Yes,I'm gonna talk about THE KISS 💜🌈

I'm still jumping around my home and seeing all the Kokonui edits I can find, 24h later and the hype doesn't go away.

So I wanna talk about why seeing this kiss animated (specially in such a beautiful way, really, thanks Liden Films), was so important for me.

I started to watch anime when I was little and, besides Dragon Ball, Sakura and Sailormoon were the first animes that really catch my attention.

Sakura specially will always have a place in my heart 💜

(and yes, I know CLAMP had a lot of dark shit going on on their mangas, but when I was a kid, I only saw the queerness and that made me happy)

I was around eight/nine years old, it was the end of the 90s and the queer representation in occident was... Terrible. It didn't almost exist and was full of "kill your gays" and queerbating.

Suddenly, I was watching a show were it was okay for a girl like Tomoyo being in love with her best friend, were nobody had any problem with Xioran being oppenly bisexual (he likes Yukito before Sakura), were Toya and Yukito became my first ship ever. I used to scream to the tv with their scenes, saying things like "okay, gave Yukito your magic, but say that you love him Toya! Focus! Kiss!"

Then, Sailormoon had Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus that were girlfriends. More than one character with genderfuckery. The three Sailor Stars that were genderfluid in a legendary level.

Ranma was also there. Non-binary dream for me, thanks Ranma 💜

I'm saying that, for a queer kid in the 90s, the level of genderfuckery that anime had made me felt seen. Made me felt like I wasn't that weird for liking the girls in my class, for not feeling like a boy or a girl (even if it took me decades to realize why). This characters, this representations, made me felt less alone. Made me think for the first time in my life, that there was other people like me, that being straight and follow gender roles wasn't the only choice out there.

Edit, because I forgot to mention Utena. The girl that refuses to adapt to gender roles and ends ups becoming her own prince and saving her girlfriend from the abusive brother. Utena was also mythical for me.

Of course, not everything was wholesome in the way of portraying queer representation in anime and manga, I'm not saying that.

So that was what got me into anime, what made me start buying manga with my small allowance.

A few years later, I discovered fanfiction.net, yaoi and BL. I found a place on the internet full of people shipping characters that were like me. A place were it was safe being queer. I also started getting into shonen, were the queerness wasn't as magical as in shoujo, but thanks mostly to the fandom, it was still there. I could ship them even if it wasn't canon, because most of this characters never had a romantic interest, so... Who said they were straight? (Obviously, even if they were in canon, we could ship them anyway)

And this is what I'm trying to say. More than twenty years later of seeing myself in a character like Tomoyo, of starting to ship gay couples in anime...

I COULD FINALLY SEE A GAY KISS BEING ANIMATED IN A SHONEN!!!

So no matter what you think about this ship, about Koko and Inupi relationship, no matter if you like it or you hate it...

What happened yesterday was really important for a lot of people. Because having referents, can save queer people lives. Is that simple.

So thanks Liden Films, thanks Ken Wakui 💜

Of course, I also had a big hype when this scene happened in the manga and Wakui gave us so much gay subtext (not so subtle most of the time), that I could make a whole post about queerness in Tokyo Revengers. But let's be honest, there is a lot of only anime watchers out there. Or a lot of people that, like me, discovered manga thanks to anime.

With all the new kokonui canon evidence coming out in the extra content and such, dudebros are doing Olympic level mental gymnastics to believe that they're just guys being dudes. At this point koko could look into the camera and say "I have gay gay homosexual feelings for inupi" and dudebros will still be like lol nah shippers are delusional stop making straight characters gay

I don't even usually believe ships that haven't been stated explicitly to be together are canon, but wakui did everything except state it outright 😩 and you KNOW if one of them was a girl, it would be assumed that they were together

1 • the animation

the anime adaptation is absolutely hideous and extremely offensive bc what the fuck?? this is so bad and yet yall are eating it up.

everytime i see an edit of the anime i just start shaking and sobbing uncontrollably (especially the takemichi ones bc how can you guys find him handsome in the anime when he's even uglier than kiyomasa)

my friends and i have this really fun challenge where we have to watch a tokyo revengers episode without laughing at the animation (we always end up failing after like 3 minutes)

