Inu-Mothership Spotlight Saturday Update: July 27, 2024: KogKag!

Hi everyone! We here at @inu-mothership are back with a new round of fic recs! Our server has just celebrated its third anniversary this week, and to honor that, we'll be revisiting some of the ships that we featured very early on in our Spotlight Saturday days. This week, we're going back to our very first fic rec list, which was KogKag!

This week, we're back with 15 new fics, all published after our last KogKag list, which was a summary of the 2022 KogKag Secret Admirer event! Stories are listed below the cut in alphabetical order, according to title, with rating and status (ongoing or complete) also noted. We hope you find some new KogKag gems in this list!

The Beauty of Storms (G; complete) by abovetheruins (Ao3)

Outside, thunder rumbled. A flash of lightning illuminated the sky, throwing the tree trunks beyond the cave into sharp relief. Kagome’s breath caught at the brilliant display, though she was distracted from the storm by the faintest whisper of footsteps beyond the cave. Within her next heartbeat, the wall of water bearing down upon the entrance parted as a shadowed figure pushed their way through.

Caught in the middle of a rainstorm, the Inu gang take refuge with the wolf clan. Kouga and Kagome share a moment.

Chasing Fate (M; complete) by @fawn-eyed-girl

Yōkai exterminators Kagome and Miroku are called to investigate the mysterious possessions and murders that have been happening on the late night Musashi train line. When confronted with the culprit, Kagome is surprised to see not one, but two faces from her past…

The one who broke her heart. And the one whose heart she broke.

Can she put the past aside to solve this case? And perhaps also reunite with the ookami who still owns her heart, even after she let him go?

Kouga has been courting Kagome for years now, but she is clueless. One day, he had the perfect excuse to complete all the courting traditions he knows of but they aren't enough. What does she need?

It's been several years since the defeat of Naraku and supposed destruction of the Sacred Jewel. Stuck in the past, Kagome has been trying to adjust to the tedious life of a village miko while harboring a dangerous secret. With the emergence of a deadly illness sweeping through Edo, Kagome is tasked with helping Kouga save his pack. The only problem is that Kouga is determined to use this opportunity to not only save his tribe, but to convince Kagome to be his. Drawn to the powerful wolf demon, Kagome must learn to walk the fine line between following her heart and staying duty bound to protect those she loves.

A chance encounter in a dark park with a stranger who saves her.

When Kagome injures herself, Kouga takes her home. After learning that her injury will prevent her from helping at her family’s shrine, he volunteers to help out.

Add in a creepy stalker and a big secret for some extra flavor!

Unexpectedly stuck in a storm together after time apart forces Kagome and Koga to address the elephant in the room.

Koga lived centuries as the Pack's bachelor alpha. It's fine, really. It doesn't bother him anymore. He embraced the lifestyle. Little does he know the Tanabata festival has a surprise in store.

The autumn air was crisp and the full moon high in the night sky. Its light bathed the forest floor in a cool cerulean glow that cast long shadows into the underbrush. She pulled in a cleansing breath and let it out in a rush.

"Chase me," she breathed and immediately began to run.

There is a reason that the Olympic Village supplies so many condoms. Athletes need to find ways to relax and celebrate, right? When Kagome meets an absolutely gorgeous wolf demon from the French team, she decides it’s time to ‘relieve some of that post-competition tension.’ And with this much chemistry, who needs a common language?

It's unfortunate for them both that he's kind of an asshole and she's definitely not on the right side of alive.

On the cusp of burnout, Kouga takes a week-long vacation up in the mountains. His only focus is to run free as a wolf and slowly scratch the itch that had been building. The first night, he catches a scent that refuses to leave him alone, only to find that scent in the form of a female miko running a shop in town.

Which means the wolf has caught sight of the prey and he's determined to follow this hunt to the finish.

Kagome signed up for a Regency-era Ball with her best friend Kouga agreeing to come with her. Too bad it turned out to be on Valentine's weekend and Kouga has no hope of returning her feelings.

A Royal Pain in the Ass (T; complete) by @neutronstarchild 

Kagome Higurashi hates the confinement of her royal life. It is smothering, her mother and (step)father understand that, right? It’s why she was so angry when they hired a wolf demon to act as her bodyguard. Honestly, it just made the castle feel more confining. It’s why she knows all the exits from the castle. Unfortunately being good at escaping sometimes doesn’t translate into being good at blending in. And this time, the little lady was lucky that Kōga was good at his job, or she would have lost everything. Unfortunately, that did not mean they both made it out unscathed.

When Kagome wakes up from her induced sleep state aboard the S.S. Goraishi, the last thing she expects to see is Captain Kōga Kobayashi’s face, staring at her from behind the glass of her sleeping pod. Especially since…her last memories of him are of the very passionate night they spent together before she entered her sleep fugue.

And now, she’s awake, and so is he, and as they near their destination, they’re finding it hard to not pick up right where they left off.

Too bad everyone else on the ship has other ideas for how Kōga and Kagome should spend their time.

The man who raised me was going to kill a little girl because he's stupid and selfish, and because I left. It was my fault and I was so scared. I can't put any more of you in danger like that ever again."

"We've been in danger before, Kagome. I won't let anything happen to you, or them." Kouga tried to speak calmly. He knew how Kagome was feeling; it reflected his own emotions the night of the fire. The guilt choked him, and it took weeks for him to shake the feeling of being inadequate to take care of them. "You're Pack now."

“The snows will fall soon. Your camp is adequate…for now.” Kouga wagered a step closer, breathing in the perfume of her trepidation and distrust. It marred the lovely scent of her skin, citrus and pine and the rain at night. Kouga wanted to bury his face against the curve of her neck, and keep the scent in his nose forever.

“I’ll be returning to my home today. It was late. I…didn’t want to walk to my village alone.”

Kouga began circling her slowly, her scent bristling like a bird ready to take flight. “We can smell lies, you know…among other things.”

The woods between her village and the wolf den were dense, and when Kagome arrived at the base of the mountain, she hoped to find a place to sit before she began the climb. What she found were no less than four dozen wolves, all of whom turned to stare at her at the same time. She guessed, from the nostrils that flared at her arrival, that they weren't staring simply because she was a disheveled human woman, bursting through the trees with a bloody arm, in front of their home. Kagome was aware of their keen senses, and if she knew anything, they picked up the scent of her long before she arrived. 

The same scent as the men who set their dens on fire.

"...my woman… my woman…" he breathed out. His lips were barely parted, and the voice was borne of delirium; rough like the walls of their caves. Kagome would have barely heard it, but the mantra followed her home and haunted her dreams. 

Kagome's heart wept for his loss, whoever she was, and whatever circumstance made him cry out for her in his sleep. She promised herself that after he was healed, she would do whatever she could to reunite them. 

Tearing a leaf and pressing it to one of the burns on his face, Kagome smoothed away the excess medicine until he fell blissfully silent and asleep. 

“I’ll help you find her. I promise.”
