AGE: Sixteen to seventeen but can be written to be older or younger depending on the verse.

SPECIES: Human.

SEX: Cisgender male.

NATIONALITY: Japanese.

INTERESTS: Sports, running, manga, eating ramen, trying different ramen places, fishing, camping, exercising, video games.

PROFESSION: Second year high school student - in older verses, he might potentially have a job.

BODY TYPE: Athletic - at the start of the game he indicates he's been out of shape for a bit but consistently works to try and once again get fit and athletic once more.

HAIR: Naturally black, bleached blonde.

POSTURE: Lazy, usually sits with one leg folded across the other and his arms behind his head. Fidgets a lot.

VOICE: Excitable and loud to the point of it being a detriment at times but his voice is very open and hides nothing, always speaking from pure emotion and passion.

1. What is the biggest headcanon deviation from the canon material that you have incorporated into the way you write your muse? Why did you come up with it?

This type of question is honestly difficult for me because I don’t really have a lot of gripes about how Ryuji was portrayed in the canon - what I take issue with is how these parts of his character become contorted and exaggerated by the fandom as an excuse to either rag on him or say how horrible he is.

I guess just as a rule of thumb, I try to tone down his interest in girls compared to the game - I still very much imagine and write him as a teenage boy who has hormones, he has crushes, he can notice when a girl is attractive and yeah, he’ll have moments of admiring them or dumbly trying to impress them.  So many times though, I’ve seen instances of his scenes in the game with Anne for example, being used as a reason as to why Ryuji is secretly a horrible person and why he’s no better than Kamoshida (???) - because he, what, showed interest in a teenage girl as a teenage boy?

3. What is something that was never addressed at all in the canon material that you have independently developed for your muse?

Although I don’t like to try and offer up definitive headcanons on things that are ambiguously canon - because Atlus could always just announce otherwise and render that headcanon completely null and void - I think I do try and go into more detail about his early home life, about what happened to his dad, his relationship with his Ma and how they became just so close.  I honestly think it’s a shame that it was never expanded on and while I do appreciate the game’s focus on Kamoshida’s abuse of him, I do think it’s a shame how they never really delved into his dad - the first authority figure in his life and a familial one at that - someone who let him down in every possible way, as a person, as a man - and physically abused his own son.  I honestly just wonder what sort of repercussions that would have on someone like Ryuji and how it would cause trust issues with authority figures in his life, particularly men, going forward.

5. What is an aspect of your muse’s canon material or canon existence that you never had the opportunity to explore but really want to?

I’ve very briefly touched on his life before he moved to Tokyo (I headcanon him as living in Hokkaido before moving to Tokyo - because of his nickname, ‘Captain Kirikomi’.  Anyway, I do recall discussing that and even writing the beginnings of it with a Joker on Discord but if I recall correctly, this particular Joker either stopped roleplaying altogether or is no longer in the Persona fandom to my knowledge.  We didn’t get super far in our interactions either.

The idea of a childhood friends AU or a Pre!Tokyo AU is something that’s been discussed and thrown around a few times but never something that’s been set in stone.  I would love to fix that though.

7. For movie or TV muses, what is your muse’s favorite scene? Why? Can you show a screenshot?

It probably would be easier for me to just pick a scene from the video game but I’m going to take this ask literally because I feel like it.

For me, the airing of Daybreakers was something that was really special - if I’m not mistaken, Daybreakers was a released about a month before - or at the very least, very close to the game’s Japanese release - the hype was unreal.

If you remember the streaming service, Rabbit, where people basically cluster into a room and put up movies or YouTube or whatever, a group of people on here had arranged a viewing of Daybreakers on the night that it came out - so we set time aside and we watched it all together, commentating on it, mostly freaking out about how awesome it looked - getting to see these characters fully animated and voiced and fleshed out for the first time - it was the beginning of something special and although this isn’t a Ryuji centric scene, the fight scene in Daybreakers will always feel top notch to me - from cleverly demonstrating the game’s ‘Baton Touch’ mechanic to playing ‘Last Surprise’ during the entire scene.  Truly, an experience I’ll always treasure and I think part of why I’m so hesitant to watch the Persona 5 anime is because I guess I’m worried it won’t be able to live up to this complete badassery of a scene.

From his early childhood, he’d always been a natural mama’s boy at heart - she supported him in every endeavor and only wanted the best for her son.  Too bad he doesn’t have many kind words for his old man, who was little more than a useless drunk and an abusive monster who took his failures out on his own wife and child.  The day he left was one of the most bittersweet days of his life - bitter in the sense that it’d be one less person to provide for the family - yet also sweet in the sense that they were finally free from that bastard.

RELATIONSHIP TENDENCIES. The beginning of a relationship is a bit of a honeymoon phase for him as he simply enjoys his partner’s presence.  Over time, insecurities and vulnerabilities might start to creep up on him and he may second guess himself a little, wondering if he’s good enough.  With the help of a stable and supportive partner, he’ll be steered back on the right track.

CHARACTER’S THEME SONG. Uh, the entire P5 soundtrack? I’m not good at matching songs to characters. HOBBIES TO PASS THE TIME. Reading manga, playing video games, stretches, push-ups, exercises, sports. MENTAL ILLNESSES/DISORDERS. I’ve never really delved into it but I would imagine he’d probably have some PTSD from what happened to him with Kamoshida and his leg. PHYSICAL ILLNESSES. Broken leg that didn’t properly heal over.  Now walks with a slight limp and can’t run for extended periods of time without tripping or overexerting himself. LEFT OR RIGHT BRAINED. Right FEARS. Failure, something happening to his Ma, being alone. SELF CONFIDENCE LEVEL. His self confidence really hit a new low after what Kamoshida did t him and he’s been slowly building it back up, presenting a confident and cocky demeanor to try and mask his own insecurities.  For the most part, he’s pretty satisfied with himself but he has his moments of doubt. VULNERABILITIES. He has a short temper and can be aggressive if provoked - he’s also a little on the loud and obnoxious side and may be prone to trusting others easily and being deceived.