2 • those dumb kokonui shippers 🤓

don't get me wrong, i love this ship sm i want them to get married and have kids

i just hate ppl who enjoy this ship for this exact panel :

koko is a really well-written character who is clearly in pain after losing a girl he was in love with (as silly and childish his crush on her might have seemed) and with a very visible mental instability, and yall are choosing to close your 12 years old ass eyes on that just so you can have ship content, gross

Morning sunlight draped over Nagi like a soft blanket whilst he slept haphazardly on one of the library's windowsill. It was a common occurrence to see Nagi skipping class for a catnap, so Reo was not even phased by this ludicrous sight. His heart, however, could not help the also common somersaults that came by Nagi Seishiro's sight.

The expression on his face was calm, similar to the one he wore every day — but minus the customary indifferent look on his eyes, and adding the halo of light scattered over his snowy locks, he looked angelic.

Like his factions were carved by God himself, Nagi Seishiro, on Mikage Reo's eyes, was the very image of perfection.

He walked closer to the beautiful thing in front of himself, his footsteps creaking on the old wooden floor of the bookstore.

The trees danced outside the window, drawing the curtains with them in their soft dance. But it was Nagi's eyelashes, who danced along the sway, who orchestrated the pleasure.

Wind reached his way and mingled with his own violet locks, tickling their way in his nose like pixie dust, making the experience feel even more surreal.

Reo felt out of his body, like he was presencing this moment from afar, waiting for himself by the door with a disapproving look on his face while his body moved on his own on the other side of the room.

He could see the way he raised his hand to brush a strand of Nagi's hair away from his face, but the movement felt alien, controlled by invisible threads that the Reo outside the room was moving.

He knew what he was doing, and yet, he didn't. He had passed his hands by Nagi's hair a thousand of times before, and yet, this felt like the first time.

And he was scared Nagi would wake up from the loud sound of his heartbeat, but he couldn't help get closer. Enticed.

Nagi's eyelashes rested beautifullly over his cheekbones, and Reo wondered if his friend would wake up if he dared touch them with the tip of his finger. Maybe he would slip through his fingers again.

That thought alone was enough to pull Reo away from his thoughts for a moment.

Again. Right, because Nagi had already melted into nothing and left Reo behind a couple of times.

He had promised himself he would not be the same person when Nagi came back, and yet here he was, silently longing over someone who would not even look at him when he wakes up.

Reo was just that stupid.

/Maybe you should leave him behind, too/ A voice on his head said and Reo hated himself for not being able to do that, because he had tried, but his love for Nagi always kept pulling him back.

It was like walking against the current, and Reo's legs had eventually tired of trying and had let him drift once more. It was comfortable enough, to keep hiding his feelings just for a moment more alongside Nagi.

But he didn't know when it would be the last, when Nagi would grow tired of him again and leave him behind for something new, and it scared him more than it showed.

He lived with the fear of Nagi leaving him again. Of being replaced, as easily as it had been the first time.

But while his friend was asleep, he seemed harmless, and Reo could almost feel completely at peace by the sight.

Nagi had always been out of his reach, he knew that, but the boy was sitting in front of him and it suddenly felt tangible. Like every worry had been sweeped out of his mind just with him staying by his side.

But Reo had to make sure, to not cut his heart open again with imaginary things. If Nagi was reachable, something Reo could touch, then it didn't matter getting his own blood on his hands. He was willing to hand him his heart on a silver platter if need be.

He reached his hand out, brushing the tip of his finger over Seishiro's pale cheekbone, down to his jaw and rested it on his chin.

Nagi's lips were slightly parted, and it tempted Reo like it was the last drop of water in the desert.

And it felt wrong.

His hand on Nagi felt wrong, because if his friend were awake, this wouldn't be happening. He would have never been able to look at him with eyes that hoped for everything, still. He would have to be pretending, like he constantly found himself doing lately.

It was tiring to have to put on a facade every day just so he wouldn't scare Seishiro away. So the other wouldn't feel overwhelmed by the intensity of Reo's feelings for him.

