On December 1st 1787, the first modern lighthouse in Scotland was lit at Fraserburgh.
Made by Thomas Smith and Robert Stevenson at Kinnaird Head, the lighthouse was built on top of a 16th-century castle, and is now Scotland’s Lighthouse Museum.Kinnaird Head near Fraserburgh, built on an 16th Century castle, was the first lighthouse to be put into operation by the Commissioners of Northern Lights, and sustained the most powerful lamps of their time.
The lamps were 17 whale oil filled burners and were said to be visible from 14 miles away. The lighthouse was constructed by Thomas Smith and his son in law Robert Stevenson, grandfather of author Robert Louis Stevenson, with a lantern set at a 120 feet above the sea on a corner of Kinnaird Head Castle. Each oil-burning lamp was backed by a parabolic reflector and arranged in three horizontal lines to produce a powerful beam for seamen working some of the toughest waters in Europe.
Previously, coal fires had generally been used to guide sailors to safety. Mr James Park, a ship’s master, was appointed “Keeper of the light” at 1/- per night, The appointment was made on condition he had another person with him at the lighthouse every night, who he was to instruct in cleaning the lanterns and lighting the lamps. Whale oil was brought to Kinnaird Head by Smith, a tin smith of Broughty Ferry, which was a major whaling port of the day.
In 1824, a new lighthouse tower was built within the original castle tower with Robert Stevenson building a new lantern and reflector array.
In 1929, another first was recorded for Kinnaird Head when it took possession of a radio beacon. During WWI, enemy bombers struck the lighthouse only once despite repeated, heavy bombardments on the surrounding area due to Fraserburgh’s ammunition works. Records show that on 19 February 1941, two bombs from an aircraft exploded 50 yards from the Lighthouse Buildings. Damage included 41 panes of broken glass.
The Wine Tower at the lighthouse is the only surviving remnant of the old castle, and in fact is the oldest building in all Fraserburgh. Legend tells us that Isobel the daughter of Alexander Fraser, 8th laird of Philorth had fallen in love with a servant piper, and that the laird was not happy about this. So to separate the two the laird had the piper tied-up in the cave under the Wine Tower known as Selches Hole (Seals Hole). The laird then locked-up his daughter in the uppermost floor of the tower and retired to Kinnaird Castle.
Unfortunately for the servant there was an abnormally high tide due to a storm, and the poor man drowned. When Isobel the laird’s daughter was informed of her lover’s fate, she was distraught and committed suicide by jumping from the top of the tower onto the rocks below. The rock that she fell on is still painted red to this day. It is said that Isobel is seen prior to bad weather, and when the weather is bad it is said that you can hear the skirl of the pipes being played by the ghost of the piper for his lost love
The first pic is from 1850 and shows the Lighthouse and Wine Tower are still there,, but the third tower - the Doocot - was demolished soon after the scene was captured.

The original Kinnaird Head Lighthouse is no longer an active light; when the lighthouses were being automated, it was decided to just build a new one next to it and keep the old one as a heritage monument. So the active beacon is the smaller one in the foreground, while the old one built onto the top of the castle doesn't work any more. Not routinely, at least.

Kinnaird Castle
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kinnaird Castle is located in Angus, Scotland. A castle was built on this site in the 15thcentury when the estate was owned by the Carnegie clan. The castle suffered a fire after the Battle of Brechin, which was caused by the Earl of Crawford, who took revenge upon the family for siding with King James II. The castle was repaired after the fire, and in 1555, the castle was extended. In the 17thcentury, when David Carnegie became Lord Carnegie of Kinnaird, Kinnaird Castle was extended again. At this point, the castle was likely an L-shape design with another L-shaped building to the east. The 5thearl was sympathetic to the Jacobites and in 1715, the estate was confiscated by the Crown and passed into the hands of the York Building Company. The York Building Company leased the land and the castle fell into disrepair. The castle was purchased by a distant cousin of the 5thearl in 1764 and he continued to improve the estate, it was his son, James Carnegie who rebuilt the castle into the Victorian baronial style in 1854 and 1862. The family titles were regained in 1855. A fire in 1921, caused damage to some of the oldest sections of the castle, which were rebuilt. The current castle consists of four sections around a central courtyard. Kinnaird Castle has remained the private residence of the Carnegies for over 600 years. The castle sits on 1300 acres of walled parkland and boasts conical turrets, steep roofs, and armorial decorations. The property has formal gardens, a tennis court, a lake, salmon fishing pools, and riverside walks. Kinnaird Castle offers corporate and self-catering accommodations within the Lauderdale Apartment and the Macduff Tower. #Castles #KinnairdCastle #Brechin #Scotland #Angus

