Commercial Hood Cleaning | A Critical Step in Kitchen Safety and Efficiency
Running a commercial kitchen requires maintaining cleanliness, safety, and efficiency to ensure smooth operations and regulatory compliance. One often-overlooked aspect of kitchen maintenance is commercial hood cleaning, a service essential for preventing fire hazards and ensuring optimal kitchen performance. In this blog, we’ll delve into what commercial hood cleaning entails, its benefits, and why regular maintenance is crucial for any food service establishment.
What is Commercial Hood Cleaning?
Commercial hood cleaning refers to the process of thoroughly cleaning the exhaust systems in commercial kitchens, including hoods, filters, ducts, and fans. The primary goal is to remove grease buildup and other residues that accumulate over time during cooking. A clean commercial kitchen hood system ensures proper ventilation, reduces fire risks, and keeps the kitchen environment healthy and efficient.
Why is Kitchen Hood Cleaning Important?
Fire Hazard Prevention: Grease and oil residue in kitchen hoods are highly flammable. Regular cleaning removes these deposits, significantly reducing the risk of grease fires.
Regulatory Compliance: Health and safety regulations in most regions mandate periodic cleaning of kitchen exhaust systems. Failure to comply can result in fines or even the closure of the establishment.
Improved Air Quality: Clean kitchen hoods improve ventilation, reducing smoke, odors, and harmful contaminants in the air, creating a better environment for staff and customers.
Enhanced Efficiency: A clean hood system ensures that exhaust fans work efficiently, saving energy and maintaining consistent airflow in the kitchen.
Prolonged Equipment Lifespan: Regular maintenance prevents grease buildup from damaging components of the exhaust system, saving money on repairs and replacements.
The Commercial Hood Cleaning Process
Professional commercial kitchen hood system cleaning involves a systematic approach to ensure all components are thoroughly cleaned and functional:
Inspection: The process begins with inspecting the kitchen hood system to assess grease buildup and identify any potential issues.
Preparation: The area around the hood is covered to protect appliances and surfaces. The system is shut down, and filters are removed for separate cleaning.
Degreasing: Powerful, industry-grade degreasers are applied to remove grease and grime from the hoods, ducts, and fans.
Scraping and Washing: Specialists use tools and high-pressure washing equipment to eliminate stubborn deposits, ensuring the exhaust system is spotless.
Polishing and Reassembly: After cleaning, the hood is polished to restore its appearance, and all components are reassembled.
Final Inspection: The system is inspected again to ensure everything is functioning correctly and meets safety standards.
How Often Should You Schedule Commercial Hood Cleaning?
The frequency of commercial hood cleaning depends on the type of cooking and volume of usage in your kitchen:
High-Volume Kitchens: Fast-food restaurants or establishments using fryers and grills daily should schedule cleaning quarterly.
Moderate-Volume Kitchens: Restaurants with moderate cooking activities should consider bi-annual cleaning.
Low-Volume Kitchens: Facilities with light cooking activities, such as churches or seasonal operations, may only require annual cleaning.
Regular inspections by a certified professional can help determine the optimal cleaning schedule for your kitchen.
Benefits of Hiring Professionals for Commercial Hood Cleaning
While some tasks can be handled by in-house staff, commercial hood cleaning should always be done by professionals. Here’s why:
Expertise: Professionals are trained to clean all parts of the exhaust system, including hard-to-reach areas.
Compliance Assurance: Certified cleaners ensure your kitchen meets local fire and health regulations.
Thorough Cleaning: Advanced tools and techniques used by professionals guarantee a deeper clean than DIY methods.
Time and Cost Efficiency: Outsourcing this task saves time for your staff and avoids costly repairs due to improper cleaning.
Signs Your Kitchen Hood System Needs Cleaning
Grease dripping from the hood.
Excessive smoke or odors in the kitchen.
Reduced efficiency of exhaust fans.
Visible grease buildup on filters or ducts.
An unusual increase in kitchen temperature.
Commercial Kitchen Hood Repair Service Near Me
Besides cleaning, regular maintenance and timely repairs of your kitchen hood system are equally essential. A malfunctioning hood system can disrupt kitchen operations and pose safety risks. If you’re searching for a commercial kitchen hood repair service near me, here’s what to look for:
Certified Technicians: Ensure the service provider has certified and experienced technicians.
Comprehensive Services: Choose a company offering both cleaning and repair services to simplify maintenance.
Emergency Repairs: Opt for a provider with quick response times for urgent repairs.
Preventive Maintenance Plans: Regular check-ups can help prevent costly breakdowns.
DIY vs. Professional Hood Cleaning
While in-house staff can handle surface cleaning, deeper cleaning of the exhaust system requires specialized tools and expertise. Attempting to clean ducts or fans without proper knowledge can lead to incomplete cleaning or damage to the system. For thorough and safe cleaning, always rely on professional services.
Tips for Maintaining a Clean Kitchen Hood System
Regular Filter Cleaning: Clean or replace filters every 1-2 weeks to prevent grease buildup.
Daily Wipe-Downs: Wipe the exterior of the hood daily to maintain cleanliness.
Schedule Professional Cleaning: Stick to a regular cleaning schedule for the entire system.
Monitor Ventilation Performance: Check exhaust fans regularly for unusual noise or reduced efficiency.
Choosing the Right Commercial Hood Cleaning Service
When selecting a commercial hood cleaning company, consider the following:
Certifications and Licensing: Verify the company is certified and follows industry standards.
Experience: Look for a provider with extensive experience in cleaning various types of commercial kitchen hood systems.
References and Reviews: Check reviews or ask for references from other restaurant owners.
Pricing: Ensure the service is cost-effective without compromising quality.
Additional Services: Some companies offer bundled services like hood repairs and maintenance, which can save time and money.
Conclusion
Commercial hood cleaning is not just a regulatory requirement but an essential aspect of running a safe and efficient kitchen. Regular cleaning and maintenance of your commercial kitchen hood system help prevent fire hazards, improve air quality, and ensure smooth operations. Whether you run a small café or a large-scale restaurant, partnering with a professional cleaning and repair service is a smart investment.
Search for a commercial kitchen hood repair service near me today to ensure your kitchen remains compliant, safe, and efficient. Don’t let grease buildup threaten your establishment’s reputation and safety—schedule a professional hood cleaning service and keep your kitchen running like a well-oiled machine!

“The Most Average Cup of Tea.”
What if the darklighter, Jimmy got the wrong house? What if instead of the Charmed ones’ home he orbed into their cousin’s house? Will the encounter with the eccentric witch lead to new experiences or will they end up destroying each other?
Warnings: Near-death experience, secrets and lies, dissing English tea and the Beatles, damage of property
~
It had been a stressful day, heck it had been a stressful month, a stressful year, yet they had made it through. The Charmed ones, her cousins, Maggie, Macy and Mel had grown into their powers, slowly and steadily. Their mother would’ve been so proud of the women they turned out to be. Marisol had entrusted them to her, trusting that she’d be able to help them learn about magic, just like she (Marisol) and her own mother taught her when she was younger.
