No. 25 - HIDE & SEEK

An orange ball of light flew through the hidden palace of Angel Island. Tikal brightened the dark tiles of the walls as she went.

She paused at an intersection, then turned left. Here underground, the armored humans swarming the surface could not be heard. She had seen them through the Master Emerald; men in boots demanding cooperation from the guardian at gunpoint. Knuckles had just barely kept himself from punching their skulls in.

She took another turn through the twisting halls. The soldiers up there were stomping over the island and its life to take whatever they wanted...Tikal remembered her warlike father, and sighed. Centuries apart, people were still very much the same.

She slowed to a stop. Here was a larger room, the left wall decorated with a huge tapestry. In one corner, the guardian was tending to a prone black hedgehog.

Tikal fluttered forwards. "Knuckles?"

He jumped when she called, but relaxed when he saw it was her. "Nobody's coming down after you, right?" He asked.

"No," she said. "I don't think they've found the way down yet."

He nodded, brows furrowed. "That's good, 'cause Shadow's still knocked out," Knuckles said, gesturing at him. "I don't know what they did to him, but he's messed up."

Tikal fluttered over to look, and had to agree. Shadow lay very still on the floor, eyes shut and badly hurt. It was barely perceivable that he was still breathing. His many wounds were bound inelegantly with long grasses woven together and scavenged bits of cloth.

"His wounds are green!" she said, panicking. "That's a really bad sign!"

"I...think they started out green." Knuckles said uncertainly. "That's just how his blood is? He's part alien or something."

In ball-form, Tikal had no face to display how baffled she was by this statement. "Wh...What?"

"I don't know!" Knuckles snapped. "He's weird, okay?!"

"Knuckles, please calm down."

"You calm down!" He took in a deep breath and let it out. It didn't really help. "All these people crawling around my island, and I'm not next to the Master Emerald! Instead, I'm all the way down here, playing nurse for this brooding idiot!"

"We'll work something out," Tikal said soothingly. He was frustrated, she understood, but they needed to stay calm. "Why are these people attacking him? Do you know?"

Knuckles shook his head. His expression was grim. "That's just it," he said. "Yesterday he was working for those guys. I have no idea why they're hunting him down."

"Oh." This really was like her father's bid for power. He had mowed down his own daughter to get what he wanted... "How awful."

"And I can't believe I'm saying this," Knuckles continued, "but I don't think Shadow did anything wrong. He's just..." He paused, trying to think. "I don't know, he's spent the last couple months visiting my island. In peace. Just to talk. I can't really see him doing suddenly losing it on his own boss. Not for no reason."

Shadow stirred just then, catching their attention. He breathed in with a rasp and mumbled something. Knuckles watched intently to see if he would wake.

He didn't. Shadow settled back down, as still as before.

"He'd better wake up soon.” Knuckles grumbled. “I'll slug him if he doesn't."

"That would injure him further, Knuckles!"

"It's tough love, Tikal."

She made a questioning noise. "You love him?"

"THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT--!"

"I don't mind either way, guardian!" She said kindly. "Having him up here has been good for you."

Knuckles sputtered, turning red. "Gah, just watch him while I head back up!"

Tikal chuckled. "Absolutely."

ABSOLUTELY HE IS all of Shadow's possible children are stubborn as hell, no matter who their other parent is (if there is one). Riot is a standout, a fighty girl with TWO headstrong fathers (Knuxdow represent!!).

Cosette is a constant, existing for multiple pairings since she is LITERALLY a clone of her Dadow. She's always adopted and loves her father very much.
