Have you played KORIKO A Magical Year?
By Jack Harrison
Tumblr media
Solo journaling RPG about a young witch traveling in a new city called Koriko. Using tarot cards, you answer prompts and make decisions about your witch's year in Koriko, occasionally writing home about the people you meet and help. Inspired by Kiki's Delivery Service and Persona 5.

I started to play Koriko - a single person TTRPG where you’re a witch leaving town to try and start their own practice ala Kiki’s Delivery Service.
So here’s my character! Ril is a year older than they should be for this, but their initially attempt ended in catastrophe. They’re determined to do it right this time. Their familiar is a Coopers Hawk named Pike and their mentor is reclusive man named Fennec.

Do you want to play dnd but your friends are all too busy?
Try journaling games! I feel like I've never seen anybody else really talk about these online, but they're really fun. They like a solo rpg based on narrative and story. The rulebook has a bunch of prompts and random ways of selecting prompts/creating scenarios that you create a story with.
Theres a whole bunch of different games out there, some simple some complex, and so many different genres. I've just finished playing a game of Thousand Year Old Vampire, playing a gay scottish vampire from the 1500s who accidentally killed her crush/lover shortly after becoming a vampire, eventually becoming known as the corpse feeder for feeding on battlefields.
Now I'm playing Koriko, where I'm a 16 year old witch who is doing a Kiki's Delivery Service style year in a new town, and you play with tarot cards and by stacking d6 towers. Whats not to love

I fucking love this game
I just sat sobbing writing a letter to a man that does not exists, about my newfound friends and family that are not real who I've invented over the course of ten hours. these are all my blorbos and my little story is over, it feels like there should be another step a final scene, but this letter has sealed it all. Really though stumbling onto a tumble home and working over the course of a year with magic and good friends to help, was the real final scene. Serving them a meal from a ramshackle kitchen my character could call their own and fuck i jsut stoppe crying damnit i gotta stop writing because i can't see what 'm wring

Koriko, a magical year
So I have started this Solo TTRPG that is based on Kiki´s Delivery Service. As the description says, "This is a game for one player, designed for contemplative solo play."
This fantastic idea is the brainchild of @mouseholepress.
I am going to publish my progress here, maybe you get attached to my little witch´s story, or it inspires you to give it a go! I am not a good writer and English is not even my first language. As a busy adult with a job and no friends that are into roleplaying the concept of Solo TTRPG became extremely appealing to me. I used to roleplay and those adventures were part of some of the best times of my life. Roleplaying is good therapy, I swear.
I am glad to share my story with you and I am intrigued to find out what Neyra´s adventures will be like.

Episode 5 - Koriko
In which I get a name
Emi,
We finally made it! But it was awful. The forests and meadows, the hills and the mountains, they all started to give way to scrub land. And heat. So much heat. I could see the haze coming off the ground. And in the distance bordering desert dunes was my destination. The jeweled city of Koriko. It looked quiet as it sparkled in the sun. I really should have questioned that.
Almost no one was outside. There were some vehicles, but not many. Almost as if the city were abandoned.
I wanted to arrive in style. So I stopped and changed into my best formal work wear. That was a mistake for two reasons.
The first part was that I didn’t have privacy of woods to change. I judged that I was far enough from the city that no one would notice. I was wrong. The second mistake was that my outfit was designed to protect from cold. Not heat.
I hopped on my broom and collapsed from heat stroke before I made it to the city proper. It is both fortunate and embarrassing that someone was watching my approach. The boy that saved me gave me a horrid nickname that will lead to an embarrassing story every time I need to explain it. The hospital staff only knows me by the nickname, since I wasn’t conscious when he brought me in.
So, Emi, now Koriko knows me as the Ice Cream Witch. Because of my creamy white skin and the fact that I melt in the sun. I am mortified.

The problem (I am discovering) with Koriko, is that I really want to just write a novel for every prompt and that's... not a good idea.

Had a go at Solo DnD game, which I completed over two days. I've been looking for alternative games to DnD for a few weeks, and through that I found out about Solo games. And after two weeks of cancelled games, I thought I'd give solo play a shot, for occasions where I just really wanna play.
First I decided it'd be fun to randomly roll the characters I'd be playing too, so here they are:
Marble Axewell- Hill Dwarf Paladin, Folk Hero.
Marble comes from a small farming village where she served as a guard for the mayor. Unfortunately said mayor was kind of a dick who mistreated his employees and made pretty much everyone miserable. One day, she decided she’d secretly gather up some other people who were fed up and taught them how to fight, then they basically stormed the mayor’s house in a mob and ran him out of town, hence the folk hero background.
She’s heard the dude is hiding behind his buddies and red tape out in the capital and wants to track him down and ensure that he doesn’t abuse anyone else.
Astra Moonglow-Aasimar Divine Soul Sorcerer, Noble.
Astra is the youngest child of an ancient noble family, mostly composed of Elves, though there seems to be celestial material flowing through the bloodline. He wishes to attend a high-end magic school in order to learn howe to use and grow his magical powers.
Razer Drakeskull-Black Dragonborn Bard, Entertainer.
Razer is a travelling performer, who’s planning on meeting up with her old band again and going on an “out of hiatus” tour. Her guitar is a prized possession that was created by one of her bandmates (and best friend). During the past she’s probably pissed someone off who would prove to be significant later on in the group’s adventures.
I used The Solo Adventurer's Toolkit to run a sort of "test" session with these guys, using the method in it where you basically generate the quest first and used a word table to flesh out the details. For this game, there was a cult that was hunting after Astra, since they needed his celestial blood for a demonic ritual. That kinda stuff.
Yeah, solo DnD is definitely a very different experience from regular multiplayer DnD. Mostly a lot quieter, and I can take my time on it, taking breaks and picking it back up as I want. The plot was pretty simple but gave me something cool to work with and the random tables add interesting twists and challenges.
If I decide to do a longer solo campaign, I might use these guys again? (Or I might use the Ryan and the Quest Crew world and characters idk.)

Koriko a Magical year playtest
I love text based roleplaying and to be able to do it without the most crucial component (other humans) has been a huge leap. Scrawling things in my character’s journals about their experiences and experimenting with how to write in a way i’ve never written before has been super fun. It’s cool you should check it out.