After an exhausting day at the headquarters, she went back to her own house, relieved to be home. Don’t get her wrong, the girls are wonderful to be around, but sometimes...it can get a bit much and they all needed some breathing space.
She lived in a house a few houses away from the Vera residence. Her house was almost as big as the Charmed ones’ house, it’s layout was similar as well. With vines growing up the walls, blooming with flowers and large spacious rooms that she used for her various hobbies. She also had a garden behind the house, full of herbs both exotic and local that she used in potions.
After today, she was just exhausted and decided that she would let off some steam in her house, relax, take a bubble bath, pamper herself.
She was in her kitchen, the windows open as a cool breeze brushed against her face. Her kettle of lemon grass tea was on the stove, smoking slightly as the water inside heated up.
The wind-chimes on the window tinkled in the breeze as her tea finished boiling. Taking it off the stove she slowly pored it into her favorite mug before walking towards the living room.
As she padded towards the living room she sensed something. She barely had a moment to react before a darklighter popped into existence, throwing his knife at her. She ducked quickly, her favorite mug shattering as it hit the floor.
“Hey! That was my favorite mug!” She yelled at the hooded figure, yet with no regard for her mug, he stepped over it, chasing after her. How disrespectful, honestly.
She gave chase around the house till she reached her bedroom, where she stashed some emergency potions. She found the one she was looking for.
Quickly finding the darklighter in her living room she smashed the bottle at his feet and said an incantation, creating a dome-like barrier to contain him.
Cautiously walking towards him, she asked, “Who are you?”
No reply came from him. He kept banging the dome when that didn’t seem to work he tried orbing out but was unable to as the dome interfered with his powers.
“Okay, the very least you could do is tell me your name, because you know, you just tried to kill me and it’s quite impolite for one to not introduce themselves after such a dramatic entry. I mean, it’ll cost a fortune in repairs, honestly you people have no care for interior decoration.”
“Jimmy.”
“Hmm?”
“My name. It’s Jimmy.”
“Well then, Jimmy, what brings you to my witch-y tavern? Well, apart from dicing me up and serving me to whichever master that sent you. Which reminds me, who sent you?”
He once again didn’t answer, tilting his head at me as if he was wondering if she was being brave or simply stupid.
“Well, since you’re less than inclined to answer, what’ll you have?”
“What?” He asked, irritated.
“Well, since you’re gonna be here for a while, I have to give you something to eat, don’t I? My mother didn’t raise a bad hostess. So, what’ll you have? Tea? Coffee? Eggnog? Maybe a snickers, because we all know you’re not yourself when you’re hungry,” she said, chuckling
“Are you an idiot? I just tried to kill you and you’re acting like everything’s fine. Heck you’re even offering me biscuits and tea?!”
“So, Jim-Jams it is! I’ve always liked those! The jammy deliciousness at the center is the best part!”
“Great. Of all the witches I could get trapped by, I get the crazy one with an obsession for bad puns and biscuits.”
“Oh loosen up my murderous friend. So, what do darklighters do on their down time or is it a full time gig?” She asked cheerfully, passing a tray of tea and a plate of Jim-Jams.
He sat cross-legged on the floor, observing the tray before pushing it away slightly, suspicious of the food being poisoned.
“What did you put in this?” He asked gruffly.
“Well, it’s lemongrass tea. It was what I made, before you so kindly barged in here. Which reminds me, why are you here? Besides the obvious.”
“You’re a witch. I kill witches. It’s not that complicated.”
“Perhaps, or perhaps it’s because of a certain curly haired charmed sister?” At this, he quickly whipped his face towards me, staring at me with wide eyes.
“How did I know? Please, as much as the charmed ones are powerful they’re not as well-read as I am, especially after I got my hands some of the Elder’s books, plus with Harry sprouting flowery feelings for Macy it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that you do too. Only you’re probably more likely to act on those feelings,” she said, taking a large sip of her tea, sighing in content, “A word of advice, though. Macy adores her sisters as you probably know, so she’d hate for anyone to harm them. Anyone. So. it’d be...best to not harm her sisters.”
“I didn’t ask for love advice from a witch,” he said venomously.
“Yet you love one. Ironic isn’t it. Like a lion falling for a lamb. But Macy is no lamb, so that’s inaccurate. Like a lion falling for a-a something that’s opposite to it but not weak. Whatever. Anyway, you get the point.”
Sighing in frustration, the darklighter drank the tea she gave him.
‘To hell with it, even death is better than conversing with this crazy woman,’ he thought.
She watched him drink the tea with a smile on her face.
“Once again, what brings you to my witch-y lair?”
“I was trying to find information about where the charmed ones have hidden their home,” he said without a thought before covering his hands with his mouth.
“Why did I say that? What did you put in this tea?!”
“Oh, a dash of truth serum. Well, the Harry Potter buffs would call it Veritaserum. Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?”
“You said it wasn’t poisoned!” He exclaimed in a high pitch.
“Technically, it isn’t poisoned. This just loosens your tongue a bit. Think of it like tequila but with without the dizzy high, the hangover, the smell and you acting like a fool.”
The darklighter sighed, sipping on the tea. Might as well drink all of it so he could eventually forget the strange witch.
“It’s a personal recipe of mine. Doesn’t have the effects of you forgetting this conversation, so relax dear darklighter because our conversation will be with you for a long while yet!”
~
He was pouting. No, he was brooding. The witch outside the barrier had gone to put their cups away. She was certainly unlike any other witch he’d encountered. Even Macy ran away from him when she realized who he was, what he was yet she didn’t. To be fair, she trapped him in a dome and fed him truth serum but that was certainly better than being poisoned and dead.
“Are you ever going to let me go?”
Contemplating for a few moments she answered, “Eventually. If you vow not to harm me or kill innocent witches.”
“You can’t keep me here forever. Eventually the barrier will come down. And about those witches you fight so valiantly to protect, the so called ‘innocent’ witches are few and far between. Everyone has done evil, especially you and your beloved charmed ones.”
Displeased with his answer, she turned away from him.
“A word of advice, little witch. Everyone responds to fear. It’s better to be feared than respected.”
“The Elders tried that route, you know? And where did that lead them? We’re building a dynasty, one that will be fair, not just to witches but to the beings of other species as well.”
“A naive dream from a crazy witch. Eventually the weeds of corruption will sprout and then what’ll happen to your so called ‘dynasty’?”
Wordlessly she turned way, unable to answer him.
~
Eventually she did let him go, but only after he promised not to harm her and vice versa.
She thought that’d be the last of what she saw of the darklighter in a some-what non violent context, but she was wrong.
Apparently her Jim-Jams and lemongrass tea drew him in so much so that he popped in at random intervals for tea.
“Why do you keep coming back?” she once asked.
“Because I can’t find an average cup of tea in this disgusting place and because you’re obligated to serve me free tea in recompense for poisoning me the first time.”
“Oh really?” She laughed.
“Really,” he said deadly serious. “I believe you’re familiar with the phrase ‘A Lannister always pays his debts’, well, ‘A darklighter always collects his debts’.”
