12. what's the funniest or craziest AU idea you've ever come up with?

oh, i'm not sure i actually ever came up with a funny or crazy au idea? lemme think about that one.

Ok i thought about it. Since i'm super duper into disco rn you'll understand that i stick to that show for a bit as well.

A while ago i thought about what would have happened if Mirror!Georgiou and T'Rina had met and... in some strange way i think it would work out? Them together would be pretty much a crack ship but i got kinda obsessed with the idea of them meeting. Two powerful women, both *very* different characters, but both teasing, very self assured, hot&badass? Like yeah, that would have been great!

The AU therefore would be "what if mirror!georgiou would have stayed in the prime timeline and met the president of ni'var"

why yes i would love to talk a bit about my fave disco character <3

I headcanon that T'Rina is a plant killer. Idk, the idea is just hilarious to me? Now I don't mean that she kills every plant she touches, but she either means wayyy to well (overwaters) or idk, she accidentally tips them over, and they always end up looking a bit ragged looking and whenever Saru comes over he's like "Rinnah, what the *hell* happened here???" and she's like "Ashal, whatever do you mean, I have had this plant for almost three weeks and it is still thriving" (thriving in this case means it has stagnated completely in it's growth, the roots have began to rot and some of the leaves are beginning to become yellow).

I wrote a fic once about her trying to frantically take care of the plant Saru gave her but kinda failing and having to ask for help again. After that it works out great, so yeah, she can keep plants alive if she is being told precicely how to care for them (i.e. she doesn't forget about them she's just abd at reading plants i guess). Saru leaves her in charge of his office exactly once. For two days. And never again.

“Elizabeth? What are you still doing here?” Teyla asked with a stern expression on her face, leaning in the doorway of Elizabeth’s office.

“What does it look like.” Elizabeth didn’t even look up, her eyes twitching back and forth between her notebook and her tablet.

Teyla crossed her arms, slightly irritated, even though this was not the first time she found Elizabeth in her office well after midnight. “You said you were going to sleep two hours ago.”

“I said I’d try.”

“And did you?”

Finally, Elizabeth looked up, her eyes heavy with fatigue and her expressions sluggish. How long had she gone without sleep this time?

“Sleep is for the weak,” she deadpanned, and returned her attention to her screen.

Teyla sighed and strode across the room, placing her hands firmly on the desktop, and leaning consciously into Elizabeth’s personal space. After what happened last time they had been in such a tight spot she was even more conscious of Elizabeth’s sometimes reckless attitude towards sleep.

The trick worked, Elizabeth leaned back, hesitant to show their closeness in such a public space.

“Elizabeth, you haven’t seen you sleep at all last night. You belong in bed. Now.”

“That almost sounds like a threat,” Elizabeth said with half a smile, searching Teyla’s eyes as if she was trying to determine just how much longer she could test Teyla’s patience, but she stayed unwavering, not allowing herself to fall for Elizabeth’s games this time. 

“If you don’t get out of your office and into your quarters right away I will have to carry you there myself.”

“Now, that sounds like a threat.” Elizabeth smirked, wilfully ignoring the seriousness in Teyla’s voice.

Finally, after Teyla had stared her down for a good 15 seconds, Elizabeth’s smile slowly faded, her whole expression slacked and a deep sigh was released from her chest. “You’re right. Let me just…”

“No.” Teyla put a hand on top of her laptop. “Did you save all your work?” She knew from various meltdowns of various members of the expedition how important saving one’s progress on digital devices was.

Elizabeth hit a few keys, then nodded. Without another word Teyla closed the notebook for her, not giving her even the slightest chance to go back to finishing up whatever it was she had been working on. When Elizabeth’s hand moved towards her tablet, Teyla intersected her hand by lightly but insistently grabbing her wrist. For a moment, she held her gaze, then Elizabeth got up wordlessly and walked towards the door.

On their way to the living areas, Teyla could feel a certain coolness coming from Elizabeth, but she knew it would be gone in the morning at the lastest. It shouldn’t be her responsibility to send Elizabeth to bed like a child, but there were times when Elizabeth lost sight of what was good and necessary for herself and therefore for Atlantis, in which cases Teyla stepped in. Nobody else would.

