Mensah Ruling Leads to Wauwatosa Protests through my Neighborhood

I have only lived in Wauwatosa for about a year now, but I've always known the city to be a safe, peaceful community. On October 7th, I witnessed happenings in the city that completely blew my mind. My day started in Sussex where I tend bar at a local restaurant. I knew the decision of the Mensah shooting was to be announced around 3pm, so I had one of the TVs on a local news channel. The ruling was finally announced closer to 4pm, and as people (and businesses) had anticipated, Officer Mensah was cleared and no charges were filed. The news station then switched over to a live broadcast from Wauwatosa City Hall where you could already see many people gathering.

Fast forward to 9:00pm, when I am on my way back home to Wauwatosa from work. My drive was a lot more quiet than I had thought it would be, which was definitely alright with me. I managed to get home without seeing much of any protesting, none in fact. If anything, just larger amounts of cars on the street than usual for that time on a Wednesday.

At around 9:50pm, I was walking through my living room on the way to the kitchen when I noticed the blinds to my picture window were still open. If ever there was a night to close them, it was that night, so I approached my window to find a convoy of 9 police vehicles (SUVs, paddy wagons, and larger box trucks) parked at the end of my street. Being the second last house from the corner, this felt awfully close by. They sat there parked with their engines running for about 15 minutes. The drivers of the 4 large box trucks then got out of their vehicles and pounded on the sides of the trucks. The back doors of these trucks opened, and about 10-12 police officers piled out of each one onto the street where they started to put on riot gear. Bullet-proof vests, facial shields, and other paddings were put on, finished off by a large protective shield for each officer to hold.

This was a pretty alarming site, because I live smack in the middle of a super quiet neighborhood. I wondered if they have picked this location because it was a safe place away from the protesting where they could get ready or if something was heading towards my neighborhood.

They finished getting ready and hung around for about ten more minutes when I heard someone shout "we're heading out." They piled back into their vehicles and slowly pulled off, heading North. Not 3 minutes later, I hear chanting coming from the Menomonee River Parkway. I then began to see upwards of probably 100 protesters walking in the street, as well as about 50 cars driving slowly in the street next to them, beeping their horns to draw attention to themselves.

I was relieved to see that while they did choose my block to turn down, they made a right turn towards Burleigh, instead of a left turn towards my house. I had never seen anything quite like this so up-close and personal. From what I could see and hear, they were not causing any harm to properties they passed by. Unfortunately, the group that went through North Ave (whether it was the same group or a different group is unclear) did damage multiple homes and businesses, throwing bricks through windows. I went through to see the damage the next morning, and all I could say was that it was a sad day in the Wauwatosa community.

As historians have been quick to point out, the dearth of large-scale slave revolts suggests that in the United States slave resistance often manifested itself in intransigent behavior. If resistance in the United Sates was rarely politically-oriented, consciously collective, or violently revolutionary, it was generally individualistic and aimed at maintaining what the slaves, master, and overseer had, in the course of their relationships, perceived as an acceptable level of work, shelter, food, punishment, and free time. Slaves may have thought about overthrowing the system of slavery but the odds against them were so overwhelming that the best most could hope for was survival with a modicum of dignity. Slave resistance was aimed at maintaining what seemed to all concerned to be the status quo. Bondwomen, like bondmen, were adept in inventing schemes and excuses to get their own way. After her mistress died, Alcey, the cook on the Burleigh plantation in Virginia, decided she no longer wanted to work in the kitchen. When her request to be transferred to the field was ignored, she found another way to make her desire known. “She systematically disobeyed orders and stole or destroyed the greater part of the provisions given to her for the table.” When that failed “she resolved to show more plainly that she was tired of the kitchen” : “Instead of getting chickens for dinner from the coop, as usual, she unearthed from some corner an old hen that has been sitting for six weeks and served her up as a fricassee!” Alcey achieved her objective and was sent to the field the following day without even so much as a reprimand. While some Southern whites called such behavior “rascality,” slaves understood it to be an effective form of resistance. For instance, Josiah Henson knew Dinah, a fellow slave, to be as “clear-witted, as sharp and cunning as a fox.” Yet, she purposely acted the fool or idiot in order “to take advantage of her mistress.” According to Henson, “When the latter said, ‘Dinah, go and do your work,’ she would reply with a laugh, ‘Yes, yes; when I get ready,’ or ‘Go do it yourself.’ Sometimes she would scream out, ‘I won’t; that’s a lie - catch me if you can’; and then she would take to her heels and run away.” Henson revealed Dinah was always doing odd things, but she escaped the whipping other slaves received because her mistress thought she was an idiot. [...] Truancy seems to have been the way many slave women reconciled their desire to flee and their need to stay. Studies of female runaways demonstrate that females made the most likely truants because they were more concerned about breaking family ties. [...] For many women truancy became a way of life. While Nellie, a slave of Mr. Elderet in Louisiana, hid in a corn crib for three days, other spent a much longer time away from the plantation. Such a woman was Celeste, another Louisiana slave who, determined not to be beaten by the overseer, built her own rude hut from dead branches and camouflaged it with leaves of palmetto on the edge of a swamp not far from her master’s residence. Every evening she returned to the plantation for food and lived like this for the better part of a summer.
