HIGNFY's Guest Webterview: Kirsty Young
Q1. Kirsty, you're the only woman to host Have I Got News For You more than once...
I'm always delighted to be asked to host a show that I have watched for 17 years, and it means they don't think I'm a complete washout, so that's good.
Q2. Have you got any tips for other women who host the show?
It is quite a boy-sy atmosphere on that set, so sometimes it needs a woman. It is a bit nerve wracking, but women generally don't feel the need to be as competitive as men. I just do it my own way and try to enjoy it. If you're asked to host the show, just take your courage in both hands and say yes, because it is a lot of fun. And Ian and Paul are really pussycats behind the scenes.
Q3. If you could invite any two guests on the show, dead or alive, who would they be?
I would have a 'double Bill': Bill Clinton and Bill Hicks. Bill Hicks was the most vivid, extraordinary, ranting stand up I have ever seen. I saw him on his final tour before he died. He was a brilliant brilliant stand-up, brilliant on politics, and the liberal versus right-wing agenda - I just think he'd be perfect for Have I Got News For You.
Bill Clinton because he has got a sense of humour, and he is a raconteur. I met him once and he just fizzes charisma. And I think there is quite a lot of mileage in there, not least in the dry cleaning gags.
Q4. You take over from Fiona Bruce as host of Crimewatch in January. Will you return the compliment and invite Paul or Ian to guest host that show?
It's always a pleasure to see them. If they wanted to come and answer the phones, as long as they promised to do it seriously, I'm sure we'd welcome them.
Q5. Who is your favourite rival guest host?
Well I think it's curious that you use the word rival. I don't think of it that way; everyone does it in their own style. I know I shouldn't but I can't resist watching Boris Johnson and the way he does it. He gets through it by the skin of his teeth, but he's entertaining. I thought that in the last series, Moira Stuart was really great - she had a wonderful wry sense of humour. Charlotte Church was a laugh too.
Q6. Would Britain be better or worse off if Paul and Ian were in charge of the two major political parties?
It could only be better. Paul would bring his own particular brand of esoteric humour that could only brighten the day. I think it would be interesting to see how Ian would do; he is so incisive and unforgiving of the inadequacies and dalliances of others. He is bloody annoyingly good at everything he does so I think he'd be quite good in politics as well, though I'm sure he wouldn't go near it with a barge pole.
Q7. Having reported on the news for many years, do you think satirical quiz shows are too harsh on politicians, or not harsh enough?
I certainly don't think they are too harsh on politicians. I think satire is important. There is a proud tradition of satire going all the way back to Hogarth and probably even further back than that. Spitting Image was necessary, Have I Got News For You is necessary. I think that if you're big and ugly enough to go into politics, then you can take it on the chin when people dish it out.
Q8. If you had to spend a week on a desert island with Ian and Paul, which luxury item would you insist on taking with you?
That's very tricky. After the show I always enjoy having a drink with Ian and Paul, so I think I would take a full bar. I would probably get very gently wrecked with them and listen to their brilliant repartee. There is no greater pleasure than being in the company of very bright funny people and getting slightly sozzled.

Does anyone else just want their two main fandoms to crossover for literally no reason? Even if it doesn't make sense? Like Saw and Hellraiser don't make sense but it would be so cool

Hot Dutch Daydream by Kirsty Boyce Book Review
ARC kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
This book was okay but it didn't really *grab* me.
I have to give the book some credit though, it was very atmospheric and I think Kirsty Boyce did a great job at immersing the reader in Amsterdam/Holland, making them feel like a tourist in the book much like main character Sage.
I enjoyed the characters. Sage was very ambitious with her study goals, although it was sort of unrealistic for a high school student to have that sort of prestigious internship overseas without being a medical student at university and without any prior experience. I liked Rhy, he was very sweet and I liked how artsy he was. All the characters made this book a very lighthearted read.
My issues with the book came with the romance, it felt a little too quick for my liking with the main character instantly falling for the love interest despite not being interested in boys or relationships previously. A slow burn would've been a better way to go about developing the chemistry between Sage and Rhyland.
While the book was very light-hearted, I kind of wanted a bit more from the book. It was definitely one of those fluffier stories but I wanted a bit more meat on the bone. It felt like there was something lacking and I felt bored at parts, wanting something more to happen with the story. That being said, I would recommend this book to people who would want a happy, light-hearted novel.

