Kinugawa is a famous hot springs area. For the nature lover, there is a good hike that goes from Kawaji Onsen Station, through a beautiful gorge and along the Kinugawa River all the way to Kinugawa Onsen. I suggest staying overnight near Kinugawa Onsen Station (which is more developed and has some eateries), taking a train to Kawaji Onsen and walking downstream through the gorge back to Kinugawa Onsen, where you can finish the hike with a comforting hot springs.

#TBT: Nintendo 3DS Round and Round Tamagotchi! Bandai Namco Games x Kinki Nippon Tourist Sponsorship Special

Bandai Japan partnered with travel agency Kinki Nippon to help promote the Nintendo 3DS Round and Round Tamagotchi! game back in May 2014 which included a Tamagotchi merchandise spread along with the game in a hotel room at the Kinugawa Onsen Hotel for daily play.

A pedestrian-only suspension bridge with a total length of about 140 meters connecting the southern part of Kinugawa Onsen Town with Tateiwa.

From the bridge, which is about 40 meters high, you can see the rapids of the Kinugawa River and the lush mountains that weave through the large rocks.

Standing close to the suspension bridge, "Tateiwa" is named for its resemblance to the shield it uses during battles, and its height exceeds 70 meters.

I ordered boiled squid ink, pescatore, margherita, marron chiffon cake, and blood orange juice (^o^)

Boiled squid ink was exquisite (^o^)v

It seems to be a popular restaurant, so it is better to make a reservation beforehand (^o^)v

Mittwoch und Donnerstag: Natur und Kultur!

Wir fahren in den Nikko Nationalpark und besuchen dort den Toshogu-Schrein und den Rinnoji-Tempel. Diese beeindruckende und weitläufige Tempelanlage mit 103 Gebäuden gehört zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe! Ihr kennt bestimmt die drei Affen, die nichts hören, nichts sehen und nichts riechen? Diese kommen aus dieser Anlage in Nikko. Leider bekommen wir die Affenstatuen selber nicht mehr zu Gesicht, da die Tempel hier alle sehr früh schließen und wir erst den starken Regen abwarten mussten, bevor wir uns auf den Weg machen konnten. Nichts desto trotz ist die ganze Anlage atemberaubend schön und strotzt nur so vor Fotomotiven. Auch die japanische Kleinstadt -83000 Einwohner- Nikko hat ein paar schöne traditionelle Geschäfte und Häuser zu bieten.

Am Abend erlebe ich in unserem Hostel mein persönliches Tageshighlight: das Onsen. Onsen sind warme Bäder, gespeist aus heißen Quellen in der jeweiligen Region. Gebadet wird vollständig nackt, vorher wäscht man sich auf einem Hocker sitzend gründlich. Die Onsen sind nach Geschlechtern getrennt. Es gibt öffentliche Onsen, aber unser Hostel hat eigene - und zwar draußen hinter dem Haus, direkt am Hang mit freiem Blick in die grüne Natur und dem Rauschen des Flusses in den Ohren. Herrlich! (Wenn auch ziemlich heiß, wenn man bedenkt, dass bereits die Luft fast 30 Grad hat...)

Den Donnerstag verbringen wir mit Laufen und Wandern entlang des Kinugawa Flusses. Todesmutig überqueren wir auf einer seeeehr hohen und wackeligen Hängebrücke den Fluss, genießen die Aussicht von einem am Hang gelegenen observatory und fahren ein Stück weiter mit einer Gondel den Berg hinauf. Hier gibt es auch Affen zu bestaunen, was mich persönlich eher quält, da einige von ihnen in viel zu kleinen Käfigen auf Beton vor sich hinvegetieren. Wir machen hier oben auch noch eine kleine Wanderung, fahren anschließend mit der Gondel wieder hinunter und lassen uns vom Zug zurück nach Hause bringen. Am Abend habe ich 15km auf der Wanderuhr, und das bei praller Sonne!