“You didn’t have to walk me to my door,” Elizabeth mumbled once they reached her quarters.

“I wanted to make sure you didn’t turn around halfway there,” Teyla replied with a hint of a smile in her voice. Now that she was certain that Elizabeth would turn in soon, she felt more relaxed and calm, able to be kind and lighthearted again.

“Well, thanks.” Elizabeth opened her doors but turned towards her again, a shyness on her face that Teyla knew too well.

“Would you like to come in?”

“Is this another plot to postpone sleeping for another while?” Teyla asked, half joking, but secretly longing for some closeness that she had been deprived of for the last few days.

Elizabeth shook her head. “No. But I’ll sleep better with you there.”

Teyla’s heart softened at this open and honest confession, and she nodded, entering the familiar quarters.

Minutes later they had changed into their sleeping attires and curled up in bed, the blanket that Charin had made for them tugged up to their chins. Elizabeth’s back was pressed against Teyla’s front, one of Teyla’s arms wrapped securely around her waist, and Teyla could already feel Elizabeth’s breath slowing.

“Sleep tight,” she whispered and pressed a kiss onto Elizabeth’s dark curls before nuzzling closer one last time and letting sleep take her away.

if there's one thing ds9 is good at is friendships, from the very beginning to its evolution to casual nods to offscreen adventures they're having. unfortunately if there's one thing ds9 is bad at is romance, especially with the female characters.

(spoilers incoming!)

jadzia and kira are probably the characters that suffer the most form this. kira's relationships before odo are so bland and boring and the show must know it, i feel like at some point they even stop trying- they didn't even show her breaking up with the last one we just got a passing mention!! and odo (although I have to admit i haven't got to the point where they really got together yet) most of the relationship seems to focus so much on him and so little on her.

jadzia's characterization is already not great when worfs comes into the picture and all jadzia episode become jadziaandworf episode its even worse. also. I really dont like their relationship, they are just too fundamentally different and they fight so often. i dont even think she wanted to get married, shes horny and very enthusiastic while he's horny and desperate to feel like a true klingon

keiko and miles relationship is... decent. imo sometimes they randomly decide they cant stand each other anymore and they both become whiny and unreasonable, sometimes tho they make it clear that that he's very much into her and shes just cool like that. still miles is much more fun when hes with julian! amd anyway keiko gets sidelined almost immediately (even the kira is pregnants with our child arc is good! this is proof deep space nine writers cannot write couples and they ultimately had to solve it by making it a polycule.)

sisko's relationship is really not given much space so i wont comment on it but you know what my favorite sisko scenes are??? those with jake and those where he's cooking for everyone.

julian's most important relationship is with garak tbh and oMG GARAK. DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED. they were so desperate to separate them he was given a relationship with such a different age gap she could be his daughter!!!!

anyway I dont know if this is a product of the casual misogyny/casual i hate my wife jokes from the 90s but its just ??? how can you fumble some arcs so much ????

Kira Nerys and Angst About Political Leaders!

