Birth Of A Liar Part Three
||Part One||Part Two||Part Three||Part Four||Part Five||
Oh boy, I have some angst in store for you today let me tell you. This poor boy has been through a lot.
Trigger warning for murder, taking care of babies, bl**d, and cl*wns
DICE...everyone liked the sound of that. Hanako gloated that it was like she was in one of those secret spy organizations like in the movies and, well Kokichi couldn’t agree more. He did sneak into a cinema once or twice so he knew a thing or two about evil organizations. Not that he thought he was evil, hell no, couldn’t be farther from the truth. But from Maki and Goro’s comments about stealing being evil it was kind of hard not to have that mindset.
So he went with it. Even practiced making evil faces in the mirror a few times. Practice makes perfect after all.
And would you know it the young boy actually loved having company. Sure Goro was quiet and always apologizing for the dumbest things, Maki scared the shit out of him, and Hanako cried for almost everything, but it was fine. Besides, Hanako taught him a really great trick to guilt-trip adults. All he had to do was cry. That easy. Just cause a scene and everyone would go to your aid. Plus with extra people they were able to get more things like televisions and game consoles. It wasn’t stealing, it was giving to orphans and that wasn’t evil...right?
However it really wasn’t an organization with only four people...in the movies they had more members. So once as Kokichi was sitting in front of the store he usually steals or guilt-trips people to buy from he sees something odd going on in the street. A woman carrying a bundle in her arms while another man chases her from behind. He seemed to have a gun in his hands, the woman was running for her life! A headache filled the boy’s head as a memory crossed his mind. He was smaller. A woman with black hair holding him. A man with purple hair knocking a gun out of the hand of a man pointing it right for him. Cringing at the slight pain Kokichi held his head. He didn’t know why he did this but he got up and chased the man.
His feet were not as fast as the man however and out of no where there’s a loud bang. Then a baby crying. Kokichi quickly hid behind a brick wall. It was a good thing he did too, since the gunned ban came out of the alleyway with a handful of cash leaving a crying baby at his wake. Should he dare look back there? He definitely wouldn’t like what he was going to see. Still he turned around slowly into the dark alleyway. The woman was face down in a puddle of blood while the baby cries brokenhearted and afraid beside her. Cautiously Kokichi approached the woman and checked for signs of life. There was none. Also for a second he could see the woman being that black haired woman carrying him in his memories which made him gasp and fall back.
“N-No...t-that’s not mama...” He consoled himself. She’s probably okay and will come back for him, after all the body was gone the next day, who’s to say an ambulance didn’t pick her and his father up and bring them to safety? Now they’re just looking for him! But this baby...what if something happens to it? It was much too young to take care of itself like he was. Ooooh but what would Maki and the rest say? He has to decide quickly, the sounds of sirens were coming closer and closer.
-------------------
“YOU BROUGHT HOME A BABY?!” Maki’s loud tone of voice made Kokichi jump and the baby cry even louder. “Yeah! It’s our new pet! Surprise!” Maybe if he pretends it’s a gift they won’t get so mad. He was wrong. Goro smiles politely, even if it was easy to see the baby just made more worry on him. Maki was very angry, angry enough to beat Kokichi to a bloody pulp and she probably would have if he wasn’t cradling a baby in his arms. Hanako was very excited though, jumping up and down to try to see the baby.
“Babies aren’t pets, dipshit.” Maki growled holding her temples. She does her best not to curse in front of little ones but by God was she in a bad mood. Even Goro could see the steam rising out of her. Maybe he should try to heal the situation a little bit.
“Now now, Maki. You did the same thing when Hanako was in danger.” Goro tries to put a hand on his sister’s shoulder before she pulls away. “That was different! You can’t just STEAL a baby! What if the parents find out? What if they find out about us?”
Kokichi was silent, he shows the blanket with a bloodstain on it.
“They won’t...it’s mom is dead.”
“D-Don’t call them an ‘it’! And what about their dad?!”
“I-I dunno! W-Why are you yelling at me? You’re scaring the baby!”
Maki quickly took the baby from Kokichi’s arms and examined them. Their cries getting louder and louder, the baby thrashed and moved. Finally Maki looks at the others, her eyes closed. “They need a diaper change.”
“W-What?!”
“N-No way am I doing that again! I already used to change yours, I’m not doing THAT again.”
“Ewww hehehe!”
“You don’t have to. You just need to get me some diapers and diaper cream. You steal from the store all the time, right?” Maki states, bouncing the baby on her shoulder. That oddly seemed to calm it down a little. How was she this gifted with kids? “Fine, but don’t let it barf or poop or whatever on our stuff. Hana, stay with Maki and help her with the baby. Goro, come with me.” True to his leader form Kokichi gives orders imminently and the rest follow. Perhaps what Maki said was right. Being a leader does run in his “jeans”. As ordered Kokichi managed to snag a bag of diapers and diaper cream as Goro distracted the workers as usual. Man Kokichi hopes he doesn’t grow much taller because stealing is way easy because of his height. At long last they arrive at the abandoned building they lived in.
