a snippet of the droll Duke Su from the source novel of The Double, to show how well the drama is capturing his vibes. (Spoilers obviously)
Seeing such a thrilling examination, [Kong Liu] felt it was more tiring than the usual practice drill. However, he was still happy. He spoke to Ji Heng, “Did you see? Jiang second miss was so powerful. Today was really an eye opened for everyone, this would let her be in the limelight. I suppose she’s very happy.”
“I think she is a little disappointed,” Ji Heng said.
“Disappointed?” Kong Liu doubted, “Why disappointed? She got first place. These damn six arts competitions are over, she’s number one in each and every one of them. What is to be disappointed about?”
“Unable to borrow a knife to kill somebody, naturally one is disappointed.” Ji Heng laughed lightly and stood up: “Today’s drama is also not bad, just there’s no blood, a bit simpler, let’s see another day.”
Then he walked away.
“Truly a pervert.” Kong Liu muttered. He thought of something and said, “You still haven’t judged!”

Well, friends, this week since Camp NaNo ended has truly been one of the most... weeks I've had in a while. 😑 I won't bore you with the details but it honestly was a rough road. 😵‍💫
On the writing front, my word count was enough for me to "win" Camp NaNo but I still failed to finish anything.
Tumblr media
Yes, "15 Minutes" chapter 11 went through 14 different drafts just in July. Draft 7 and 8 are only a few minutes apart because I completely threw out 7 and restructured it into 8. Nothing has helped. I'm stuck on not only bringing home the events in the chapter, but in shuffling in things from later chapters, taking them back out, restructuring the order of what's here. It's a mess.
It's solvable, of course, but here's the heart of the issue: I don't feel like writing. If you asked me what I would like to do for fun, writing isn't even on the list of options right now. Honestly, if I didn't feel SO compelled to finish what I've started, I'd just chuck all of my WIPs over my shoulder and not look back. But that will legit haunt me for some reason so I can't. But I don't feel like writing, I just don't. There's no joy in it for me right now. I don't know how to get that back. I've rested. I've shifted to other projects.
I was thinking about what I've done in the past to recharge my writing and it finally dawned on me: I always shift to vidding. That way I'm still "storytelling" but I'm thinking visually/musically instead of just in words and that seems to help for some reason.
But I haven't had my Vegas since last November. No wonder my creative batteries are almost dead.
I was hoping to finish/post chapter 11 before I try reinstalling Vegas again, in case it absolutely tanks Georgette. I think I'm going to have to take the chance now, though. Otherwise, I don't know that there's any hope I'll ever finish anything writing-wise. 🤷‍♀️
Anyway, we'll see how it goes. Wish me and Georgette luck!
Tumblr media
(Technically, that's me, Georgette and Eobard. Who knows, maybe Eo wants to do some vidding, too? 🤷‍♀️😂)

There's a historical romance discussion space I'd really like to engage with, but can't, because it feels like every other post is bemoaning a lack of historical accuracy from "lazy authors", while at the same time repeating inaccuracies over and over in the community....
and somehow these devotees to accuracy seem to have never heard of KJ Charles, who writes incredibly well-researched books that happen to be about queer couples, or Beverly Jenkins, who has literal bibliographies citing historical records and resources... while writing exclusively Black historical romance

Started re-reading Bath Tangle because...why not, still in a Heyer mood. A few observations:
Heyer was pretty not sexy in style, even for her time period, but I do feel like Serena and Rotherham have Belligerent Sexual Tension (tm.)
Is this the only one of her books where the hero and heroine are exes? This would be called a "Second Chance Romance" in romance industry parlance.

I feel like devil's cub is always at the forefront of my mind whenever I think about the heyer novels I want turned into movies, but god sylvester is up there too.
Like I want to see the expression in sylvester's eyes when he looks at phoebe and I want to see the botched proposal scene which I think could rival pride and prejudice's and I want to see edmund being a little imp and I want to see tom and phoebe and sylvester bantering with each other.
It's all so vivid in my head already but I just need to see it.

One of the joys of reading literature from another culture or time is noticing all the variants of prejudice that exist in this microcosm. Some of my favorites, which are rarely discussed:
Georgette Heyer, who wrote Regency romances in the 1940s, includes a teeth-baringly awful Jewish moneylender in the otherwise hilarious "The Grand Sophy"
L.M. Montgomery, most famous for "Anne of Green Gables", opens that very novel with a pair of elderly siblings planning to adopt an orphan boy because the French Canadian farm hands they've been hiring seasonally have been so unreliable
Speaking of French stereotypes, what's up with Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Links" in which they [SPOILERS] pass off a dead man as someone else and they can do this because he's of a "typical French type"?!?
On the other side of the channel, Alexandre Dumas spends most of a chapter of "The Count of Monte Cristo" making fun of a "typically phlegmatic Englishman" who delivers news of financial salvation to a family on the brink of ruin, and then proceeds to disapprove of their tears of joy
Jane Austen writes in a few throwaway mentions of the slave trade, that don't quite elide the fact that the family wealth in "Mansfield Park" is Caribbean plantations worked by enslaved people
J.M Barrie's "Peter Pan"... oh wow, yeah, the portrayal of Native Americans... yeah, ok, let's go back to talking about that cannonically homicidal Tinkerbell
Literally anything in "Gone with the Wind" that's not about rich (or once-rich) white people
God, there really is nothing like 20s detective fiction to remind you that prejudice is a social construct.
You'll have a story with a crossdressing thief which is mildly transmisogynistic but completely devoid of modern vitriol; it literally comes off as "here is a fun oddity that lets me be Clever about French grammar"
And in the very next story you will learn fifteen different slurs for Italians

2935. Gambling Frogs
This is "Gambling Frogs." Just laying around, thinking.
Tumblr media
When I was younger, my brother had a painting of gambling frogs. It was a knockoff of the more famous gambling dogs painting. But I didn't know about the dog version. Not until years later. When someone brought it up at a boozy party. You mean the frog painting? I said. No, no, they said, dogs. The dog painting. It was dogs. I thought they were drunker than I previously thought. Dogs! Gambling! Didn't make sense. Frogs, on the other hand... Now frogs made sense. Something about it felt right. Closer to the bone of life. Yes, I think fondly of my brother's painting of frogs gambling, and I can't think of anything truer.

Meet my Disney Descendants OCs! Children of Bill Sykes, Tiana and Naveen and Charlotte La Bouff. They live an altered version of canon, because we all know that canon has serious flaws in writing, worldbuilding and tone.

“Hey, darlin’, how’s it goin’?”
Charlie nuzzled Georgette with a chuckle, tail wagging behind him. When he pulled away, he smiled.
“Been a minute since I’ve seen ya… how ya been doin’?”
@let-me-be-surprised for Georgette!
Tumblr media
"I HOPE YOU'VE had a decent bath today," grimaced reply, though there was no real malice in the words. perhaps HONESTY - she didn't much like the idea of the mutt nuzzling her while filthy - but georgette hadn't made to pull away. that was more than she might have done prior to knowing him on a more personal level. smile d i d stretch across her muzzle, semi forced initially only due to the potential ick he might have pressed upon her luscious fur, but when he provided distance, there came ease and genuine pleasure with his appearance. eyes batted, humming a soft tune as she pondered the inquiry. "a star, as always. it's tiring, but in the best way." someone had to do it. and if it such was her burden to bear? then so be it! the world deserved it. "i don't suppose there's been anything exciting... erm... out h e r e?" did she really want to know? the poodle couldn't be certain, but it was only polite to ask. there were days she felt the less she understood of this world, the better. it was far from the sort she could manage... baths were much too important.
