My Top 5 Favorite Godzilla Designs
(poll at end)
I used to say that Millennium Godzilla was my favorite design for the character, but that might not be the case anymore. I still love it, but after thinking about for a good long time, I have found that there are designs that I like better. And I finally narrowed down my top 5 favorites. So here it is. My Top 5 Favorite Godzilla Designs
#5. Millennium Goji.
More specifically, his look in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla Tokyo SOS, AKA "KiryuGoji." The jagged elements and wolf-like face are very sleek, the golden eyes really pop, the teeth are nice and visible, it has pretty much everything going for it. The one thing it's got going against it, and this is just a personal thing for me, is the size. Of all the designs in my top 5, this one is the smallest at a mere 50 meters. Some may argue that that's how big Godzilla should be, but personally, I like my Gojis in the neighborhood of 100 to 120 meters. But aside from that, Millennium Goji is fantastic
#4. Monsterverse Goji
More specifically, his design in 2019 and 2021. It's big, it's menacing, and it looks like it could be an actual animal. Sure the head's a bit small and the teeth could look better, but it still works.
#3. Gemstone Goji
This design is brilliant, in my opinion. It's like a perfect blend of Heisei Goji and Monsterverse Goji. Sometimes the skin looks less like scales and more like lumpy, gray warts. It's not bad, but it can be a little distracting. Most of the time, however, it's not a problem, and this Goji definitely fits with the narrative Gemstone is creating. If they make more media with this design, I am game.
#2. Heisei Goji
You can't go wrong with what is, arguably, the most recognizable design Godzilla has ever had. Some even consider this the definitive design for Godzilla, and I can't say I disagree. Most days, you hear the word "Godzilla," and Hesei Goji comes to mind, especially his look in Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla, AKA "MogeGoji," with his enormous size, expressive eyes, two rows of teeth, and bulging muscles. My only two drawbacks is that sometimes the shoulders are a bit to slim, and sometimes the legs seem a little too massive. It's not a deal breaker, mind you, but it can be distracting from time to time. Still, the Heisei era does have, arguably, the most consistent and recognizable design, and it's definitely makes the top 2.
#1. Final Goji
I have thought about it the entire time I was making this list, and I think I can safely say that Godzilla's design in Godzilla: Final Wars is my personal favorite. The red eyes, the teeth, the longer ears, the slim yet powerful build, it all works. Is he as powerful-looking as Heisei Goji? Not really. Is he as imposing as Monsterverse Goji? No. But something about this design strikes a near-perfect balance for me. Not only that, but Godzilla's personality in this film is great. Godzilla feels like a battle-hardened rōnin warrior with a chip on his shoulder. And now that I think about it, this Goji might be the most powerful. He goes through the whole movie beating the other kaiju left and right without even breaking a sweat. He's unstoppable. If they made a whole film series with Final Goji and all the other monsters in Final Wars, I would absolutely LOVE it. So yeah, after a lot of thinking, Final Wars Godzilla is my favorite Godzilla.
BUT WHAT ABOUT Y'ALL?!

When was the first time you communicated with him?
That was something. How did he not notice this before?
guess el was right, he was slacking off on this and it’s only been… actually how long has it been?
he doesn’t know. He thinks for a moment at the question that was asked, when he first communicated with him?
how should he even answered that? He thinks to himself, his purple eyes glinting slightly
before he shrugs “it’s been so long ago… I’d almost forgotten… but I still remember it.” He starts out, thinking on what exactly to say.
“i guess it all started on 1979? I don’t know but it was obviously before I was… well. Taken into the upside down. I was bored. I was riding on back home with my bike, when I had noticed that out of nowhere. The way I usually go was.. blocked persay by trees”
He hums, thinking back. Back when everything was more simple, more easy…. He sighs, before continuing on “I had to an shortcut through the woods, it was rough. Rocky. Bumpy. You name it. Eventually what felt like hours I just stopped at somewhere. And I saw something”
he would never forget it, humming slightly as the boy continues “and of course, I was curious so. I came up to what I thought was simply an odd shape in the lake, only though, when I had touched it… something just… sparked in me or…”
he genuinely didn’t know how to phrase it, huffing a bit as he sighs “I felt something… like my mind was… invaded but at the same time… it wasn’t? Like it was being strengthened… and I began hearing this voice…. This old but scared voice… and I heard something else, an message. It was to simply keep him from turning out like the previous king.”
