Some of you may remember the queer comics documentary, No Straight Lines, in which I make a 30 second appearance? This excellent film is now available to stream for free on the PBS website and will be available for the next 3 months!
This documentary is about five queer comic book artists journeying from the underground comix scene to mainstream acceptance. The highlighted artists are Alison Bechdel, Howard Cruse, Mary Wings, Jen Camper, and Rupert Kinnard, but there are dozens of other short appearances by queer cartoonists from the Bay Area, most of whom are my friends and my peers. Here's the blurb from the PBS website:
When Alison Bechdel received a coveted MacArthur Award for her best-selling graphic memoir Fun Home, it heralded the acceptance of LGBTQ+ comics in American culture. From DIY underground comix scene to mainstream acceptance, meet five smart and funny queer comic book artists whose uncensored commentary left no topic untouched and explored art as a tool for social change.

On May 28th, 1944, Lieutenant Colonel Clay Kinnard lead a flight of inexperienced P-51 pilots on a mission to escort B-17 bombers to their target.
Kinnard was a leader who deeply cared for every man he led into combat. Like a mother hen looking over her chicks, he kept the same watchful eye on his young green pilots.
Unfortunately, Kinnard had mechanical issues and had to abort his flight. As his new pilots continued their mission, he told them to stick together and don't scatter.
As the young P-51 pilots approached the bombers, the Germans must of sensed the inexperience and pounced! Without experienced leadership, the young American pilots scattered... The Me-109s began their hunt...
Upon hearing that two of his boys failed to return, Kinnard was heard yelling...
"Damn, damn, damn! If I'd been there, it might have been different!"
― U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Clay Kinnard 354th Group Lead, P-51B Mustang.
Kinnard was an ace with 8 enemy aircraft destroyed in aerial combat. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Croix-de Guerre, and the Distinguished Unit Citation.

#WW2: Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe and Lieutenant Colonel Harry Kinnard II in Bastogne, Belgium (late Dec 1944).📖 “Aw, nuts!” “That’s what General Anthony Clement McAuliffe said to (Nazis) who demanded the surrender of the encircled 101st Airborne at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944… General McAuliffe’s response came to typify the "can-do” American attitude, despite the tough circumstances, demonstrated so ably by 101st Division in Bastogne. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for leading the defense of the city against overwhelming German strength in numbers and materiel. —- McAuliffe went on to command the 103rd Division in January 1945 until the end of the war. New story in Politics from Time: Kamala Harris Skipping South Carolina Forum Over Plan to Give Justice Award to President Trump
(COLUMBIA, S.C.) — Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris is pulling out of a South Carolina criminal justice forum over organizers’ handling of President Donald Trump’s appearance.
Soon after her announcement, the mayor of South Carolina’s capital city, Columbia, and a co-host of the event said he was organizing an alternative forum at Benedict College, a historically black college, for any candidates who wished to participate, with Harris’ campaign confirming she would be among them.
“I honestly wanted to give everyone else another option,” Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin told The Associated Press about his event, which will be held with the theme “Students First” in a college chapel.
As of Friday night, Benjamin said Cory Booker and Joe Biden, and likely Bernie Sanders, planned to attend his event, as well as the original forum.
Earlier Friday, Harris’ campaign said she would skip the 20/20 Bipartisan Justice Center event Saturday in objection to the group’s decision to give Trump its Bipartisan Justice Award, which she received in 2016.
“Donald Trump is a lawless President,” the California senator said in a statement. “Not only does he circumvent the laws of our country and the principles of our Constitution, but there is nothing in his career that is about justice, for justice, or in celebration of justice.”
Trump received the award Friday for his work on criminal justice reform with the First Step Act, which has allowed thousands of nonviolent offenders to gain early release from federal prison.
Harris had been among 10 Democrats expected at the forum over the weekend.
She also complained that only a handful of Benedict students were ticketed for Trump’s appearance. Most seats were occupied by administration officials and Trump supporters.

