SWPL Cup: Late goals see Hibernian beat Hearts in Edinburgh derby

Hibernian scored four goals in the final 17 minutes to beat Hearts in the SWPL Cup first round.

Celtic joined them in the last eight with a similar 4-0 win over St Johnstone, while champions Glasgow City were 7-0 winners against Kilmarnock.

A late goal edged Rangers past Motherwell, while there were wins for Spartans, Forfar Farmington and Stirling University.

Glasgow Girls against Hamilton was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Holders Hibernian may have eventually surged through to the second round, but Hearts have put up stiff resistance against their top flight rivals.

Lia Tweedie hit the post in the seventh minute, but it took until the introduction of substitute Shannon McGregor with 30 minutes left for the goals to start arriving.

The new signing from Aberdeen finally broke the deadlock in 73 minutes when she pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire home.

Two minutes later and Tweedie volleyed in a second from the edge of the box.

Now Hibs had found their clinical side. Cailin Michie hit the crossbar, before Katey Turner made it three goals in three games when she finished a cut-back.

Kirsty Smith took the ball past a glut of Hearts defenders before unleashing a 25-yard strike to wrap up the win.

Glasgow City’s new signing Kirsty Howat scored her first goal since signing for the league champions, then went on to score another three.

It could have been five for the former Celtic midfielder had she not hit the post, but Abbi Grant, Joanne Paton and Megan Foley also found the net to ensure a comfortable route to the next round for Scott Booth’s side.

Motherwell had started the season in emphatic style and Eddie Wolecki Black’s side fancied their chances away to Rangers.

They were finally undone eight minutes from time through Chantelle Brown’s goal, though the home side had to finish the game a player down after Chelsie Watson was sent off for a last-ditch challenge.

Celtic signed German striker Josephine Giard on Friday and she played the last 20 minutes as they got the better of St Johnstone.

Nicole Pullar continued her fine start to the season with a double, while Heather Richards and Ruesha Littlejohn also got on the scoresheet.

Elsewhere, Spartans were 3-1 winners away to Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale, Forfar Farmington beat north-east rivals Aberdeen 3-0, and Stirling University beat Central Girls 3-2 to ensure seven wins out of seven for the top flight sides.

Judith Green argues in her Labour Briefing that we can’t accurately identify inequality, injustice and violence if we are unable to name the sources of inequality. If we don’t identify sex we can’t identify sexism. And we live in a sexist society – sex matters. 

Gender is the sexist society’s mechanism. Sex is the discriminator on which it acts.

Judith writes:

I am a midwife and trade unionist. I never assign sex and find parents are quite capable of identifying their baby’s sex.  My job includes documenting sex in the health record and sex is recorded in birth registration. Sex is only ‘assigned’ to babies when this is not obvious at birth – a rare occurrence. Recording of the sex of male and female newborns is important. There are health issues for newborn boys (such as undescended gonads) that do not exist for newborn girls (for whom internal gonads are healthy) and vice versa.

Recording sex at birth, and various life junctures, is vital to the social and political health of us all.

Every single claim that feminists and socialists have ever made about the representation and treatment of women is dependent upon this data. This includes that 100 million women were missing due to sex-selective abortion, infanticide and unequal treatment of girls first published in 1990. Our efforts for a more just, equal and peaceful world start with being able to accurately identify inequality, injustice and violence. Without recording sex we would not know that even more women (estimated 117 million) are missing today.

Changing how sex is legally defined

Bridget Chapman and Kirstie Paton write that self-declaration will not render meaningless sex discrimination legislation or the category of woman.  Yet, Stephen Whittle, a key activist for the Gender Recognition Act described how in that legislation “gender identity transforms legal sex…there is no recourse to the sexed body which suggests that the body’s sex as a taxonomical tool has in some way become redundant… Changing sex for the purposes of legal recognition then, is … about changing how sex is legally defined.”

The Equality Act placed limits on this disregard for the sexed body, setting out exceptions in Schedule 3, Paragraph 28. These allow the provision of single-sex services provided they are a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.

The passing of a self-declaration law together with a removal of these exceptions would see the current delicate balance of rights between ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ in the Equality Act overturned.

Socialists who want ‘the body’s sex as a taxonomical tool’ made redundant should reflect on the violent exploitation of female bodies. Women have won services and organisations that meet our needs for safety, dignity, privacy and healing at times when our bodies and psyches are vulnerable.

Those confident that new legislation will not impact women’s rights should not fear full discussion of the proposals. The left must consider the impact of further changing how sex is defined.

  Readers may like to consider the impact of “disappearing” sex when looking at persistent inequalities in our sexist society. Women-only spaces are crucial for our safety & wellbeing, as so many authors have described here. Just as crucially, we need to identify the social, economic and legal barriers to our equality. We can’t tackle discrimination if we cannot name the discriminators.