“Did you jus- Did you just make a Game of Thrones reference?!” She asked, oddly proud.
“Maybe,” he said, avoiding eye-contact and sipping his tea.
“You’ve been watching the serials I gave you a list of! Oh, I’m so proud of you, old man!” She exclaimed, excited.
“I’m not old,” he mumbled, slightly offended.
“Please, you’re probably older than Moses himself with the way you walk with a staff up your-”
“I think that’s enough tea for today, crazy witch,” he said before quickly orbing away.
“Hey! I prefer the term ‘eccentric’,” she yelled at the air.
~
She’d always told him to send a warning before he randomly popped in but he always told her that he liked to ‘keep her on her toes’. That’s entirely what landed them in this predicament in the first place.
Her favourite (and only) cousins dropped by for her infamous afternoon tea with a twist. She’d been planning this for weeks, determined to give the Charmed sisters a normal afternoon after all the mess they had to deal with on an almost daily basis but apparently one event-free afternoon was not fated for the four.
In her haste to prepare everything for their afternoon tea she’d forgotten to tell her prickly neighborhood darklighter that she’d be hosting guests that day.
~
Mel picked up one of the adorable fruit tarts, popping one in her mouth, enjoying the tart taste of the strawberry-filled pastry.
It was Macy’s first afternoon tea, her eyes were filled with light as she took a bite of one of the tarts, exclaiming, “Y/N! This is delicious! I didn’t know you could bake!”
“Well, a witch’s gotta have secrets. That’s how you keep them guessing,” she said with a slight chuckle.
“Oh you haven’t even gotten to the best part!” Maggie squealed.
“There’s more?” Macy asked, eyeing the table full of finger-sandwiches, tarts and tiny cakes.
“Of course! It’s not called ‘afternoon tea with a twist’ for nothing!” Maggie said.
“Well, what’s the twist?” Macy asked, unable to contain her curiosity.
“Patience, Mace. You’ll find out soon enough. In the mean time, have you tried the mini-cakes? They’re to die for!” Mal soothed.
Y/N came out of the kitchen, a triumphant look on her face and in her hands was a rather large cake.
Placing it in the empty space in the center of the table she cleared her throat. Dramatically introducing the cake she said, “May I present thee, my Coquito Tres Leches!!!”
“Wait, so you’re telling me, you combined Coquito, which is an incredible drink, with Tres Leches cake?!” Macy asked, excited at the prospect of tasting the cake in front of her.
“Yes! And the honor of the first and the biggest piece goes to you, Macy!” She announced dramatically.
“I shall gladly accept thy gracious offer,” Macy said, accepting the large slice of cake.
“Hey! Why don’t we get the largest piece?!” Maggie asked, pouting slightly.
“Because you’ve always gotten the largest piece and since this is Macy’s first afternoon tea, she will have the biggest piece.”
Just as Macy dug her fork into her slice of cake the witches felt a surge of power in the living room.
Looking towards the intruder they saw Jimmy with his hood up in all his darklighter glory. Looking up he was momentarily surprised to see the Charmed ones.
His moment of hesitation was all the Charmed ones needed to jump into action. Macy threw a fireball at him which he was able to dodge. In defence he threw a dagger at the Charmed ones. Mel was not fast enough to stop it but before either parties could react Y/N stood between the two.
She felt the dagger pierce through her, looking Jimmy in the eye as she stumbled to the ground.
The Charmed ones were in shock, watching the woman who had been almost an elder sister to them be taken down so easily.
Jimmy ran towards the fallen witch, desperately cradling her body as he begged, “No, no, no, no, no, no. You can’t die. Please, I didn’t mean to.”
“Hey, I always said, you’d be the death of me,” she joked morbidly.
“No, you can’t die. I won’t allow it,” Jimmy declared.
“Hah, even in death you’re so bossy,” she teased breathlessly, the green-tinted poison rapidly spreading through her veins.
“Well, a darklighter always collects his debts and who would make me average tea after you’re gone?” He asked rhetorically, with glossy eyes, trying to get her to hold on.
“Jim-Jam?”
“Yes?”
“Kitchen cabinet. Top Shelf. Purple healing potion. Drop it into the wound after you remove this blasted dagger,” she instructed seriously.
Snapping out of her daze Mel quickly grabbed the potion from the cabinet, cautiously kneeling next to the darklighter.
“You- And him?! Bu- But HOW?! And WHEN?!” Maggie sputtered.
“Maggie now’s not the time,” Mel said.
Removing the dagger she saw the wound infected with darklighter poison. She quickly poured the potion over the wound.
For a few minutes, nothing happened as Y/N seemed to grow weaker as the poison seemed to spread quicker than before
“What?! Why isn’t it working?! Can’t you do something?!” Macy yelled at the darklighter.
Bowing his head, he shook it dejectedly.
“There is no cure for the poison,” he said.
The Charmed ones felt their hearts break as they watched their newly departed cousin.
Suddenly they heard her gasp for air. She opened her eyes looking at the darklighter. Grinning she said, “You’re not getting rid of me that easily Jim-Jam.”
“B-But how? The poison is not supposed to have any antedote.”
“That’s for me to know and for you to never find out. Remember you still have a master.”
“Ehem. Jim-Jam?” Macy asked, raising an eyebrow at the two.
“It’s a long story,” Y/N said, trying to avoid the uncomfortable topic.
“Well it’s a good thing we’ve got all afternoon,” Mel said with a wicked smirk.
~
After Y/N explained everything, the Charmed ones sat on the couch in shock.
Jimmy sat at the kitchen table, devouring the Coquito Tres Leches cake.
“So, you’ve been-been meeting him behind our backs? How could you?” Maggie asked.
“Yeah, and what exactly are you two?” Macy asked, befundelled.
“Friends.”
“Enemies,” they answered at the same time.
“Ehem. We’re enemies who have tea together and do not kill each other,” Y/N answered.
“Which reminds me. This is delicious, why haven’t you made this for me before?” The darklighter asked with a mouthful of cake.
“Because, you usually drop by for tea and biscuits not decadent cake, plus it’s only made for special occasions,” she answered.
“Is my arrival in this hovel not a special occasion?” Jimmy asked, cockily.
“No. And my house is NOT a hovel! It’s a tastefully decorated witch cave,” she answered matter-of-factly.
“A witch cave?” Jimmy laughed.
“Yes. Batman has a Bat cave, I have a witch cave. Simple,” she told him.
He rolled his eyes at her before slicing another piece of cake.
“He kills witches. Innocent witches! How could you, Y/N?!” Mel screamed, outraged.
“Look, he turned up at my house intent to kill me, okay? So we have a deal in place. He doesn’t kill me, I can’t kill him and I give him tea and desserts.”
“So you feed his sweet tooth in order to live?” Maggie asked.
“I know it’s weird but it kinda works.”
“Unbelieveable.”
“How did you manage to cure the poison? I mean, we’ve been looking for a cure for weeks, or have you been lying about that too?”
“I-uh,” she looked back at Jimmy before casting a dome of silence around them.
“Okay, now he can’t hear us.”
