In case anyone thought it was just a meme, no. The "Klingon Therapist" is pretty much the canonical approach Klingons have to mental health.

This scene got me right in the gut when I first saw it. It was revealed earlier in the episode that Garak suffers from extreme claustrophobia, experiencing a severe attack just a few scenes before this one. I was already expecting Martok and Worf to dismiss Garak’s mental illness, especially because the Klingon Empire prides its people on physical strength. I was waiting for them to call him a coward, not “getting over it” like I’ve heard so many times in my own life about mental illness. But as seen above that’s not what happened, the exact opposite does. Its moments like this that make me love Star Trek, even for all its flaws. Sometimes I get to see past my conditioned reaction of the worst, and get to see the best in people instead.

TDLR; Star Trek may be about aliens in the future, but it connects to me on a human level - more than most modern shows do today.

What I think is wonderful is that there is some canonical foundation to this being the approach that Klingons would take towards mental health.

In DS9 S5 E19 "By Inferno's Light" Garak is struggling with claustrophobia but faces it and then Martok and Worf comment on his resolve:

Martok: "There is no greater enemy than one's own fear" Worf: "It takes a brave man to face them"

A Betazoid character who isn't in a nurturing profession, but is a tactical officer.

"Captain, I sense they know they're about to get their asses handed to them"

The Black Dog, depression, that lead blanket thats particularly uncomfortable, whatever you call it, that shit SUCKS. As someone who's been through it to the point of attempting suicide in high school and having a complete breakdown in my twenties, at a restaurant, on my birthday no less, I'm well aware of how shit this battle can be. Mariner in The Inner Fight

I am so, so glad that we not only finally get to see exactly why Mariner is reckless, insubordinate, and self-sabotaging; but that they tied it back to Sito from the OG Lower Decks TNG episode and trauma from the Dominion War. That was heartbreaking on a level I was not expecting (even if I had heard fan theories that she had seen some shit from the Dominion War). It was so well done, not simply because it provided justification for why she is the way she is, but because we get to hear her rationale for it, and it makes such perfect, heartbreaking sense. She's absolutely terrified of the idea that she may have to order the people she cares about to their deaths, so she keeps herself in a perpetual state of not having to.

And having the Klingon playing the therapist role in that scene? Oh my god, cherry on the sundae.

This show is so, so fucking good.