Ah, but he was asleep, wasn't he? Reo didn't need to hide himself anymore.

It was soft — almost innocent, if what he was doing wasn't wrong — the way his lips felt on Nagi's. Featherlight and sweet.

And so, so wrong.

He left Nagi behind without a word, his hands trembling uncontrollably at his sides, and his breathing heavy like he had run a marathon.

His insides churned with every step he took away from the library, and still, his heart felt giddy, rewarded.

Kokonui and Bajifuyu is like shipping siblings

Their canonical relationship is like this, but I don't see any problem in people who ship them lmao

Personally I don't ship bajifuyu, although I have to say that their fanarts are beautiful. (I used to ship them but they don't excite me anymore to tell the truth) I like kokonui, but it's not one of my favorites. I've never read about them, but I have written.

Simply shipping has nothing to do with canon. That's the point. You can't blame people for what they can or can't do just because it's one way in canon, am I explaining myself?

Although people take a lot of interactions from the canon and do hcs with them, and that's not bad, nor is it sexualizing. It's like when those of us who ship rinzu point out that their suits have each other's eye color in Bonten. We know it's not canon, we're just having a good time

Also, by the way (because this is another argument I've seen), saying 'you can't ship this character because he's straight' is assuming they're straight when the author didn't say anything. That's something wrong and shows how heteronormative society is.

Let people do what they want lol

took me years to get souya’s color to this, still not 100% satisfied, honestly not much thoughts on the colors of ‘rindou’. guess work. anyways i love them i was incredibly hyperfixated on them for a bit bc i was hyperfixated on shion and i hc that they’re friends. they get like... 5/10 bc the blues clash idk. also 5 is yet another shade of light blue so they all match!

i also was hyperfixated on them when i was hyperfixated on rinsou lol. anyways i hc that rinsou started dating first and rahoya tried to get them to stop dating with all their might only to end up horrendously down bad for each other. a lot worse than rinsou. and they were fucking stupid about it and kept annoying all their friends. actually i should make a post on this and all my rinsou and rahoya and shion and other hcs bc there are too many. anyways their colors are a slightly better version of rinsou, just orange. 6/10

i also love them a little too much... ignoring the fact that they talked abt seeing each other as brothers in canon bc no thank you and i overread that anyway,, love the sanzu color ngl even tho it doesn’t even match his hair but together with that yellow.... well. not as much. 4/10?

We deserved to know the canon reason why Inupi ended up in juvie

and his (and Koko’s) reaction.

I feel he’d be mad at first and glacially impassive later about the sentence.I guess he’d missed Koko and viceversa but at the time I guess neither of them would have been able to say out loud things like “I miss you”,because of all their communication problems.

We see when he gets out that he’s the same, BD uniform and thinking about the reforming the gang the very second he’s out again. Juvie didn’t do shit to “reform” him.I wonder how Koko felt(besides missing Inupi but, see above, incapable of saying it directly).

Maybe this situation worsened his sense of guilt he already had? Maybe he felt he failed to protect Inupi? But I guess Inupi kind of understood how Koko felt, so maybe his being impassible was also to “reassure” Koko that he was “okay” for how much being in juvie/reform school can be okay. 

TL:DR We need multiple kokonui spin offs for every TL and to address all the unsold & Inupi's pov lol

Personally, I honestly think this has been happening since the beginning, because the characters' ages just do not make sense to me, some of them are literally 13! The big bad guy is 13 fucking years old manipulating literal adults into committing heinous crimes! And none of them have parents? Sure, they probably wouldn't get mixed up in gangs if they had great home lives, but literally no one except Baji seems to have a parent who at least somewhat cares what their child is up to?! You cannot tell me that Wakui planned for them to be that young from the start, my guess is they were at least supposed to be high schoolers, if not maybe even older, but that wouldn't appeal to the majority of the Shōnen demographic.

Edit: I also truly believe that's the only reason Kokonui wasn't explicitly made canon, and that's not my shipper heart talking, that's the philologist in me speaking.