Kinnaird Castle, located near Kinnaird, in Perth & Kinross, not to be confused with the much larger seat of that name in Angus, is not hidden away in any large wooded estate but soaring impressively on an open green knoll above the village, still occupied and in good order. It is an interesting and dramatic place, a tall, red stone keep of the 15th century with earlier nucleus, thick-walled, with a small projecting tower or buttress at one corner. Kinnaird was built as a frontier castle to protect the Carse of Gowrie and its people against the Highlanders. It is a royal castle and is reputed to have been built in 1107 (some archeologists think that it is older.) The Kinnaird family lived in the castle from the mid-twelfth century. In 1449, due to a misunderstanding between two hot-tempered Scots (involving the death of a member of the Douglas Clan), Kinnaird was besieged by the Douglas Clan, who managed to break in, loot and wreck the castle. Most of the castle had to be rebuilt in 1450. A lot of the castle fabric today dates from 1450. The basement area dates back to earlier periods.
John Kinnaird of that ilk (15th Laird of Kinnaird) was obliged to sell the family estates of Kinnaird. He resigned the lands and barony of Kinnaird into the hands of the King (James I & VI), who, on 26th March 1618, granted them to John Livingston (a Gentleman of the Kings Bedchamber). The Kinnairds moved to live at Moncur Castle, nearer Inchture (now itself a ruin and abandoned by them for Rossie Priory in the vicinity). When this occurred is not clear. The castle passed to the Colvilles, who in turn, passed it to the  Sir Patrick Threipland, 1st Baronet of Fingask, bought Kinnaird in 1674. Just beforehand, in 1617, James VI on a rare return visit to Scotland, spent some days hunting from here. Later the castle became ruinous, but happily was restored towards the close of the last century.
After some years of occupancy, Kinnaird was abandoned. In 1854, three ladies took pity on the derelict castle and spent a fortune in repairs. In due course, the place was again bought by the Threiplands, who sold it to the present owner, Dr. J. Hand.

Carnegie Clan The name Carnegie derives from the barony of this name in the parish of Carmyllie, Angus. The Carnegies of Southesk, the first family, were previously designated by the Gaelic township name of Balinhard, also in Angus, and are descended from John de Balinhard whose forebears held these lands. The name first appears in records about 1230 in connection with the Abbeys of Arbroath and Balmerino. John, the 1st of Carnegie died in 1370 and was succeeded by John Carnegie of that Ilk. The direct line of this family died out in the mid 16th century and the lands of Kinnaird were acquired by the Carnegies of Kinnaird, Brechin who hence restored the title Carnegie of that Ilk. From this family, John of Kinnaird was killed at Flodden in 1513 and his son Robert was captured at the Battle of Pinkie, knighted on his release and made an Ambassador to France. His son Sir John was loyal to Mary Queen of Scots till her death. He was succeeded by his brother, John whose son David, 8th of Kinnaird was created 1st Earl of Southesk in 1633. The Earldom of Northesk was given to John his brother who descended from Lord Lour, younger brother of the 1st Earl of Southesk, becoming Earls of Ethie. (The North and South Esk rivers cross the county of Angus). The 5th Earl was forfeited after his support of the house of Stuart in the 1715 Rising. He is commemmorated in the song in "The Piper o' Dundee". The 5th Earl had no issue thus the title passed to a cousin Sir James Carnegie of Pitarro. He reinacted the title lost after 1715 and became the 9th Earl of Southesk. The heir by his marriage to Princess Maud inherited the title of Duke of Fife and is second cousin to the Queen. The most famous bearer of the name was Andrew Carnegie, the son of a weaver whose family emigrated to Pennsylvannia. Starting work in a cotton mill at 13 he rose to become one of the leading railroad magnates and the foremost ironmaster in the United States. In his published work "The Gospel of Work" he wrote "The man who dies rich dies disgraced" and hence he spent the remainder of his life distributing his wealth and creating the Carnegie free libraries in Scotland. The present head of the Carnegies, the 11th Earl of Southesk, still lives at the clan seat in Angus; Kinnaird Castle, Brechin. CARNEGIE: The name originates in the Barony of Carnegy in Angus. The Carnegies of that Ilk, originally 'de Ballinhards', descended from Jocelyn de Ballinhard in the 13th century, whose descendant in 1358 obtained ownership of the Barony and adopted the name. In 1409 Duthac de Carnegie acquired the lands of Kinnaird by marriage to the heiress Mariota but perished on the field of Harlaw two years later. John, 4th of Kinnaird, fell with his king at Flodden in 1513 and family loyalty to the House of Stewart gained his successor position as a Lord of Session, and Mary Queen of Scots' ambassador. The 8th Laird, Sir David, was created Lord Carnegie in 1616, and by Charles I made Earl of Southesk in 1633. The Royalist 2nd Earl was imprisoned by Cromwell, and such abiding loyalty to the Stewarts led to the forfeiture of their estates following the 5th Earl's proclamation of the 'Old Pretender' at Montrose in 1715, and his participation in that Rising. This Earl being devoid of issue, the family representation passed to the 3rd Carnegie Baronet of Pitarro who repurchased the estates and to whose descendant the Earldom was restored in 1855 as 9th Earl. The 11th Earl married Princess Maud, daughter of Princess Louise, Duchess of Fife. and such union bringing also the Dukedom of Fife to the family. Almost concurrently with the Southesk Earldom, Sir John Carnegie, Lord Lour, brother of the 1st Earl, acquired the Earldom of Ethie in 1647, but had it altered to 'Northesk' in 1666. Two Northesk Earls were celebrated Admirals, the latter being 3rd-in-Command under Nelson at Trafalgar.

