Critical dynamics here- youkai/youkai relationships, youkai/human relationships, youkai/other relationships. All are distinct. The former, I suppose, is likely pretty casual- "forgetting" that humans need to breath in a conversation, or wondering aloud what bones are besides crunchy. The middle, well... I strongly suspect you've got this delicate ground- "am I fetishizing this?", "is she going to break and run when I start talking about how well she would go with leek and onion?", "how can safewords work when I can obliterate her with one kick", etc. Really delicate stuff to negotiate, fascinating to imagine what kind of sideline stuff Komakusa sets up sometimes.

And the third? *considers Komakase* Shameless fetishization. Absolutely shameless. Writing a callout post for that shinigami as we speak.

of course understanding what moe means also means understanding that youkai moe is a completely different and almost entirely unrelated thing (besides being a yuuka pun).

Sexuality Headcanon: The big gay.

Gender Headcanon: No real strong thoughts beyond “girl of some sort”.

A ship I have with said character: I’m pretty vanilla with Komachi pairings; Komaeiki and Komakase mostly. Komachi/Kutaka could be fun I guess?

A BROTP I have with said character: Komachi has a lot of good friendships. Her interactions with Tenshi are golden, though that’s more of a MOMTP. On a more indirect note, I’ve been thinking about Komiyoi lately since Suiyoi took off in last Lotus Eaters.

A NOTP I have with said character: Romantic Komaten right out.

A random headcanon: She’s absolutely told people embarrassing stories about when their famous ancestors were crossing the Sanzu.

General Opinion over said character: She’s grown on me significantly from first impressions to present day, present time.

Are there any ships you're a fan of?

I tend to like (and dislike) a lot of ships, but not really be an avid fan of any. My, uh, field of work gets me exposed to a lot of them, and I’m usually not too picky as long as it’s not too weird. A lot of the “obvious” ones are some like ReiMari and RenMerry, a couple more specific ones like JunHeca and KomaKase, and I guess TojiMiko deserves special mention. I’m not very passionate about AkyuSuzu, but I definitely read and appreciate Gensokyo of Humans as leaning in that direction. Mokou is conspicuously missing from that list, but I really don’t feel that strongly about who she’s shipped with - a lot of MokoKagu doesn’t really work for me, but other times it does. MokoKeine is consistently nice, but I don’t especially care if it’s romantic or not.

In terms of stories, I think I actually don’t care that strongly for “romance” as a genre, and especially not “getting together” stories, though I also don’t hate them. I just prefer ones where they’re already happily (or even just implicitly) together, whether that’s the focus of the story or not. That sort of thing just has a cozy atmosphere.

