't expect is Aphra to tear into them, telling them to go home, help the rebellion, whatever they want. Magna is annoyed, while Kho defends herself when accused by Aphra of risking everything to crack the secrets of the Ascendant. As Korin calms the tension somewhat, Aphra reminds them that she didn't ask them to risk their lives, to which Magna replies that no, she didn't - Sana Starros did. Frustrated, Tolvan walks away and Sana tells Chelli to go after her and apologise, and following close behind we learn that Sana orchestrated the situation so she was there with Tolvan, the two people Aphra loves the most. Magna and Chelli speak, Aphra as cutting as ever as she refuses to aplogise for their night together back in issue #39 of the orignal run of Doctor Aphra, claiming she did it to protect Manga and keep Vader away. Chelli knows Magna is leaving and wants their last memory to not be one of them fighting, but Tolvan makes it clear that the rebellion will always be her priority just as Aphra will always choose herself. [gallery link="file" size="large" columns="2" ids="143933,137924"] Back with the group, Korrin and Eustacia discuss the Shadow University while Detta and Kho tussle before kissing, the pre-emptor to the door locking as Just Lucky and Ariole walk by and have their own moment, Lucky propositioning Ariole as they too kiss. We cut to Sana and Aphra, and after explaining a thousand reasons why she should run for the hills, Sana tells Aphra she loves her and they also kiss. However, Sana then explains why she has to go, how she'd go through it all again but doesn't believe Aphra would do the same, or even tell Starros that she loves her in return, which Aphra can't do. We leave a broken Aphra as we shift location to Numidian Prime a while later and Luke Skywalker walking back to his X-Wing where R2-D2 waits. However, the droid is on his side and as Luke checks closer a cannister opens and smoke plumes out, knocking Luke unconscious as Aphra steps in looking for 'a little adventure'. This is certainly a reset, and while very little happens in the issue there's certainly plenty to ponder. Magna Tolvan has left, Detta and Kho are a couple, as are Just Lucky and Ariole. Even Korrin and Eustacia are planning to work together, but it's the love life of Aphra that drives this issue and leaving her bereft after Sana leaves (quite possibly for the events of her currently ongoing mini series) she appears to be turning her attentions back to her stock-in-trade and luring Luke into helping her achieve it. There needed to be a tonal break between the Spark Eternal storyline and whatever comes next, and again the consistent thread was everyone highlighting what a thoroughly lousy person they believe Aphra is. Of course, as a reader we can see things in Chelli
her companions cannot (especially her lack of worth, something she often states but her group clearly don't believe she means), but the trick of Alyssa Wongs writing is to in turn take us to ground level to show us how she is seen by everyone around her. On that basis, she really is a contradictory, hypocritical, complusive, manipulative 'horrible little womp rat of a person' - the trick to keeping us coming back is her friends are every bit as morally bankrupt as she is. Fascinating stuff, and with the Skywalker ending we're all geared up for the next adventure in issue 32. [amazon box="B0BWSNB7DQ"]

This week’s theme: ways to say “I love you.”
After a lifetime of fighting, Dr. Chelli Aphra and her father, Korin, find themselves stuck together in spooky, green-lit danger. Though Aphra does not hold back on her usual sarcasm -- especially since this whole thing was his stupid idea -- this part marks a turning point in their relationship. As much as they disagree, when the situation gets scary enough we see they still care about each other.
“Doctor Aphra,” issue 5. Marvel. March 8, 2017. Writer: Kieron Gillen. Penciller: Kev Walker. Inker: Marc Deering. Letterer: Joe Caramagna. Colorist: Antonio Fabela.

What I love about the main crew in Doctor Aphra (2020) is that there's literally not a single straight person.
Chelli Aphra is a famous disaster lesbian
She was romantically involved with Magna Tolvan, Sana Starros and Eustacia Okka at some point
Just Lucky and Ariole Yu are gay lovers and they're gonna have a summer wedding
Detta Yao fell in love with a nonbinary goth seiral killer
Kho Phon Farrus is the aforementioned nonbinary goth serial killer
There's no evidence that Korin Aphra is queer, but I'll make an exception because he looks very polite.