Currently reading: I was broken, numb to want and desire, but then he came along...
Three years after the tragic events of Anna’s sixteenth birthday which saw her boyfriend killed and her kidnapped by his sadistic murderer, she’s no longer the happy-go-lucky girl that everyone used to know and love; she’s now cold, hard and suffers from night terrors.
Carter is currently serving time for the murder of Jack–a conviction that Anna helped secure–but his retrial is coming up because some key evidence appears to have been tampered with.
Needing to ensure his daughter’s safety, presidential candidate, Senator Spencer, tasks in Ashton Taylor, a newly qualified SWAT agent, to guard the broken girl and keep her safe until the end of the trial.
For three years Anna has refused to feel emotion or pain. Can Ashton help her rebuild her life and finally deal with the grief of losing her childhood sweetheart? Will he be the one to make her see that life is, in fact, worth living and that not all men will hurt her?
Author's note: This edition contains Part 1 (Guarding the Broken) and Part 2 (Blurring the Lines) and combines them into one novel of epic proportion!

According to the internet, I’m a “boy mum”. It’s not a term I’d heard until I gave birth to a baby boy. Suddenly, I was being bombarded with videos about the nightmare in store for me. This was footage showing the kind of destructive male-toddler behaviour that Jackass stars Johnny Knoxville and Bam Margera would deem too risky. Meanwhile, their mothers were portrayed as longsuffering, harried, hard-as-nails veterans of the boy-toddler insane asylum.
My son is very physically active, but he’s also a gentle, cautious child, so this doesn’t resonate with me, or with several of the “boy mums” I know. (Meanwhile, some of the “girl mums” spend their days chasing their Tasmanian Devil-esque daughters like they’re in a Looney Tunes cartoon.) Yet it’s everywhere. Then, last week, I saw a report that found girls were playing outside less than boys, even at two years old – something that shocked the researchers, who hadn’t expected to see socialised gender roles emerging so early.
It didn’t shock me, sadly. Not when I’m regularly tearing my hair out in clothes shops trying to find something for my two-year-old son to wear that isn’t black or camouflage, like he’s a ninja, or a small soldier already primed for aggression.
“It’s not our fault, but we’ve all internalised that ‘boys-take-up-more-space’stereotype,” Kirstie Beaven, the founder of Sonshine magazine, a publication geared towards raising boys for a more equal world, tells me.
“Girls’ clothes are made for sitting still and looking pretty, while boys’ clothes are made for activity, even in the baby or toddler sections. Parents of babies tend to underestimate girls’ gross motor skills – expecting they will be less competent than boys at crawling or climbing – and we’re all more likely to encourage our sons to take physical risks, and expect our daughters to ‘be careful’.”
Beaven says that by the time our children are two years old, we probably don’t expect our daughters to need as much outside time. “Nor are they as comfy or confident when they are outside,” she says. “If your shoes are too flimsy to climb a tree or your T-shirt is cut uncomfortably short and tight, it’s not surprising you want to go home early.”
As a 90s tomboy kid raised in dungarees, this thought breaks my heart a little. A lack of outdoor physical activity will disadvantage girls from a young age, and these gendered expectations harm boys, too, as Ruth Whippman, author of the book BoyMum, tells me.
“The flipside of the ‘boys play outside more’ phenomenon is that parents as a whole give boys less of the kind of quiet indoor-type attention that they give to girls,” she says. “Wide-scale research across countries shows that from as early as nine months, parents spend more time with girls on activities such as learning letters and numbers, singing, drawing and telling stories. Girls now outperform boys at school and researchers believe these differences in parental time inputs account for a significant portion of the difference.”
What I loved about Whippman’s book was that it beautifully conveyed the internal battle many intelligent feminist mothers found themselves having when raising boys who may be conforming to certain stereotypes.
“When my three boys were small, people used to tell me all the time [that] ‘boys are like dogs – all they need is food and exercise, and just try to wear them out’,” Whippman says. “I used to absolutely hate it, as it seemed so dehumanising. But perhaps what I hated even more was the fact that in our case it was kind of true.”
Of course, like most mothers, she initially held herself responsible.
As with many of these questions, a complex interplay between nurture and nature is involved, and it’s stupid to deny biology any kind of role. Whippman highlights how male foetuses get a shot of testosterone in the womb that has been linked in other mammals to a tendency to play more roughly, while girls may be able to sit still and focus for longer at younger ages because the areas of the brain responsible for impulse control and emotional self-regulation generally develop earlier in girls.
The point is, though, that parents often increase this divide by failing to correct their own unconscious biases and help their kids work on the areas where they could improve their skills. As Whippman puts it: “When it comes to gender, as parents, we end up turning small differences into big differences.”
Seeing how much my little boy needs me, how much touch, affection and reassurance he craves, has been one of the most educative experiences I’ve had since I became his mum. I’ve known many men whose feelings as little boys were neglected, often in contrast to the comfort and time any sisters’ emotional needs were given.
“If we don’t let boys express all parts of their personalities and emotional lives because they are just ‘wild monsters’, we are not only doing them a huge disservice, we are storing up problems in how they interact with others in later life,” says Beaven, who also says that the “boy mum” stereotype boiled her blood.
If we are to tackle the crises in violence against women and in male mental health, we need to be open about how damaging these stereotypes are for boys as well as girls. That starts with being honest with ourselves about how much we, as parents, are encouraging them. That’s why you’ll never find me identifying as a “boy mum”, no matter how much the internet wants me to.

