TanKana Yoshiwara AU

So on this post of random Kanao thoughts I noted how Kanao was likely being sold by her family into the sex trade, and I pondered if that meant Tanjiro/Sumiko could have met her at Tokito-ya when Kanao was around the age of Furisode Shinzo (older than the Kamuro servant girls, but still an apprentice to the Oiran and did not yet take customers, see an overview of the Yoshiwara roles here). This morning I finally found myself filled with ideas for that, but I was at work and unable to write anything down, but I sure felt inspired by the images in my head! And now, 12 hours later, I can't remember the logical flow and my art abilities aren't working. Bummer, because I really wanted to see Sumiko and Kanao fluff and drama. This is just going to be thinking as I type.

So when Tanjiro arrives and quickly gains a reputation for being a strong and hard worker, the little Kamuro girls make comments like, "it's a good thing we have someone new to help now that Kanao-chan will be busy" and "wow, Sumi-chan is even stronger than Kanao-chan" and Tanjiro is intrigued, and they say how she's really good at blowing giant soap bubbles too. He's curious, and they take him to meet her, and he's struck by the sight of a very pretty Furisode Shinzo. The two little Kamuro gush about how she's already very popular and many customers are looking forward to her upcoming debut, when she graduates to becoming a Shinzo. The Okami (mistress) is coming up with a stage name for her, probably something to do with butterflies because she's already thought of as a silent butterfly full of mystique.

So anyway, the first thing of out Tanjiro's mouth is that he wants to see this bubble trick the girls were talking about. Kanao, still one to do as she's told (and is well-loved around the brothel for being so agreeable and never one to make any fuss), obliges. Tanjiro is amazed by her power and control, over an enormous bubble, and he exclaims that she would probably be a natural at Breath technique. Kanao doesn't ask what he means, but the little Kamuro do, and he blurts out how it's a technique for fighting demons. And then, thinking the better of his blunder, he runs off.

If we back up a bit, when Suma was there, there was a moment when Daki's obi slipped in meaning to get rid of Suma, but at that very moment, Kanao noticed and caught the curious thing between her fingers, causing Suma to notice and be thoroughly shocked, in full Suma style. The obi slips away, indignant and thoroughly shook about this brat having the audacity to catch her, and for the time being is too shook even have plans for Kanao. After recovering from the shock, the obi waits until Suma is alone to snatch her once and for all. Suma was in the process of writing a letter saying, 'TENGEN-SAMA, THIS GIRL IS AMAZING, SHE CAUGHT THE DEMON WITH HER BARE FINGERS' but the obi demolished that letter.

Naturally, Kanao doesn't say anything about the incident, for no one asks her and she doesn't take do anything unless she's told to. However, she is observant and has a good idea that whatever that obi was, it had it out for Suma-oiran.

In this AU, Koinatsu-oiran takes the role the Kocho Sisters did. Kanao was originally one of her Kamuro, and she was always especially concerned about her because of her near catatonic state. It was Koinatsu who coaxed her into coping mechanisms in addition to usual Kamuro training. She continues to take special care of Kanao as she graduated into a Furisode Shinzo, and because of Kanao's popularity among customers already, everyone expects her to become the next big Oiran after Koinatsu. With Koinatsu soon leaving Yoshiwara, she feels sympathy for the future Kanao has ahead of her.

One morning, Tanjiro is doing chores and finds Kanao sitting on the roof outside the window and he pops he head out and strikes up a conversation. She's sort of bewildered by all his questions. "What are you doing? Are you sunbathing? Is this where you come when you have free time?" and then it devolves into him saying how admirable it is that she's working hard for her family, but isn't it hard? And she responds with out it's all whatever to her, she doesn't care. She doesn't care whether her family gets money or not. She doesn't care what happens to her. She just has to do what she's told. Tanjiro reads this as Kanao trying to shield her own heart from her upcoming work, and he insists that even if it's too hard to run away from this place which has been her home, she should always listen to the voice in her heart.

So anyway. I forgot how I made the timing made sense when I was thinking about this earlier, so just skip around with me. Weeeee, skip, skip, skip we go, down the lanes of Yoshiwara.

So. Daki's obi, still shook by Kanao, nonetheless stays curious about her with a mental side note to kill her eventually in revenge for that slight, but she's pretty so might as well let her grow up a bit more before eating her. Priority is Koinatsu, whom she's waited on a long time.

Kanao is getting ready for her debut as a Shinzo (a woman who takes customers), and Koinatsu is distraught about leaving at such an important time for Kanao. She gifts her with a butterfly hairpin, saying, "This is my gift to you, Kanao-chan. May it protect you. Take care of yourself."