This squad is pure embodiment of "Be gay do crimes".
Look, I'm aware that Star Wars isn't exactly a goldmine when it comes to minority representation, but one thing that I LOVE is the contrast between SW movies/shows and the new canon expanded universe (books, comics etc).
While the movies are like "best I can do is one blink-and-miss WLW kiss", a lot of the expanded universe authors seem to have accepted a challenge "how queer can I make my story before Disney stops me". Thanks to them, we have hidden gems like Chelli Lona Aphra, Sinjir Rath Velus, Leox Gyasi, Rae Sloane, Sylvestri Yarrow and more. They just casually throw "her wife" or "his husband" without a fuss.
It's still far from enough, but it's refreshing nevertheless to see bunch of authors determined to sneak some LGBT+ representation into a fandom dominated by anti-sjw nerds, neckbeards and dudebros and owned by Disney.

So the new script version of the Aphra audiodrama includes a list of the cast introduced in Aphra’s voice. I just have to share.
DRAMATIS PERSONAE
DOCTOR CHELLI LONA APHRA: Rogue archaeologist. Weapons and droid expert extraordinaire. Our intrepid heroine.
DARTH VADER: Infamous Sith Lord. Man of few words. Our intrepid heroine’s terrifying boss.
TRIPLE-ZERO: Protocol droid. Favorite hobbies include translation, holo-chess, and draining organics of all their blood.
BEETEE: Blastomech droid. Has a flamethrower.
SANA STARROS: Smuggler. Unfortunate dreamboat. Working with the rebels for some godsforsaken reason.
BLACK KRRSANTAN: Disgraced Wookiee. Fearsome bounty hunter. Do not challenge him to a pit fight.
PADMÉ AMIDALA: The “good” former queen and senator of Naboo.
PRINCESS LEIA ORGANA: Rebel royalty. Has a mean left hook.
LUKE SKYWALKER: Yellow-haired rebel humanoid who is supposedly important for some reason?
HAN SOLO: Reformed scoundrel. Always claims to save the day. Actually useless.
CHEWBACCA: Han Solo’s very loud Wookiee sidekick. No match for Black Krrsantan.
C-3PO: Simpering Triple-Zero doppelgänger.
R2-D2: Foolhardy Beetee doppelgänger.
EMPEROR PALPATINE: Our intrepid heroine’s boss’s boss.
BOBA FETT: Bounty hunter. Inspires fear in the hearts of all ( except for our intrepid heroine ).
MAZ KANATA: Badass pirate queen. Incredibly sore loser.
KORIN APHRA: Our intrepid heroine’s father. Obsessed with excruciatingly boring Jedi stuff.
LONA APHRA: Our intrepid heroine’s mother. Obsessed with excruciatingly boring planets.
THE ANTE: Information broker. Sometimes useful. Not to be trusted.
IG-90: Bounty hunter. Overly pedantic assassin droid. Likes to shoot things.
BOSSK: Bounty hunter. Wookiee-killing machine. Does not understand the concept of jokes.
BEEBOX: Bounty hunter. Very short, but carries a big gun.
UTANI XANE: Curator of Quarantine World III. Loves bureaucracy and crushing dreams.
SAVA TOOB-NIX: Sava of the University of Bar’leth. Hates when his lectures are interrupted (especially by our intrepid heroine).
COMMODEX TAHN: Former mortician of Naboo. All-around bad liar.
ENEB RAY: Former rebel spy. Loves to monologue.
GEONOSIAN QUEEN: Really scary. No other descriptors necessary.

No really it’s all about the mommy and daddy issues with Aphra. Korin and Lona were maybe not the best people but they tried (and they failed). This was the first time that Chelli was forced away from someone close to her and it was entirely out of her control. So now whenever she does get close to someone else she forces them away before anything else can happen so that she can say that it was really her choice. She can lie to herself and convince herself that she’s in total control.

Imperial agent turned Rebellion leader Magna Tolvan finally had the elusive Doctor Aphra right where she wanted her…until Aphra tricked her rebel pursuers and escaped.