“We got the-”
“Give me that.” Maki practically took the supplies out of his arms. She must be really desperate to stop the infants crying. Even Hanako was covering her ears. Swiftly Maki places the baby on a table and begins working. Curiously Kokichi looked over Maki’s shoulder to see what she was doing and then quickly regrets it, his face turning green and close to dry heaving. That was a horrible idea. Yet Maki seemed...unbothered by it? It was almost mesmerizing at how fast she changed them. Once she was done the crying...stopped?
“Did you fix it?” Kokichi asked, now feeling better from the peace and quiet without the baby yowling.
“Did you fix him. He’s a boy.” Maki corrects him as she cradles the child. “And yes. He’s fine now. Also his name is Kenji...” The baby quickly falls asleep in her arms finally making the place quiet.
“How do you know?” asked Goro tilting his head to the side. Maki simply shows Kenji’s tiny chubby arm to reveal a hospital bracelet on it.
-Kenji Date, DOB: 7/6/20XX, Paitent ID: 11037
So the baby was probably born recently given how close the dates were, maybe about one month old. Still Maki was looking angry with Kokichi, but didn’t do anything. “C’moooon you can’t stay mad at me forever can you? Look at this faaaace. It would be sad without my ultimate assassin friend.”
“Call me that again and you’ll be the next victim...” she warns, her eyes narrowing again. “But aren’t assassins and murderers different things?” Kokichi asks, honestly confused. “They’re the same thing, dumbass...” Well shit he didn’t know. Another awkward silence.
“I guess everything worked out in the end though. And hey! We can add more members with other orphans! Think of this, a whole network of orphans working together to protect each other!”
Maki shook her head. “That sounds like a cartoon...”
“But you’d watch it, wouldn’t you?”
“Fine, I guess so...but no babies okay? They’re really hard to take care of as it is.”
And with that promise, DICE gained more and more members. In about a few years the whole place would be practically crawling with orphans or kids who wanted to be away from abusive homes. In fact so many orphans had lived there that they even had to move some to upstairs rooms. And with more members came cool new stuff! More toys, books, games, anything they could steal they would. It was like running their own little orphanage. However they did have to have some other leaders in power too making sure the other’s stayed in line. Kokichi picked nine others to “co-star” as he put it in his operation. Of course Maki was one, so was Goro, but because he was immature only the tall kids get to be the co-leaders.
“But you’re shorter than all of them! How are you leader?” Hanako asked one day as everyone was making masks to wear for Halloween to play their usual pranks and to hide their identity. “Because I came up with this idea so, as it’s so plainly obvious to see, I should be leader!” Kokichi grins booping the girl on the nose. “Hmph! Well I thought only tall people could be leader so...”
“Nhyhehehe, oh Hana. Tell you what, if anything ever happens to me, you become leader okay?” He tips his leader hat and flaunts his cape as if he was trying to be dramatic. Though how dramatic can you be with an old baseball cap and a tattered old bed sheet flowing behind you? Hanako looked hopeful as her eyes sparkled. “I can have the hat and cape too?” Kokichi dramatically held the bed sheet in front of himself like a vampire would. “Any perks of being DICE leader you can have. But I won’t be leaving any time soon you know~”
As the children drew their masks, Kokichi starts the meeting.
“Hello my fellow crime syndicates! As you know, today is Halloween. We’ve been waiting for this day all year my friends. And finally it came!” The whole building filled with applause which made him laugh. Maki just shook her head. If he keep it up they’ll be found out but he kept everyone so...so together. “Now I know what you’re thinking...’why would we be making clown masks for?’ Well I’ll tell you! Bring in the boxes!”
Hoards of boxes came rushing in being displayed in front of all the children eliciting “oohs” and “ahhs” This was probably their biggest heist yet! Never have the kids seen so much stuff come in before, not even food. What sort of wonders awaited inside those containers? “Now, open!” The bigger kids opened the box to reveal the most amazing thing! Costumes and prank supplies covered the ground. This was the year! This was the year they have an actual, real Halloween! All the kids went forward to grab some stuff but the co-leaders organized them into a single file line to make sure everyone got a costume and supplies.
“Sorry, all the costumes are clown costumes but, hey that’s why I made you all make the masks!” Kokichi exclaimed. Everyone didn’t mind. This was a fun activity and now they had something they can do that normal kids with parents usually do! However Maki was the only one to speak up. “You got crates of costumes? How do you expect not to get caught?! You know they have security cameras, right?” Kokichi shrugged his shoulders and places his hands behind his head. “So? Look at their faces! Even Kenji and Hanako are smiling! Worrying about that stuff will just ruin the moment so just reeeelax a bit Maki.” It was true. The kids looked more happy than ever. But something inside her seemed like this was going to be a bad idea...
Once everyone was dressed they all hit the streets. Each child knew about their one rule: no killing. Their leader was against murder in any way possible teaching the children how horrible death was and how they should avoid it. All of the kids got a costume, as well as eight of the Co-Leaders, but Maki and Kokichi were left without one. “I don’t mind. As long as the kids have one I will just go as Kokichi Ouma for Halloween.”