Kanao, doing what she is told, t-o-t-a-l-l-y misconstrues this as Koinatsu desperately advising her to use that hairpin to protect herself. Kanao's good and experienced as not getting hit in a bad spot, after all, so she matter-of-factly uses the hairpin to stab the hand of her first customer.

A huge commotion ensues. The customer is screaming, Tanjiro (expecting a demon) comes running only be the first one on the scene, and then the Okami and other people who work there arrive, the customer is threatening to shut down the whole establishment, everyone is yelling, Tanjiro stands in Kanao's defense (this wasn't exactly what he had in mind when he advised her to follow her heart, but he's taking responsibility for that lose-tongued advice now), and although Tanjiro insists she smells remorseful, someone shouts how she's not shedding a single tear of remorse. She is sweating buckets, though. Koinatsu also appears at the commotion and is horrified at what has happened (or Koinatsu doesn't witness this, I was undecided). Anyway, that was the moment Kanao knew she f'ed up.

Daki's obi, meanwhile, has witnessed this and is very impressed, in an amused sort of way (but can't quite place this sense of dejavu...). That girl's an interesting one! But now this means she's bound to get thrown out to the Kirimise (lowest slums on the borders of Yoshiwara), which will just make her grow up to be too gross to feed on later, so the obi/Daki decides to snatch Kanao while she's got the chance once everything settles and Kanao is locked up in her own room by herself. There will be time after eating Koinatsu, after all.

So anyway, at some point while Tanjiro is busy with Koinatsu, an obi comes for Kanao, and Kanao does protect herself in earnest with the hairpin by stabbing many layers at once to the tatami and holding it there with all her might, even though she has no idea what's going on and can only think back to Tanjiro's offhand reference to demons. Tanjiro to the rescue! It would be nice if this is her first time seeing Tanjiro as a Demon Slayer. Tanjiro slices through them easily with Kanao having barely kept them under control, and she tells him Koinatsu is in danger because the talking obi was saying it planned to eat her, which must be what it did to Suma-oiran too. Tanjiro tells Kanao to leave Koinatsu to him and to keep herself from getting eaten, as he recognizes her innate ability to hold her own against a demon, but to be on the safe side he leaves Nezuko there and asks her to help keep Kanao safe. Yep, this is Kanao's first time to see Nezuko, too.

So anyway, Yoshiwara goes to pieces, maybe Kanao makes another appearance or two somewhere, but most significantly, at the very end of the fight, when Tengen stabs Gyutaro's belly and Tanjiro comes swooping in overhead to deliver the final Hinokami Kagura blow to the neck, Gyutaro was about to lift his poison sickle up through Tanjiro's chin, right? Nope, this is where Kanao makes a very proactive decision to enter the fight and grab Gyutaro's arm with all her might, thereby preventing Tanjiro from getting poisoned, and putting her right in the middle of the action as Gyutaro's head gets chopped. She's gets by okay in the explosion afterward, because she's good at not getting hit in a bad spot, and she's got innate skills that make her physically good at getting away and stuff. She just is, okay.

So anyway, in the aftermath, Tanjiro is in bad, bad shape, but he's not as bad as he would had been if he were poisoned and stabbed (because I feel like letting him be conscious, that's why). When everyone else is accounted for, he finds Kanao, herself a wreck among the wreckage, and he asks her what she wants to do, implying that he's offering her the choice to 'ashinuke' her way away from Yoshiwara with this as her chance. She says she wants to slay demons like Sumiko does. Tanjiro knows she'll be good at it, but he's happiest that she gets to leave the Yoshiwara life behind and that she's speaking from her heart.

So anyway. He takes her home to the Butterfly Mansion, telling her how nice Shinobu is and how Kanao will feel right at home with all the girls for company, and how they all have butterfly hairpins like her, too! Shinobu is surprised but agrees to take her in (what room does she have to say no, really), and Kanao wants to make friends with everyone but is very shy and prefers to stay with Sumiko. Tanjiro has corrected her, and she has to catch herself and force herself to call him Tanjiro, it's very difficult at first, but he's patient and encouraging. Nezuko does her best to encourage Kanao in her foreign new surroundings too.

Zenitsu flips out. Grabs a fistful of Tanjiro's hair and shakes him around as he screams at him for going to Yoshiwara just to catch himself a girl. Horrendous. Awful. What excuse does he even have for himself as a Demon Slayer Corp member? While Zenitsu was off taking that whole mission seriously Tanjiro was only there to flirt and use his Corp Salary to purchase a girl? U-N-F-O-R-G-I-V-A-B-L-E.

