The King of Terrasen
For @marissaalyn Aelin took in a shuddering breath as she looked out over Terrasen. She pinched her arm quickly just to make sure she wasn't dreaming, but when she only felt a jolt of pain and nothing more, her soul began to sing with joy. She was home. There were soft steps from behind her, then Sam was at her side, staring out at her country, the place they would rule together in the years to come. He looked up at her and gave her his trademark grin that revealed every single one of his teeth and made her stomach and heart do backflips. He held out a hand, doing so almost mockingly, to help her down from her horse. Though she was more than capable of getting off the damn thing, she accepted his help anyways. Sam gripped her waist as she hit the ground, then wrapped his fingers around hers. Their hands were the same, marked by scars and callouses that were the product of their former lives as assassins. The only difference was that his hands were slightly larger, but somehow they were still gentle. Still loving. It had only been a few weeks since he had revealed himself to be alive and well, only a few weeks since she had laughed and cried and beaten his chest with her fists and cried some more before demanding why the hell he had stayed away for so long. Only a few weeks since she had kissed him with more passion than she'd ever kissed him before, then beaten him some more, in a completely "why did you do that to me you destroyed me you idiot I loved you so much and you died and left me alone but now you're back and I hate you for doing that to me but I love you more than anything in the entire world so I'm sorry" kind of way. However, he had just revealed his magic to her the night before, and Aelin had to admit, it was amazing. It wasn't magic outright, more of a built-in survival trait, but it was still enough to awe Aelin. Sam had strength magic. He could make himself stronger, could make those around him stronger, or could even surround several people with this strange invisible shield that, as long as he concentrated long enough, couldn't be broken. Not only could he give physical strength to others, but also mental strength. He could place courage in men's hearts, and he could take it away just as easily. It made sense, Aelin told herself, that he had strength magic. It explained why he hadn't been crushed when he destroyed the Pirate Lord's catapult tower in the Dead Islands. It explained how he had managed to somehow escape from Rourke Farran. And it explained how, after all that time, he had still looked for her, still loved her with all his heart. Sam, according to himself and Aedion, was one of the strange and lucky few whose magic hadn't been stifled by the King of Adarlan when he erected the towers. No one understood why, but no one wanted to test Sam and Aedion's claims. Aelin looked up at Sam, scowling at the fact that he was a few inches taller than she. He gave her a smirk that showed he knew exactly what was bothering her. "What's the matter princess? Don't appreciate being looked down upon?" Aelin shook her head, ignoring his teasing. Sam squeezed her side playfully. "So this is Terrasen. The land where you grew up. The kingdom where fairness and justice ruled. Where you are-" He stopped, looking down at her. "Sorry. I just still can't believe it. You, the woman I love, are actually the long-lost Queen of Terrasen. It's amazing." Something akin to awe sparked in his eyes. Aelin gave him a real smile. Not a forced one, not a dangerous one, not even a pained one, but a real, joyful smile. She poked him in the ribs, his brown hair flopping over his forehead as he jumped. She smiled even wider, having forgotten that even though he was one of the deadliest people she knew, he was still ticklish. "You know," she whispered, leaning further into his side, listening to his heartbeat, "you could rule right beside me one day, if you'd like." She looked up at him again as his heartbeat increased. He had a strange look in his eyes. He knew exactly what she was offering. Hell, they had found out almost instantly after meeting again that they were soul mates, forever intertwined with each other. It was almost like a string had been stretched between them, and instantly, they couldn't pull away. It had to happen eventually. The look was gone, and in its place was a cocky grin and shining eyes. "Are you proposing to me, Miss Galathynius?" Aelin smiled right back at him. "It would seem so, Mr. Cortland." "Well then, all due respect, my queen, but don't you think that would be my job?" She pushed him slightly. "Just answer the damn question." "Technically, you never asked me anything." She huffed, then bent down and plucked up a long, skinny blade of grass, and tied the two ends together to form a ring. Then she got down on one knee, and looked up at him, holding the ring of grass out to him. "Sam Cortland, will you become King of Terrasen and by law be married to me? It's a damn good deal, I think you should take it. You get to be king and see my face everyday for the rest of your life. Sam laughed at that, then grabbed her by the arms and pulled her up into a standing position. He kissed her quickly once, twice, three times, then he let her put the makeshift ring on his finger. "I know it's not much but it'll have to do for now," she grumbled. He shook his head and grinned at her. "No, it's perfect. In fact, I think I'll keep it for a good long while." Aelin gave him a look, then turned away. "Smartass." "No I really mean it. It was made by you, and it came from your land. It's a perfectly good ring!" And with that, bickering once again like an old married couple, the future King and Queen of Terrasen turned around and went back to their camp where their friends were waiting, and back to hoping for a future devoid of pain and loss. They wouldn't be disappointed.