Boy was this the most fun these children have ever had, With their clown suits and masks on their faces they made mischief in the city. Toilet paper rolls on houses, chalk graffiti on walls, water buckets on doors, the whole place was crawling with little clown gremlins causing mayhem in their wake. It was enough to make Kokichi proud. “Oh this is enough to bring a tear to my eye~!” The leader claims dramatically. Maki just rolled her eyes and said nothing, however she was happy to see the children having the time of their lives. However she stops as she was walking, looking like a deer in headlights at the televisions in a shop window. Kokichi waves his hand in front of her as to get a reaction. All she could do was point.
A newscaster on the screen started talking, a picture of a clown at his side, underneath the headline states: “Clown thieves hit the streets”. Kokichi could feel the lump forming in his throat.
“Good evening.” The newscaster began as he bangs his stack of papers on the table once to align them. “A group of pranksters? Or a group of kidnappers? A hoard of clown suit wearing children hit the streets today causing panic and anger across the city. We have no idea where they come from or what they want, but they continue to wreak everything in their path. We go live to our reporter, Michiko Nakajima.” The screen changes to a woman in a dress with a microphone in her hands. Kokichi could have sworn that the woman was behind him somewhere.
“Thank you, Natsumi-San. I am standing here on the very street where young Kenji Date was taken from his mother’s arms seven years ago. His mother shot dead in an abandoned alley. They couldn’t find the killer or the child’s body, however one clown who has been taken into custody had Kenji’s hospital bracelet in his pocket!” The screen shows a picture of Kenji, his mask off, looking sad and disappointed. The two leaders could feel their souls about to fly from their body.
“I like where I am! You’re not gonna take me to some stinky orphanage!” Kenji exclaimed on the screen as two men take him away. “Luckily the father was still alive to bring little Kenji back home to his rightful place.” The reporter finishes as it then cuts to a man who has red puffy eyes. It seems he had been crying. This makes Kokichi feel immense guilt rise up in the pit of his stomach. “I’m just happy I can finally see my son...these clown people took seven years of me getting to know him.” The man looks like he could break down at any second. “He won’t even call me ‘dad’, he just says ‘where’s Kokichi and Maki’ or Kokichi will save me’!”
The name “Kenji” meant “an intelligent child” but also meant “ public prosecutor”. It all made sense in a way. Just like his own name, “Kokichi”, meant “little luck”. Right now he was having no luck. Maki was beginning to sweat too. From the corner of her eye she could see the news reporter and camera crew come closer. “This makes it even more curious. Years ago another child had been lost after his parents death. Kokichi Ouma, then three years old, was deemed lost as both his parents were killed by his father’s own gang. Another, Maki Haruwaka, the youngest of many children, killed her father in cold blood before leaving with her older brother Goro Haruwaka. Both these children have yet to be found, but law enforcement is still on the look out.”
Without warning Maki began to run. She knew this was a horrible idea! No one would even know their secret if Kokichi just did an inside Halloween party instead like they usually do.
“M-Maki wait-”
But it was too late, she already ran too far. He tries to catch her, but was stopped by a big brawny man who held him by the shoulders. Kokichi kicked and thrashed, but the man had no trouble taking him to where he wanted him to go.
“Maki!!!”
The newscaster looks back at the camera, obviously excited by this rise in the story she was reporting.
“We have word that we might have just found the lost children Kokichi Ouma and Maki Haruwaka! Could this be a clue to find more missing children? We will give updates as soon as they’re avalible. Michiko Nakajima, Tokyo news.”

Birth Of A Liar Part Two
||Part One||Part Two||Part Three||Part Four||Part Five||
More of the boy’s backstory, including a cameo from a special someone. Oh boy will that someone hurt.
Trigger warning for abuse, murder, and an unlikely pair-up
Days went by since that horrible day of his parents death. Days became months, and months became years. How the young boy managed to keep himself alive for that long was a miracle in itself. He mostly would stand outside shops making sad pouty faces until the owner or someone who would give him a half-eaten sandwich or, if he was lucky, a soda bottle. One time a kind man bought him this really sweet grape drink he really liked. It was cold, sweet, and tasted like sweet grapes. He was too young to read back then, but the man called it “Grape Panta” and oh boy was he hooked on it.
Not only would he beg for food and drink, sometimes he would outright steal using his small height to his advantage. The cashier at the local bakery leaves for a few minutes? He’d just sneak in and go around the back of the display and steal a few jelly filled donuts. It wasn’t that hard and if he was lucky he’d be able to steal a Panta too. He’s never once been caught and he is very proud of that.
One summer day as he carries his loot of sweets to his hole, he noticed something odd was going on. Someone was there with him. Kokichi practically dropped his treats in surprise! There was a boy a bit older than him with red hair that draped over his eyes, a small girl with brown hair who looked terrified and holding onto an older girl, and the older girl herself looking around Kokichi’s age with long black hair in ponytails and crimson red eyes. She was the only one not looking scared in this situation, her eyes glued to the boy in front of her as if she would attack any second.
Kokichi tries his best not to look scared, but does try to intimidate them the best the six-year-old could.
“Who the ever-loving hell are you?”
He’s heard a few grown-ups use this phase outside him hiding place. It seemed to get the job done with them into scaring the other person. Well while it did intimidate the little girl who began to sob loudly, the other two didn’t seem to be intimidated in the slightest, the red eyed girl becoming more enraged.