this is 2 pictures of a scene I wrote for the episode Rocks and Shoals, it’s a scene between Kira and Keiko who are two I ship very badly. I wanted to post this art one because I wanted too, and two because thanks to you guys, I phone banked tonight for the first time in a very very long time. Thank you all again for holding me accountable. My head feels like it ran a marathon, but I also feel like I did something for the first time in forever, so that’s slightly nice. I’ve lately related to major Kira in the episode “Rocks and Shoals” Alot. I’m sorry, this is a spoiler, but in Rocks and Shoals, Kira seems just beaten down, she smiles numbly and takes coffee from the Cardassian oppressors and the Dominion who has taken the station by force. Throughout the episode Kira becomes jaded, as she watches bit by bit as the Bajor and the hard won station she has come to know as a home, is taken away. I feel like that too. I should first preface, I’m not like Kira. I am not anywhere near cool as her, nor have I suffered a fraction as much as She Has. But I do relate to sitting back and trying too make my head blank and not think about how many Anti Trans Legislation had been swept in, taking piece by piece my right to exist with it. And making the place I once felt as my home, a nest of facism. And as an LGBTQIA+ person I feel scared and numb. The Supreme Court is talking about taking away Gay Marrige. Its talking about banning same sex. This is dictator shit guys. I’m not ok with this. Oh speaking of dictator, Trump was called a facist by his former Cheif of staff. And Trump complemented Hitler!! I am not okay with this. I’m not okay with hearing about children ripped away from their families at the borders, having Trans existence denied, books being banned (just to name a few thing) I am watching the erasure of the Civil Rights Movement, and it scares me, no it terrifies me. Why the hell can’t people who have uterus’s get an abortion, why does the Supreme Court get to decide which love is vallid, and which is not? Why does a man who’s a convicted felon, a man whose been impeached twice, and a rapist, get to come close in the election polls, why does he have a *chance* at being elected my *my president * that shit terrifies me. I feel like Kira watching as the life she knows breaks away and dissolves into tyranny, but it doesn’t have to be! We can keep fighting!! If Trump was elected, we could still keep fighting, but obviously that girl is a whole lot of werk, and we’d have to do a whole lot of work to get him out again. But if Kamala Harris wins, we won’t have do so much! My father told me there’s so much potential for change with just what Harris can do to the Supreme Court alone!! She can halt this incoming barge of legislation, and all we have to do, just like Kira is act. It took the suicide of a Bajoran Vedic to wake Kernal Kira up. It took me years of hearing about deaths on the news, and having my rights taken away, and a thousand other atrocities for me to do one small thing. But I think my eyes are open now, I’m going to do my best too keep them that way. To all my Deep Space Niners, please reblog this, we can be our own Shakar resistance Cell just by spreading the message. We can make change, just by keeping ourselves informed, and Gosh Darn it, by voting!! There’s still time!! We still can make change!! I belive in all of us!! That we won’t take this shit Trump is giving us standing, that we will protest back! in solidarity,

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?

I like if she's there! first and foremost xD and of course when she's a center for the fic. I'm not a huuuge fic reader, and often more a slice of life or character instrospection reader, and of course a huge shippy reader, so i do love when she's queer. I do like it when she's a bit hmm... stiff at first? like, not allowing herself to feel all the things she's actually feeling?

in general i just love when they expand on things that weren't shown in the show, like showing her work out/train martial arts, showing her in her off time, showing her in relation to the other characters, especially those that she didn't get a lot of interaction with (thinking especially of Teyla and Ronon)... yeah

oh and i love when she swears :)

idk if there's something definite that i don't like, i'm sure there is tons of stuff but i can't think of anything right now :)

She definitely reminds me of Janeway, even tho she's a civilian and muuuch more diplomatic than Janeway, but I think they are in a similar situation: lightyears away from home, responsible for a crew of misfits, not really allowing themselves to fully integrate into the family (even tho they are part of it, they are just a bit... awkward there i guess, because they think they can't allow themselves to indulge due to their position), they both have a fiancé back on earth??? both love dogs, both love red... need i go on? xD

The speeder whines protestingly underneath Seven as she leans against the seat back, wind whipping against her face, trying to keep her head low as she snakes her arm out and fires.

The other speeder swerves as the shot impacts harmlessly on a rock formation past them, the orange heads of the Ferengi just showing over the visor and silhouetted against the distinctive refrigeration suits of the Breen standing up and aiming behind them. -- In the end, there's nothing but them and the repulsors and the sky

Character Spotlight: Kira Nerys

We’re moving on in our character spotlight series from our favorite war criminal captain to one of the most well developed characters from the onset, Colonel Kira Nerys. From the moment we meet her in “Emissary,” we know exactly who Kira is, and the show wisely sends her on a complex journey within that grey area between terrorist and resistance fighter. Get you a Bajoran who can do both.

Ensign Ro may have set the mold for the Bajorans, but Kira grew outside of it and we’re so glad to get her perspective. So pick up your Bajoran phaser and get ready to take aim at some fascists as we celebrate A Star to Steer Her By’s favorite crinkly-nosed, red jumpsuit-clad militia officer in our Best and Worst Moments list below and on this week’s podcast (jump to 56:47). Walk with the Prophets, my child.