Today, filmmaker Vivian Kleiman and comics artist and advocate Justin Hall announced that their feature-length documentary film, No Straight Lines: The Story of Queer Comics, will launch a Kickstarter fundraiser in late April. This new effort is aimed at completing filming of the project, which tells the story of how LGBTQ comics evolved from a marginalized underground scene—offering uncensored commentary on everything from coming out to the AIDS crisis to gender politics—to one with worldwide, mainstream recognition.
The fundraising campaign has set a goal of $38,000 and is scheduled to launch on April 23rd. It will offer a variety of rewards to backers from large to small, including social media shout-outs, signed graphic novels, original artwork, dinner with the film creators, invitations to private screenings of the work-in-progress, and more.
In 2012, cartoonist Justin Hall put together the anthology No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics, which featured milestone contributions by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender comics creators from the 1970s to the present, and shared the story of the queer comics community.
Now, Justin’s Lambda Literary Award winning and Eisner Award nominated collection is the inspiration for a new documentary film directed and produced by Peabody Award winning and Sundance and Emmy nominated filmmaker Vivian Kleiman. This film will bring the stories from the comics off the page and give viewers a personal introduction to the vibrant artists, writers, and activists who have paved the way for queer comics’ dynamic present and fabulous future.
The team has been developing the project for some time and have already received grants from the California Humanities, the San Francisco Foundation, and the Berkeley Film Foundation, along with contributions from private donors. Filming is over halfway done, including extensive shoots with Alison Bechdel (Fun Home) and her mentor Howard Cruse (Stuck Rubber Baby), as well as interviews with a selection of young cartoonists at the Queers & Comics Conference in San Francisco, and more.
They’ve lined up financial support to complete the editing phase, but first they need to capture all the footage that will make this project shine. Cartoonists being notoriously shy, the filmmakers have to bring their crew to places like the snowy hills of Vermont and the rainy streets of Portland, Oregon, to record these important, untold stories.
Meeting their campaign goal will allow the filmmakers to complete principle filming on the project, which will include travel and accommodations; producer, director, and director of photography costs; sound and lighting equipment; insurance; bookkeeping; production assistance; and admin expenses.
Support from the community will make it possible to film with longtime LGBTQ comics legends like Rupert Kinnard (BB and the Diva), and interview pioneering web cartoonist Scout Tran (Failing Sky). The filmmakers have plans for additional shoots if they exceed their funding goals.
In advance of the campaign, the filmmakers have set up a mailing list to provide news updates and behind-the-scenes peeks, and encourage supporters to sign up. People can join the mailing list, as well as watch the film trailer, on the documentary’s website: nostraightlinesthefilm.com

Rest At Peace In West Virginia; Or Not
The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals affirmed an order to remove the mortal remains of a World War I Medal of Honor winner to a veterans cemetery.
The petition was filed by another MOH hero otherwise unconnected to his fellow hero
This appeal arises from a petition filed in the Circuit Court of Mason County seeking authorization to disinter the remains of Chester Howard West, a World War I Medal of Honor recipient, and bury him with full military honors at the Gold Star Family Memorial Monument located within the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Institute, West Virginia (“Veterans Cemetery”). Hershel Woodrow Williams, a Medal of Honor recipient, filed the petition for Mr. West to be recognized as a recipient of the highest award a citizen can receive for bravery and valor. In an order dated March 23, 2016, the Circuit Court of Mason County granted Mr. Williams’s petition.
Petitioner Roger VanSickle urges this Court to reverse the order below on the grounds that the circuit court lacks the authority to rule on the question of disinterment of Mr. West’s remains. Alternatively, Mr. VanSickle argues that the circuit court abused its discretion in concluding that the equities favor disinterment over the wishes of the surviving spouse at the time of Mr. West’s death and the living VanSickle family relatives.
Mr. Williams argues that the circuit court properly exercised its equitable jurisdiction and carefully balanced the equities in favor of disinterment of Mr. West’s remains. He contends that Mr. West’s remains should be moved to the Veterans Cemetery so that he is honored for his heroic service and his grave is properly maintained.
