I know! Isn't it crazy?! Believe me, if there's one WIP I will finish even if it takes years, even if it kills me, it's "Rocks and Shoals". Kolyat and Oriana, my little shits, I love them so much. I actually have about 4.5k words already written for the next chapter, but I'm not finished with it just yet.

For those unaware, "Rocks and Shoals" is my Kolyat Krios/Oriana Lawson post-war fic in the Mass Effect fandom. Lots of wading through PTSD. Lots of grief and healing and clashing personalities. A bit of salty teens. A bit of found family. Very slow burn. They gotta get right with themselves before they can get right with each other, basically. I adore writing this piece.

Honestly, my biggest issue with it is that I wrote all the posted chapters in past tense way back then, and now I write everything in present tense, so the tonal shift might be jarring for some readers. But eh. I don't have the energy right now to go back and change the tense in the last nine chapters, and if I consciously try to write in past tense now, after not doing so for so long, I'll keep tripping myself up and never get into the flow of it. So I'm just going to write it as I feel and put an author's note about it in the chapter, lol.

And since you made me so insanely happy by asking about "Rocks and Shoals", I'm going to give you a little snippet. <3 So this is directly after Kolyat beat the shit out of that guy and Oriana had her little flashback/breakdown and Kolyat kind of lost it, you know, emotionally.

“You’re lucky the guy’s not comatose after what you did to him,” she snaps. 

Kolyat grabs her wrist, stopping her.  “Yeah, I get it, Lawson.  You can stop with the sanctimonious lecture now.” 

She purses her lips, frustration marring her features.  She drags her hand from his hold.  “Do you, though?” 

He gives her an impatient look. 

“Do you get it?  Really?” 

Kolyat rolls his eyes.  “What are you going on about now?” 

“You could have seriously hurt the guy!” she shrieks, hands thrown up in the air.  “Hell, you could have been seriously hurt.” 

“And what was I supposed to do?” Kolyat growls, his hands curling along the tabletop beneath him.  “Let him rob us?  Hurt you?  Or worse?” 

“We could have settled it without violence.” 

Kolyat scoffs.  “Yeah, sure.  Because the blade he pulled was clearly not an indication of his propensity to violence.” 

Oriana throws the cotton swab in her hand down onto the table, her chest rising in her vexation.  “And now you’re suspended for it.” 

“Don’t particularly care, Lawson.”  He rubs at his temple, the one not especially bruised.  His head is throbbing and she’s not making it any better. 

“You should,” she bites out. 

Kolyat slaps his hands along his thighs in surrender.  “You’re right.  I should.  Can we go now?”  He moves to stand fully. 

She pushes him back down with a hand on his shoulder.  “You’re still bleeding.” 

Kolyat gives her a baleful look.  “I’m fine.” 

“You’re not,” she says, a sharp breath sucked between her teeth, and then she glances to the floor, her brows furrowing, her jaw grinding.  “You’re not fine,” she croaks out. 

The break in her voice throws him, and he has to clamp his mouth shut, watching her. 

She peers up at him with a heated gaze, eyes wet with unshed tears.  “So stop saying that you are,” she bites out, her anger bleeding into her voice, her exhale of frustration sharp and ragged. 

Kolyat stares at her. 

“It’d be okay if you did, though.  It’d be okay to just... kind of break a little.” 

He thinks maybe he did.

i've had a lot of them that i've put in fics and then gone "can't believe nobody commented on this one smh" but i can't remember most of them. definitely one of them is sparky listening to heavy metal tho. apparently sharks enjoy heavy metal cause it reminds them of their prey thrashing around in the water so heavy metal would be popular among turians i think

how i feel about this character: THAT'S MY SON!!! i have a surprising amount of love for a character who only has like ten minutes of screentime in a game series that took me over 90 hours to complete, but here we are. we love angry teen going on a buckwild teenager runaway phase to spite his dad representation in this house. the amount of love i have for him hit me like a truck and i can pinpoint exactly when it happened and it was when he started spitting curses like an angry wet cat. like he gets punched across the face and is just like WHAT THE HELL, he called a cop a son of a bitch to his face??? and that's not even getting into how he spends the entire scene talking like he watched one too many heist movies and decided he knew how to hold someone hostage and commit murder when he can't even shoot someone when they're less than three feet from him with a pistol. i'm pretty sure he expected to get by on this hit with nothing by rage and prayer. it's such a shame that the devs basically shunted him off to the side in 3 cause i want more of him 😭😭

all the characters i ship romantically with this character: oh so this should be fun to explain. so, i only have one ship for him............. and it's him and grunt? they have all of one artist who hasn't drawn them since like 2019, who also wrote the one (1) fic on ao3, so i am once again in rarepair hell. i can't even really describe why i like them so much, but i think it's probably the whole opposites attract thing, grumpy/earnest combo... also they have a lot of april and andy energy and i like that a lot.

my non-romantic otp with this character: not counting his dad?? cause i mentioned loving them in my thane ask... i don't personally see him and oriana romantically at all, but i do adore the idea of them as best friends. also him and solana. in my current wip, the three of them are roommates.

my unpopular opinion about this character: i'm not sure how unpopular this actually is, but he is allowed to be absolutely pissed at his dad, he is allowed to still have jerk reactions where there's a X Doubt looming over his head because thane is trying yeah but it's still difficult to get along with him. people skip over this a looooot in fanfic because i guess it's not fun to write, so he and thane are just magically healed uwu they just get along uwu which just ain't realistic.

one thing i wish had happened with this character in canon: *stares longingly at the scrapped mission he and thane had in 3* oh yknow 😭😭😭

my otp: him and grunt l m a o

my cross over ship: don't have one

a headcanon fact: if he ever ended up with baby siblings, they'd realistically probably be like 20+ years his junior, but he would do everything in his power to make sure they don't feel unwanted like he probably did growing up. he didn't have a big brother to protect him, but he's here now so he'll protect them.

