When planning out my trip to Dubai, I noticed that all of the tourist spots were really far away from each other. On top of that, the public transport in Dubai isn’t great. With these two things in mind, I decided to go on a Dubai day tour in order to squeeze in a few things I wanted to see, but didn’t care to take a taxi to for the sake of a few photos. We found a few options on Klook (also where we booked our night desert safari) and narrowed our decision down based on attractions offered. The tour was also very reasonably priced, working out to around HK$150 per person for 5 hours of sightseeing. Read on to find out what I liked and what I didn’t like about the Dubai day tour.

The main thing I liked about this tour was that it squeezed in 6+ sights in a span of 5 or so hours. We had one day left in Dubai and there were still a couple of things we wanted to see, but didn’t want to take a taxi all the way out there as it was quite far from our hotel. The sights I looked forward to seeing were the Burj Al Arab and Palm Island.

Something to keep in mind on this tour is the timing of things. At Jumeirah Beach, we were only given about 15/20 minutes to walk around and take photos of the Burj Al Arab. For Palm Island, we just drove through it to get to the Atlantis Hotel where we got out of the vehicle to take a quick photo and then got right back in.

The tour began with a visit to the Dubai Museum. While some parts were somewhat interesting, we spent far too long here (this was the longest stop on the tour for some reason) and the last bit of the museum with ‘real life’ displays were just plain weird. We also stopped at this local art shop where we all had to go in and listen to a short talk from the sales person in hopes of buying something. They are clearly working on a commission basis here. These two stops took about 1.5 hours or more at the start of our tour. I felt that the time could have been better dispersed throughout the other stops.

On the itinerary we were meant to end the tour with the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall. Our tour guide said they had planned on simply dropping everyone off at the mall if they wanted to see it. Because we had already been, we skipped out on this and were dropped back off at our hotel. Again, you get what you pay for.

Overall thoughts

If you’re tight on time or are just looking to get a quick (and cheap) glimpse at some of the main attractions in Dubai, then the Dubai day tour is a great option. That being said, if you have more time to spend in Dubai, I would recommend skipping the day tour and just visiting the attractions you’re interested in on your own. If you’re able to, I think renting a car while you’re there would be beneficial and make sightseeing a whole lot easier. Or, if you’re not on a budget, hire a private driver on whichever days you’re looking to get around and sightsee.

[1] During his 2nd play date on 20180413, his classmate kindly showed him the photo albums from her visit to KidZania Dubai. Little Prince was especially fascinated by the opportunity to be a pilot through a role play. Considering how expensive KidZania is, we are thankful for the opportunities to visit the real cockpit.

On 20180419, after I explained the ticket prices of KidZania in different locations, frugal Little Prince told me that he does not want to visit KidZania anymore. He was contented to watch a YouTube video on a day in KidZania. However, we could still make a reward visit after he has done some kind deeds (e.g. read books for his sister daily) during Summer 2018.

1. Món đậu: Sa Tor

Xuất xứ từ miền Nam Thái Lan, món đậu Sa tor có mùi vị cực kỳ mạnh mẽ. Nguyên liệu làm món ăn này gồm có đậu Sa tor được chiên với ớt, thịt gà, thịt lợn, thịt bò hoặc tôm. Nếu chỉ nhìn vào hình thức món ăn, bạn sẽ thấy rất hấp dẫn bởi màu xanh của những hạt đậu, màu đỏ của ớt xào lẫn với thịt. Nhưng có một điều làm nên đặc trưng của món ăn này chính là mùi không mấy dễ chịu. Những hạt đậu Sa tor thường có mùi hăng hắc, hơi hôi cho dù chúng đã được tẩm ướp kỹ và xào cùng với nhiều nguyên liệu vị thơm ngon khác. 

Trên thực tế, mặc dù ăn Pad Sa Tor dễ bị đầy bụng nhưng người Thái vẫn rất chuộng món ăn này. Nhiều nghiên cứu đã chỉ ra rằng đậu Sa tor có tác động tích cực trong việc ngăn ngừa hàng loạt chứng bệnh: tiểu đường, huyết áp, béo phì, thiếu máu, trầm cảm, táo bón, thậm chí là chứng nôn nao. 

