Imagine someone having a crush on Spider and the family going nuts and overprotective of him. I can see Jake and Neytiri just coming along to make sure none hurts their kid. Tuk and Kiri seeing what information they can dig up. Neyetam and Loa's spying on Spider and the person who got a crush on him.

if spider were to at all engage, even unknowingly, in the romance scene, all hell would break lose.

every adult in his life is running personal background checks on anyone who so much as looks at him too long, handing out death threats and shovel talks like they're going out of style, and guarding the boy like there lives depend on it. neytiri is particularly vicious about it, that's her baby, and she'd like to keep it that way (not in the weird emotional incest way, don't worry. its like in the, he can't grow up in her eyes, he's just her baby, he's not old enough to date, type of way). jake just doesn't want his kid getting hurt, so you know, he's a military dad, he has to sniff out any potential threats like a fucking drug dog.

the kids have mixed reactions; neteyam, forever the 3rd parent, is like his mother, he doesn't want spider to grow up and fly the nest so he basically just carries him away from any and all potential suiters. lo'ak is a terrible wing man, like god awful wing man, and after spider actually gains an admirer, and he realizes he hates the idea of his brother dating anyone, he uses that fact to his advantage. kiri just teases him, to the high hells, its nonstop, no breaks, she just wants to dog on him for being a boy in love/having admirers. tuk is so judgy, if he catch's him staring at someone she will give him a full run down of why they aren't worth it, if she catch's someone staring at her big brother she will bite them 0 hesitation.

if spider were to accept someone's courting gestures, eywa have mercy, cause his whole families gonna stroke out, and take his lover with them in the process. cause now all of there crazy is concentrated on one person, and all spider can do is try and beat them back with a broom and apologize for his 'crazy family'.

they do like seeing him happy though, so, in time, they would lay back until whoever he's with becomes part of their family as well.

confession: look, on the one hand, I like Spider, I do. He’s an interesting character and I agree that the hate he gets in some corners of the fandom is absolutely ridiculous. He’s not a backstabber or villainous or a flip-flopper or whatever other bullcrap, he’s an orphan kid in an alien world trying to find somewhere to belong, the hate is silly.

but.

I’m growing equally tired of seeing posts with an attitude of trying to guilt-trip people for not viewing him as a member of the Sully family. Canonically, he simply isn’t (sorry, but the movie directly, explicitly stating “he wasn’t part of our family” outweighs concept art with an “unofficial adoption” songcord bead).

The Sully family is very personally meaningful to me right now, so naturally I want to focus my energy on them. Spider is of course a close friend of the family, so sometimes he will be included just like Norm or other characters are sometimes included, but I’m not going to go out of my way to shove him in every single time...and quite frankly, the more I see folks acting like it’s somehow problematic to not consider Spider a member of the Sully family (which again canonically he isn’t), the less I want to do stuff that includes him :/