“If you do anything to us I swear I’ll-”
“Maki, I’ll take care of this, calm down.”
“Goro stand down, he’s already scaring Hanako.”
“WAAAAHHHH!!!”
The odd scenario going on before Kokichi both baffled and amused him just the same. He hasn’t seen any kids before nor has he played with anyone before. Or maybe he has? Unfortunately as much as he tried to prevent it his memories while his parents were still alive kept coming back fuzzy as if they were going to be forgotten entirely. It would be nice to have some company in this lonely little building. However you can never be too sure.
“Hey I know you’re probably wondering what we’re doing here, kid. I don’t blame you. This was your hole after all.” The older boy, apparently named Goro mutters with a timid laugh. He didn’t want a fight to break out it seems. “But we need your help. You see, some bad people are looking for us and we really need a place to hide. We won’t be much trouble I promise.” The red eyed girl scoffed at Goro’s plea but continued petting and comforting the child in front of her who was sniffling hysterically. Confused but intrigued, Kokichi poked his head out the hole looking around. There seemed to be a group of adults each carrying firearms. That didn’t look good.
“Fine fine, just keep her voice down! There’s guys everywhere out there.”
His loud shout only made Hanako cry more. “You idiot. That’s no way to comfort a child.” hissed Maki as she holds the girl close. “There there...don’t cry...I won’t let anything happen to you...” Kokichi, for some odd reason, felt a warm feeling hearing those words as if he heard them before...somewhere. Hanako seemed to calm down at least. This Maki girl was really great with kids.
“I heard something this way! Come on!” booms a man voice outside walking into the alley. Oh no! Did he hear them? And they are coming this way! Kokichi was able to keep a low profile for so long! Why now of all times and places should he be discovered! Thinking quickly Kokichi started to bark orders.
“You, take the kid behind that sink over there and lay low, kid, don’t worry, I got this under control. And you, big red over here, sit in that darkened corner by the kitchen and stay completely still.”
The children had no other choice but to listen, following Kokichi’s words exactly. The boy himself climbed up on a shelf above the hole holding a wooden bat in his hand. Yes it was the same hateful bat that that horrible gang member used to kill his father with, but it could still be used for protection. Though Kokichi would never kill anyone and would only knock out the man if he even tried getting in. Outside it would seem that the hole was spotted by one of the men. He leans down to look inside, flashing his flashlight around. All he could really see was a bag of what seemed to be donuts on the ground. Did an animal hide them away here for safe keeping? Defeated, the man gets back onto his feet. “False alarm. Must be a rat or something...” Kokichi gives a sigh of relief to himself and wipes the sweat from his brow while listening to the footsteps get further and further away. “Okay, he’s gone now, it’s safe.”
The three other children come out of their hiding places like fawn staring out for their mother to give them the go ahead to move. They all sat down in front of the purpleish blue haired boy as they gave sighs of relief.
“Wow mister! You’re really good at being a leader!” Hanako states with a smile. Maki didn’t want to admit it, especially from how loud and brash this kid was, but she’d admit this kid saved their skin and she was grateful. Goro nodded in agreement with the little girl. “Yeah, you really saved our butts back there, thank you. Maki why don’t you say thanks too?” Maki was quiet, her gaze to the ground, before she finally gives in and rolls her eyes. “...thanks I guess.” The orphan boy blushed from the compliments and the thanks, but pretended it meant nothing. “Yeah yeah yeah, I know I’m like...an ultimate leader and all that.” The red headed boy laughs a bit at the younger’s cockiness before speaking again. “Anyway why don’t we introduce ourselves? I’m Goro Harukawa and this is my little sister Maki.” Maki didn’t even bother to look at anyone, only cradling Hanako softly. “And I’m Hanako!” Says the smallest as she waves her hand in the air. “Hanako was a baby when we found her so we just...ya know...took care of her. Could you believe someone would leave this cutie on a doorstep?”
Kokichi stares at the others with an eyebrow raised. “So if you’re brother and sister what happened to your parents?” Goro’s eyes started to look a bit sadder but continued to smile as Maki grunts and turns away much to the confusion of the young Hanako. “Well our...mother died when Maki was born so...well our father had three sons before me who had grown up or got sent to a boarding school, and he usually had mother by his side so...well...he...”
Maki was looking more and more uncomfortable at what her brother was saying.
“He was already angry at Maki for being born and was...punching her whenever he got mad or would punch me for defending her. So when he saw a defenseless baby Hanako outside he...well he tried to kill her. That was until Maki stabbed him in the back of the neck.”
“He would have killed us! Father’s temper was horrible, you know that! Don’t paint me out to be some sort of horrible murderer!” Maki snapped, her eyes filling with hate. It was enough to even scare Kokichi who glanced back at Goro like he was saying “he said it not me”. Goro stares down at the ground, sweat pouring down his face. “I-I didn’t mean it like that. I was only explaining-”
“Actually,” Kokichi started, a blank stare on his face devoid of emotion. “You’re still a murderer if you had good intentions or not. You still took a life. You’re a murderer.” Goro’s eyes turned as big as dinner plates, Hanako stares confused, and Maki...oh man Maki...was on fire with rage right now. She reeled her fist back before socking Kokichi right in the jaw, his head moving back from the blow. “You don’t know shit about what I am. You don’t know ANYTHING about me. So don’t keep talking out of your ass or else you might be the next one hurt.”