On the opening day of the Meuse-Argonne offensive, the deceased
While making his way through a thick fog, his advance was halted by direct and unusual machine gun fire from two guns. Without aid, he at once dashed through the fire and, attacking the nest, killed two of the gunners, one of whom was an officer. This prompt and decisive hand-to-hand encounter on his part enabled his company to advance farther without the loss of a man.
He survived the Great War and married Elizabeth VanSickle. He was shot and killed by one Sam McClausland on May 20, 1935.
He had laid at rest in the VanSickle family cemetery ever since until
In 2015, a Boy Scout learned of Mr. West’s Medal of Honor status and burial in Mason County and sought to locate the VanSickle family cemetery as an Eagle Scout project. The Boy Scout, with the help of family members and other scouts, located the cemetery and cleared it. The work included removal of a large oak tree that had fallen and damaged two of the headstones, including Mr. West’s headstone.
The circuit court exercised its equitable discretion in favor of disinterment.
The court here affirmed and has sent Mr. West to his new place of honor .
...the record contains no evidence of living blood relatives of Mr. West. While Mr. VanSickle filed an objection to Mr. Williams’s petition to disinter Mr. West’s remains and others testified at the hearing, all of those objecting to the removal have no direct, familial connection to Mr. West. Mr. West’s surviving spouse remarried and died over sixty-five years ago, leaving no documented sentiment as to her own burial with her first husband. The VanSickle family cemetery is now overgrown and neglected in a remote section of a public wildlife management area owned by the State. To date, no one on Mr. West’s behalf has asserted any right to enter into the [burial site] Cornstalk WMA to provide upkeep to the cemetery and particularly the gravesite of this Medal of Honor recipient.
On the other hand, upon discovery of Mr. West’s remains, Mr. Williams has expended time and energy to arrange for persons qualified to undertake Mr. West’s disinterment with dignity and care, transport his remains with honor, reinter them with full military honors, and provide perpetual care for his gravesite. We understand that the VanSickle family has been denied the opportunity to enter Cornstalk WMA with the necessary equipment to keep the cemetery in the condition deserving of their loved ones. The fact remains that the cemetery where he is buried is in a location where perpetual care is highly unlikely. Mr. Williams has demonstrated the integrity and capacity to provide a most suitable and deserving resting place for Mr. West’s remains.
A moving dissent by Chief Justice Loughry
In short, the exhumation of Mr. West’s earthly remains is completely unnecessary to fulfill Mr. Williams’s admirable wish to honor Mr. West’s distinguished military service. In fact, the circuit court’s order references the Gold Star Family Memorial Monument established by the Medal of Honor Foundation within The Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery. If that particular monument cannot be employed in some manner to honor Mr. West’s memory and status as a Medal of Honor recipient, then perhaps another monument could be erected in the cemetery to honor not only Mr. West, but all West Virginians who receive the Medal of Honor but who either have been or will be laid to rest elsewhere.
Not only is the majority’s decision both legally and equitably wrong, I am deeply concerned that a dangerous precedent has been set that threatens the sanctity of burial in this state. Will third-parties now have an imprimatur to seek the disinterment of any person with whom they have no relationship, either legal, familial, or otherwise, if their purpose is sufficiently laudable? Further, will a laudable purpose alone be sufficient, or will an ill-maintained cemetery also be required for court-ordered disinterment? Moreover, by what standards will a circuit court determine whether the purpose for disinterment is sufficiently commendable or whether a cemetery’s maintenance is sufficiently inadequate to warrant disinterment?
Justice Workman also dissented
In this case, we confront the question of whether a person with honorable intentions but absolutely no personal connection to or familial relationship with a deceased person has a unilateral right to remove the deceased’s remains, contrary to both the wishes of his widow and his remaining kin. The majority permits this result in the face of such familial objection ostensibly because it agrees that a stranger to the deceased will provide a resting place more befitting the deceased than his family.
