A little late but was tagged by @klutenpetter to do a thing! It supposed to be 9 each of like games, TV, movies, etc that you enjoyed for the first time in 2023, but like him I'm just gonna do nine piece of media overall. I'll do my layout of pictures, showcasing each one via the character(s) that were my favorite from each piece of media, and in the order in which I saw them (approximately).

Buddy Daddies, Jan 2023. Super cute original anime. Really enjoyed the QPR thing the MCs had going on. You don't get a lot of found family media like that.

Golden Kamuy, March 2023. I was sick with the flu and binge read the entire series in like a week. LOVED IN. Filled with beefy studs and its a fun ride from start to end!

Psycho Pass, May 2023. I got into cyberpunk recently and gave this a whirl. Really enjoyed the first season, not so much everything that came after tho LOL.

Komi-San, June 2023. I'll be real, I never would have picked this for myself to watch, be me and boys have been watching stuff together and this was a pick from one of them. My first impression was this was just another dumb waifu bait show, but honestly its super cute and super funny. I enjoyed it a lot and can't wait for season 3!

Yakuza Kiwami, June 2023. I started Yakuza Zero, got halfway through and then stopped in 2022, and finally finshed Zero and got through Kiwami last year. I enjoyed it way more than Zero. I really enjoy Kiryu as a character and hope to start the next game soon!

Undead Girl Murder Farce, July 2023. A seasonal anime I picked up and enjoyed greatly. I think its a fun use of public domain characters and the OCs were delightful. I hope we get another season! It was a real sleeper hit for the season I think.

Columbo, August 2023. Yeah, I watched my first episode of Columbo because of a mystery kick UGMF put me on. The first episode I watched naturally was the first episode. I watched another episode on Christmas. I really enjoy this character, I wish I had more free time for this.

Slay the Princess, November 2023. An indie game I've had my eye on for a while because of ManlyBadassHero. The full thing came out and I really enjoyed it! I highly recommend it if you like spooky and romantic things.

Good Will Hunting, December 2023. Its a classic movie, and its been meme'd to death, and yet I've never watched it before now (Its not [my] fault). On my flight to Spain the plane had tablets built in for every seat where we could watch movies and stuff so I took that opportunity to watch a bunch of films I had never seen before (others were Top Gun, John Wick, and Elemental (which I saw in 2024 but otherwise I enjoyed it the most, a morbid curiosity/hate-watch that I loved unironically). I also got halfway through Mission: Impossible but ran out of time.) I'd recommend giving this a go if you haven't seen it. Its a classic for a reason and might give you dark academia peeps a good time LOL.

Zom100 and Bug Films - A Strenuous Relationship

The two aren't exactly on great terms. Originally off to a great start with the first episode, the relationship quickly settles outside of the honeymoon phase with the second episode onwards. Currently though we find ourselves in the middle of a spat as the final episodes have been indefinitely delayed.

Is Bug Films entirely to blame? Are they making bad decisions and it's purely their fault that Zom100 has been delayed?

Well, it's a bit of a loaded question, but I'd like to provide my own opinion on the matter.

So, production troubles and Zom100, I wrote about it a while ago to the tune of SHAFT's involvement. Nothing major, but enough to signal the challenges faced by the studio.

I want to take a better look at those struggles, and to do so I want to talk about Bug's past, both long term and recent.

Bug and Kawaoge originally appear on the anime scene as an outsourcing studio providing assistance on Second Key Animation. That's not a very big role, it essentially amounts to cleaning up key animation and making slight adjustments to lighten the load of the animation director.

Bug Films has a surprisingly interesting credit list for second key animation though, including popular and well received series like GWitch in their previous work. Of course, most of said outsourcing appears with smaller scale studios for productions like: Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible, The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 (part 1), and second key animation through the first half of Undead Girl Murder Farce.

The most interesting example of Bug outsourcing though is their work on My One-Hit Kill Sister.

Yeah, very interesting choice, but also incredibly interesting work. This is the only time that Bug Films is credited for first key animation outside of Zom100.

Still interesting, but less surprising, is the core trio of Bug Films featured on the ending. That is, Hayato Torii, Nomura Haruyoshi, and William Lee. The three of them comprise about half of the key animators for the ending (which is the second ending, but the first ending appears once? Weird production shenanigans), and deliver some really impressive cuts.

Continuing on the trend of fancy and pretty visuals, this trio is also featured on the first opening for Komi-San, which Kawagoe directed. Of course, Bug Films isn't credited on the OLM production, most likely because of the less-than-stellar relationship between the new studio and the parent it broke off from. Anyways, the trio delivers really solid cuts here under Kawagoe's vision, and give me my next talking point.

Notice anything potentially familiar about the above cut? I did, that's for sure. It's unsurprising, given they're prevalently featured animators in Kawagoe's work and studio, but there's layouts in the Komi-san openings that are re-used in the first episode of Zom 100. Here's just one example of that parallel. The widescreen ratio, the bottom up angle, the environment art, even the style of the running. There's a lot of similarities between the cuts.

It makes sense. You're a new studio and you want to wow viewers, but do so on a budget. Reusing a layout is a quick and easy way to get a head start on animation, that's for sure. It can just be... a bit sour, to some viewers potentially. Economic animation isn't something that always inspires faith in people, I'll say that.

But anyways, though it was brief, I think I provide enough examples to give myself something of a leg to stand on with my opinion. That's something I want to reiterate. All I can do is look from the outside in and put together puzzle pieces to form my opinion. We can't conveniently walk into Bug and ask these questions, we can only make conjectures.

Regardless, I believe that it's not Bug Films making intentionally poor choices, or animosity between staff and studio like Isekai Ojisan. Rather, I think it's simply the inexperience of them as a studio that has produced these struggles.

Since the second episode, the series hasn't "struggled" with maintaining quality. They make consistently smart and reasonable decisions that include the various delays. They're still able to provide very pretty cuts in some of the episodes as well. There's no breakdown in the staff, or any real fractures that have been imposed by poor decisions.

What we're seeing with this series is rather simple, it's the echoes of mistakes by the high level staff. Overestimating their studio, overextending with outsourcing (I'm not saying they have, but that it's a possibility), inaccuracy with timelines and expectations. Just simple things that appear when there's not a strong sense of confidence or organization, of which that's to be expected with a first time production.

I have faith with Bug Films to finish Zom 100 off strong, but I also won't discount the struggles that have appeared so far for the studio. I doubt they could have been avoided with this production, but I think that as studio it's an important learning experience for them. One from which they'll walk away with far more experience than what they entered with. Because of that, I'm hopeful to see how Bug will changes and grow as a studio, and what they might be able to do with the next series they pick up.
