The thing that gets me about The Rescue, the thing I am absolutely obsessed with, is that in 1965 Doctor Who was already self aware enough to do the twist that the monster that looks like a man in a naff alien costume, is actually just man in a mask and gloves. Nineteen flipping sixtyfive!

I hope whoever designed the Koquillion was okay because this costume is nightmare fuel.

Season 2
The Rescue
The TARDIS lands on the planet Dido, and the crew come across a crashed ship from Earth with only two survivors: Vicki, and the crippled Bennett. Will the rescue ship get to them safely in time, or will they fall to the sinister native Koquillion?
This is a harmless enough story. Easily digestible at 2 episodes, but I wonder how it could have gone if it had maybe been stretched into 3. Give us more time to learn about Sandy, a proto-Drashig-ish creature who doesn't get much to do except growl at Ian and the Doctor from the bottom of a chasm, and then get shot by Barbara in an understandable case of misunderstanding (try saying that when you're drunk. I can probably barely say it when I'm sober). Hell, dive into more of the Doctor's history with Dido. That said, they're often talking about places they've visited throughout the show but we've never seen. His reminiscing is a nice little touch.
Ultimately, this story is really a vehicle to introduce Vicki as a companion, recently orphaned, and so far pretty much Susan 2.0, minus the intelligence that led Ian and Barbara to follow her home. I wonder if maybe they should have had another story between this one and The Dalek Invasion of Earth to go further into the Doctor's turmoil. He's clearly pining for Susan in his own way and is a little absent-minded. Because it's such a quick story, it's not hard to immediately work out the twist coming regarding Koquillion either. Incidentally, watching him, I thought "he sounds a lot like Skeletor," then when the credits rolled I realised it was Ray Barrett playing him, and it clicked. He was essentially redoing the voice he developed for Titan as Stingray went on. Less imperial, more just short of cackling. But I digress: Not sold on Vicki just yet, but we shall see how she develops as we go on. A harmless, enjoyable story for me, not going to set the world on fire, but good enough for what it is.
Next time: The Romans.

Rewatching Classic Doctor Who, some episodes I haven't seen in years, some of the animated reconstructions I haven't seen at all.
The Rescue AKA Serial L
The second production block of episodes starts with a tight little two-parter. We get a new companion, the first that we've seen that The Doctor takes on by choice (presumably Susan came by choice as well, but we never actually see that). The TARDIS gets it's distinctive 'VWORP' sound effect for the first time. Barbara gets yeeted off a cliff and then does a pet murder. Ian pronounces the villain's name as "Cocky lickin'" for some reason. It's a very full serial.
The episode starts with a long pan over some decent modelwork of a crashed spaceship. We get an introduction to Vicki: clever and excitable. She claims the rescue ship has landed but her bedridden companion Bennett claims that can't possibly be true. So what is it? The TARDIS has landed in a cave system nearby with the Doctor asleep at the wheel. In the process of preparing to disembark, The Doctor rather sweetly calls out for Susan before remembering she's left. I do like callbacks to old companions. Ian and Barbara explore while the Doctor takes a rock sample back to the TARDIS. They think he may be a bit depressed following Susan's departure. The Doctor's analysis of the rock sample, indicates they have arrived on the planet Dido, somewhere he's been before. Ian and Barbara come to a cliff from which they can see the crashed rocket but are interrupted by a strange creature who interrogates them. He sends Ian back for the Doctor, then pushes Barbara off a cliff. He then causes a cave-in to trap Ian and the Doctor.
Barbara survives, of course, and is hidden by Vicki. Vicki explains that the ship crash landed the crew were betrayed by the people of the planet and only Vicki and Bennett remain, held captive by a man named Koquillion. Ian and the Doctor move through the cave system, setting off some booby traps while they're at it. Back at the ship, Vicki tells Bennett that Barbara survived and he promptly faints. Vicki steps out, just in time to be menaced by a creature. So anyway, Barbara starts blasting and in a dangerously American moment kills Vicki's pet Sandy. Ian and the Doctor arrive. Vicki is understandably upset, but everyone sides with Barbara anyway. She's clearly the most dangerous member of the team.
The Doctor searched Bennett's room finding it empty.. and also finding a secret trap door. Ian and Barbara explain to Vicki that they are time travelers from 1963. Much to Barbara's chagrin, Vicki points out that this means they are over 500 years old. The trap door leads to a temple, full of ceremonial robes and gear... Koquillion appears to confront the Doctor who tells him that is blasphemy to wear the holy garb and he should remove it. Koquillion does so... revealing Bennett. Bennett murdered the crew of the ship and the people of Dido (apparently there's only one settlement on this planet? That's not important right now.) to cover up a murder he did before the crash. It's a nice little twist. Bennett attacks the Doctor, strangling him but two people of Dido appear (apparently, they were not all killed) and frighten Bennett until he falls off a cliff to his death.
The Doctor awakens on the TARDIS with Ian and Barbara. The Doctor goes to Vicki and asks her to come along. Ian and Barbara agree she should but it is up to Vicki who decides to come along. The TARDIS dematerializes...
...leaving the two people of Dido to smash up the radio system in the crashed rocket, making sure that rescue ship will never arrive.
The TARDIS rematerializes... and promptly falls off a cliff, a literal cliffhanger. And a good one. Welcome to the team, Vicki.
Two very fast paced episodes with a nice twist that probably couldn't have been sustained over more than two episodes. Koquillion's costume looks good, the model work is good. It's a nice little story, even if two random people of Dido turning up at the end to resolve everything is a bit anti-climactic. It is a sort of karmic justice, so it works. Barely. Honestly, if they hadn't smashed the radio at the end, it could have been up to the audience whether they were real or figments of Bennett's imagination or ghosts or something and the additional ambiguity would have made for a stronger ending. Audiences at the time enjoyed the story too, the second part of The Rescue was the first episode of Doctor Who to crack the top 10 most watched program(me)s of the week, increasing ratings from The Dalek Invasion of Earth
Next Up: The Romans. Now we're playing with fire.