“How do you know?” Mel asked.
“Watch this,” she said, “The Beatles suck, the best tea is Southern Sweet tea not English Breakfast tea and the right way to make tea is with a microwave not a kettle.”
They looked at Jimmy but he had no reaction.
“Told you. Anyway, to answer your question....I have been experimenting with some black amber...”
“Y/N! You know that stuff is powerful!”
“I know, I know but I thought that since it enhanced your powers it might improve the potency of potions. And I was right. It counteracted the darklighter poison almost immediately.”
“But how?” Macy asked.
“The darklighter poison was created with the leaves of the black amber tree. I figured if it could create the poison, then the sap would be able to counteract it’s effects,” she answered, shrugging.
The Charmed sisters couldn’t believe it. The woman they considered an older sister was friends with their enemy. This could either lead to something good or either one of their deaths.
“Fine,” Mel said with a serious expression.
“Fine...what?” Y/N asked her curiously.
“I don’t like what you and Jimmy got going on and I may not agree with it but I will not interfere with it.” Mel said resoloutely.
“Wha- Mel?! You can’t let her do this!”
“Maggie, she’s a grown woman and trying to stop her will be useless. All we can do is support her in her decisions and be there for her if it all goes to Hell.”
“I agree,” Macy said. “I may not understand...this but I believe in you. And who knows, maybe you’ll be able to bring him into the light.”
Y/N chuckled at that, “Maybe.”
“I just don’t want you to get hurt,” Maggie said.
“You can’t protect me from everything Mags. I will get hurt but I will get up,” she comforted.
“But what if you can’t get up?” Maggie asked sniffling at the prospect of losing her.
“I’ll always get up because I’ll always have you...,” Y/N trailed off.
“...And you’ll always have me,” Maggie completed.
“Fine. You have my support. But if that darklighter touches a strand of your perfectly styled hair, I will make him regret being born,” Maggie vowed.
“Woah there little tiger!” Y/N chuckled, “But seriously, thank you, all three of you.”
“It’s okay, Y/N. You’re family. Just never hide anything like this from us again. Okay?” Mel said.
“Okay.”
~
In the time taken for them to talk it out Jimmy orbed out of the house, leaving only one half of the giant cake she’d prepared.
The four continued with their afternoon tea after they’d cleaned up the mess they’d made during the fight.
They knew that the fight between good and evil was far from over but for that brief moment they were carefree, enjoying each other’s company.
~
Jimmy came back that evening.
“You’ve got to stop doing that!” Y/N jumped.
Jimmy laughed before saying, “If I did, how would enter your delightful ‘witch cave’?”
“By using the door? Like regular people?”
“But that’s boring. Plus, I like seeing you startled.”
“I knew you were a little sadist deep down.”
“Oh, really? How so?”
“I’ve seen your weapon collection. Kinky.”
Jimmy burst out laughing. Most people had feared his collection of blades but here was a witch who was calling them ‘kinky’.
“Anyway, how did the talk with your beloved Charmed ones go?”
“It went pretty well, they’ve agreed to let us continue...this,” she answered.
“Oh? And what is...this?”
“Enemies. Like you said.”
“Hmm. Enemies,” he said with a glint in his eyes.
“Hey Jim-Jam?”
He sighed at the nickname before answering, “Yes?”
“When I was dying, did I see you on the verge of tears?”
“I’m sure you were imagining that. I was NOT on the verge of tears.”
“Awwe! So you do care about me!” She teased.
“No I don’t. I only keep you around because you make the most average cup of tea for miles.”
Snorting she said, “Yeah, sure. Anyway, I have some leftover cake. Do-”
Before she could even complete her sentence the darklighter was already in the kitchen, munching on the slice of heaven she had prepared.
~
As time went on, the two became an incredible duo, almost able to read each other’s minds during fights. They were a fearsome together and after Harry had been separated from Jimmy the newfound autonomy allowed the darklighter to pursue anything he wanted, which included the eccentric witch who nurtured his insatiable sweet-tooth.
For years, long after the both were gone, the magic world still whispered tales about the darklighter and the witch.

Just Evan 5
First | Previous
Evan perched atop one of the many cliffs overlooking the ocean near the Beacon. It was a few days since the break up and he was far from over it. He plucked the petals off a daisy and watched as they fell into the waves below.
“He loves me, he loves me not. Yeah. Figures.”
“Oh hey!”
Evan jumped and looked up. It was the mirror that sold the rabbits.
“Haven't seen you in a bit. And where’s Fallen?”
Evan snorted. “He’s studying.”
“Oh right. He’s studying to be a mage or something.”
“He’s studying to be a boyfriendless loser is what he is.”
“Oh. You two broke up?”
“He said I was a ‘distraction’ and that he cares more about his stupid books than me. Can you fucking believe it?”
“Aww man. That sucks. I’m sorry. Hey, the next rabbit is on me, alright?”
Evan sighed. “Thanks man.”
***
Evan eventually made his way back to the clan, his heart empty, but his stomach full of rabbit blood. He was stopped abruptly by a small grey coatl.
“Fucking finally. I was looking all over for you!”
Evan tilted his head. “...Muerto?”
He was wearing a black hood which covered most of his face.
“Yeah who else?” Muerto snapped. “Look I don’t got all day, where’s Mason?”
Evan frowned. “He left.”
“Left? Left where?”
“The fucking Emperor’s Wake.”
“Mason’s in the Emperor's Wake? What the fuck is he doing there? Actually scratch that. Don’t care. Here I got you you’re fucking blood.” He tossed Evan a bag that was clearly stolen from a blood bank.
Evan read the tag and licked his lips. “O negative? Oooh you really got me the good stuff!”
“You’re fucking welcome. Inky!” The black nocturne was beside Muerto, sulking and melting slightly. “I need a portal to the Emperor’s wake. Now.”
“B-but Velvet-”
“We’ll deal with her later,” Muerto snapped. “First Mason. Now come on. Portal.”
Evan stopped admiring his gift and took a moment to watch Muerto. He noticed his breathing was uneven and he clutched his side.
“Hey, you good man?” Evan asked, but Muerto was already hopping into the portal Inkdrop had created. Inkdrop met his eyes before she entered the portal too. She was teary eyed.
“Huh. That sure was weird,” Evan shrugged. “Eh. It’s Muerto. He’ll be fine.” He held up his bag of blood so that it was eye level. “Time to have a feast!”
He flew up the spiral staircase of the tower, and instead of stopping on his floor, he was compelled to fly higher. And higher. And higher. Until he reached the top. There were only two rooms on the top floor. One was a tiny door that led into the fae Flare’s room. The other was a worn metal door.
Evan flicked his tongue. “Well I guess if I’m going to do this I better do it in style.” He turned around and flew back to the first floor, where he nabbed two wine glasses and straws from the kitchen. He then zoomed to the top of the tower and confidentiality pushed the door open.
The clan’s prison was dark and quiet save for a steady drip of water nearby. The leaky ceiling still had yet to be repaired. All of the cells were empty, except for one. Yellow eyes glowed in the dark and watched him.