  2. Cợm trộn tôm: Kao Klook Gapi

Đây cũng là một trong những món ăn dân dã nổi tiếng của Thái Lan. Kao Klook Gapi đơn giản mang nghĩa cơm trộn tôm: Kao là gạo, klook là hỗn hợp và gapi là tôm. Người Thái thường ăn món này kèm với cá thu chiên, hay cha-om, trứng tráng và rau. Ngoài tính bổ dưỡng, thì thêm một điều đáng nói về Kao Klook Gapi đó là mùi của nó sẽ "đọng" lại rất lâu trong miệng bạn. Vì vậy, bạn nên chuẩn bị sẵn một viên kẹo bạc hà để khử mùi sau khi ăn. 

  3. Gỏi đu đủ: Som Tam Pla-Ra

Nếu như Som Tam là món gỏi đu đủ nổi tiếng của người Thái, thì Som Tam Pla-Ra có nghĩa  là gỏi đu đủ ăn cùng một loại cá được lên men có tên Pla-Ra. Món ăn bị liệt vào danh sách đặc sản “nặng mùi” của Thái cũng bởi mùi vị của loại cá lên men này. Som Tam Pla -Ra được người dân địa phương rất yêu thích nên những quầy bán món này có thể dễ dàng tìm thấy ở khắp các góc phố của Bangkok.

  4. Nước chấm đậu nành: Tao Jeow Lon

Đây là một loại nước chấm được làm từ đậu nành lên men nấu với nước dừa và ớt. Rất nhiều du khách nước ngoài đã phải bịt miệng ậm ọe vì mùi của món nước chấm... chua như mùi em bé vừa trớ này. Tuy nhiên, nếu như vượt qua được rào cản là cái mùi khó chịu này, bạn có thể thưởng thức vị rất lạ và nhiều chất dinh dưỡng của nước chấm đậu nành. Người Thái thường dùng thứ nước này để chấm rau luộc hoặc trộn ăn cùng cơm. 

  5. Cá muối phơi nắng: Pla Kem

  Pla Kem, tức cá muối phơi nắng, xứng đáng đứng đầu những món ăn “nặng mùi” nhất của người Thái. Chỉ cần chạm vào cái chảo vừa dùng để chế biến món ăn, ngư���i ta cũng có thể “giật mình” vì cái mùi hôi đặc trưng của nó. Pla Kem thường được chế biến đơn giản với nước cốt chanh, nước mắm, hẹ tây và ớt đẻ ăn cùng cơm nóng.  Được làm từ cá nước mặn nên bạn dễ dàng mua được ở các thị trấn ven biển của Thái Lan. Tuy nhiên, cũng chẳng khó khăn để tìm thấy món ăn này tại các thành phố lớn như Thủ đô Bangkok. 

  6. Chè sầu riêng: Kao Neaw Durian

  Sầu riêng là thứ quả rất nổi tiếng và phổ biến tại Thái Lan. Thứ quả này với người thích nó thì mùi vị thật tuyệt vời, còn ai đã không thích thì quả là một cơn ác mộng khi ngửi phải mùi. Ở Thái có rất nhiều món ngon được chế biến từ sầu riêng, trong đó, phổ biến và được lòng thực khách nhất là chè sầu riêng sữa dừa cùng với cơm nếp. Sầu riêng là loại trái cây bổ dưỡng chứa nhiều vitamin B, C và E và có một hàm lượng sắt cao. Nó cũng chứa các axit amino giúp cho chúng ta giảm bớt sự lo lắng, trầm cảm và mất ngủ. 

Cho dù đã được "xoa dịu" bởi vị thơm của gạo nếp, nước sữa dừa nhưng mùi vị sầu riêng trong món chè này vẫn rất mạnh. Vì thế, không có gì ngạc nhiên nếu sau khi thưởng thức, bạn lên một chiếc xe bus hay đứng ở nơi công cộng sẽ có vài người bịt mũi khi đứng gần bạn.