Doctor Who Reviews: The Rescue
The Rescue follows on from the previous serial and the Doctor is clearly still distraught at the departure of Susan. When the TARDIS ends up on the planet Dido, the crew find a young girl from the 25th century by the name of Vicki, who along with her older companion, Bennet, are the lone survivors of a crashed starship, haunted by the space monster Koquillion.
It turns out that Bennet is Koquillion, and has been terrorising both Vicki and the local alien population for years, to keep her dependent on him. It's uh....it's pretty messed up and Vicki's actress, Maureen O'Brien really sells it. Bennet gets dealt with Disney Villain style, and the Doctor, clearly missing his granddaughter, chooses to invite Vicki to travel aboard the TARDIS with them, the first time we've seen him willingly open his ship to someone. This marks a shift in the Doctor's attitude to his companions, starting to view them as friends/surrogate children or grandchildren, rather then slightly bothersome travelling companions brought together by circumstance.
This is a short 2 part serial, and it's pretty good! Atmospheric, introduces a new companion and gives everyone enough screentime. The villain is decent, if not groundbreaking, and all in all, I had a good time watching it.
Rating: Sylvester McCoy out of David Tennant

The Rescue
02 - 09 January 1965
On the planet Dido, the Doctor, Ian, and Barbara encounter Vicki and Bennett, two survivors of a space crash who are awaiting a rescue ship. They live in fear of Koquillion, a bipedal inhabitant who is stalking the area. The Doctor enters Bennett's room, and follows a trap door to a temple where he unmasks Koquillion as Bennett. Bennett reveals he killed a crewmember on board the ship and was arrested, but the ship crashed before the crime could be radioed to Earth. He has been using the Koquillion alias so that Vicki would back up his story, and had hoped the planet would be destroyed when his version of events was given. Just as Bennett is about to kill the Doctor, two surviving native Didonians arrive and force Bennett to his death over a ledge. With no living family and nothing left for her on Dido, Vicki is welcomed aboard the TARDIS.
The Romans
16 January – 6 February 1965
The First Doctor (William Hartnell) and his new companion Vicki (Maureen O'Brien) investigate intrigue surrounding the death of a lyre player en route to perform at the palace of Nero (Derek Francis) in Rome, while companion Ian Chesterton (William Russell) travels to Nero's palace to save his fellow schoolteacher Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill), who had been sold to Nero's wife Poppaea (Kay Patrick) as a slave.

The Rescue
season 002 : story 011 : episodes 052-53
02 - O9 JAN 1965 || 15 MAR 2023
The second two-parter of the show, and just like The Edge of Destruction, is one that my opinion changes drastically whenever I watch it. The story overall is quite slow and… empty… but I like Vicki so I’m just glad to see her full stop, and Koquillion is a bit more creepy than I remember. Like him scaring Barbara off a cliff is kinda goofy, but him being ambushed by his ex-crewmates he thought he’d killed is great. Also by the way, Koquillion is actually Bennett from VIcki’s crashed UK-201 ship, and he killed a bunch of his crewmates and the native Didoans in an attempt to escape justice for murder. Yeah this story gets pretty dark, and the confrontation between the Doctor and Bennett conveys that well (right in time for his surviving crewmates to make their presence known).
Also really dark, is when Barbara ices VIcki’s pet Sandy.
Honestly there’s really not much to talk about here; I love seeing Vicki and the Koquillion & Doctor dynamic is good, but it’s quite barebones even for a two-parter, and as has been pointed out, it’s effectively a murder-mystery with one suspect.
★★★☆☆

[ID: Six gifs of Classic Doctor Who. Vicki Pallister is nervously pacing about her little room while Barbara Wright is sitting at a table, watching her. Vicki says to herself: "I wonder if Koquillion's gone?" Barbara asks: "What are the other people like?" She answers: "Mmm? Oh, he's the only one we see. They live quite near here, I believe." She walks over to a cabinet and pulls out a flare, excitedly showing it to Barbara, telling her: "This fires a flare." Barbara asks: "Is that for the rescue ship?" Vicki says: "Yes, I always keep it ready. There's room to land round here, you know." Barbara says: "It'll all be ending for you soon then." Vicki hesitantly says: "Um...yes." Barbara responds: "Well, you don't sound very sure." Vicki says, afraid: "There's always Koquillion. He could stop us. He could keep me here forever." End ID]
“Oh, he’s the only one we see.”

The parallels of Vicki and Steven both surviving being on a random planets. And in this particular episode Vicki takes an extra moment to be upset about her situation with the TARDIS being awash at sea while Steven jumps to next steps and survival- which almost perfectly mirrors how they handled their initial crashes (Vicki just staying with Koquillion/Bennett & Steven adapting to survive the Mechanoids)
I'm sure there's more parallels but this is my mini rant