“And why are you here?” A black and white skydancer moved into the light from the open door.
“Hi there Match!” Evan gave him a friendly wave and sat down in front of his cell.
The area was never meant to be a prison. Clan Ton Theon never wanted one, but one was created from necessity after Hywela and Frankenstien proved they could not be trusted after the Civil War. So a makeshift one was thrown together in the empty attic. And it remained.
“Here to mock me, mortal?” Match snarled.
“Nah. Just wanna talk and chill.”
“Yeah right. No one ever wants to just chill with me.”
Evan rolled his eyes. “Hey before you get too grumpy here, I brought you something.” He opened the blood bag and began to pour some into each glass. Match sniffed the air and his eyes widened.
“Is that…?”
“Human blood. Type O negative too.”
“H-how did you get that?”
“Muerto.”
Match snorted. “ Of course. Because you’re one of his pets.”
“Dude. Rude. Guess you don’t want any of this then.”
“Wait. You’re sharing?”
“I poured you a glass, didn’t I?” He held the glass out to Match. He stared at it for a moment and then snatched it.
“I brought straws too if you want any.”
Match was already lapping up the blood like a dog at a water bowl.
“Guess not. Cool.” He put a straw in his own and took a sip. “Now that’s some good stuff. Beats anything this planet has to offer, eh?”
Blood dribbled from Match’s lips. “But why?”
“Hmm?”
“Why’d you share? With me?”
“Because sharing is caring! And us vampires gotta stick together, right?”
Match scowled. “I hate that word.”
“Then what do you prefer? Blood sucker? Leech? Parasite? Because I like ‘vampire’ out of all the other options.”
Match didn’t respond.
“I’ve always wondered,” Evan swirled his glass, “Did you have something to do with me becoming, you know?” He showed his fangs.
Matched snorted. “As if. I didn’t have anything to do with your Curse. That was all Muerto.”
Evan frowned. “Huh. Ok. Weird coincidence I guess. What about Mason?”
“Look. Muerto was the one that cursed mortals got it? None of that was me. Muerto would throw a hissy fit, curse a few mortals and call it a day. He did it to millions, maybe billions of mortals spanning thousands of years. That’s who Muerto is. That’s what he does. He’s a careless demon. And Mason? I saw an opportunity and I took it. Muerto was an idiot for letting him hear the voices of the dead, because that meant any God of Death could speak directly into his head too. Oh Mason was so scared, so desperate. He was ready to believe anything I told him. He made it all so easy.”
Evan refilled his glass and then Match’s. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. I was there. And you would have killed Muerto but you didn’t expect Ren to save him.”
Match narrowed his eyes at Evan. “Why are you so calm? As you said, you were there. You saw what I did. I thought you were on Muerto’s side.”
Evan shrugged. “That was forever ago. It’s the long forgotten past.”
“It was only a hundred years.”
“Yeah and that’s like forever ago.”
“A hundred years is nothing to my kind. It was practically just yesterday to me.”
“Yeah well for my kind that was forever ago. No one cares about what happened over a hundred years ago.”
Match snorted. “I think history would disagree with you, mortal.”
“Ok fine. I don’t care then. Happy?”
“Really? Then why are you here talking to me and not Muerto? Or Mason. Or my brother?”
“None of them are here at the moment. But I wanted to talk to you anyway. You’re interesting. Not boring. And besides I’m starting to think maybe Muerto had it coming for him.”
Match licked blood off of his claws. “So you’re not over it. And you came running over to me because you know no one else would listen to you. Well I’ve got news for you, i’m not your friend and i’m for sure not a fucking therapist so get the fuck out of here.”
“You’re also stuck there and can’t make me leave so I’m staying right here.”
“Fucking hell.”
“So what would you have done if you were the God of Death? How would you have run things? What would have made you better than Muerto?”
“Well first of all I’m not a demon, and I’m a Solstice. So automatically that makes me fit to be a king and not him.”
“So you’d be just as shitty, huh?”
Match growled. “The throne was practically built for me! I had been training since-”
“Yeah and you have yet to actually tell me why you would make a good king.”
“I…” Match stammered.
“You don’t know either! You were so convinced that the throne and crown was yours you didn’t even consider what you’d do with that power. I bet you would have fucked over plenty of mortals just like Muerto did. It’s clear you see us as lesser than you.”
“Sh-shut up!”
“Have you done anything besides try to kill Muerto?”
“I helped Isra take down an Emperor! I saved some of the dragons in this clan! I see some worth in mortals!”
“And yet they still put you in a cage.”
Match drank the last of his blood. “They just don’t understand. These dragons didn’t get that Sepulchral needed to die.”
“Why? Muerto I can kind of get, but Sepulchral has always been nothing but kind.”
“He’s weak! He’s worthless! He brings shame to the Solstice name!”
“And you don’t?”
“Shut up!”
“If I remember correctly I’m pretty sure Badru disowned you too. Sounds like the problem was your shitty dad and not Sep.”
Match was quiet.
“And now Sep is alive and well, and you’re here.”
Match still sat in silence.
“Did you even have any friends?”
Match snapped to attention. “Of course I did! Iniquity and Rrhage-”
Evan laughed, “You thought those two were your friends?!”
“They obeyed me! They helped me!”
“They were only looking after themselves! Your plans just happened to line up with theirs! They just wanted Muerto out of the picture too. They didn’t really give a shit about you.”
“And you know this how?”
“Bro I was made a god. I got to hear about all the Underworld gossip while you were in hiding. And Iniquity and Hemorrhage? They were never your fucking friends. They would have backstabbed you if given the chance.”
“I… But…”
“Sorry to burst that bubble man,” Evan refilled each glass for the last time, the bag now empty. “So what about romance? You ever had a girlfriend or a boyfriend or a datefriend? Or are you not interested in things like that?”
Match blinked. “What? Why are you asking me that?”
“Just curious. Like I said. You’re interesting. It’s cool if you’re aromantic though. That’s totally valid.”
“Hey now I never said I was aro.”
“Then you like dudes?”
Match’s feathers poofed, “I like chicks! Alright, happy?!”
“Aw that’s kinda disappointing.”
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?!”
“So let me get this straight (heh), you’ve never had any friends or a partner because you were too busy trying to kill a little kid? And your biggest accomplishments were killing your twin brother who was only trying to protect you, and killing a big zombie dragon? Am I getting all of that correct?”
“Hey now that’s-” Match began coughing. He turned around and hacked up the blood he just drank. Evan took a step back and winced.
“Gross man. You good?”
Match turned back towards Evan, tears in his eyes. “No I’m not fucking good! I’m fucking dying alone and in pain and nobody fucking cares!”
It dawned on Evan just how skinny the dragon in front of him was.
“Haven't you been eating?”
“I have, but nothing stays down!” Match wiped his mouth. His antennae were all bent and broken. His feathers unkempt. Bags were under his eyes. His body was littered with cuts and bruises.
“Is it the shard?” Evan asked, looking at Match’s tail. There was nothing there now, but he also didn’t have a Symbol in his dragon form.
