SPANKING ON TV #2
P’tang, Yang, Kipperbang (1982) d. Michael Apted
Tumblr media
A classic touching-toes, three-stroke caning in the Head’s study for 14-year-old Duckworth after “being persistently late three times.
The film is set shortly after the end of World War 2. Duckworth is a socially awkward lad who’s obsessed with cricket and a girl in his class called Ann. He daydreams his life is narrated by cricket commentator John Arnott. He sees a golden opportunity when he and Ann are cast in the school play together and realises they have to kiss in the final scene.

This is a charming, coming-of-age drama with some funny scenes about the daft things teen boys get up to. It’s got a good cast, including an early film role for Alison Steadman. Pete Beale’s in it, and that sergeant bloke off The Bill! It was broadcast in the UK as part of Channel 4’s launch night in 1982 and I remember watching it live with my dad.
The traditional bending-over position is a simple but effective means for a boy to present his backside for caning. The enduring “touching toes” description is a misnomer really, as most boys would grasp their knees or ankles. Speaking from experience, the former is better in terms of maintaining stability!
Amusingly the Head is a bit of a perfectionist and keeps changing canes between strokes, so each one ends up being more painful than the last. Poor Duckworth thinks he’s got away with two but must stay in position for a third, which ends up being a real stinger. The first stroke is shown but it’s audio only/reaction shots for the other two with a very funny commentary from John Arnott.
The message to report to the Head’s study is delivered during a PE lesson, which is why Duckworth is wearing his gym kit. There’s a funny exchange with the PE teacher when he’s told to get going and he says, “But, sir, I’ll need my pants.” For non-British readers, boys weren’t allowed to wear underwear during physical education for reasons such as hygiene or having to sit in wet/muddy pants for the rest of the day, a practice that seems to have persisted well into the 1980s. (Stay tuned for a funny story about this.) Anyway, school shorts of the time were typically thick flannel and lined, so you have to wonder whether writer Jack Rosenthal meant the wily Head had timed Duckworth’s visit for when he’d only be wearing cotton shorts.
John Albasiny was 15 years old when he filmed this and is still acting today. Robert Urquhart, who played the Head, died in 1995.
Here’s the link to the film on YouTube. Fast forward 12 mins to see the Head in action.

Hey Mr. Teapot. I recently saw the beautiful film "Melody" (1971) (aka SWALK) for the first time, and it made me want to watch other films on the theme puppy love. What do you recommend? It can be oldies or new films and it doesn't matter what the country of origin is as long as you can get a hold of the film with English subtitles.
I was thinking about Melody the other day (because it’s star Tracy Hyde was in The Orchard End Murder which I’d watched) and trying to remember if I’d seen it. The storyline seems familiar but I’m really not sure.
Anyway a few films that come to mind featuring “young love” (although some are not featuring protagonists as young as those in Melody) are Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, Richard Ayoade’s Submarine, Bill Forsyth’s Gregory’s Girl, maybe a bit harder to find than the others P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang directed by Michael Apted, and for something rather different Tomas Alfredson’s Let the Right One In! (It’s worth checking if someone comes up with something better in the notes!)

You could say it's a History Boys re-setting of Sherlock, you could say it's 1960s, but really it could be any time up to about 1990 in any Northern British town with a decent grammar school capable of getting a few students through Oxbridge entrance.
Distinct elements also of 'P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang'.
Mrs Hudson is Sherlock's step-grandmother.

An enchanting comedy set in post-World War Two Britain. It studies a teenage boy's relationships and period of sexual awakening. A cricket-obsessed adolescent, Alan Duckworth lusts after his classmate Ann. When the pair score the lead roles in the school's drama production, Alan finds himself in the awkward situation of having to pull off a proper snog scene with his real-life crush.

