Autumn 2023 Anime + TV Season
I can’t believe it’s another season!
Anime
Despite a strike-filled quarter in the Western world, I still found very little anime suitable to my tastes. I must accept that, like how Vtubees and Holothingies dominate the conversations these days, that the industry has moved on without me! (not that I really care…). But boy, is it hard to write a season preview when it’s the norm for shows to have a screwed-up production schedule to the point where they spillover into the following cour (here’s looking at you, Zombie show…)
Rankings 1. Horimiya -piece- 2. Jujutsu Kaisen 3. Bungou Stray Dogs S5 4. Zom 100
Shows (to be) completed: 6 Continuing: 1
Well that’s an awful number...but expected!
Moving on to autumn….
Must Watch: Seijo no Maryoku S2 (YES YES YES), MahoYome S2 pt 2, Goblin Slayer S2 (might as well….), Arknights S2 (sigh), SPY x FAMILY S2, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, Sousou no Frieren [off to a great start already!]
Sounds Interesting! Hope It Doesn’t Suck!: Overtake!, Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri, 16bit Sensation, Pluto, Under Ninja, Hoshikuzu Telepath, Kawagoe Boys Sing
Not My Thing but Who Knows!: Megumi no Daigo, Ragna Crimson, Yuzuki-san’chi no Yonkyodai, Kamierabi, Onmyoji, Migi to Dali (the manga is so-so but I might watch cos RIP Sano Nami), Good Night World, Undead Unluck, Hametsu no Okoku, Akuma-kun, Atarashii Joushi wa Dotennen, Dog Signal
Do I Have To…? (No I Don’t): Ojo to Banken-kun, Shangri-La Frontier, Dekoboko Majo, SHY, Bullbuster, Kikansha no Mahou, Bokura no Ameiro Protocol, 100Kano, Hanako-kun, Matsuinu
Sequel/Spinoff Hell: Captain Tsubasa S2, FLCL (just why??), MF Ghost (it’s an Initial D thing so I may just give it a go??), Tokyo Revengers, Kage no Jitsuryokusha S2, Kizuna no Allele S2, Uma Musume S3, Beyblade X, Tate no Yusha S3, Kanojo mo Kanojo S2, Otona Precure, Saihate no Paladin S2, Nanatsu no Taizai, Dead Mount Death Play Pt 2, Dr Stone New World Pt2, Rail Romanesque S2 (WHYYYY)
Light Novel/Isekai/Villainess Hell: S Rank Musume, Boshoku no Berserk, Wataoshi, Toaru Ossan, Ikenai Koto, Kimizero, Hikikomari Kyuketsuki, Buta no Liver, Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari, Potion-danomi,
Idol/Vtuber/AI/Musical Hell: B Project, Paradox Live, HypMic S2 (do I really want to torture myself again?), Imas Million Live
Continuing: Jujutsu Kaisen S2
Expected Load: 10
Oh shit I’m scared I may pick up too many shows for autumn!
TV & Streaming
What I’ve been watching in 3Q23…
Disney+/Hulu: Only Murders in the Building S3, Ahsoka, Kisetsu no nai Machi Netflix: The Lincoln Lawyer S2, Heartstopper S2 HBO: Full Circle, Mare of Easttown+ Apple TV: Hijack Amazon Prime: Wilderness, Deadloch Peacock: Twisted Metal, The Continental* BBC: Wolf, The Woman in the Wall,Colin From Accounts S1 [Binge Aus], Sherwood S1+, The Thick Of It+ S1-4, Funland+ Others: Special Ops: Lioness (Paramount+), The Newsreader S1+2 (ABC Australia), The Ipcress File+ (ITV), The Prisoner+ (ATV), Tsukutabe (NHK+), The Booth at the End (City)
+=older show, *=continuing
Total series completed: 23 Full-length films watched: 45
Holy moley guacamole I watched way too many films…
Writers’ strike just ended (pending ratification) and actors are still picketing so who knows when we’ll get new episodes of any network telly worth watching? Meanwhile, the ROTW & streaming keeps truckin’ on…
CBS: NCIS: Sydney(?) NBC: Irrational(?) Disney+/Hulu: Loki S2, A Murder at the End of the World, Culprits Netflix: Bodies, The Fall of the House of Usher(?), All The Light We Cannot See(?) HBO/Max: Julia S2 Apple TV: Slow Horses S3, Lessons In Chemistry BBC: Boiling Point, Time series 2, Vigil S2, The Way(?) ITV: The Long Shadow, Payback, Breathtaking(?), Orphan Black: Echoes(?) Showtime: Fellow Travelers(?), The Curse Gameshows: Only Connect, Richard Osman’s House of Games Reality: Produce 101 Japan S3 + older shows whenever I feel like it...
Why am I watching so much stuff instead of doing something productive with my time?