Fandoms: Alright, I’m going to stick just with the ones I’ve written for, though there are many I haven’t dabbled in yet but actively consider writing for.  So currently, Game of Thrones, Mass, Effect, Dragon Age, Naruto, X-Men, Harry Potter, Record of Lodoss War, Sailor Moon, Star Trek- Deep Space Nine.

Fic you spent the most time on: Oh, definitely ‘Secret Burdens’, my Storm/Wolverine X-Men fic from years ago.  That baby was my first disastrous attempt at longfic, and it took me almost seven years to finish.

Fic you spent the least time on: I mean, this is a boring answer, but any one of my many 100 word drabbles probably?  I’m not sure, the majority of my work is one-shots, so it’s anyone’s guess on that, considering I tend to finish one-scene one-shots in a single sitting.

Longest fic: ‘Sheparding Men’ at 92.391 words in the Mass Effect fandom, though unfinished.  And it looks like ‘From Instep to Heel’ will be overtaking that by the time it’s done.

Shortest fic: Aside from my 100 word drabbles and other drabble collections, my shortest stand-alone published fic is ‘Take Root’ at 743 words, from the Mass Effect fandom.  One of the faves actually, even still.

Most hits: ‘From Instep to Heel’ at 16.614

Most kudos: ‘From Instep to Heel’ at 945 (what the heck, I’m still reeling)

Fave fic you wrote: Oh god, we’re going there?  Damn, okay, um, I’m gonna list two then.  One that always comes to mind is ‘Reckoned from One Midnight to the Next’, a two-part poetic prose piece exploring grief and healing.  Mass Effect fandom.  Shepard/Kaidan.  Some of my favorite passages/language that I’ve used, especially since I write original poetry.  It was a way to meld my two loves, and honestly, this piece sticks with me even years later.

The second one would have to be ‘A Violence Done Most Kindly’.  Game of Thrones fandom.  Jon/Sansa.  It was my first successful longfic (and when I say ‘successful’ I don’t mean by reader reception, I mean I actually finished it and followed a semi-coherent plot, lol).  I was super proud of all the plotlines and thematic pieces I was able to tie together, all the meaning I was able to give to narratives that never got fully explored or finished in the show.  And it was a take I hadn’t seen done before, so I was proud of that.  The story holds a lot of meaning for me, and it was also a way for me to explore the Jonsa community even deeper, which was hugely impactful, and another reason why this story is considered my fave.

Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: There’s three actually - all unfinished WIPs that I still have lots of ideas for, but have since wondered from the fandoms and thus, the mindset, to be able to finish them properly.  The first being a Harry Potter fic from years ago, called ‘This Isn’t Me’.  Hermione/Draco, post-war, PTSD exploration.  I still think about it a lot.

The second one is ‘Sheparding Men’.  Mass Effect fandom, with Shepard/Kaidan, Shepard/Thane, and Shepard/Garrus all explored to differing degrees.  But that one takes a lot out of me, since that Shepard is so dark and emotionally damaged, and it spans the length of all three games.  I love her to pieces, but man is it emotionally exhaustive to wade through her shit and get it to the page.

The third one is my baby ‘Rocks and Shoals’.  Also Mass Effect fandom.  Kolyat/Oriana.  One of my dearest pieces.  I have so much in mind for them, and I want to finish their story so bad, but this is another one that takes it out of me emotionally.  Why do I always get myself into these post-war, PTSD-riddled, haunting, survival-themed type of stories?  It’s my niche, I guess, I don’t know.  But yeah, Kolyat and Ori are my babies, my little shitheads.  I think of them often.

From the upcoming chapter of ‘From Instep to Heel’:

She sighs again, this time sharper, a tug at her lungs, eyes roving over the city.  “Jon is...���  She bites her lip, keeps her gaze resolutely from her brother.

Robb runs his free hand through his hair, brow drown down in concern.  “Not the prince you imagined?”

She glances to him, watches the way the blaring sun glints like fire off his hair.  That blood-red hair.  “Is any of this like we imagined?” she asks softly.

Robb purses his lips, looking ahead as they walk.

Sansa thrums her fingers along his arm in thought, gaze returning to the city beneath them.  “He is, perhaps, inelegant at times, but I feel he has – "  She stops, tries to find the words, huffs over their inadequacy.  “I think he is a man of deep feeling.”

Kolyat x Oriana?

So, this is not at all a critique on the ship, but why do so many people ship Kolyat Krios and Oriana Lawson? It it because there both younger characters or is there an interaction between them I’ve missed? I would love an answer from someone who ships them or at least knows what I’m out of the loop on; I’m really curious.
