Rheumatoid arthritis causes inflammation of the synovial membrane and results in excessive synovial fluid leading to pain and stiffness. Traumatic arthritis, following an injury, causes damage to the cartilage of the knee.
WHAT IS KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY?
Knee replacement surgery can be performed as a partial or a total knee replacement surgery. The surgeon replaces the diseased or damaged joint surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic components shaped to allow smooth and pain free motion of the knee.
The prosthesis has 3 components: the tibial component (to resurface the top of the tibia, or shin bone); the femoral [thigh bone] component (to resurface the end of the thigh bone; and the patellar component (to resurface the bottom of the kneecap that rubs against the thigh bone).

Patients are asked to take a few steps after a few hours of the TKR. Patients are trained to walk using crutches or a walker for three to six weeks after knee replacement surgery. Physical therapy under supervision continues for another three to eight weeks to strengthen the knee and the surrounding muscles for better balance and speedy rehabilitation.
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS AFTER KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY?

PRECAUTIONS AFTER TKR
While Lying Down:
Lie flat on your back as much as possible and do isometric knee exercises after every two hours.
Do not place a pad or pillow behind your knee when lying down.
Keep your knee straight even during leg elevation.
Do not sleep on your surgical side before consulting with your doctor.
While getting dressed:
Do not wear pants while standing. Sit on a chair or the edge of your bed for more stability.
Use devices like a long-handled shoe horn, elastic shoe laces, and an aid for putting on socks.
First put pants, socks on the leg that you had surgery on.
When you undress, remove clothes from your surgery side last.
While Sitting:
Do not sit in the same position for more than 45 to 60 minutes at a time.
Keep your feet and knees pointed straight ahead, not turned in or out.
Sit in a firm chair with a straight back and armrests. After your surgery, avoid stools, sofas, soft chairs, rocking chairs, and chairs that are too low.
When getting up from a chair, slide toward the edge of the chair, and use the arms of the chair, your walker, or crutches for support to get up.
While bathing and showering:
Place anti-skid mats in the bathing area.
Take a bath while standing or use a stable plastic chair for sitting in the shower.
Keep the bathroom floor dry and clean.
Do not bend, squat, or reach for anything while you are showering.
Do not sit down on the floor, it will be too hard to get up safely.
Use an elevated toilet seat or install handrails.
While using stairs
When you are going up stairs, step first with your leg that did not have surgery.
When you are going down stairs, step first with your leg that has had surgery.
Take one step at a time until your muscles get stronger.
Use railing while going up and down the stairs.
Avoid long flights of stairs for the first 2 months after surgery.
While getting into and riding in a car:
Get into the car from earth level and move the front seat back as far as possible.
Car seats shouldn't be too low. Sit on a pillow if needed.
Take assistance and have someone help lift your legs into the car.
Avoid long journeys for the first few months after total knee replacement and walk around every 45 to 60 minutes.
Do ankle pumps while riding in the car to avoid stiffness and reduce the risk of blood clots.
Turn your body as someone helps you lift your legs out of the car.
Scoot and lean forward.
Standing on both legs, use your crutches or walker to help you stand up.
Avoiding driving yourself for at least 4 weeks post TKR.
While walking:
Use your crutches or walker for around 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. Use a cane when your doctor suggests.
Put only the amount of weight on your knee that your physical therapist recommends.
While standing, stretch your knees as straight as possible.
Take small steps when you are turning.
Wear shoes with nonskid soles.
Avoid walking on wet surfaces or uneven ground.