“M-Maki!? What the hell?! I know that was uncalled for but-” Before Goro could finish his sentence Maki was already up the stairs, going who knows where. Kokichi gets back up, rubbing the side of his face that hurt. “You bitch! You’re not the only one who can fight ya know!” Kokichi picked up his bat and tried to run right for her but was stopped by Goro who practically held the boy in the air by the collar of his shirt. Kokichi made a whining sound before Goro put him down again. “Look, maybe you should just...leave her alone for a bit. This whole thing hurts her very much. Heck it even hurts me and Hana.” The boy looked up at the taller boy, skeptical.
“Didn’t you say your dad was an abusive douchebag?”
Goro’s eyes start to water as he looks down. “...he didn’t used to be...he used to be a kid father until mom died...” The lump forming in his throat made it hard to talk, he holds onto Hanako close who was nestled beside him. “I thought...if we waited a bit longer he would go back to the way he used to be...that’s what I told Maki...we just...had to wait and he’d be loving and sweet again...” Goro was shaking as tears went down his eyes. “It kept us going and made Maki happy but...he wasn’t ever coming back.” Now Kokichi felt like a total ass for what he said. They had that little bit of hope from a lie, just like how he had hope from his own lie that his parents weren’t dead. The boy himself shook as well, his eyes peering to the ground as his body trembles. “I thought lying to myself would make me happy but...this makes it much worse. I’m sorry...”
Goro feels a bit better and pats Kokichi’s head. “It isn't your fault. I mean if someone came into my house saying they killed their father I’d be pretty freaked out too. I’d probably call the police.” He giggles a little before putting on a comforting smile.
“But sometimes you care about someone too much to let them suffer in lies. You have to do something or someone will get hurt.”
Kokichi was silent, taking the older boy’s words to heart. Even if lies do make you feel better, there were some that makes you feel better for a little while then hurt you in the long run. But what kind of lies are they? How could he tell the difference? Suddenly his thoughts were interrupted by his growling stomach. That’s right, he didn’t get a chance to eat his stolen donuts yet. He quickly picked up the bag and starts chowing down. Given he was so young when his parents had passed on, he didn’t really have manners or the idea to share. Well, until both Goro and Hanako stared at him sadly as their own stomachs rumbled.
“Y-You want some?”
The three of them ate as much as they could and there was still some left over for Maki. They each told each other stories of their pasts and dreams they had until Goro and Hanako fell asleep on a full stomach and cuddled up next to each other on a pillow. Kokichi couldn’t sleep now feeling guilt he made Maki hurt. But it wasn’t a lie, that was the truth! Anyone who kills another human being is a murderer! Was it better if he lied about that too? Well he didn’t want the donuts to go bad or stale so he went up the stairs. The most beautiful thing about this building was the way it would go up to the roof, it would show the most scenic spots of Tokyo. Kokichi didn’t think that’s why his mom hid him in that spot, in fact she probably didn’t know it existed, but he was grateful nonetheless. If only father and mother could see these beautiful sights...perhaps someday...maybe...
As he reached the roof he could see Maki sitting alone. She stares at the busy roads and cars below her, hearing the hustle and bustle of the city. Timidly Kokichi sat on the other side of her also looking down at the ground. She didn’t seem to notice, and even if she did she gave no response. This lasted for a few minutes, only the sounds of the city bellow. Kokichi couldn’t stand the awkward silence anymore before he holds out the bag of treats to her. “Here, we saved you some.” Maki eyed the bag of treats for a second as if she was checking if they were safe or not before sighing and taking the bag. She cautiously took a bite of a cherry jelly filled donut, then took another, and another. Damn these things were good. She ate it pretty fast which made Kokichi giggle a bit before Maki gives one of those infamous stares in which he holds up his hands defensively. Maki seemed to have eaten the rest of the donuts in one sitting before taking the empty paper bag and handing it back to him. “Thanks. It was...oddly tasty...”
“Ah so you do like it? They make the best damn donuts anywhere!”
“I’d appreciate it if you would stop cussing in front of Hana.”
There was a stillness in the night, awkward silence in the air. Finally Kokichi just decided to say it.
“Hey, I really am sorry for hurting you. I shouldn’t have said that...” His hair swayed in the wind as a gust came from the east. “I’m an orphan too. My mom and dad died when I was three. Three gang guys killed them. I...I was too young to do anything so I...hid in that building. I’ve been living on my own ever since...”
Maki looked over at him carefully, her eyes still narrow but at least a bit softer now feeling sympathy for the brash loud child. She then turns back to the city and smiles a little. “It’s fine...honestly you got it worse than me. I at least have my brother and sister. You have...no one. I’m sorry...”