An American hero, First Sergeant Chester Howard West (hereinafter “Sgt. West”) was the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his courageous service at the age of 20 during battle as a member of the 363rd Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army 91st Division. Sgt. West survived the war, but died seventeen years later, still a young man at age 37, leaving a young widow, Maggie VanSickle. Maggie made the decision to bury her husband in the VanSickle family cemetery in Mason County, and hehas been at his eternal rest for now more than eighty-two years.
Hershel Woodrow Williams (hereinafter “Mr. Williams”), another American hero and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, discovered that Sgt. West’s gravesite was not well-cared for in the VanSickle family cemetery, which is located in a remote area of Mason County within the Chief Cornstalk Wildlife area which is owned and managed by the State. Mr. Williams unilaterally decided that Sgt. West’s remains should be removed to the Donald C. Kinnard cemetery—a location which Mr. Williams believes to be a more honored resting place. The lower court and the majority permit this disinterment by Mr. Williams on the basis of a weighing of the equities, finding that the VanSickle family cemetery is not a “place of honor” and that by being removed to the Kinnard cemetery, he may be more appropriately honored and potentially re-connected with “lost family member[s].”
This analysis is simplistic and to some appealing, but there is a major obstacle to this reasoning: the important concept in American jurisprudence called“standing,” which the majority does not even address...
In this matter, despite his noble intentions, Mr. Williams lacks standing because he fails to articulate a legally cognizable interest and threatened or actual injury entitling him to remove Sgt. West’s remains.

Democrats Favor More Access to Capital for Black Businesses
Four Democrats vying for their party's presidential nomination honed in on the economic concerns of the black community during a forum Saturday in South Carolina, a state where nonwhite voters will play a major role in next year's primary election.
Appearing on stage one at a time, Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, and former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke all stressed the need to increase access to capital for black business owners as part of a broader effort to address wealth inequality.
Judges Absolves Bolsonaro's Attacker, Cite Mental Illness
Warren expounded on what she's called her tax on "ultra-millionaires," which she says would fund her education proposals, including student debt cancellation for many and additional funding for historically black colleges and universities.
"It's about building opportunity," Warren said at the forum sponsored by the Black Economic Alliance, noting that she feels her plan would be met with support even from some Republicans. "They understand that this economy is badly broken."
Hong Kong Leader Delays Unpopular Bill; Activists Want More
Warren opened her remarks in Charleston with a moment of remembrance for the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church shooting, four years ago this weekend, in which nine black churchgoers were killed during Bible study.
Buttigieg focused on increasing the number of federal government contracts awarded to black-owned businesses, saying this would provide a major boost.
Court Rules Against Trump on Immigrant Teen Abortion Policy
Asked what he would do to increase his outreach to black voters — an area where Buttigieg has acknowledged he has work to do — he said he's making an effort to get to know them.
"We have to have an authentic encounter with people," Buttigieg said, noting that events like the forum were a piece of that agenda.
O'Rourke said he would push for more affordable housing options, giving a nod to Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin's efforts in the state capital.
"We're going to complement extraordinary local leadership with federal resources and funding," he said.
The last to address the group and the only black candidate at the forum, Booker said he wants as president to address inequalities in all sectors of America, although "poverty is disproportionately impacting communities of color."
Noting, as he often does, that he lives in a low-income community himself, Booker said he's more in tune with people struggling with issues like skyrocketing rents.
"This isn't just about African American communities," Booker said.
Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Bernie Sanders of Vermont sent videos outlining some of their plans for addressing economic issues pertinent to the black community.
Before the forum, O'Rourke, Booker and Buttigieg spent time with striking McDonald's workers in the Charleston area who want the company to allow its employees to organize. A $15 national minimum wage has become a popular Democratic campaign promise, but the party itself is split over putting it in place.
Ahead of the candidates' appearances, Tony Coles, co-chairman of the Black Economic Alliance, said the group chose South Carolina because of its prominent position on the presidential primary calendar. The state, where the majority of Democratic primary voters are non-white, holds the first balloting with a largely black electorate.
In the 2018 midterms, Coles said, the alliance spent $3.8 million on efforts to increase black voter registration and turnout.
