recent changes that have brought me so much joy
1. Routine de-cluttering
One of the biggest mistakes I've made in my semi-minimalist/decluttering "journey" is thinking that I can get rid of everything that doesn't serve all at once.
Which in itself is the product of a whole other, more foundational mistake: thinking that I can know immediately what doesn't serve me and then get rid of it.
With a few exceptions, de-cluttering does not really have to be a massive, intervention-style purge. I've had a much more gentle, yet persistent time with monthly and quarterly unburdening.
Putting things in a bag, out of sight and then revisiting once I realize I never reached for those things once. Emptying out one storage container or a corner of my closet or my bedroom to the point where there's more breathing room, a little bit of absence. And then letting myself adjust to the space, to how it feels to be lightweight and maybe even free.
2. Buying a timed safe + a safety deposit box ... for my devices
Okay here me out:
KitchenSafe makes these great timed safes that you can set for minutes, hours and even days when you want to prohibit your access to something. Generally something that feeds into your bad habits: sweets, snacks, alcohol, overspending ... whatever can fit in the box, you can lock away and free up the mental space you would have ordinarily spend
If it can fit.
I have a chunky Dell laptop, very wide. The biggest timed safe I could find did not accommodate this laptop, not to mention the other things like my smart TV remote, my smartphone, my mp3 player.
This is where the safety deposit box comes in!
My laptop, my smartphone, and my remote all fit inside the deposit box. I use the keys to lock it up. Then the keys go into the smallest timed safe I could find. And now every possible distraction has been neutralized. And y'all ...
The freedom is just incredible. Not to sound overdramatic, but I'm deadass.
Before I tried it, I knew how the basic principle would work in theory: if you try to resist a temptation, you have to commit a lot of precious mental energy to that resistance; conversely, if you just remove the temptation as any kind of viable option, you don't have to deal with the decision fatigue that comes with resistance.
I knew this in theory, but it was all that and so much more in practice. With my TV, my phone and my computer all put out of reach (typically for the 8+ hours of my workday plus the hours of 9:30 pm to 6 am to give my sleep hygiene half a chance), I've begun to embrace a much more present existence. For example:
Focusing more on my workday, improving my productivity and my colleague relations.
Writing in my notebooks again, brainstorming, writing stream-of-consciousness, etc. without running the gauntlet of trying to do it on my laptop where distractions abound
Reading my e-reader and physical books again! This has been the biggest and maybe best shift. Getting to read all the stuff in my library without trying to do it on (you guessed it) my laptop. No more competing noise near me, just me and my book.
Getting back into "single-use" devices, i.e. my e-reader and my mp3 player. I've never been diagnosed with any kind of attention deficit or adhd or anything like that, but I routinely will be using 3 to 4 devices at once for no conceivable reason. Now though, even if I choose to stay plugged in, it feels really good to be on one frequency instead of like 5.
Ordering out less. My Grubhub-ordering had become a bit of a reflex, especially in the mornings. I've gotten into morning meal prep now to give myself a better prepared option. This in addition to my phone being fully out of reach has curbed my fast food and overspending by A LOT
I'm building up the nerve to attempt a true dopamine fast, over a two day weekend up to a whole week.
3. Respecting the enclosure
I'm reading this book on writing (as I often do) and one of the first major tasks in the book is to create your "writing enclosure". Whatever you need your setting to be to produce your best work, to get down to business quickly and comfortably - build it into your enclosure.
I'm in a fluid, shared living situation, so I tend to draft my laptop all over the place. Now instead, I keep my laptop set up, along with my USB keyboard, mouse, and adjustable tray - no more cramped typing! no more stiff neck from looking down! So simple, practically a no-brainer, but its been so effective.

The Social Dilemma
The Social Dilemma is a 2020 documentary-drama that explores the rise of social media and the damage it has caused to society. It focuses on how social media exploits and manipulates its users for financial gain through surveillance capitalism and data mining. It goes into depth on how social media's design is meant to nurture an addiction, manipulate its use in politics, and many more. The docudrama also examines the serious issue of social media's effect on our mental health. It was able to effectively relay the message it wanted to portray because it featured interviews with many former employees, executives, and other professionals from top tech companies and social media platforms such as Facebook, Google, Pinterest, Apple, and many more. The interviewees provided their first-hand experiences of working in and around the tech industry. They stated that social media platforms and big tech companies have been instrumental in providing positive change for society however, these platforms have also caused problematic social, political, and cultural consequences. You would be able to learn a lot from this docudrama and it is one to watch.
