Knee Arthritis, Stages, Available Treatments, Cost Of Treatment with Conventional Vs Stem Cell Therapy
Recent research has shown that people over 40 who have even a small amount of knee pain have a 90% chance of having knee osteoarthritis even if x-rays are normal.
Osteoarthritis is mainly due to wear and tear of the weight-bearing joints and affects knee joints commonly.
Osteoarthritis of the knee occurs in synovial joints known as “joint fluid” which reduces the friction and provides a cushion between two joints. Ends of the bones are surrounded by the shiny substance called “articular cartilage” and this cartilage helps in absorbing shocks and also allows for gliding between the bones. Surrounding the synovial joint is a synovial membrane that produces “synovial fluid” which acts as a lubricant to reduce friction between joints.
Knee osteoarthritis particularly means degradation of the articular cartilage which results in the breakdown damage resulting in joint space narrowing and starting onset of osteoarthritis.
Stages Of Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis of the knee does not develop rapidly but gradually over time and once it starts developing, progression is inevitable and can be slowed down but cannot be stopped. Once osteoarthritis of the knee starts developing it goes through multiple stages such as:
Minor
Mild
Moderate
Severe
Minor Osteoarthritis: As this is the first stage of knee osteoarthritis and like any other start it has a very slow onset and the patient might never feel pain or joint stiffness and even with high physical activity might feel a little or no pain.
As this stage mostly stays under the radar therefore it stays hidden until a sudden or acute onset occurs which needs a patient visit to the hospital.
The minor stage requires no treatment even if it is diagnosed early and some minor lifestyle changes are recommended by the primary physician.

Mild Osteoarthritis: This is the stage where few symptoms start showing up but only at intervals not regularly and the patient can walk, or climb stairs but not for more than 20-30 min.
At this stage, bone spurs can be seen in x-ray exams although bone spurs seem a little abnormal joint space remains normal therefore it is classified as a mild stage and the joint is stiff and felt uncomfortable sometimes.
Pain can last from a few minutes to 30 minutes and high physical demand activity affects pain duration accordingly, mostly OTC (over-the-counter) medication is prescribed at this stage which provides sufficient pain relief.
Exercise and some diet plans are recommended to ease pain and improving joint strength with some additional support from braces to alleviate stress on the joints.
Moderate Osteoarthritis: At this stage damage to the joint becomes apparent and pain sensation is frequent with stiffness and cartilage breakdown affects patients life. Walking, climbing stairs, swimming or running seems too much of a difficult task and inflammation is visible on the knee sockets.
This stage is such progressive that even OTC medication doesn’t work effectively and physicians or orthopedics prescribe strong and narcotic pain killers like “Codeine” etc.
Lifestyle modification and physical therapy are inefficient at this stage or fail to stop progression and pain sensation for most of the patients.
Severe Osteoarthritis: Severe osteoarthritis is by definition the last stage where articular cartilage has been completely torn and break down and bones are rubbing against each other with severe pain and stiffness. The gap between joints is gone and whenever a patient is trying to walk bones rub against each other causing severe pain and inflammation.
The patient is restricted to bed and walking, going to the washroom, climbing up or downstairs becomes impossible. Pain medication also provides a few hours of relief and recommended treatment for stage 4 is complete knee replacement surgery or “arthroplasty” where the inflamed joint is removed and replaced with the metal joint that completely replaces the torn and breakdown cartilage resulting in significant improvement in the quality of life and pain relief.
Although the surgical option is the preferred choice, a costly one also as it costs as much as 1 million to 1.2 million in the surgical procedure along with medication and afterward physical therapy and further diagnosis of improvement.
Stem Cell Therapy For Knee Osteoarthritis:
Stem Cells are the ones that are responsible for the natural healing of the body therefore stem cell therapy in Pakistan for knee arthritis is the best option for treatment and long-term relief of knee arthritis.
Stem cells are rich in anti-inflammatory properties, therefore, reduces pain and swelling at knee joints immediately even for stage 4 osteoarthritis patients suffering years of pain and immobility due to this disease.
Although stem cell therapy is given frequently at few weeks intervals and once only is not recommended. The human body repairs itself slowly with time, and stem cells at an older age are quite less effective in treating cartilage damage. Therefore, outer sourced stem cell injection provides quick damage repair for knee osteoarthritis and prolongs the delay of surgical need for complete knee replacement.

If you are facing constant pain in the knee or if your daily movement is affected by the immobility in the knee, you must read on. This blog will help people who have faced sports injury or are in turmoil because of immobility in the knee. The secret to staying fit is out. It is the Knee Replacement Surgery.
Knee Replacement Surgery is the new age modern surgical process which helps patients get rid of the pain and damaged knee because of arthritis. The best orthopedic of Punjab, Dr. Tanveer Bhutani says osteoarthritis is the most common reason for patients to undergo the knee replacement surgery. He recommends that patients whose knee joints have been damaged by arthritis or any trauma must consider the surgical procedure and get relief from constant pain.

There are no age or weight restrictions for total knee replacement surgery. Recommendations for surgery are based on a patient's pain and disability, not age. So, if you experience pain that affects your day-to-day activities, visit our knee specialist. #KneePain #Arthritis https://drrajkanna.com