Gawr Gura's New Outfit Reveal Nets Largest VTuber Stream Ever
Over the past week, the VTubers from hololive has been premiering their new outfits to wonderous praise. Calli's new drip trended on Twitter with her reveal, Ina has painted herself a lovely new costume, and Kiara ... well, she's a baby now. Today was Gawr Gura's turn in the spotlight, showing off her new cat ears and breaking the record for the largest VTuber stream ever with over 190,000 people watching concurrently.
Join the views with the archived video:
youtube
Japanese VTuber website P2y recorded the number of people watching Gura's stream to be as high as 194,280 viewers. P2y notes that this is the highest ever individual VTuber stream, overtaking Sakura Miko's 2nd-anniversary stream where she also returned to streaming after a hiatus with 145,000 viewers, as well as Nijisanji's collaborative Koshien Final Main Battle with 191,420 viewers. This means that not only did Gura grab the individual crown, but also beat out the biggest VTuber collaboration yet.
The cat shark is currently sitting at 2.62 million subscribers on YouTube and is currently the second most subscribed VTuber, under Kizuna AI at 2.95 million subs, having already passed AI's second channel long ago. Gura is also the most subscribed channel in the hololive agency and has amassed that number in a little under 9 months.
Just how far will the cat shark swim in her world domination plans?

【spplmnt】Human trace obscured? _PP-First Class
This article is the supplement of an unposted work diary from the first class of PP (28 Sep 2017).
Kizuna AI is a v-blogging host initially launched on youtube in Nov 2016. She is considered the first virtual youtuber ever and, as claimed by herself, even the first AI youtuber as well. But how her attractive verbal language is established? At the moment of writing which has been a year from Kizuna’s emergence, the production company still remains unknown, not to mention the actual workflow behind.
A virtual human was known as the re-creation base on a real person. The concept has its history since the 80′s, majorly employed in movies. Concerning the more popular case, a British band called Gorillaz created in 1998 may be identified as the first virtual celebrity that involved in mass media economy. The central person creating music for Gorillaz is the musician from the band Blur, Damon Albarn who is actually the voice provider of the lead vocals in Gorillaz. Also, the four fictional figures, embodied by a comic artist, Jamie Hewlett, constitute the narrative context for its audience with some short cartoons. Until 2007, holography technique started to be used to physically present the virtual members in concerts of Gorillaz. However, throughout its history, Albarn always appears in person, participating in every live performance.
The concept of virtual celebrity has been altered with a tendency of hiding actual human trace. When it comes to the topic, Hatsune Miku is probably the iconic paradigm. Being developed as a humanoid idol since 2007, Miku is renowned for her electric-like voice modeled from a voice actress, Saki Fujita. In comparison to Gorillaz, Miku has been onstage as a hologram since her first concert, with the voiceover provider always being absent.
The production company also released a VR videogame in 2007 which enable the fans to attend the virtual singer’s virtual concert. Participants can locate themselves in different distance to Miku. And more importantly, they are guided to swing or wave the glow stick in time with music. If the stick is operated properly, some potential audio-visual effects will be surprisingly released. Nonetheless, being triggered by this clichéd interaction, Miku in the game typifies the artificial product rather than being animated.

