Lance let out a shaken sigh and looked back at Keith’s face, scanning its sharp angles and soft curves, the dark circles beneath his old friend’s eyes. ��God,” He swallowed hard. “Look at you. You’re all bones. They starved you in that prison, didn’t they?”

A pause. “They didn’t starve me.”

“Keith,” Lance stepped forwards, holding his arms out. “Come here.”

He shook his head and started to back away, grass rustling with the movement. “No, Lance, I’m sick—”

“I don’t care.” Lance closed the gap between them and wrapped his arms around Keith, who stiffened for a moment and then melted, hands curling up to grab Lance’s shoulders.

Keith broke the silence after a long moment. “I wanted to—”

“I know.”

“I felt like…” Keith took a breath that rattled them both. “It’s too late now, isn’t it?”

Lance held Keith’s frail form in his arms, listening to the crack of bullets as the fight raged on behind them. “I don’t know,” He whispered into Keith’s hair. This was a lie. Of course he knew. They both did.
