The Return of Georgie Pie

After 15 years lying dormant at the bottom of some McDonald’s executive’s desk draw, Georgie Pie is back in its nostalgic glory! But does it live up to the hype? Does it live up to people’s fond memories of this iconic brand and its delicious pies?

The only flavour being served up currently is the Kiwi favourite, steak mince and cheese. McDonald’s (the owner of the Georgie Pie brand) has plans to roll out additional flavours if the Georgie Pie pilot scheme is successful over the coming months.

Coming in its traditional square shape, the pie was nice and soft to bite into. The pastry wasn’t overly greasy or flaky which was great. The pie top did seem a little overbaked though. The steak mince, covered in rich and delicious brown gravy, was delightful in every bite, although I wish there was more meat to sink my teeth into. I felt the pie hit the right note of being savoury but not to the point where the sodium is overpowering your tastebuds and forcing you to immediately quench your thirst.

McDonald’s stated that the recipe and production of the Georgie Pie pies is exactly the same as it was eons ago BUT it left out an ingredient, for better or for worse - Monosodium glutamate, otherwise known as MSG. I don’t know if this impacts on the taste that much but being someone who tries to avoid flavour enhancer ingredients, I welcomed the exclusion.

For me, the most disappointing thing with the pie was the cheese. It looked like and tasted like processed cheese which I absolutely despise! I mean, when you’re paying a premium price tag of $4.50 (a far cry from its $1.00 and $3.50 pies back in the day), you would expect proper, unprocessed cheese sliced off the mellow yellow block of creamy goodness! But no, instead I’m treated to cheap, pale-yellow ‘plastic cheese’ that you find in budget/cheap brands of pie (Think of the cheese in Irvines’ pies, for example). I understand McDonald’s wanting to stick to the original recipe but it could have been updated with unprocessed cheese in the pie’s filling.

  After eating the pie, I was done – that was it. There was no “OMG! THAT WAS AMAZING! I WANT MORE!” moment in my mind or stomach. I was a little disappointed in the pie. I expected more for some reason. The problem of hyping up expectations is that reality often falls short of these expectations, leaving a gap of dissatisfaction.

In summary, Georgie Pie is back, for better or for worse. Is it worth the $4.50 price? No. You’ll find much better value (and taste) at your local bakery and even at your local supermarket. It’s worth a try out of curiosity but that’s all it is –a curiosity, nothing more. I don’t see myself being a repeat purchaser of these pies. If other flavours do come out, I’ll definitely have a think about trying the other flavours.  While I don’t have extremely fond memories of Georgie Pie compared to other people, I do remember going to its store (which is now a pet store) and eating its pies across various flavours. Perhaps its return is overhyped where McDonald’s is preying on people’s sentimentality of a long-forgotten brand to get them into their stores to hopefully not just buy the pies but  other products as well (bait and switch tactic you could say).

Will the new Georgie Pie return to its former glory days? I don’t think so unfortunately. Gone are the days of one dollar pies, two-pie combos, and an actual store with a fun playground for the kids. With new eating patterns, lifestyle changes and economics, it’s hard to see Georgie Pie returning to its success prior to McDonald’s acquisition of its franchise.

But it’s nice to see an old friend again.

Georgie Pie is currently only available to a few McDonald restaurants in Auckland and the Waikato region (with plans to expand the Georgie Pie pilot scheme to other provinces over time).