Match nodded. He shivered. “I-I think when I became a dragon it was absorbed into me. Now it’s been slowly working its way throughout my body. I don’t think I have much longer left.”
“Oh,” Evan gathered the wine glasses and the empty bag. “That’s a bummer.” He stood up and turned around.
“W-wait! Evan don’t go!” Match’s voice cracked as Evan’s claws touched the metal door. “Don’t leave me alone, please.”
“Sorry man,” Evan cracked the door open and glanced back at the yellow eyes “But you’re really bumming me out.” He walked out the door and could still hear Match begging him to come back as it slammed shut behind him.

Destiel AU - toddler!jack, mechanic!dean
“Good morning, sir!”
Dean looked up from his newspaper straight at the kid with a teddy bear. He had no idea where it came from. He was just sipping his coffee and reading the news, when some stranger toddler appeared on the seat in front of him.
“Umm, mornin'?” he greeted him, still confused.
“I have a birthday today,” said kid and grinned. Dean looked around, but nobody seemed to bother with his situation.
“Congratulations, but you shouldn't be alone here. Where's your mom?”
“In Heaven. She's watching over me, like an angel,” kid explained, and after that kicked him accidentally under the table. Dean dusted his knee off.
“And what about your dad?”
“There!” he pointed to the counter, where was standing a dark hair man in the trench coat. “He's buying birthday's milkshakes. Strawberry!”
“Yeah?” Dean relaxed a little bit, good that kid wasn't alone here. “And how old are you?”
“Four! It's more than three,” he said cheerfully. “Look, I have The Marvelous Marvin. He can talk!”
Kid showed him a teddy bear and pressed his belly. A plushie toy said: 'Hello!', his father turned around immediately and came quickly to Dean's table. He picked the kid up and spoke to him:
“Jack, I told you, don't harass people.” And then to Dean: “My apologies.”
“Nothing happened... He's a great kiddo.”
The man tried to smile, but he was too much embarrassed, so it lookes more like a grimace. Jack, on the other hand, seemed not to care about anything, playing with his teddy bear.
Dean pulled something out from his pocket and asked: “Hey, Jack, do you like stickers?”
“Yeah!”
“So, I have something for you. Happy birthday, buddy!”
It was a commercial sticker with a big text "Singer Auto Repair Shop", but there was also a picture of Chevy Impala which was what Jack noticed first.
“A car!” exclaimed Jack, putting a sticker on his teddy bear at once.
“Jack, what do you say?” reminded him his father.
“Thank you, sir!”
“You're welcome!”
The man put Jack on the seat at the next table and went back to Dean.
“I'm sorry once again, he's a little too much excited,” he excused for his son.
“Sure, nothing happened.” Dean shrugged. “I'm Dean, by the way.”
“Castiel.” They shook their hands, and Dean smiled at him.
“It's nice to meet you.”
“You too.” Cas smiled back. “I'm not gonna take more of your time. Have a nice day.”
Cas sat across of his son. The waitress had brought their milkshakes already. The kid started drinking, but a few seconds later he was talking again.
“Dad, can I try yours?”
Dean heared a chuckle, he looked at Cas and caught how he was rolling his eyes.
“They're the same, Jack.”
“Please... I have a birthday,” begged the kid with a sweet voice.
“All right.” Cas gasped, but changed their milkshakes.
“Yours is better,” admitted Jack, and Cas laughed once again.
Dean finished his coffee and walked away a few minutes later, one more time looking at them. The family picture, a lovely and cute view...
*
Cas knew shit about cars, but he was certainly sure his truck shouldn't make so weird noises.
“Crap,” he murmured. Did he say it loud? Crap! He turned to the back seats where Jack was sitting in the child chair. “You didn't hear anything, Jack.”
“That's not true! You said: crap!” said excited Jack. “Crap, crap! Crap, crap!”
Great! Now his kid expanded his vocabulary.
“I think grocery needs to wait. Somebody needs to check our car.”
“Maybe Marvin? He's a mechanic. He has a badge.” Jack pointed at the sticker on his teddy bear.
“Oh, honeybee, I think we need the other specialist, but thank Marvin for his service.”
Cas pulled out the phone to find some Auto Repair Shop on the internet when he realized that actually Marvin could help. He gave a quick look at the sticker and read an address.
*
“I have no idea how to fix a car. Sometimes I even forget to refuel it,” explained Cas to the old man with a baseball cap. He had found out earlier it’s Bobby Singer, owner of this Auto Shop. For a moment, he felt disappointment because deeply in his heart he had hoped he was going to see Dean from the milk bar again.
“I’ll call my best mechanic. We can handle it,” Bobby assured him, and after that he turned around and yelled: “Dean, we have a client, can you come here?”
Dean got out from under one of the cars. He was wearing work clothes, and his face was dirty from grease, but Cas recognized him at once. Jack, who was standing next to him, was too busy with his teddy bear to notice him.
“Oh, Cas. Hi,” said Dean, frowning with confusion. Probably he didn’t expect to see him again.
“Hello, Dean.”
“And how are you, Jack?” he asked a toddler.
“Good! Marvin took us here!”
“Yeah, so let’s see what’s wrong with a car.”
Dean opened the hood and checked the car. It didn’t take him a lot of time before he found cause of trouble.
“It's the engine...” explained Dean.
“Crap!” said Jack, and Dean looked at him surprised.
“Whoa, isn't it a big word for so little guy?”
“I'm big now! And dad taught me that!”
Cas’ cheeks turned red at once, and he mumbled: “No, I... I didn't.”
“You did, daddy. Don't you remember? Truck was broken.”
Dean chuckled, but he was not going to torture him any longer.
“Okay, I need at least half an hour. You can wait there if you want.” He pointed to a bench near a big tree.
“All right, thank you.”
Dean started working, but his eyes were heading to Cas and Jack all the time. He saw how they were talking and playing with a teddy bear, laughing all the time. They looked so happy, and Dean found himself jealous of what they had.
When he finished, he called them and Bobby. Cas paid for the repair and thanked him for help. They didn't go at once, so Dean used an opportunity to talk with him a little longer.
“He's similar to you, like Mini-Cas,” said Dean, and Cas smiled with proud.
“Actually, he's not my biological son... His mother was my very good friend, but she died in childbirth, so I took care of him,” he explained.
“What about his biological father?”
“It's my brother, but I don't know where he is. He ran away when he found out Kelly was pregnant.”
“This one,” started Bobby and patted Dean on the arm. “I kinda adopted him and his brother. And they're good men. I think I did no bad job raising them.”
“Yeah, you were always a better father to me than John.”
Bobby squeezed Dean’s shoulder, and walked away to talk with Jack. Cas looked at his son with love in his eyes.
“It must be hard, huh? Be a lonely father with a toddler?”
“Sometimes. But I've never regretted this. He's my whole life.”
After a long minute of silence, Dean decided to go one step further. He scratched a back of his neck and cleared the throat.
“Listen, Cas, I'll give you my private number...” he started, but then added quickly: “You know if something would be wrong with a car, just call me.”