But Tolvan and Aphra have a messy history, and following an intense battle the two reignited their romance. After, Aphra used her electro- tattoos to learn the location of the Rebellion's new base…Hoth.
Now, Aphra's escaped again, but not before saving her father, Korin, and sending his shuttle to rendezvous with her sidekick, Vulaada, who's been on the run from vicious alien beasts. And Aphra's informed Vader that she's learned where the Rebels are hiding....

Bodyswap AU - Part 9 (links to parts: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)
Vader’s jaw went slack.
The old man stood agape, blinking at Aphra like she was growing another head, arms hanging at his sides.
Aphra waved at him.
“Hello? Sir?”
The man blinked again.
Aphra raised her middle finger.
“Sir, how many fingers am I holding up?”
The man kept staring, his face nearly turning green.
“Nope. Looks like you broke him.”
Vader’s face went red, heat rising to his ears.
“I?” he burst out. “I broke him? You could have told me he was your father before we landed at his doorstep!”
“I didn’t know you’d call him ‘sir’!”
“And what was I supposed to cell him?” he shouted. That was the most pathetic excuse he had ever heard, and he had experience in the department.
“Dad. That’s your dad. Come on, Doctor, you cannot possibly be that drunk.”
Vader shot her a death glare. How dare she?
“I. Am not. Drunk.”
Aphra elbowed him in the ribs.
“Of course you are.”
Vader held back a grunt. Bloody elbows.
“What on Malachor do you think you’re doing?”
“Improvising. Clearly, you’re in no condition to do the talking. Now if you would please…”
“What is going on?” the older man cut her off.
Aphra opened her arms in exasperation.
“Finally. We’re looking for the Fortress of Rur – or, well, anything pertaining to the Ordu Aspectu, really – and we thought someone might as well tag along and urgently join us on an urgent quest of the utmost urgency.”
The man knitted his brow.
“Chelli?” One blink. Two blinks. “Get out of the silly suit.”
“Yeaaah… I don’t think you want me to do that.”
“Chelli. Lona. Aphra. I am your father and I…”
“Will probably kill me if you take this thing off my face so the ‘silly suit’ stays on.” She paused, raising her index. “And what makes you think I am Chelli? That is awfully bold of you.” She turned towards Vader. “Isn’t that your first name, Doctor? My, my, what a family!”
Of course. Of course she had to say that. Well, for lack of academic credentials in archaeology, Aphra certainly had mastered the art of digging herself deeper.
“You think I wouldn’t know my daughter if she hid behind a mask? You could turn into a wookie and you’d still be my little Boop.”
Vader’s eyes went back and forth between the two.
“Boop?” he asked in a whisper.
“Don’t ask.”
“Besides,” the scholar continued, “few people are actually aware that the Ordu Aspectu…”
“Is your prime subject of interest?” she interrupted. “Oh, I’m pretty sure that’s the first thing you told every non-mummified sentient being you met in the past three decades.”
“I was going to say ‘had such a strong focus on out-of-body preservation of a being’s essence’ since it appears to be so relevant to your… case… And I do remember telling you about that.”
“Yes, well, you told me a lot of crazy stories. Doesn’t mean I remember them all.”
“All the same. Does that mean you’re going to help me?”
“Hm, let me see. No, Dad, I came all the way here to show you my brand new leather suit. I’m sure you must be scandalized. Yes, Dad, of course I’ll help you.”
A grin cracked the man’s face.
“I knew you’d come around some day.”
“Yes, yes, nothing like a good old out-of-body experience to reconnect with your loved ones.”
Before they knew it, Vader and the Doctor found themselves squeezed tight in the professor’s arms, staring at each other in awkward silence. A few seconds went on before Vader finally spoke.
“If he talks, he’s dead.”
The professor recoiled, casting his daughter a pleading look.
“Fine,” she said.
“WHAT?! The man all but choked. “Chelli… your own father…”
She shrugged.
“I try not to think about it.” There was a moment of silence. “But, if that’s any comfort: if you talk we’re all dead, Dad. All three of us. Or, well, you and me for sure, and Vader… probably. So don’t talk. Don’t talk and we’ll be fine. Oh, and no papers either.”
