KONG - SKULL ISLAND (2017) Figure emblématique de la pop-culture, King Kong est culte, tout comme son homologue reptilien Godzilla: en 2005, Peter Jackson avait livré sa version “remake” de son film d’enfance préféré, magnifiant le titanesque gorille avec émotion. Douze ans plus tard, le roi de Skull Island revient pour un reboot total: derrière la caméra, on retrouve Jordan Vogt-Roberts, dont c’est le premier film. Avec un cast plutôt classe (Tom Hiddleston, Samuel Lee Jackson et John Goodman qui sont à fond dedans), le long-métrage nous fait rapidement comprendre son orientation assumée, les humains n’étant qu’un prétexte pour dévoiler un incroyable bestiaire inédit et varié, bagarres de créatures géantes à l’appui. Exit les personnages profonds, ici c’est Skull Island mon gars. Agressif et violent, l’accueil sur l’île mystérieuse n’aura jamais été si sauvage et impitoyable: très axé sur son contexte historique post-guerre du Vietnam via une avalanche de détails, Jordan Vogt-Roberts nous offre ce qu’on attend, à savoir un vrai film de monstres -et d’exploration-, contrairement à l’arnaque GODZILLA (2014) signée Gareth Edwards. KONG - SKULL ISLAND est aussi, ne l’oublions pas, une production calquée sur la” méthode Marvel”, dans le sens où elle est la première pièce d’un univers étendu, comme en attestera la séquence de fin “post-générique de la hype”. Blockbuster stylé, KONG - SKULL ISLAND a le mérite de ne pas recopier l’excellent -mais mal reçu- PACIFIC RIM (2013) de Guillermo Del Toro, mais aussi de respecter les codes relatifs à son patrimoine: brutal, viscéral, énorme, le retour de la bête est fracassant. Mention spéciale à ILM pour ses effets spéciaux qui desservent ce grand spectacle avec brio. BESTIAL /20