Shit! It wasn't supposed to look like this... He chickened out.
“Umm, thank you,” said Cas, putting the card with his number in his coat's pocket. “Dean, one more.”
“Yeah?”
“Would it be okay if I call you on another matter?”
“Which means?”
“If I want to, for example, invite you for a milkshake?”
Dean's face brightened with a smile. So, it wasn't like he was the only one who was interested.
“Yeah... it would be okay, Cas.”
“So, I think I'll call you.”
“I will be waiting.”
Cas gave him a huge smile one more time before he went to Jack.
“Jack, we need to come home. Let's go!” He took him on his arms.
“Okay, daddy!” Jack raised his hand and waved with it. “Bye, bye, Dean!”
“See you later, buddy! Oh, and I have another sticker for you,” said Dean.
“It's like a doctor, but without needles.”
“Yeah, I'm a car doctor.”
“Cool!”
They drove away, this time without a noisy engine, and Cas thought it's a very good day.
*
Cas put Jack to bed, read him the bedtime stories and kissed his forehead. He turned the light off, but stayed there a few minutes more, just to look at his sleeping kid.
Yes, like he said before, being a single father wasn't always easy, but he would never change his life. At least not in this area. Because, of course, he would like to find somebody who could love Jack like their own son, and somebody who could love him...
Sometimes, especially in the nights like this, he felt lonely, it wasn't like he has a lot of time to meet new people, not to mention dates. That's why he went to the kitchen to make a call.
“Yeah?” asked Dean, and Cas couldn't help smile, hearing his voice.
“Hello, Dean. It's Cas. I hope I don't call too late.”
Answer came almost immediately.
“No. It's never too late.”

The Cowboy - Part 13
Summary: Leaving the city for a rural area called Blayne seemed simple enough. Your task was to convince the people to agree with selling their land for a resort redevelopment. But once there, you soon realise that your city ways are entirely different to theirs. Winning their trust was going to take some effort, and when you start to fall for a local cowboy, you wonder if you really needed Blayne more than the city life after all.
Pairing: Jung Jaehyun x female reader
Genre: cowboy au / drama / romance / if you squint there’s some enemies to lovers up in here.
Warnings: Jung Jaehyun is a cowboy, need I say more? (a bit of angst and drama, and it sometimes might feel like you’re reading a Nicolas Sparks book, so I’m told lol)
Word count: 2450

“This is crazy!”
Glancing at Natalia next to you in the car as you neared the border for Blayne, you grinned. “I thought you grew up on farms?”
“The kind near the city. Nothing like this. There’s just a whole lot of land out here.”
“I would ask if you want me to turn around and take you back, but after travelling for this long, I want to just be done from being in this car.”
Laughing, Natalia craned her neck to use the side mirror. “I think the truck behind us might find that a little burdensome too.”
“I’m amazed that truck of his made it to the city and back.”
“Aren’t you glad Jaehyun came for you?” she wondered, and you couldn’t hide the genuine smile that spread out your lips immediately. “You’re smitten!”
“You’ve seen him. How could I not be?”
“Blayne’s livestock sure are made of fine specimens,” Natalia teased, and you laughed heartily.
“They do claim to have the best pigs in the nation, but I’m not so sure if that relates to all the men they have, Nat.”
“Well, the two I’ve seen…” She trailed off to kiss her fingers. “Total chef kiss.”
“Avery is single, too.”
“I never asked.”
“You didn’t need to. I could see the wheels turning from here.”
“Do you reckon he’d want a country Belle or-”
You grinned. “For Avery, I think he likes women in whatever way they come.”
“That doesn’t speak much for my chances.”
“Why not, Miss Natalia?” you chimed, and your best friend swatted your arm. “He didn’t even refer to me like that when I met him. Should I be sad?”
“Stop trying to snatch my cowboy away from me. You already have your own.”
Suddenly the truck signalled its horn behind you and you glanced up into the rear-mirror, noticing the indicator of the truck now on. Turning your attention to the side of the road, you couldn’t help but laugh at that gas station you had gone to all those months ago appearing again.
You didn’t need any gas, but it seemed Jaehyun’s truck needed the pit stop. Getting out of your vehicle, you noticed the smoke coming out from under the hood. Walking over to Jaehyun’s side, you gasped noisily. “Looks like it’s finally died on you.”
“She’s not dead,” he grumbled, running a hand through his hair agitatedly after popping the hood. “She needs water.”
“And a retirement,” Avery added on, leaning on the side of Jaehyun’s truck whilst shaking his head. “You and your stubborn ways.”
“I’m not giving up on her,” Jaehyun announced, and you frowned with the level of emotion you heard in his tone. He groaned. “Though, I think I might need to leave her here tonight so she doesn’t overheat further.”
Avery nodded. “I’ll go sort it out with Mick inside the station.”
Kicking the tire gently, Jaehyun turned to look over your shoulder, not quite meeting your eye. Stepping in and placing your hands on his hips, you shot him an encouraging smile. “We’ll come and pick your truck up tomorrow.”
“We?”
“Well, I’d offer to tow it, but my car won’t handle that. I’m sure Avery’s truck will, though.”
“I’m starting to feel nervous,” Jaehyun confessed, and you blinked curiously. “At your return. People are going to talk.”
“I hope they’ve been talking up a storm. And that they are still willing to talk even when I’m there. Nat and I will rely on that talk to get things moving.”
“You’re so certain about this,” he observed, and you nodded once. “Why?”
“Because this is my project. I invested a lot of my time and energy into Blayne and found the deficit too glaring to just forget about it all when your Dad ordered me to leave. Further, I can’t just stop loving you either. You and I still have a lot to discuss.”
Jaehyun nodded thoughtfully, his signature lopsided, dimpled grin appearing. “You’re a formidable woman, Miss Adaptable.”
You didn’t make a big fuss about sitting down for that chat right away once you were back in Blayne. There was a lot to be done, especially around your new residence. You weren’t staying on the Jung’s property this time, even though you wished nothing more than to wake up in your bedroom at the homestead.
Instead, you were the first guests since 1983 to inhabit the inn.
“You sure there’s no ghost stories associated with this place?” Natalia queried as you both ate breakfast in the kitchen a few days after your arrival.
Grinning at your best friend, you shrugged. “Who knows? But if there are any more co-inhabitants here with us, they ought to pick up a broom and give things a good sweep or dusting.”
“We’ve been clearing cobwebs for days. How is this town going to be a hub of change, Y/N?”
“Nothing worthwhile comes without any effort, Natty. This place is kind of charming if you put aside its outdated décor.”
“Charming, you say,” she mentioned, pointing to the dripping tap in the kitchen. Even if the room now sparkled as best as it could from your combined cleaning, you still had repairs that were pressing.
“It could be very charming,” another voice mentioned, and you grinned at Avery’s cheeky appearance. “Sorry for intruding. The back door’s always been easy enough to get in through.”
“So it’s not just your cousin who’s good with getting in and out of places they shouldn’t be.”
“Where do you think I learned it from?” Avery admitted with an easy laugh, and after sending Natalia a wink, he placed a toolbox up on the countertop. “Leaky tap, huh? I guess I ought to fix this for you before it drives you nuts.”