As usual, Kasen'smorning routine started before dawn. She woke up and sat by thewindow, meditating to the rising sun. Once it was in the sky, sherecited sutras for exactly an hour, and only then, once her spiritualneeds were taken care of, did she make herself a meager breakfast.Once she was all done eating, she opened her front door and preparedto start her day in earnest.And, almost immediately,tripped over the prostrate form of a shinigami.“Ow,ow.” Kasen pushed herself up and rubbed the spot where her foreheadhad bashed the floor, then glanced back over her shoulder. “...what are you doing here?”“Mmh?Oh, g'mornin'.” Komachi stirred in place, but seemed like she wasin no rush to stand up just yet.“Is that really any wayto greet me when you're sleeping on my front step? … I'm going toassume you at least weren't camping out to kill me, or you'd be more,er... alert.”“Mmhm, that's right.” Reluctantly,Komachi yawned and stretched, taking her time to get a running startat waking up. She finally rocked herself up to sitting and rubbed ather eyes. “I'm on vacation!”“Va...cation?”“Uh-huh. The outside world population keepsgrowing, so they've hired another shinigami to help share the workload. They've got her working the Gensokyo route while she learns theropes, since it's usually pretty uneventful. So! That means that yours truly gets a few days off!”“And...what does that have to do with you sleeping outside of myhouse?”“... a-ah. Er. Well...” Komachi shrank downa bit, and when she spoke again, her voice was rather more...restrained. “I've never gotten time off before, so I don't reallyhave anywhere to stay. I was hoping maybe I could crash at your placefor a bit?”“Crash at my...? You want to livewith me?”“If it's not too much trouble.”“We'rea hermit and a shinigami. Dowhatever you want.”* * *'WhateverKomachi wanted' turned out to be tagging along after Kasen, mostly.She took a bit too much enjoyment out of throwing meat to the eagles.She scooped up the raijuu without permission and let him crawl allover her for five minutes while Kasen frantically tried to catch him.She scratched the dragon behind the horns until he purred, probablysetting back three weeks of strict discipline training.“Man,”she said at the end, stretching. “Taking care of that many petsseems like a real hassle.”“It doesn't take as longwhen somebody isn't trying to pet all of them,” Kasen pointed out.“... and I try to keep busy, so if you came here to relax, I don'tthink you're going to enjoy yourself.”She made a pointof it, today more than ever. She traveled halfway down themountainside gathering medicinal herbs. She meditated at the base ofa waterfall. She sent hawks to spy on the human village and theshrines to make sure there were no spiritually pressing matters thatneeded her attention.Despite hours of this, Komachididn't complain until it was near evening. “Okay, okay, you're ahardworking hermit, I get it. Even a hermit has to eat dinnersometime, right?” Quickly, she added, “And don't try telling methat you just eat mist or something! I know better than that.”“Ido need to eat dinner, yes. … oh, I hadn't thought of that. I onlyhave enough food at home for one person.”Komachi didn'tseem concerned, even though her stomach chose that moment for athunderous growl. “Tell ya what, let's just find a good restaurantin the village. My treat.”* * *Kasen visited thevillage on a regular basis, but she didn't dinein it often. When they finally found a restaurant and walked inside,it made things pretty awkward, since hermits weren't really known fortheir love of fine dining. Bringing Komachi, a complete stranger tothe villagers, only made it worse. She heard the wait staffwhispering as they hurried off to fill the order, and sensed eyes onthe pair of them for a few minutes more.She waited untilthey were alone to say much. “... we might get fewer stares if youhadn't ordered three plates of food, you know.”“Ehe.Sorry, I can't help it! I really don't get to eat out thatoften.”“I suppose you don't.”“Oh!Speaking of which.” Komachi reached inside her robe and pulled outa bulging coin purse, then upended it on the table. Money spilledout—more than Kasen had ever seen in one place, and in morevarieties than she could imagine. Modern yen coins sat next tocorroded green mon, foreign currency, and even a few small discs ofpure gold. The flow only tapered off when Komachi closed the bagagain, and it still looked completely full. She dug through thechange on the table. “How much is food at this kind ofplace?”“It, er. Well, you'd have to check the menu.”Kasen didn't even manage to look up from the pile as she spoke. Aftera few seconds, though, another thought occurred to her. “... if youhave that much money, couldn't you have paid for a room at an inninstead of staying with me?”Komachi stiffened up, andjudging by her expression, Kasen knew she'd caught her red-handed.“A-ah, er...!” she stammered, and her face burned red. It didn'tlast long. “Ah, yep, you caught me. I thought it'd be a good way tokeep an eye on ya.”“... am I really being judged socarefully?”“Huh? No. I just mean, you know. You'realways out meditating and stuff when I stop by. I thought if I spenta few days around your place, you'd have to open up and show me whatyou're actually like when you manage to relax. Assuming that everhappens, of course.” Seeing the look of surprise on Kasen's faceonly emboldened Komachi further. She scooped up a few coins anddropped them into Kasen's palm, grinning. “Here, that should covermy room and board. And hey, while we're at it, feel like drinkingtonight? It's all on me.”

She tried her best in Wild and Horned Hermit, so I would say, yes, she would absolutely step in and handle it if the situation was such.

Huh, dunno what came over me. Anyways, I think there are probably other people in the Hell environment she's had relationships with in the past, but not satisfying ones.

General Thoughts:

Komachi as a character got hit really hard by fanon and then fanon backlash for me. "Ha ha, the shinigami is lazy!" and then you read her POFV dialogue and you conclude that no, she can't really be slacking off! She must have some deeper-

But she is slacking off. She really does not want to do her job, and part of that is very plainly moral objections to it, and part of that is very plainly that she just doesn't want to work. She may be burnt out, or she may just be a real underachiever, whatever, but the two sides coexist.

KomaKase thus becomes really great because on the one hand, Komachi knows that the afterlife is a brutal thing, and the laws of Heaven don't really exist by comparison to the jurisprudence of the yama monarchs, and Kasen doesn't even manage to abide by those! Something's so wrong with her! And simultaneously, Kasen's all about industriousness and purpose and not being an oni, and so she probably thinks "something wrong with her" about Komachi. At the same time, they're also very appealing for each other. They can't really make each other better, but they can make each other happy. Good for them!