He looks out the window, humming a bit before glancing back “and he rose up. We were officially connected afterwards… that was our first communication… and I’ll be honest I was scared out of my mind… though I did eventually draw something out of it….”
he was pretty much done now with the question since he had answered enough finally, but he still rambled on a bit “I think I still have it… ah. Here it is… that’s pretty much it… it’s not that special in my opinion. Basically it’s like a… one in a million but… eh take with it what you will I guess.”
There was a simply title in the old drawing, simply labeled as “FIRST CONTACT.”

Kinda disappointed with the official Shin Ghidorah, which is just regular Ghidorah but with a 'creepier' face like Shin Goji's. Because I always saw the design philosophy behind Shin Godzilla, and by extension any hypothetical Shin counterparts for other Kaiju, to be going back to the basics; Taking the original core idea behind a monster, and amplifying it.
Godzilla is an allegory for nuclear destruction and in some stories was created by radiation, so naturally Shin Godzilla is an irradiated mutant in constant agony over its transformation, whose final form resembles a black mushroom cloud.
So Shin Ghidorah for me should be more along the lines of... A radiant, cosmic alien god. Something so bright and overwhelming in its light that it's like facing the sun itself. A creature from the cosmos, representing one of the most powerful aspects of it. I hate to admit it, but something like the anime trilogy Ghidorah is more in lines with what I'm thinking of.
Shin Mothra would lean into the motherly guardian of nature vibes, while also embracing the fact that she's a magical girl kaiju. She's a beautiful goddess, her presence is comforting, may as well make her extra fluffy. She's easily the most conventionally good of all the monsters.
Some Shin counterparts could be more along what we got with Shin Godzilla; Shin Hedorah seems very straightforward. I also like to think of Shin Gigan, who is this reanimated, cyborg frankenstein's monster that constantly gets torn apart, only to come back each time, even more cybernetic. A creature taken apart and put back together, several times over, constantly losing itself as it gradually becomes more mechanical, a Theseus' ship. A creature that simply isn't allowed to die, its corpse pumped full of adrenaline, its heart and brain jump started, until it comes back wrong. So like Shin Godzilla, a suffering creature tormented by human technology. Gigan’s agony ramps up until it suddenly goes silent, indicating that last problematic bit of its soul has been replaced.
I wonder if a Shin Destoroyah might be reimagined as a plant monster, or some other type of organism that doesn't require oxygen to survive; Given it's to the Oxygen Destroyer what Godzilla is to the nuke, Shin Destoroyah should constantly be, well, destroying oxygen. Every living thing dependent on that is automatically suffocating just being in its presence.
Shin Jet Jaguar? A colorful tokusatsu superhero, Gurren Lagann mecha, and Pacific Rim jaeger rolled into one. Just lean into the corny cheesiness, that goofy and charismatic grin. Shin King Caesar is an ancient stone deity, a shisa statue brought to life. He’s a mythological protector who strikes fear into the hearts of evil. Gorosaurus is meant to be the biggest, baddest dinosaur ever, when a T-rex isn't enough to threaten Kong anymore. And given the dinosaurs in King Kong represent the return of the prehistoric past, Shin Gorosaurus would be like the Indominus Rex, in that it's designed to lean into all of the stereotypical cool factors of dinosaurs for kids.

Back again with what should be week 31 of the Daily Dragon Challenge!
As always you can follow me on twitter where they’re posted daily
And read more info on each of them below the cut
Daily Dragon #210 / #211 - Blue-Eyes White Dragon / Red-Eyes Black Dragon
MORE dragons I knew I wanted to do from the start. Something Yugioh related is LONG overdue but god DAMN the dragons in this series are not easy to draw!!
Certainly not perfect, but considering I'm tired and they're tricky designs I think they could've come out a lot worse! I hope you like them!
Daily Dragon #212 - Mimring
WE GOT ANY HEROSCAPE FANS IN THE HOUSE!?!? The characters from that game are so cool and have stuck in my head nonstop ever since I was a little kid. So many good memories of this figure's wings falling off.
Daily Dragon #213 - DRAGON.EXE
[ GIF / FLASHING LIGHTS WARNING ] Uh oh... Well, I'm sure that file wasn't important... Thank you all SO much for voting! That's that on July, this fella ended up being the most popular!
Here's the results :
DRAGON.EXE - 2 Votes Megalogon - 2 Votes Black Hole Dragon - 1 Vote Drake Typhoon - 1 Vote Eggodon - 1 Vote Chocodon - 1 Vote Bombodon - 1 Vote Bog Rex - 1 Vote Cleoboros - 1 Vote Vampire Wyvern - 1 Vote
This time, the tie breaker was decided by my mom :)
I won't toot my own horn, but there were a few dragons I was pretty pleased with this month. But I think my ultimate favorite may have been the Black Hole Dragon. With Exor, Vampire Wyvern, and Gila Devil being close runner ups.