“Will you?!” Natalia asked, graciously smiling in his direction. “It’s not the only one needing repairs, admittedly.”
“It’s a good thing I ran down to the hardware store a town over for some new faucets then, isn’t it?”
“Where’s Jaehyun?”
As he looked for the right tool, Avery answered. “On the ranch.”
“He okay on his own?”
“Sure, if you call being in the company of my grouchy uncle after us leaving Blayne last week caused him to get behind in work, being okay.”
“I actually have to go see Mr Jung today,” you announced and smiled at the pair who stopped staring flirtatiously at each other to look in your direction. “It’s time to get things rolling, don’t you think?”
“Will you be okay?”
“If Jaehyun’s handling his father, then I think I’ll go assist him. I’m half at fault here.”
“I don’t agree entirely with that, Y/N.”
Natalia agreed with Avery. “You aren’t at fault at all.”
“There’s a lot of things I want answers to and a whole lot of information I will need to pass on to him now that I’m here to work on the redevelopment of Blayne for housing.”
“He has a temper.”
“That much I’m aware of already, Avery,” you replied with a grin, picking up your coffee and raising it in a gesture of farewell. “Nat, you stay here and help point out the areas for Avery to work on.”
“Sure, I can do that,” she answered and turned to mouth a thank you at you.
Chuckling as you stepped outside and over to your car, you stopped when you saw Dorothy crossing the road towards you.
“Well, I’ll be damned. Everyone said you were back, but I didn’t believe it until these eyes of mine saw it in person!”
Taking her hand fondly, you cocked your head to the side. “Did you truly think you could get rid of me that easily?! I have work to do here!”
“Are you staying in the inn, Y/N? I’ll make sure to send my Jacob over to help with anything you might need repairing. Lord only knows how that place is holding up.”
Pointing to the building you had just departed, you smiled. “Avery is inside fixing some taps already.”
“Really? Well, he didn’t wait long. I thought everyone was instructed to stay put until Old Jung stopped punishing his boy for bringing you back.”
“Is that how everyone is seeing it?”
“Did I speak out of turn?!” Dorothy asked with a gasp, and you shook your head firmly.
“Not at all, Dorothy. I’m grateful for what you just said. Do let everyone know it was June Jung who I called in regards to returning to Blayne about, however. She’s the one who let me and my best friend into the inn, after all.”
“June?! She’s never the type not to follow along with her husband’s word!”
Shaking your head again, you patted her lower arm. “There’s a lot to Mrs Jung that Blayne folk seem to not know about.”
Greeting June when you arrived at her home shortly after, you grinned brightly at her. She laughed. “I was worried after a few nights in that inn you might decide to leave.”
“It’s nothing like the homestead, but I can see with some effort put in how it can help with our plans.”
“He’s not exactly thrilled.”
You nodded. “I doubt your husband is.”
“But he is listening. I told him to wait for you in his office. He gruffly headed in there five minutes ago.”
“I won’t keep him waiting then,” you assured June, smiling again before taking the same pathway you had a couple of weeks ago.
Inhaling a deep breath, you pushed forward into the office, Mr Jung looking up at you. You smiled politely. “It’s nice to see you again. In case you’ve forgotten, I’m Y/N, Blayne’s new town building specialist.”
Mr Jung ignored the hand you held out to him and cleared his throat but didn’t answer. Deciding to take his silence as not a complete refusal, you sat down across from him and pulled out the proposal you had drafted up for this meeting. And without any hesitation, you launched into it.
He didn’t interrupt your speech, even picking up the copy of the plans you had placed on the table midway through and flicked to the page you were talking about. By the time you reached the end of your planned speech, you were a mixture of relief and curiosity.
You had no idea what Mr Jung was thinking.
Heaving out a breath when you were finally done, Mr Jung nodded softly. “Very well.”
“Is that all?” you asked, and Mr Jung stared over at you. His gaze didn’t make you uncomfortable, rather, vulnerable. It was as if he was trying to pick a way into your brain and figure everything out about you.
Sighing when he didn’t seem to find whatever it was, Mr Jung looked out the window. “My family has been here for generations.”
“I looked into it when initially setting up here,” you confirmed, and he smiled swiftly.
“I suppose you know about my wife then.”
“I do. I believe it’s why she’s been supportive of my stay here.”
“She tells me that you remind her of herself. I don’t entirely see it, though I’m aged and weathered now. My son, however, he’s young.”
“We don’t have to discuss Jaehyun if you are going to berate and accuse me of-”
“My son is the next generation of the Jung family line. He’ll inherit this ranch when I leave this earth, and I hope his children in the future continue to help Blayne remain a fair and happy community. When June and I found we couldn’t have any further children, where I come from a line of ten, I foolishly believed if I shaped Jaehyun from an early age to take on this place, we would continue a successful line. My parents entrusted this ranch to me, the only son. Perhaps if I had daughters too, I would have softened. But I only had one child, and I was too harsh.”
“Why did the fire happen, Mr Jung?” you asked softly, and the man rubbed at his face before leaning back in his chair.
“I told Jaehyun he couldn’t ever leave Blayne. That kid is something else. He always has been. He’s good with the cattle, he’s even better upon a horse. His school got him into rodeo early on, and I thought it would only shape him to have a competitive streak to help our ranch. The first time I saw him do a run, I knew there was more to his riding, though. But he was only twelve then. Teenage years would come, and I assumed he would choose new interests, or feel the weight of the work around the yard. Jaehyun didn’t let go of the barrels and would train even at night if he had to. He never failed to do his chores first, and I grew exasperated that I couldn’t find a way to stop him.”
“As a parent, shouldn’t you encourage his pursuits?” you pointed out, and Mr Jung nodded loosely.
“I was real proud of my boy. He had more trophies and rosettes in that bedroom of his than he had anything else. When he got scouted, he was beaming from ear to ear. I was selfish. We didn’t have anyone to take his spot here if he was going to be away. My father preached to me about how this ranch has been handled by Jung hands for decades. What you assume I did next is correct.”
“You took him out of barrel racing.”
“I thought it was for the best. And then he ran away from home. He caused trouble for a few families here with their kids following him. Avery was almost sent to boarding school because May was worried Jaehyun corrupted him. I had a township to maintain the peace with too. So I took the wrong approach with Jaehyun and cornered him further.”
“Why a fire, though?”
“I told him his only place on earth was Blayne. He said he wished Blayne would stop existing. I didn’t think he’d actually do anything about it. But he broke into the theatre that night, and the fire quickly took hold of our town.”
You merely sat there, trying to battle through Jaehyun’s past anguish and understanding the father who carried deep remorse for his actions.
Mr Jung noticed and smiled sadly. “I tried to take the blame. After all, I had driven my son to choose that path. But the people knew better. So my only approach to Jaehyun, who was racked with guilt, was to use that to hold him here. He’s never thought of leaving or doing anything else.”
Mr Jung stared at you with an indescribable expression. “Until you arrived, Y/N.”