“About what? You weren’t those three guys.” Kokichi states as he kicks his legs over the building’s ledge. But now that he thinks of it...he really was alone. He was too busy trying to survive to notice it but...it hurt. “H-Hey...” Maki started, her eyes still on the city streets. “You don’t have to be alone you know. We wouldn’t mind keeping you company. Like an extended family or...something...” Maki seemed bashful saying this but she meant it. He did help her and her siblings out after all. Kokichi turns to the girl, giving the first genuine smile he had in a long time. “If you all want to you’re welcome to stay. Us orphans have to stick together, right?”
Suddenly he stood up quickly onto the edge of the building, almost looking like he’s about to fall but catches himself pretty quickly with cat-like reflexes.
“We should start our own orphan gang!”
Maki stares at him worriedly like he was about to fall but calmed down once she noticed he wasn’t going anywhere. “An orphan gang? That does sound fun. Just the four of us, huh?” Kokichi nods his head enthusiastically as he stares back into the girl’s red eyes. “Then we need a leader. How about you? You managed to direct us without getting caught. That was very leader-like. Even Goro would’ve froze up in that situation.”
Now this caught him off guard as Kokichi almost fell forward but moved his weight backwards so he fell on his butt onto the roof’s concrete.
“M-Me?!”
“Yes you. ‘Ultimate Leader’.”
Kokichi crosses his legs, his head down in deep thought. “W-Well...I guess. Mom used to say my dad was a leader in his gang so...”
“Then I guess you have your dad’s genes.”
“No? My dad’s jeans would be too big for me.”
Maki looks at him down founded for a second, then shook her head. “Never mind. Anyway what should the gang be called?” Kokichi thinks for a few minutes, his eyes glancing everywhere to find a name out of anything. His eyes wondered to Maki’s hairbands that held up her pigtails. They almost looked like playing die. He then nods his head again, even more enthusiastic than before.
“We’ll call it DICE!”
Maki really had to get used to this kid’s sudden outbursts. “What does it stand for?” Kokichi blinks. “Stand for?”
“N-Never mind...” She smiles a little. This dude was an idiot, but a funny idiot.
Kokichi glances over to Maki noticing her smile for the first time. “Heeey you’re smiling!” Maki looked shocked but then sighs defeated. Damn this kid’s observation skills. “All right, you got me ultimate leader.”
“You’re very pretty when you smile!”
Oh no! Here comes the blush! She stares at him for a moment, her cheeks cherry red. Kokichi noticing this quickly tries to think of a way to fix his friend’s red face.
“S-Stop lying!”
“Nyhehehe! Okay. I’m lying. You got vampire eyes. Are you a vampire?”
Her red face became red for another reason, anger.
“I’m gonna kick your ass!”
Kokichi peeks up from the door to the stairs. “I thought we weren’t cussing in front of Hanako?” Seeing Maki run forward he quickly paniced and closed the door and ran down the stairs.
“SHE’S NOT HERE RIGHT NOW! KOKICHI!!!!”

Birth Of a Liar Part Five
||Part One||Part Two||Part Three||Part Four||Part Five||
Final part, might make an epilogue too. Will contain spoilers. Also second best boy is in this, guess who it is (it’s Kiibo)
Trigger Warnings: Implied Torture, memory manipulation.
Darkness... ...quiet cold darkness. Kokichi had no idea where he was or what he was even doing here in the first place. First those weird grey guys capture him, then put him to sleep, and now he was just in and out of consciousness, only hearing faint sounds of voices around him.
“All systems go, checking the reaction to physical stimuli...”
He feels a slight pinch in his leg making him twitch what he believed to be his foot. There were sounds of someone writing something with a pen on a piece of paper before three beeps. “Left leg is a success. Now try left arm, raise the pain stimuli a little.” Whoever it was raising the stimuli or whatever must have raised it too high since it felt like his arm was on fire! He yelped and screamed, opening his eyes to total darkness while still hearing whoever that was with the pen scribbling down more things.
“Pain stimuli a success. Going to right leg now...”
Whatever the hell “stimuli” meant he didn’t like it. He felt real hot out of no where, then real cold, then really comfortable to really uncomfortable, it was not a fun experience. He could even hear himself screaming! It was a nightmare! Maybe he’ll wake up from it soon...
The sounds slowly faded away and now it was only back to darkness. He could feel something cold and metal as he leaned back. Was he standing? Wait...he could move again and his body felt completely fine even after the whole stimuli thing. Kokichi leaned forward a little bit to feel even more cold steel in front of him, only this time he could see a few bars of light in front of him. Freedom? With all his weight he rammed forward on the steel only to fall forward and end up on the grassy ground. At least there was light now...was he outside? This was definitely grass he fell in. Upon closer inspection it turned out it was...the inside of an abandoned school?
Being the inquisitive teen he was, Kokichi got up and started looking around for a way out and some sort of weapon for protection. Man if only he had his bat then no one would even be able to come near him. Though still he wasn’t going to kill them but...he didn’t want to be killed himself! Maybe he could knock them out then run away? That’s when he saw another locker. It seemed to still be closed but if the locker he was in was so easy to open then this one must be too. Perhaps there was something in here he could use to knock someone out with if they threaten him. Kokichi wiggled the handle a few times trying to open it. A metallic squeak and a sudden bang was heard. Good news: he opened the locker. Bad news: there was something pushing on the other side! Curse having such a small body! Whatever it was had opened the locker door entirely before landing on him, causing Kokichi to lose the air out of his lungs like a deflated balloon.