Here's the 2 frames on their own. Since I always gotta go that lol I hope you enjoyed the little gif effect thing I just randomly decided it would be cute! But yeah, that's the end of July! Very exciting! My birthday isn't too far off!
Daily Dragon #214 - Bahamut (Final Fantasy 3)
First dragon on my sort of hiatus and also somehow the first true Bahamut of the challenge! I want to draw each FF Bahamut as I play the games, but I've been LONG overdue on this one. I beat 3 back in January
Daily Dragon #215 - Godzilla
This was a drawing I started for a previous day but abandoned. However, looking at it again tonight I actually REALLY liked how the lineart looked, so I finished it! The King of the Monsters is here!!
And before people say "oh this isn't a dragon" there was a palm tree included in this challenge. a palm tree. that was a dragon.
Daily Dragon #216 - Bio Dragon
A strange dragon made in a lab by people trying to play gods. They're incredibly ferocious, made with the most powerful traits of various reptiles. Such as camouflage and toxic spit.
This is a redraw of an old dragon, I don't have an exact date but I want to say its sometime pre-2017??
and yes... yeah... its another poison one

My Top 10 Favorite Godzilla Designs
I used to say that Millennium Godzilla was my favorite design for the character, but that might not be the case anymore. I still love it, but after thinking about for a good long time, I have found that there are designs that I like better. And I finally narrowed down my top 10 favorites. So here it is. My Top 10 Favorite Godzilla Designs
#10. Earth Goji
By far the most unique design on this list. With his tree-bark-like skin and leaf-like dorsal plates, I wasn't sure to add this design on my list as I felt Goji looked best when he looked reptilian. However, the more I look at it, the more this design begins to grab me. Something else that works in this Goji's favor is that he is ABSOLUTELY GIGANTIC!!! Seriously! This big guy got up to 318 meters tall! THAT'S 1043 FEET! I never got the chance to see this series, but I can at least say that its design for Godzilla is one of the best.
#9. Shin Goji
This design for Godzilla is ABSOLUTELY HIDEOUS in the BEST POSSIBLE WAY! It looks like the charred remains of a creature that got caught in an explosion that is somehow still alive. The crazy jagged teeth, the tiny, beady eyes, the purple atomic power, even the splitting jaw is great, in my opinion. The only things going against this design is tail seems a little too long sometimes and the arms are super scrawny. It's a bit distracting, I won't lie. Still, Shin Goji is TERRIFYING, and that alone got him on this list.
#8. Singular Point Goji
I didn't like this design at first. I felt it was a little too odd looking. However, I eventually saw the pictures of the S.H. Monsterarts figure of Singular Point Goji, and found that it did have a certain charm. My only real gripes are the placement of the fangs and that the way the mouth looks from certain angles seems a bit inorganic, if that makes sense. I have not heard a lot of good things about the series, but at the very least the design for Goji is solid, and definitely good looking enough for this list.
#7. MireGoji
Godzilla had a few different designs during the Millennium Era. This design is called MireGoji, and it comes from Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla vs Megaguirus (though it varied slightly in both films.) There's plenty to love about MireGoji. One is the colors. This is one of the few Godzillas that is green instead of gray. Not only that, but the pinkish purple dorsal plates are striking. It's very eye catching. Another great thing is all the jagged elements. The jagged teeth, jagged scales, and jagged plates gives this Godzilla an edgy look. The only real downside is the size. MireGoji is one the smallest Gojis on this list at only 50 meters tall. Sure, you can argue that 50 meters is the original Godzilla's authentic height, but personally, I like Godzilla in the height neighborhood of 100 to 120 meters. Still the MireGoji design has its charms, and a special place in my heart.
#6. KiryuGoji
KiryuGoji, featured in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla Tokyo SOS, is a lot like MireGoji, but with a few differences. The jagged elements are a bit more streamlined, he's back to being dark gray with silver plates, and he has a wolf-like face. In my opinion, it has pretty much everything going for it. Again, the one thing it's got going against it is the size at only 50 meters. But aside from that, KiryuGoji is fantastic.
#5. IDW Goji
The only Godzilla design on this list that isn't from a movie or show. Illustrated by the remarkably talented Matt Frank, IDW Goji has everything KiryuGoji has going for it, only this time, he's a whomping 100 meters tall. Something about this streamline design and grayish green color really works. It certainly helps that this Godzilla is one of the more powerful versions of the character. IDW Goji is like the perfect blend of the two Millennium Gojis on this list, and definitely my favorite illustrated version of the character.