The role of technology and social media in my life is huge. Ever since I started using technology and social media I can say that it has really changed how I live my life compared to when I wasn’t using it. It has definitely had an impact on the way I live and I could say that it has made life easier especially at a time like this where we are spending most of our time just at our homes. Social media and technology help us better and easily connect with our family, friends, and loved ones who are far away from us or can’t visit because of the ongoing pandemic. Honestly, I use social media and technology from the moment I wake up until I am going to bed. So going on without using my gadgets for non-educational purposes is extremely hard for me and I am pretty sure I will only last a few hours and not even a day. Moreover, yes I identify with the portrayals of young people using social media in the documentary. I could say that I relate with Ben and Isla. I could relate with Ben because just like him I always use my phone. In the dinner scene in the documentary, when his phone got a notification while it was in the Kitchensafe, he asked if he could just see who it was and this is also how I am. I always wait for notifications on my phone and I always want to check them right away. With Isla, I relate with her because just like her, comments and likes on my social media posts are important to me.
After doing a SWOT-PEST analysis on myself, I could say that the P-E-S factors heavily influence my life. However, out of the three, I believe that the S factor is the most influential. What society thinks and whatever is trending is usually something that I try to incorporate in my life all the time that is why I think societal factors influence my life the most. Political and economic factors also affect how I live and how I see the things happening around me. Furthermore, I believe that the technological factor heavily influences both the P-E-S and O-T factors in my life. Almost everything happening around us right now is done online and virtually. Even our classes are done online right now because of the ongoing pandemic. During this pandemic, we could really see how technology is truly an important and big aspect of our lives. It heavily influences the P-E-S factors happening around us and it has really changed the way we live our lives. Additionally, I also saw that there are a lot of similarities between my personal assessment and what the documentary says about the influence of technology on our lives. Technology’s influence may not be the best, but it also depends on how we use it and if we use it with good intentions.
The future use of technology would be very huge for all of us. We could all see how technology has already changed the way we live during this time of the pandemic and it would continue changing our lives. In the future, technology could be used in all the things that we do and we would be living in a virtual world. I think that technology in the future would be used to create positive change in our societies. I think businesses and politicians will still continue to use technology the same way they are using it now because it has been proven to be effective. Even though some of them use technology unethically, people are still not aware of this and this is troubling. That is why ordinary citizens could become more aware of this and push back against it by learning more about technology and how to use it properly. Once they are more knowledgeable, they would be able to spread this information to their fellow peers and this could help in pushing back against unethical use of technology.
There are specific quotes from the documentary “ The Social Dilemma” that really caught my attention and here are my thoughts on each one:
"If you’re not paying for the product, then you’re the product."
This quote struck me the most and it made me really think about how social media has been manipulating us. It was very eye-opening to me because I realized that even though we aren’t paying for anything for these specific applications/products, they are still earning through us because of the data that they have about us. That is how we become the products in this technology-heavy world.
"There are only two industries that call their customers 'users': illegal drugs and software."
This quote really got me to think about how illegal drugs and social media actually has a lot of similarities. Social media and illegal drugs are both addicting and both have negative effects on our lives. It is often hard for us to stop checking our social media accounts and sometimes this is all that we do in a day. This could be very bad for our health just like how illegal drugs harm us. Additionally, this also made me reflect on the time I spend using my phone and social media as it could already be affecting how I live my life in a negative way.
"Social media is a marketplace that trades exclusively in human futures."
This quote made me feel like I have been used by these certain social media applications just for their own gain. They use our data to gain profit and most people aren’t even aware of this. We have to raise awareness on this and even hold some businesses accountable because a lot of them use technology unethically. They have to learn how to make profit responsibly and ethically.
"The very meaning of culture is manipulation."
This quote just like the one above also made me feel like I have been manipulated and used by these social media applications. It certainly has affected how I see and will use social media. I will try to be even more careful with all the things I do especially on social media. This quote also made me realize how big social media has impacted our lives and that it is already part of our culture. Social media is very deceiving and we should be careful.