What the hell did they put in this locker? A steamroller? However as he opens his eyes and finally processes the figure on top of him, it was human shaped. In fact it was very human shaped. Pale skin, silvery shiny white hair, a hat placed atop it’s head, and what seemed to be really a normal school uniform. Though shoot was he heavy! And he was so skinny too! How??
Soon enough the being’s blue eyes began to...glow? Wait a moment...was this guy even a human? Whatever he was he finally noticed Kokichi and BEGAN SCREAMING! This also startled the leader who scoots backwards and tries to hide back in the locker. There was a reason he was so heavy! He was a killer robot!
The robot blinked for a few moments and looks around the room slowly, catching his breath. Wait could robots even breathe? Finally his shiny blue eyes meet with Kokichi’s frightened ones. He gives a relieved sigh.
“You’re a high school student exactly like me, correct?” The robot finally asks giving a friendly smile. Kokichi just nods. Just give the robot what he wanted and maybe he will let you out of this place. Standing up suddenly, the other walked up to the cowering boy and offered a hand. “There is no need to be afraid. I was captured as well.” Kokichi just examines the hand in front of him hesitantly. They apparently wore gloves as well. Maybe it wasn’t warranted, and maybe it was a bit rude, but instead of his hand, he takes off the glove to inspect underneath. Wires, metal, screws and bolts. That means he really was-
“R-R-ROBOT!” the teen exclaims as he tries his best to hide back in the locker again. All the robot did was shush him angrily and look around. “Shh! Not so loud please! And do not touch my glove without permission!” The robot lectures placing the glove back on his robot arm. His angered features get a bit softer as if he was empathizing with the scared boy. “Anyway, since we have both ended up in the same situation, the best course of action would be for us to stick together. My name is K1-b0. But please, call me Kiibo. I am indeed a robot but I was created to learn and act like a human. I want to keep my true identity a secret so I can fit in a bit more with others.”
That sounded like something out of a cartoon...a robot going to school with humans to learn how to be like them. However Kiibo didn’t seem like an evil robot so maybe he should trust him? Actually now that he thought about it, having a robot best friend would be the coolest thing ever! Kokichi would steal movies about robots or watch anime about fighting robots all the time. They were so cool! For a second or two you could almost see the sparks of excitement and the glittering of Kokichi’s eyes. He had so much to ask him!
Without even taking his hand Kokichi instead moves in front of Kiibo’s face, his hands in front of him excitedly. “That’s so cool! I always wanted to meet a robot! Hey, I got a few questions if you don’t mind? Do robots sleep? Do robots eat? Do they go to the bathroom? Do they have d-”
KABOOM! In came a gigantic robotic creature! Well it wouldn’t be so bad if it was a robot like Kiibo but this thing looked like something out of Star Wars! The boys stare at it in horror before Kiibo quickly took a hold of Kokichi’s hand. “Hurry! We have to run!”
He didn’t have to tell him twice! He’s dashing right behind the robot, doing his best to outrun whatever it was that was on their trail. But wait...Kiibo’s a robot, right?
“Why don’t you use your rocket powered jet-pack feet and shoot it in the head with your lazer?” Kokichi questioned between breaths. The robot looks a bit embarassed and turns away. “I don’t have those...but I will protect you to the best of my ability.” Kokichi looks shocked and appalled by this revelation, his nose turning up slightly in disgust. “Who creates a robot and makes them not able to figh-EEK!” The gigantic metal machine had almost stepped on him if it wasn’t for Kiibo slightly pulling Kokichi’s arm to make him lean forward. Okay, that was a pretty good trick. “You were saying...?”
The hallway to this school was like a maze! It was as if they were going around in circles! At the end of one hallway there seemed to be a large door that could lead to a gymnasium or something along those lines. Kokichi pulls forward this time leading them to the place. Oddly enough Kiibo wasn’t so heavy to pull than he was to pick up off of you. Upon reaching the safe zone the boys closed the door behind them before collapsing onto the polished wooden floor. It took them a minute to catch their breath but once they finally did they began laughing. That was a close one but...it was rather fun! It reminded Kokichi of his DICE days.
“Oh that’s right. I didn’t ask you what your name was. I apologize.” Kiibo states with a polite bow. For a robot he could move as swiftly as a human could. That was really impressive. “May I ask who you are?”
Honestly he didn’t know whether to be honest with the robot or not, but he did save his life from being a pancake so he did owe him at least that much. “Uh...Kokichi Ouma...of Tokyo Japan.” Kiibo’s eyes widened for a moment. “My databases say that you had disappeared for years and somehow ended up running your own orphanage! That is very humble and amazing of you. You must be a very good person.” Oh man, that was too many compliments in one sentence. His face got flushed immediately.
“It wasn’t just an orphanage, it was an evil organization! We caused trouble and stole things, and once held the mayor hostage for ransom money!” He didn’t like his organization being known as some sort of orphanage, it was a lot more cooler to call it an evil organization...just like Maki once said. “Oh. My mistake.” Kiibo apologies again softly. Though as Kokichi looked up, his eyes met a dark haired girl with red eyes and her hair pulled into pigtails that ran down her back. It couldn’t be... “Maki?”
