Look what I found! Cleaning my office, box full of junk, and at the bottom is my very first camera, a Kodak Tele-Instamatic. This was just before the Michael Landon commercials. As I recall it was $24–does that sound right?��I came across it walking through a Sears with my mother and grandmother—and I just had to have it. Don’t know why but I really had to have it. I only had about half of the money and I must have begged—money was very tight—and my grandmother and mom gave in a paid the rest. Life-changing as it turned out. The shutter had only two speeds (that was the first camera fact I learned) and if you put a dead flashbar into it the camera would shoot at the longer speed, thinking you were in low light with flash (trying to get better exposed backgrounds, I suppose). But with the dead flash attached you could trick the camera and shoot much better night photos. My first technique!