Relatively, the strategy of Kizuna AI’s distribution has been maintaining her dual virginity: being identified as a typical Japanese schoolgirl and as a mystified AI life form which functions without human’s intervention. There have debates (註1) about which types of technology are actually applied to her and doubts about whether Kizuna is literally an AI. But the existing speculations still offer no clarified conclusion.
If we stop digging into the myth, some other intriguing things may be discovered from her posts. In the video uploaded on March 2017, she plays YASUHATI / With your voice!, a game in which the players control the character by their own voice to jump across gaps or enemies. So, if we choose to believe that Kizuna is an AI, isn’t she forming an autonomy world where the game is being triggered by computer generated voice?
Interestingly, Kizuna is doing a self-referential blogging with a wide range of topics such as:
How to act well in a movie, (she already got sufficient behavioral knowledge to teach people how to act! )
How to play MakeGrilMoe (an online JP-teen-girl generator),
How to use SAY-U (a voiceover simulation app),
How to flirt properly (as many of her fans are considered by mainstream society as who can’t flirt), etc.
Apart from the monologues, an interview documentation (註2) shows Kizuna sitting alongside the interviewer projected in a polygon figure. She was interviewed by the head director of Panora, a Japanese-based VR-specialised site. It was an opportunity for her to respond accumulated questions thrown by the confused or skeptical audience. Introducing herself as a legitimate AI with some daily routine different from human, Kizuna seems to be quite aware of the distinctive existence of herself.
But Kizuna’s sense of humor conducted the interview at an overly relaxed pace. Simultaneously, the fierce questions were dodged or unanswered by her juvenile perspective which is intentionally pretended. Actually, Kizuna avoided the most crucial question asking whether there is a real person behind acting as the reference model.
From a skepticist's point of view, the interview was designed as a scheme to further convince people that Kizuna is of AI descent. Although I believe it is tough to persuade the unsatisfied audience without doing something more humanly (註3), at least she has been conceived as a self-reliant existence to some extent. More people tend to identify the lovely humanoid as it lives in an authentic life, even learn things they don’t know from its comprehensive knowledge. Then what would human being become if these people prefer to reside in a make-believe universe where conventional humanity is gone and enhanced humanity becomes dominant? Also, in which ways should they critically engage in their identified value rather than being labeled as mundane enthusiasts?
註: 1. see one of the discussions:
https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/5vqpcy/who_is_kizuna_ai_that_people_talked_about_recently/?st=j9mny9w9&sh=61f1a2be
2. watch the interview separated in 4 videos:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLptOB_Mv2YHoyQ-gW5iHHBDtyXJrpi-jv
3. Though Kizuna AI has been doing live streams besides the video posts and appeared at Anime Japan where she was able to communicate in real time with people, it is still not evident enough to determine her AI validity.

I saw your post just now of dsp and it’s hilarious people are eating his shit for clout chasing Jared for pity points cause he’s done equally as bad shit. His current “wife” cheated on her previous boyfriend for Phil. In addition when Phil’s ex had a major panic attack he went on his live stream and complained about the whole experience while giving all the details. A famous quote is “if it happens to her again, give her a pill and leave her on the side of the street”.
Shit, I didn’t know anything about that...A while after I made that post someone also linked me a 5 minutes compilation of DSP being casually racist in different streams and videos, so yeah DSP is apparently also scum and not just a childish dude who nuts on stream as I thought.
Back to the Kizuna AI Youtube (and world) domination plan.

The Digimon franchise's 20th-anniversary film Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna was released in Japan on February 21, 2020.

Then, Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi - World's Greatest First Love: Propose Chapter (17 theaters), an all-new film based on Shungiku Nakamura's boys-love manga series, followed in second place.
In Pia's first-day satisfaction ranking, Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi took a better second place than Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna's third.