Best moments

What other show gives you a zombie space pope? There’s more going on for Kira in season one than for other characters because she really rocks it from the start. And Nana Visitor has the chops to give that special nuance to a character like this, especially in emotional scenes like her breakdown when she accidentally gets Kai Opaka killed in “Battle Lines,” and the moment she has with her reanimated corpse is nothing short of stunning.

If I leave here, I’ll die Speaking of great moments from season one, Kira makes the hard decision in “Progress” to save Mullibok’s life by ruining said life. Over the episode, she bonds with the obstinate Jeraddo farmer by helping him build his kiln only to destroy it in the end and set fire to his house to force him to relocate, and it’s clear it tears her up inside. Bajorans really never win.

Enough good people have already died. I won’t help kill another. But perhaps the best thing to come out of the season (and to some, the whole show overall) is her character arc in the stunning “Duet.” Kira spends so much of the show battling her Cardassian demons (figuratively and literally), that seeing her grow to accept that some individuals may be redeemable is captivating, heart-breaking, and truly impressive (and have we mentioned it’s only season one?).

A new meaning to being selfish We would be remiss if we didn’t include at least a mention of the excellent and mesmerizing performance Visitor gives as Intendant Kira in episodes like “Crossover.” Say what you will about the mirror universe (and we have), but Kira is a wonder to behold and the chemistry between her and herself is like lightning in a bottle. Zap!

Cardassians LOVE cosmetic surgery Speaking of mirrors, imagine waking up and the face looking back at you in the mirror is the thing you hate most. Kira’s relationship with Cardassians continues to evolve in the wondrous “Second Skin,” in which she bonds with her fake daddy Tekeny Ghemor, foils a Cardassian plot, and discovers a resistance cell within Central Command – her favorite!

I was playing a married woman This is one of those cute little Kira moments from the show that tickles us, but in “The Way of the Warrior,” it is just too hilarious that her response to being wooed by Lancelot (assumably while playing Guenivere) in the holodeck is to slug him. It’s so in character that we have to applaud it. Kira is always the first to choose violence, after all, though sometimes that can be a downside.

Major, tell me another story Kira spends the second half of “Starship Down” tending to a badly concussed Sisko, and working through character conflict. As I harped on in the Sisko post, Ben is double-fisting roles as both space station commander and Emissary to the Prophets, and that comes with deep significance to Bajorans like Kira, and this is her chance to talk to him about it. Love that for her!

The life you’re choosing isn’t for her There are a ton of great moments between Kira and Ziyal, from saving her life in “Indiscretion” to encouraging her painting in “Sons and Daughters,” but the one we’re highlighting comes from “Return to Grace.” Kira sees that Ziyal is on a dangerous path if she stays with her father, and the bond they’ve established makes her advocate she move to DS9. There’s truly no safe space for the girl, but Kira does all she can.

The baby just had a change of address Thank the Prophets the show didn’t introduce yet another baby when Nana Visitor got IRL pregnant. That’d be way too many babies, so it was rather ingenious to move the O’Brien baby over to Kira in “Body Parts.” And it also highlights just how like family this crew has become. Kira really takes one for the team by agreeing to incubate Kirayoshi for Keiko. Now if only their characters talked more…

I owed it to my father to get it right this time Yet another great character-development episode for Kira comes in “Ties of Blood and Water” when she learns that Tekeny Ghemor – her fake dad and one of our favorite Cardassians! – was up to some shady stuff in his past. And while this alters the relationship between the two of them, Kira again accepts how he’s changed since then to be with him as he dies.

Romulans gotta scheme! Come season seven, the Romulans have gotten added to the mix thanks to some nefarious doings by Sisko and Garak. And Kira is left to deal with their constant scheming. Typical Romulans! Throughout “Image in the Sand” and “Shadows and Symbols,” Kira stares down Senator Cretak in a huge game of galactic chicken, and Cretak blinks first.

