Maligned Yuri Bracket: Preliminary Round!
How is Jenny Dolittle/Lynn Lambretta (Mouretsu Pirates) maligned?
"while they are a canon wlw couple, not enough people have watched this anime!! even though it's really good!!! crime!!!"
How is Amami/Kokoro Komadori (Yuri Espoir) maligned?
"Nobody has read the manga </3 Every day I try to get people to read it and it is a task that I'm both blessed and cursed with. Also my most active Yuri Espoir mutual deactivated so now about half of the tumblr content for it cannot be found through the search function, life is suffering"
How is Kei Sugiura/Rei Yokoe (School Zone) maligned?
"they are both the dumbest woman alive but in opposite directions - and rei can’t actually confess her love for kei without immediately backing out and saying it was a joke"

It's funny seeing mostly panels of Kokoro having fun yuri brainrot, it gives you certain idea of Yuri Espoir when she's also dissociating evey chapter.
That is not to say those panels are fake or not what Yuri Espoir is about, the slice of life yuri comedy aspect are played straight and they are a genuine part of the plot because this is Kokoro's escapism. The manga doesn't mock Kokoro for her silly fantasies, it's very sympathetic to her even when she isn't to herself. The realities of the sketchbook characters aren't about showing the harsh reality of life compared to fantasy, they are often silly just in another direction, sometimes they're heartwarming, sometimes they aren't romantic, sometimes they're bittersweet, sometimes they're melancholic and then there's the one that's tragic and devastating.
It's similar to how Asahina and Souya are genuinely friends who have cute moments that makes you want to ship them but also Souya is forcing a teenager to marry him and Asahina is so in love with him he will be complicit and go against everything he believes in.
It's not sweetness vs the world of horrors, it's about how they both exist at the same time.

Isn't Souya Hanakago really the Touga Kiryuu of Yuri espoir? Especially in the way he wants to act like the "prince charming" for Kokoro, him possibly being SAed by an older person...his "love" for Kokoro is fundamentally different from Amami's genuine love for her. He wants to be the person who makes Kokoro happy. It's more about him thinking of Kokoro as a damsel and being/performing as a "lover" for her. Also the way he's in lesbians' business just pisses me off like Touga did, lmao.

I started reading Yuri Espoir today. I really like that in Kokoro’s made-up yuri stories about the pairs of women she encounters she always finds a way to put “yuri” in at least one of their names

KNOCKOUTS: Yuri Espoir (2019 - ?)
Yuri Espoir (or Yuri de Naru♥Espoir) is an ongoing romcom by Mai Naoi about a teen girl escaping from her impending arranged marriage by fantasising about strangers being gay.
After finding out she is to be forced into an marriage of convenience as soon as she graduates high school, Kokoro sees her life ending before her eyes at her father's wishes. And so in her final year of high school, she decides to indulge in her love of other women, and create an incredible sketchbook of lesbian romance to leave behind as her legacy. As she observes the young women of her town, she learns more about their desires, their struggles, and the unpredictable whims of love. - MAL
ENG localised by Tokyopop, JP available at Book Walker.
CWs under the cut. General severity rating: significant.
suggestive scenes
arranged marriage <- between a teenager and a grown man. inciting incident. universally framed as negative. it and kokoro's intense discomfort surrounding it is frequently explored.
grooming/predatory adults <- arranged marriage above. ch3 states that the art teacher is known for making advances on students, but this ends up being a false rumour (heads up though that he's still very... Not Normal about one of his students being engaged to an adult). the same rumour is brought up in ch11. ch11.5, a background character talks about how he was dating a high school girl and is really gross about it. there's just generally a lot of talk of predatory behaviour throughout.
sexual violence <- part and parcel with the above. primarily just implied through a general fear of the impending marriage. ch2 nightmare sequence has implied sa. ch11, a character talks about being assaulted, but its later revealed that she was lying.
violence <- slapping every once in a while. ch6 has some mild bloody imagery as a metaphorical device.
heteronormativity & misogyny <- also part and parcel with the arranged marriage of it all. minor scenes involving side characters.
homophobia <- brief depiction in ch3.5.
vomiting <- scene in ch8. on a scale from 1 to 5 where 1 is a "blehhh" sound effect from another room, and 5 is that one scene in chainsaw man, i'd say this comes at like a 3, maybe 4. another scene in ch11.5 which is more of a 2?
disordered eating / purging? - ch13, character tries to throw up essentially as a coping mechanism for anxiety?
panic attack in ch13
ch15.5 in particular touches on very sensitive issues, and includes a warning at the start of the chapter for homophobia, depression, blood, death, and suicide. not massively gory but it is both bleak and relatively graphic. not counting this chapter to the warnings above since its self contained.

i think the thing that satisfies me the most about yuri espoir is that at not point does the author try to make the reader sympathize with the man who's engaged to the lead. the lead, kokoro, is a lesbian; the only time in which she expresses she would enter a relationship with a guy is out of duty. she constantly fantasizes about entering a wlw relationship. souya, her fiance, is represented with a blacked out face. when kokoro's friend(and love interest) amami sets out to try to draw him from kokoro's description of him, he inevitably ends up looking monstrous. his presence only serves to remind the reader and kokoro that her freedom ends at graduation; that her self, with all her desires and dreams, will die. In a lot of instances in the manga he recites phrases that in most other series are shown as good: “all i want is to make kokoro happy.”, “well, ideally i’d like you to enjoy yourself. but it’s not working.”, and the most cliche one “it’s just that i’m inexperienced when it comes to social interactions… i don’t have many friends and i’ve never had a relationship with a lady before. i might hurt you in my ignorance. but i swear i’ll do everything i can… to protect everything that you are”. every time i've read/seen/heard these (or something similar to this), authors often expect readers to think that no matter how creepy, predatory, just overall bad person a character is, that we should give them a chance because they're "ignorant" and/or "inexperienced". kokoro's opinion of him doesn't change, and thus, the reader's opinion of him is not expected to change. kokoro even wishes death on him after the last line.
when kokoro's art teacher, asahina, is revealed to be in love with souya, he doesn't disclose any redeeming qualities about him. in fact, he puts him in a worst light as he indirectly singles out souya as a predator. after his spiel on how adults should look out for children by not taking advantage of them, he ends up conflicted because souya isn't a good person according to his own beliefs. because there's no way to excuse his friend's actions.
at no point during the manga does the guy stops being the gross man who got engaged to a high schooler (set to marry as soon as she graduates), the man that fell in love with a child, the man who knows nothing of his intended other than the memory he interpreted as he liked.