So anyway. It's just as Kanao is beginning to settle in that Tengen comes hobbling in to collect his new student, as being a Cultivator is his new calling in retirement. Shinobu is stunned, and asks what student. That one, the girl who saved his Tsuguko, he says. What Tsuguko, asks Shinobu. Those three, answers Tengen. Since when, she presses. Since he was a Pillar, he states. And besides, that girl said she wanted to fight demons, he heard her. Shinobu says alright, then she'll train her, as she heard these wishes too and has already started on refining Kanao's preexisting inclination toward Breath technique. Tengen says no, he'll take that one off Shinobu's hands. It's not as if Shinobu has time for cultivating anyone. Besides, he was really impressed by that girl's speed and bravado at a really flamboyant moment. Shinobu says she's too quiet to be suited for Sound Breath, and besides, she'll be more comfortable in the company of girls. Um, hello, responds Tengen, gesturing to his three wives. Suma told him all about Kanao already and really wants her. Although Kanao does go on to learn Flower Breath with Shinobu's support as a master, Kanao becomes most emotionally attached to Tanjiro, who is continually coaxing her to figure out what she wants and likes, and this leads to fun meals with everyone trying to get Kanao to like their own favorite food most (especially Inosuke), but Kanao is put on the spot and really cannot decide for she really, truly likes everything Aoi makes. Aoi has been struck with a mother hen instinct to take Kanao under her wing ever since.

With Tanjiro's help, Kanao is able to exchange letters with Koinatsu, leaving her assured that Kanao will be alright, both physically and emotionally, even if she is on her way to something so dangerous as fighting demons.

The Uzui-Kocho custody battle is ongoing, but otherwise, The End.

Hello all, this is gonna be long. When I get into something I tend to drop canon and play around in the world's background so none of these have much to do with actual canon characters. I won't go into detailed story specifics to save a little space.

Part 1: Sengoku era (ages listed as of 1600)

Nanbu Kisuke (南部 喜介) - 1548-[???] - 52

no canon image

Took in Genba, Raisho, and Ujizane over the years as apprentices when their families were killed. Taught them swordsmanship and how to kill demons, basic first aid, etc. Refuses to acknowledge them as sons but fulfills the role of adoptive father nonetheless.

Fiercely anti-samurai; disgraced former member of the Nanbu clan. Ronin in an age where that was almost as dangerous as demon hunting. “No gods, no masters, just me and this sword I found” type of guy.

Disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1593. Later reappeared as a demon, leading his students to swear an oath to kill him.

Toumomi Raisho  (友美 来章) - 1569-1600 - 31

(first one's mine, 2nd one's a comm from @azreto who i highly recommend)

Hair: silver, Eyes: gold, Scars: parallel dimple scars, Height: 5'11 (180 cm)

Orphaned twice. His family were unlucky silk producers; his facial scars are from a skirmish they fled when he was a toddler. As a boy, his parents were killed in a bandit raid, and he was taken in by his sister and her husband. In his early adolescence, his sister's family was killed by a demon, and he was taken in by Kisuke.

Killed in 1600 by Utsubyou.

Clever and mischievous, artistic and charismatic. Finds great amusement in getting reactions out of people. He likes things that flow, monsoons, and colors. He also likes experimenting with clothing, but that tends to be a luxury he doesn't have access to.

Myo-o Ujizane (明王 氏真) - 1571-[???] - 29

(both mine)

Hair: black, Eyes: black/red, Scars: shoulder, back, legs, Demon crest: facial spiral, Height: 6' (183 cm)

Only son of a family of bamboo cutters. He was attacked by a demon on his way home from marking out a grove and barely escaped with his life, however, when he got home, the demon had already slaughtered his family, and been killed by Kisuke. Kisuke took him to his home for Raisho and Genba to treat his injuries, and then returned to bury Uji's family. Yue, his closest friend, arrived at the graves and presumed him dead; they didn't reunite until their early 20s.

A devout Buddhist. He and Raisho & Genba chose their own surnames at age 15 with Kisuke's guidance.

Became a demon in 1600 in the same clash that killed Raisho & Genba.

Beautiful, serene, but awkward. Unskilled at interpersonal relationships; prone to long silences. Deeply thoughtful and loyal to his chosen people. He favors greens and grays.

