Back wing of the Kiscelli Castle and the surrounding park in Budapest, Hungary.
The castle is literally built on top of a clay mine. Note the perspective of the second picture: I was standing in the middle of a clay pit while taking it. Yet the castle is not collapsing and not sinking anywhere. It's not impossible to do it. Thomas Sharpe, what the hell where you doing?

Here in Budapest we have a castle built on an abandoned clay mine. Sadly it鈥檚 not breathtaking gothic architecture with ghosts trapped inside, just boring baroque turned into a museum, but at least it鈥檚 not sinking anywhere. The mine was opened in ancient Roman times, and were in use until the 1960s, when it actually became dangerous. They stopped mining because they鈥檝e feared that the clay would start to slide, and the hill would collapse into the Danube. Now it鈥檚 completely safe, the mine itself was turned into a park around the castle.聽
So yeah, it鈥檚 completely possible to built a castle on a clay mine. It鈥檚 a bit more complicated to keep mining around the house (definitely not under it!), but still possible. So what the hell the Sharpes were doing?!
I think they were so freaking gothic that they actually wanted their house to dramatically crumble into the red clay.
Crimson Peak is mostly about how you shouldn't build your house on clay and especially you shouldn't build your clay mining magnate house on the same spot as your clay pit because while this might seem like space efficiency mostly it's just a health hazard and you know who despises unsafe working/living conditions? ghosts. of people you murdered also.

Anyway, we rewatched the secret of moonacre with my sister as we do every year (it鈥檚 been our favorite movie since it came out, we basically grew up with it) and i just realized the crew and some of actors are from my country and except some places, the filming location was also set in Hungary
If anyone鈥檚 interested, the Tura castle, which was the home of the Merryweather鈥檚 family in the movie, has been renovated and now it鈥檚 functioning as a hotel since june 2020
Also, Csesznek castle (De Noir鈥檚 castle) has not changed, still the same ruins. The scenes inside the castle was filmed in Kiscelli Museum
In this link you can find some photos of the set they specifically built for the movie

Ooh you mentioned in some of your tags a while back that you recognized places in The Witcher. Was it filmed in Hungary?
Lots of season 1 was filmed here yes!!
For example, the house of the mayor of Rinde and where Geralt and Jaskier meet Yennefer:
Is actually the Tata castle!!! It鈥檚 such a lovely place
The Aretuza graduation ball:
Kiscelli Museum:
Tissaia finds Yennefer here:
It's the Skanzen in Szentendre!
And we have a glimpse of Stregobor's weird little fantasy place
Which was inspired by Vajdahunyad Castle
I would have given my right arm to be an extra on the show or just be around any of the filming locations 馃槀