“But… what value is the quest for the Ordu Aspectu if its teachings remain secret? Shouldn’t we strive to make the Force for all a reality?”
Vader scoffed. ‘The Force for all’. Sweet buttery huttling. And there he thought Obi Wan had been delusional…
Aphra laid a hand on the man’s shoulder.
“Not now. Maybe after the war’s over. If we live to see it end…. And if you still believe it’s worth it.”
“I… I don’t…”
His eyes had become wet, Vader noticed, and his breath was starting to catch.
He closed his eyes and sighed.
“All right, Chelli. I won’t.”
Aphra gave him a brief hug.
“It’ll be fine. Now go pack you things, because you’re getting out of this hole.”
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Her nose wrinkled as the smell of burnt metal rushed into her air vents, and her eyes quickly settled on the blaster tracks that now adorned the bulkheads.
“Who the hell is burning holes in my ship?” she eructed, waiting for the culprit to come forth.
“It already had a few.”
Aphra pivoted on her heels, wagging her index at Vader.
“This is slander.”
A sharp beep came from the bedroom, and Triple-Zero appeared at the door.
“Well, we had to defend ourselves, Mistress!”
“No, no, no,” Ahsoka protested, coming out from behind him. “You stole my lightsaber.”
They did what now?
“You were not putting it to good use. Such a simple weapon, and yet the possibilities are a delight to my circuits…”
Oh. Of course.
“All right, Trip. Give it back.”
“But…”
“Give. It. Back.”
An outraged beep followed.
“Quite right, Beetee. Quite right. Ah… there you go, Jedi.”
If her father had only paid limited attention to the conversation, his excitement went through the roof at the mere sound of the word.
“You’re friends with a Jedi?!”
“That’s one way to put it, yes.”
She led him into the room.
“Dad, meet Ahsoka. Ahsoka, this is Dad.”
“Dad, as in… Dad? That’s your dad?”
“Why does everyone act so shocked? I was conceived in the most conventional way, by means of…”
“Okay, okay, I get the picture. Nice to meet you, Mister…”
“Aphra. Professor Korin Aphra.”
“Well, Professor, where do you suggest we begin?”
“Yavin 4. Several manuscripts suggest the Ordu interacted with the Massassi shortly before its decline, and there is one temple in particular that I’ve been meaning to explore. See, I may have part of the map,” he said, gesturing to a bag full of crystals, “but without the proper tool to decode it, I am in the dark. Now, all we have to do is figure out how to position these crystals, and pray the Great Massassi Temple delivers.”
“The former Rebel base is a restricted area,” Vader warned. “Consider yourself fortunate that I am at your side.”
“The Rebels set base on Yavin 4?”
“Oh, for kriff’s sake, Dad. The battle of Yavin 4? You know, when they blew up the Death Star? And did you also miss the memo about Alderaan?”
Her father titlted his head.
“The Death Star was real?”
This time, Aphra could swear the collar was the only thing keeping her lower jaw from falling off.
“I… You need to get the holonet.”
“Oh, Chelli, you know what I think of that rubbish.”
“Yes, well, there’s a rubbish screen in the kitchen, and you have some catching up to do.”
“But…”
“Do it. I’ll be in the cockpit. And stay seated during takeoff.”
Vader and Aphra took their seats, both a little stunned by the sheer absurdity of the day.
“You’ll need to request clearance before landing near the temple.” Vader switched on his datapad, quickly going through his files. “It appears the garrison is currently supervised by Captain Magna Tolvan, former head of security on Eadu. Commonly referred to as ‘quite the piece of work’.”
He handed her the datapad, displaying Tolvan’s file.
“Oooh, in that case… wouldn’t mind working the both of you.”
“You… WHAT?”
“You know what.”
“Take off.”
“Fine, fine, sorry. Although in all honesty…”
“Take. Off. Now.”
Aphra ignited the engines, putting full throttle on the repulsorlifts.
“Did I mention that my dad has hyperspace sickness?”
“Lovely.”