She was a lot older than when they last met but this girl was indeed Maki. “Hold on, Kiiboy I’ll be right back.” He tries to say hello to her before she looks away. She didn’t want to even look at him. “Maki come on, we haven’t seen each other for years and you’ve already forgotten me?”
She says nothing, just glancing at the wooden floor. “I haven’t forgotten about you, Kokichi...” Maki replies in a dull voice. “Then why won’t you talk to me?”
Finally Maki turns around, tears starting to form slowly. “Because I want nothing to do with you anymore...because of your stupid idea, my brothers found me and brought me and Goro back home! People know me as a murderer there, I can’t even get one friend!” Kokichi looks sadly at her, starting to feel guilt. “But what about Hana? Is she okay?” Maki’s tears began to roll down her face. “She’s in an orphanage. I want to adopt her but I’m too young and Goro’s in collage and is already knee deep in debt! That’s why I signed up for Daganronpa! I could use the money to bring Hanako back!” Kokichi looks to the ground for a moment in sadness. He didn’t want Hanako to get taken...he didn’t want Maki and Goro to go back to that family. They were a family. They were DICE! They were supposed to stick together through thick and thin.
“I’m already known as a murderer so...even if I kill it won’t make a difference.” Those words hit Kokichi like a bow’s arrow to the chest. “But DICE doesn’t kill-”
“I’m not a part of your stupid club anymore, Kokichi. You don’t think out plans, you just boss people around and hope they listen to you. You need to stop only thinking of the end result and instead of what the consequences are. You can do as you wish but leave me out of it...”
“Hey is this guy bothering you?” A tall guy with pinkish purple hair asked Maki, coming out of nowhere and cracking his knuckles. Maki looks back at Kokichi for a second before turning back to the man. “No. I was just leaving.” Kokichi watched sadly as the two went to another part of the gymnasium, the tall guy comforting Maki softly. She was right...it was all his fault...all his fault that DICE is split up...all his fault that they were forced into orphanages, all his fault Maki couldn’t see Hanako anymore. He could already fill the tears well up in his eyes. Suddenly a gloved hand had touched Kokichi’s shoulder making him jump a bit. “Was that the human ritual that they call a ‘brake-up’? My databases say that’s very hard for a human heart. I offer my greatest sympathies.” He doesn’t say anything for a second before he glares at Maki angrily. “As if I’d ever be with a vampire looking murder girl.”
“I-Is...that a yes or a no?”
Robots apparently don’t understand sarcasm.
Soon enough more people had found there way into this gym. He didn’t have time to introduce himself to them and honestly? The guilt and the worry of everything happening at once made him feel uneasy. Right now he’d rather be in that dark place he was with the stimuli than here. Soon the last two had come in, a girl and boy, before more shaking and rattling. He hated it here...but he was still a leader. Maybe he could find a way out of here with everyone in tow.
Apparently those giant robots were piloted by these odd little bear cub things, each with a different voice and personality. They also confirmed his suspicion. He was chosen for the games after all. A wave of fear had hit him but he tries not to show it. If he was in the killing game he was going to make sure everyone gets out alive no matter what. Soon they threw some close everywhere and told everyone to get changed. Kokichi blushes a tiny bit. Get undressed? In front of all these girls? And then THEY’D get undressed in front of him? Not for a perverted reason, but he looks around to see if everyone else was going to a dressing room or something. Oddly...they weren’t. The girl that came in last was in the sky getting a Sailor Moon styled transformation sequence, Kiibo had this weird Voltron like sequence, and that girl with the red hair that doesn’t even look like a high schooler had this sort of Tokyo Mew Mew vibe. Don’t ask him how he knows so much, he DID watch anime with the others in DICE you know.
So he cautiously walks to the only clothes left, a white suit with mixed matched buttons and a checkered scarf complete with boots. He had to admit, it was his style. In fact it suited him to a tee. It even matched with DICE too. Holding out a hand to pick it up, he was suddenly engulfed by a purple light. Fair organ music filled his ears as he watches himself get dressed without even moving a single finger. It was odd...he felt like a character in a video game when you change their look and they automatically look that way without doing a thing. He lands perfectly on his feet, everyone looking different than they did before. And now that bear said they were going to give their ultimates? What did that mean? Oooh like in the show when the characters have tale-
Suddenly light had flashed in his eyes! His brain felt dizzy, his stomach feeling woozy.
Whatever happens you will NOT kill! Whatever happens you will NOT kill! Whatever happens you will NOT kill!
The light continued to shine, he could feel everything he knows in his life flashing before his eyes, like a PowerPoint of every single thing he’s ever experienced. It hurt for a second, until he was engulfed in darkness once again. What on earth happened? This wasn’t...right? Well one thing is for sure he might as well try to think of who he is...
.... ................... ...................................................... ..................................................................
My name is Kokichi Ouma, the ultimate supreme leader! I lead an evil organization of ten...no...over a thousand people! And it’s known throughout the world! I’m also a liar. .... ................... ...................................................... .................................................................. And no MATTER WHAT, I will not kill a soul.