Hijikata Genba (土方 玄蕃) - 1573-1600 - 27

(first mine, 2nd that comm from @azreto again, 3rd mine)

Hair: chestnut, Eyes: chestnut, Scars: 2 thin scars across the face ear-to-ear, 1 vertical scar left of the mouth on the chin, 1 diagonal scar on the forehead from mid right eyebrow to temple, Tattoo: white crane, chrysanthemums, fog, setting sun, Height: 5'9 (175 cm)

Lived with Kisuke the longest; he found him on the outskirts of a battle scavenging what was left behind. He doesn't remember ever having a family; he was likely sold by his parents to settle a debt.

Killed in 1600 by Utsubyo

Picked up a taste for sake young, but it hasn't interfered with his swordsmanship. Messy and unmannered, but fiercely loyal and surprisingly kind. Has a very attuned perception when it comes to nature and patterns, but is blunt to the point of rudeness. Shaggy and rough around the edges.

Makino Yue (牧野 由依) - 1573-1612 - 27

Hair: light brown, Eyes: dark brown, Scars/etc: none

Ujizane's closest childhood friend. If things had gone differently, she would have been his wife. She loved him desperately, and was heartbroken when she believed him dead, but recovered in time and married someone else. Her and her husband have issues with conceiving.

When she reunites with Uji when they're older, she's already married. She befriends the trio, and helps them with their own apprentice.

Sweet and frank, fiercely practical, and prone to oddball ideas. In desperate need of an heir, she approaches Raisho (and the other 2) behind her husband's back, hoping to quietly find a solution for their difficulties. It works, but if she hadn't gotten extremely lucky in her choice of husband, it could have gone very, very badly.

When the trio die, she and her husband take in Mikinosuke as a member of the household.

Dies in childbirth with her 3rd (Mego)

Children: Kaya, Yoshinao, Mego

Mizuharu Mikinosuke (瑞治 幹之輔) - 1585-1653 - 15

(first mine, second another commission from @azreto im serious yall go give him money he's so good) (yes i know it says 15 but he meets demon uji in his early thirties so there)

Hair: black, Eyes: oversaturated blue, Motif: Koi, Height: 5' 10 (178 cm)

An orphan of war that Raisho took in. Trained in swordsmanship by the trio, until their deaths in 1600, when he moved in with Yue's family.

He encountered Demon!Uji in his early thirties, and spared him out of grief and guilt. An anonymous letter he received later gave him the location of Raisho & Genba's graves.

Took a wife arranged for him by Yue's husband; Koike Omiko. Though their relationship starts out stiff, they warm up to each other easily, and have a quiet but loving marriage.

Utsubyou (鬱病) - [???]-1600 (???)

Hair: indigo, Eyes: midnight blue, Demon crest: wings, facial spots

Plague demon. Preferred MO is finding a small village and hiding in the outskirts, poisoning the water and picking off the unwanted until everyone is too ill or incapacitated to stop him, and then feasting. Sleepy and morose, lazy, but territorial.

Kills Genba and Raisho in 1600 when they trespassed into his village. Raisho's final blow was just barely fatal, causing Utsubyou to bleed out faster than he could regenerate. When this blood contaminated Ujizane's wounds, he became a demon.

Sadly many kny writers don’t label fics so when people have filtering on it still comes through, for example I have something that I don’t like so I put it in filtering but it still always comes up- leading me to block the author usually which SUCKS.

Part of the reason why I also put my longer smut under a readmore and put the warnings at the top of the post. But like you said, blocking something you don't like is easy, putting a label on something causing it to be hidden almost completely (it yoinks it from the top tag spot if it was up there and hides it upon other things) is unfair.

All threads from the last time I was in KNY are being dropped! Instead I will start fresh with Nathaniel, since I am taking a different approach this time.

As for Nathaniel himself:

I was rereading my own meta post about Kanao's development recently, and it made it me really eager to do more with her. She is my muse lately. More below the cut, of course.

How did Zenitsu carry a cup over there while using crutches for two busted legs? Don't question it, a girl was crying.

Is Inosuke crying too? Yeah, probably. But if you ask him he'll be utterly convinced of it when he says no.

And as an added "connection" Kaigaku was the child who let the demon into the temple where he lived with Gyomei after the other children expelled him from the temple for stealing

What makes Kimetsu no Yaiba special as a manga is that fights are not just an oppurtunity to show off the cool powers of the invidual characters and new breathing styles. The fights, especially in the latest and most likely final arc are thematic in their set up, to the point that every single character involved in the fight will be connected. All of those characters share something in common. 

Gyomei, Sanemi, Tokito, Genya and Kokushibou are all bound by the idea of family, especially the connection between siblings, and the ways that vitally important family connection can go wrong. MORE UNDER THE CUT.
