A wolf's love letter

Dear Alice,

I know you can’t read this letter; I wish you could. But I can’t stop thinking of you. I am writing in hopes that it’ll make things easier for me.

The Pack is doing great. The tiniest ones are growing fast, Claw-of-Woods had her first change even! She was so happy, she spent her entire night running and howling in the grove until the full moon set. I wish you could have seen.

Whip and Clockwork are alright, their health isn’t declining too much; they can still keep up with the grandkids. Knifedance Marie got into university, she decided she’ll be a lawyer. We’re all so proud of her, she’s going overseas, all the way to somewhere in England. It’s a very posh place, I heard.

You’ve been gone for a year now, and I miss you more than I could say. I want to tell you so many things. And on top of that, it happened right after our engagement.

I wish you were here. We’d make the cookies you always liked with Dulcie, and you could lay in the sun reading. We could press pansies. Today, it hurts a lot to not have you around. I hope that if there is an afterlife, you’re happy in it.

I’m so proud of you. I know you never felt like a pack member before, not even when you became an honorary werewolf, but to me, you always were. You still are. Especially in your last moments.

I can’t imagine how awful the end was. I know burns are very painful and I don’t want you, I never wanted you to experience them. I’m so sorry you had to. I’m so sorry I couldn’t protect you. I wish I could have.

I was so afraid when you walked into that house.

I never would have thought you’d do it, even if it makes sense for you, you were always so selfless. Still, sacrificing yourself to a fire spirit! I don’t know if I could have done it. But you have, and it worked. We all escaped, we’re all fine, even I got away with some scorched fur.

You saved them. You saved the pack.

I wish I could tell you how much I admire and treasure you. This was a death befitting a werewolf, no fighter of Luna would have been braver.

Still, I miss you so much. I wish you didn’t have to.

I hope that if there’s an afterlife, I can hug you in it again.