Does anyone else ever ship final girls with each other? Like I do this very often. I've made ships like Laurie Strode x Sidney Prescott, or Nancy Thompson x Kirsty Cotton, and even Amanda Young x Nancy Downs. Like they're so random but I'm in love with it.

== Love Notes ==
Hey there lovelies! I know the Hurricane hit FL yesterday and I'm really hoping all of you are okay. Please be sure to reach out to your crew if you need something ,ya? As a heads up, I'm gonna get into some real talk tonight, so please bear with me. I have heard some stuff lately about how not everyone is redeemable, and not everyone deserves a second chance, and I thought this would be a good time to mention some things that have been on my mind about said subject. Every single one of us is human. Good people make mistakes, good people do things out of good intentions that go badly, seemingly bad people do good things occasionally, and people who generally seem neutral can fuck up. This world is not black and white, and I know our trauma has taught us over and over and over that it is. The world is a big grey goopy lump of clay and every single situation, no matter how similar, is different from the one before. Don't get me wrong-- I'm not saying, don't have boundaries. I'm absolutely not saying "forgive" someone who has done some horrible shit to you or has hurt you over and over. What I'm saying is-- every single person has a unique experience that causes them to make decisions based off of knowledge limited by their experience, or the experiences of the people they know. Now why is that important? That means people can change with new information, or when treated differently. I'm gonna use our show as an example-- did the Queen Anne and Revenge crew think pirating was their only option? Yes. (Was that true? Yes, for them because of class, race issues, etc but that's a talk for another time). They believed there was only one way to do things, and no other options were out there because there were never other options presented to them. Stede offered a different perspective. Now there's A MILLION caveats and complex situations, and things, but my point is-- "irredeemable people" out there sometimes don't know any different, and if one group continues to try to explain one thing to them, and it doesn't get through-- that doesn't necessarily mean they are choosing not to change their mind. It might mean that the perspective isn't clicking for them. Another person, maybe with similar trauma, maybe with different life experiences so drastically different can explain something in a way that opens the eyes of someone that others haven't been able to. The point I'm trying to make here is--- YOU are not irredeemable. YOU are worthy of forgiveness for mistakes you've made. YOU are not the same person you were 10 years ago, or a month ago, or yesterday. Your neighbors, your friends, your family, your moots, your acquaintances on the internet, no one is the same as they were yesterday. Some people may never be in a place where they can forgive you for something-- but THAT DOESNT MEAN YOU are irredeemable or unforgivable. People clash, and we don't have to be loved and forgiven by everyone to be valid. We can choose to do better, and even if that doing better never reaches the person/event who triggered the change, that doesn't make YOU any less of a better person. That doesn't mean YOU didn't improve. It means they can't forgive you for their own reasons-- and your happiness and worth shouldn't be based on that. You are so much more than your past actions lovelies. Please remember that. Please remember that tomorrow is not written in stone. You are wonderful, and you are trying your best and that's all anyone can ask of you. Please remember that we love you crew. We care about you-- and we all do things we don't mean to. It doesn't make us unloveable, it makes us human.
Be kind to yourself if you can, and get some rest <3. Sending so much love your way.

Hey blog, Adam Knightstone here. You probably know me from my harsh yet truthful art critic columns. Or I'm just the friendly neighbourhood fellow whose satellite discourages alien abductions, you're welcome. Surprise surprise there's not always simoleons in complaining about stuff, and with my young family it's harder to paint without tiny hands getting on the canvas. Long story short, I'm hoping to get a side hustle as a part time info gather for Juliana Angel over at SIMVERSE (@swallowprettybird).
June means PRIDE. I've seen a lot of great lesbian, gay and bisexual sims around and am hoping to get a pile for Juliana to check out as possible magazine spreads. My problem is I want her to think I'm a professional from the get go, and there is a bunch to wade through. It would help if you could let me know if you have seen blogs with, or have posted about your own:
Transgender sims (non-binary included)
Intersex sims
Aroace sims
These groups are often underrepresented so may be harder for me to find. Hit me up if you can. Cheers, Adam
Hi, Suzanna here. Adam's wife who is aware we're living in a simulation. You obviously can't send stuff to Adam so please send it to our watcher Kirsty @changingplumbob or comment below.
#Yes Adam does protect my save from alien abductions#I miss this family#Have to get back to them soon