Don’t drink the Kool-Aid Our final great Kira moment is also the last time she ever sees Dukat. In “Covenant,” he’s leading his own little pah-wraith cult, and when the going gets tough, the tough gets really Jonestown-y. Kira literally leaps in and stops the whole assembly from ritual suicide, revealing that Dukat had a placebo pill for himself and he’d had them all charmed. Stupid sexy Dukat.

Worst moments

Maybe the ends justify the means? One of Kira’s strengths is also frequently one of her biggest faults, and that’s how very wide her ethical grey area is. She’s able to justify doing lots of pretty messed up things, like a certain captain I could name, and we see this pretty early on in “Babel” when she intentionally infects Surmak Ren with aphasia disease and holds him hostage to find a cure. That’s pretty brutal.

Bajor is not Kentanna For most of “Sanctuary,” it’s rather nice watching Kira befriending Haneek and the other Skrrean refugees. Until they express interest in immigrating to Bajor, and then Kira’s NIMBY side really comes out. It’s not a good look, Kira, especially for someone whose people were in a very similar plight until very recently. And frankly, Bajor could use the laborers.

It’s like stepping on ants, Odo Because of that wide ethical grey area, we’ve noticed that Kira is almost always the first person to advocate just killing whatever the danger of the week is, no matter the consequences. In “Playing God,” an episode about killing Cardassian voles, she’s quick to jump to the option of killing the tiny proto-universe, even when Dax expresses she’s found sentient life in it. Yikes.

The people have chosen Winn We know from “Battle Lines,” mentioned earlier, that Kira has a super soft spot for Kai Opaka, and also probably feels guilty for trapping her on zombie planet a little. But it’s just a bad idea to let Bareil take the fall for some shady doings in “The Collaborator” because it sets up Winn for the win (wow, I didn’t even try to do that) in the big kai election, lest she sully Opaka’s name.

The distant memory of a touch It would be an understatement to say Kira’s taste in men isn’t great (and that’s not even including the fascist she ends up with!). The first of her various men is Bareil, who’s fine but boring as hell. Certainly not worth forcing Julian to keep him alive against all his medical ethics in “Life Support.” But Kira’s into the vedek, so we’re forced to watch her push his existence to the edge of morality and cringe at what he’s becoming.

Do you like me? Check yes or no. Lucky for us, Bareil is a thing of the past by season four (for now), opening up the opportunity for Kira to make more bad dating decisions. While Odo weeps, she sets her sights on Shakaar in “Crossfire” and viewers at home roll our eyes at how high school the whole ordeal is. Why have these resistance cell leaders downgraded to petty relationship drama? It’s beneath them.

Kira’s edgy artist phase We’ve said it myriad times before, but Bajor is a cultural disaster. When Akorem shows up in “Accession” and declares he’s making Bajor great again by reinstating their rigid caste system, it’s clear that Kira is uncomfortable but still refuses to oppose it. This is a Sisko episode, after all. Even though she can’t sculpt worth a damn, she goes along with the d’jarras like a sheep.

A little lower While Kira is surrogating the O’Brien baby, she and Miles randomly develop feelings for each other only because of their constant proximity in “Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places.” That’s just gross and unnecessary. Nothing again Miles, but men and women are allowed to be friends without wanting to bone. Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones.

The phantom of Cardassia This one always bothered me. After several seasons of growth as a character, Kira seemed to have chilled out a little in her constant desire to murder Cardassians. So when “The Darkness and the Light” introduces a blast from the past whom Kira would otherwise have at least some empathy for, it strikes me as a character regression for her to fall back on thoughtlessly killing like she used to.

Same face, different universe Kira regesses again in “Resurrection” when a new Bareil is barking up her tree. Oh mirror universe, what have we done to deserve this? Sure, mirror Bareil is at least less bland than the original recipe, but who the hell is this Kira immediately falling for a boy in less than a day? That’s just not the character (that’s Jadzia, if anyone, whom we’ll discuss next week). Kira’d kick his ass.

That’s not what your mom said last night I may have given Sisko a little bit of guff for allowing this too, but I’ve got to give Kira even more. Whose first reaction when Dukat makes a yo mama joke in “Wrongs Darker than Death or Night” is to GO BACK IN TIME to check  on your mother’s sexual history??? What the hell, Kira???