Tumblr media
The pianist and composer DAVID EARL was born in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in 1951. Growing up in Cape Town, he attended Rondebosch Boys' Preparatory and High Schools, during which time he studied the piano with the British émigré Sona Whiteman, a disciple of Tobias Matthay. At 16 he broadcast a professional recital for the SABC, and a year later made his concerto debut with the then Cape Town Symphony Orchestra.
He moved to London when he was 19, and while studying the piano and composition at Trinity College of Music, gave the first of a number of solo piano recitals at Wigmore Hall, and broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
After seven years based in Oxford, he settled in Cambridge where for over twenty years he has taught piano performing to under-graduates at Cambridge University, as well as supervising Tripos composition students.
David's professional career as a composer began in 1980 with the premiere of Chéri, an hour-long ballet commissioned by Peter Darrell for The Scottish Ballet and given at that year's Edinburgh Festival and frequently revived, with a new production by The Hong Kong Ballet in 1989. To date there have been six more ballet commissions, including two for the South African CAPAB Ballet - The Return of the Soldier (1982) and Abelard and Heloise (1985), both choreographed by Veronica Paeper - and a full-evening Macbeth (1991) for Ballet de Santiago in Chile, with choreography by Andre Prokovsky. More recently David collaborated with the Royal Ballet choreographer Vanessa Fenton on two works given in Cambridge in 2009, one of which was included in a Senate House gala marking the 800th anniversary of Cambridge University.
Piano Concerto No 1 appeared in 1980, followed by a Two-Piano Concerto (1986), concertos for Violin (1991), Cello (1996), Trumpet (2005), Piano Concerto No 2 (2007) a Double Violin Concerto (2011) a Clarinet Concerto (2012) a Double Bass Concerto (2015) and Viola Concerto (2016). Among choral compositions is a symphonic setting of Wordsworth's Intimations of Immortality, a cyclic setting of George Herbert – Man's Medley, and Island Owl, for soloists, children’s chorus and orchestra.
Chamber works include two sonatas each for violin and cello, a Viola and piano Sonata, a Clarinet Trio, Piano Quintet, String Quartet, Quintet for Cor Anglais and Strings, and, for solo piano, four suites – Mosaics, Gargoyles, Mandalas, and Darshanas - as well as Oxymorons: 24 Preludes. Music for film includes P'Tang Yang Kipperbang directed by Michael Apted, and Arthur's Hallowed Ground, directed by the veteran cinematographer Freddie Young. In June 2012 a setting of Rupert Brooke's famous poem The Old Vicarage, Grantchester, for baritone, chorus and orchestra, commissioned by Dame Mary Archer to mark the poem's centenary, was premiered in Cambridge.
David has been fortunate in collaborating with young musicians at the start of their careers – Tasmin Little, Martin Roscoe, Alexander Chaushian and Jamie Campbell gave the first performances of, respectively, the Violin Concerto, Violin Sonata No 1, the Cello Concerto and Violin Sonata No 2.
The CD of the Cello Sonata and Mandalas Piano Suite received a Gramophone Editor's recommendation rosette (May 2008), and was nominated by International Piano magazine for best new music recording.
In 2001 David was ordained into The Western Buddhist Order, and given the name   Akāshadeva (“deity of etheric space”). In addition to Mandalas, other works with a Buddhist theme include Invocation to Manjugosha for Violin and Piano, as well as settings of Kukai's To a Nobleman in Kyoto, Milarepa’s Meeting and Parting, and The Buddha’s O let us live in joy.
Recent first performances include the Clarinet Concerto, premiered in October 2013 in Durban, South Africa, with Maria du Toit and the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic under Arjan Tien; and the University of Cape Town Wind Ensemble’s first performance of The Wineland Suite conducted by Alex Fokkens in May 2014. (This work is also available fully orchestrated.) The piano pieces Old Roses, Barcarolle and Song Without Words have been performed and recorded by Renée Reznek.
Within the last few years David has completed two full-length operas: Mary and the Conqueror in which Alexander the Great and Mary Renault meet in the afterlife; and Strange Ghost, composed to mark the centenary of the death of the iconic poet Rupert Brooke. Both have libretti by the Cape Town playwright Juliet Jenkin. The latter opera was premiered in Cambridge in December 2015, directed by Dionysios Kyropoulos, and conducted by Dominic Peckham with James Schouten in the title role. See www.RupertBrookeOpera.com