From the earlier common lineage, and from the respective earldoms, many cadet families evolved throughout Angus and Kincardineshire. Perhaps the most universally celebrated of the name was Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) who from humble origin in Dunfermline, Fife, rose to make a vast fortune in railways and steel in America.

Cruden Bay and Slains Castle
Just to give you an idea of where I was I posted this handy dandy screenshot of a map.  Dave and Pam of Aurora Guest House offered to take me from the Kinnaird Head Lighthouse back to my hostel in Aberdeen.  What I did not know was on the way back I would get a chance to see a part of Scotland that I didn’t even know about and would have never gotten to see on a bus or train.
Lucky ME!!!!!
Cruden Bay
Cruden Bay
Cruden Bay
Cruden Bay
Cruden Bay
I need to learn to take better pictures
Dave and or Pam not sure took this of me @Cruden Bay
It was such a lovely day after the clouds melted away
Story of the Bay of Cruden
So, we stopped and took these great pictures.  They had a really nice camera and me?  I had my Samsung Galaxy Tablet.  I broke my phone or rather shattered it to death, LED death on the palace floor at Linlithgow Palace.  Lucky for me I had this tablet or no phone contact with family or any photos would have been as easy.  So, even though the battery was drained on a daily, it did a really, really great job!
After checking out the Bay, we heading to castle ruins which turned out to be Slains Castle.  So much later, after I got back to California and I read about the castle, I discovered that it was a possible inspiration for Bram Stoker and an inspiration for the setting of his tale, Count Dracula!  It was a very famous place in the 19th century and entertained many celebrities, including Bram Stoker.
Kinda creepy castle
Kinda eerie when walking through the ruins
Super cool to walk through those ruins
Lucky Sheri to have met Dave and Pam to take me to Cruden Bay or the Bay of Cruden and to Slains Castle
I most definitely need to go back to Aberdeen
What a view!
Slains Castle up ahead!
Did pirates ever come here?
Slains Castle
Slains Castle
Did Bram Stoker really get inspiration from this castle?
I am sure is was beautiful in its full glory
Looks like a fall would hurt bad!
So this was three stories?
I can imagine the beauty of the sunset here
The beautiful North Sea
I love natures beauty.
I take a lot of scenery pictures
Ok so try to imagine living here
View from inside the castle
Danger!
Another view of the castle
A view from inside as well
and this one too
Hello! I love taking selfies..
By the end of this drive, my poor tablet died and I was not able to take any of my own pictures of the last place Dave and Pam took me before dropping me off at my hostel.
We stopped at a loch along the way
and Dave was taking really neat pictures of the waterfowl and I just admired the beauty.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberdeen.   Our last stop was at the Footdee.
We stopped and walked around the Fittie.  It depends are where you are from how it is pronounced.  I placed a few links from Wikipedia so you might read about this really cool place.  I did not take these pictures below, they are from the creative commons and available for use.  This is just a smidge of they really cool cottages that we saw walking through the Fittie.
These are cottages in the Fittie (creative commons)
Another view of the cottages in the Fittie (creative commons)
Beautiful gardens in the Fittie (creative commons)
All and all it was an incredible day and incredible hosts!  I still count myself so very lucky to have met Dave and Pam and I hope when I return I can stay at their really cool B&B.
