Toonami Night Review: End of Dragon Ball Power Hour, Sayonara Dragon Ball Z Kai!

Man, it’s a strange feeling when a long running show ends its run on the block. We’ve seen Dragon Ball Z Kai on Toonami as part of the Dragon Ball Power Hour that began Toonami every Saturday night, and now it’s over. Some will miss it, some will not, all with good reasons. 

For me, I think I will miss it. DBZ Kai represented the old Dragon Ball after watching the new Dragon Ball of today that is Dragon Ball Super. Seeing both was an interesting in a way to see what had changed over the years in regards to the characters, storytelling, and of course the action. But I do admit having a lot of Dragon Ball kind of got monotonous at times. 

Even so, I will miss the power hour, and even more I will miss DBZ Kai. I mean sure, Super is pretty good, but I ended up liking DBZ Kai a lot more. I don’t know, maybe it’s the nostalgia, and had that 90′s feel to it. Or maybe it was how the characters are and the way the story unfolded, I kind of feel that there was some differences compared to what’s been going on in Super. Same way I feel about the fights as well.

Well whatever the case is, I’m going to miss DBZ Kai on Toonami, and I’ll always remember the fond times I had watching it on the block. That, as well seeing everyone’s reaction on the tag every Saturday night. Good times indeed, so long Dragon Ball Z Kai, sayonara and Stay Gold.

Well enough reminiscing, on to how the rest of the run went last night, which was certainly something. However, to keep this review from being not to long, I’ll be going over the rundown while doing a the usual brief recap of each show.

First let’s go over the last Dragon Ball Power Hour on Toonami. In Dragon Ball Super, King Kai gets screwed over being brought back to life, thanks to everyone trying to get the last wish for themselves, especially Bulma. In the end, no one got the last wish, and Beerus made sure Bulma’s attempts to rebuild the time machine were put on indefinite hold.

Meanwhile, on the last episode of DBZ Kai, Goku has his fight with Uub after giving him a little push to get angry, and boy was it a good fight! But it’s soon revealed that the kid has a long way to go before getting up to Goku’s level. Seeing his potential, Goku agrees to train him and says goodbye to his friends yet again. Grabbing Uub, Goku then flies off into the distance, looking forward to training his new student, and an even better fight in the future. Truly a Goku way of ending the show. See you in Super, you crazy Saiyan.

Speaking of students, we return to My Hero Academia, where the hero exercise continues. While Bakugou goes all out on Deku and nearly kills him, Deku refuses to fight him and manages to use up all his strength to shatter the floor in the next lever above. This allows his teammate, Ochaco, to get through Tenya and grab the target. Excellent work, if not an emotional battle to stand up to your former friend/egotistical bully.

Moving on, in FLCL Progressive things got pretty insane While trying to break into Medical Mechanica, Haruko and Jinyu begin fighting one another, while Iide tries to keep a perky happy Hidomi from accidentally killing herself. In the end, Hidomi returns to her old self, but Jinyu gets reabsorbed by Haruko, the two now becoming one. Oh, and we find out what happened to the robot Canti. Got broken and put on a cross of all things. How bizarre.

And speaking of bizarre, in Stardust Crusaders, it’s JoJo’s turn after Kakyoin loses to the younger D’Arby. Jotaro chooses a game of baseball against D’Arby, but turns out to be a problem when JoJo is good at actual baseball, but not video games. However, JoJo gets the hang of it, but still has to deal with D’Arby predicting his next moves. Never has video games baseball been this suspenseful!

In Hunter x Hunter, Gon encounters a Chameleon Chimera Ant that’s been following him, while Killua deals with an Octopus Chimera Ant who refuses to be called an octopus. In Black Clover, the villains escape, but two are captured and taken away. The city recovers, Fuegoleon and Leopold are recovering, and the Magic Knights return to their duties. Oh, and Asta and Charmy get promoted, giving them a higher rank than their teammates Magna and Luck. And in Naruto Shippuden, Killer B takes on Kisame, and with help from the recently arrived Raikage, the two bros make sashimi out of the fishy Akatsuki. 

In Space Dandy, the commander of the Jaicro Empire, Johnny, wants to start a rock band with Dandy called the Dropkicks, but has to decide to choose between gig or war. In the end, gig wins, and the Dropkicks give it their all. Unfortunately, their gig ends up being their last, and their only song becomes a one hit wonder. And as Johnny returns to commanding his forces, Dandy and his crew is left to deal with all the extra merch.

We then ended the night jamming to a horror suspense episode on Cowboy Bebop, when something begins lurking within the Bebop, an attacks its crew. In the lessons we learn from each of them, Spike gives us the best one. And that lesson is don’t leave things in the fridge. And then on Lupin the Third, Jigen takes the spotlight this time, showing us who’s the superior gunslinger when facing group of gunmen terrorizing a town, while having a bad tooth ache.