#4. Monsterverse Goji
More specifically, his design in 2019 and 2021. It's big, it's menacing, and it looks like it could be an actual animal. I also love the skin and the addition of visible gills, making this Goji stand out that much more. There are only two major problems I have with this design For one thing, the head's a bit too small. I know Godzilla has never had a particularly large noggin, but it's hard not to point out. The other is that I wish he had more teeth, and that those teeth were bigger and more noticeable. Still, this design works, warts and all. Monsterverse Goji is a force to be reckoned with, and I look forward to seeing more of him in future movies.
#3. Gemstone Goji
This design is brilliant, in my opinion. It's like a perfect blend of Heisei Goji and Monsterverse Goji. Sometimes the skin looks less like scales and more like lumpy, gray warts. It's not bad, but it is hard to ignore sometimes. Most of the time, however, it's not a problem, and this Goji definitely fits with the narrative Gemstone is creating. If they make more media with this design, I'm game.
My only two drawbacks is that sometimes the shoulders are a bit too slim, and sometimes the legs seem a little too massive. It's not a deal breaker, mind you, but it can be distracting from time to time. Still, the Heisei era does have, arguably, the most consistent and recognizable design, and it's definitely makes the top 2.
#1. Final Goji
I have thought about this for a good, long time, and I think I can safely say that Godzilla's design in Godzilla: Final Wars is my personal favorite. The red eyes, the teeth, the longer ears, the slim yet powerful build, it all works. Sometimes the tail length seems a little inconsistent, no doubt due to the fact that they used three different suits for the movie, but other than that, it's perfect. And now that I think about it, this Goji might be the most powerful aside from Earth Goji.

Movie Review | Godzilla Minus One (Yamazaki, 2023)
We are so inundated with images of mass destruction tossed off so casually in our mass entertainments that it’s cathartic to see a movie give such images the physical and moral weight they deserve. This is a movie very aware that what it depicts is mass death and wants you to reckon with that. And on a pure technical level, this apparently cost a fraction of the average Hollywood blockbuster but looks substantially better than most in recent years, because it takes care to frame its effects through a clear sense of scale, and to render Godzilla’s movements so you can practically feel the ground shake. The opening attack scene, which takes cues from the T-Rex attack in Jurassic Park, is especially terrifying. This movie respects Godzilla and understands that he can be fearsome.
The conventional wisdom about these movies is that the monster scenes are the raison d’être but the human scenes are boring and must be suffered through. That’s probably true of the recent American movies (King of the Monsters has an especially wide gulf in quality between the two), but I actually like the fable-like directness of Mothra vs. Godzilla, the media satire of King Kong vs. Godzilla and the Cold War tensions of The Return of Godzilla, to name a few examples outside of the original. In any case, I think the human scenes here are a cut above in the way they parallel the hero’s story with the tensions around Japan’s postwar identity, overcoming the dehumanizing wartime experience under fascist rule to achieve something empowering and humanist. I’ve perhaps grown cynical from the last few years of humankind being totally unable to work together to solve problems that threaten us all, so I couldn’t help but be moved by this movie’s vision of ordinary, collaborative heroism. I feel no shame in saying that I found much of this movie deeply moving and shed more than a few tears during my viewing.
I’m on the record for finding Shin Godzilla a pretty wretched piece of work that fails entirely as both spectacle and social commentary, so it was nice to see a Godzilla movie do those things as well as this does. I will also say that I was pretty annoyed that during my screening I was sitting next to two dudes who spent the entire movie talking and laughing. Given that they weren’t actually that loud, I probably shouldn’t care too much, but that’s the big man up there on screen, show some goddamn respect.

Someone I follow got an ask about "how many Godzillas are there, I thought there was just one", and now I wanna lay it out.
Showa timeline: Two adults and one Minilla. The first one dies at the end of Godzilla (1954), a second one appears in Godzilla Raids Again (1955), and that second one appears in every subsequent film and later adopts Minilla.
Heisei timeline(s): Three. The 1954 film is still canon, that first Godzilla dies there. A second Godzilla appears in 1984's Return of Godzilla. Despite some time travel shenanigans in Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, these two Gojis remain canon the same way, the newer one just gets a power boost. And then Godzilla Jr is introduced in Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2, grows to full size at the end of Godzilla vs Destoroyah, and canonically goes on to be the Godzilla in the two CGI short films from the last two years, Godzilla vs Gigan Rex and the Megalon one.
Godzilla (1998) and The Series: As far as I know, two adults (the one from the movie, and its living offspring from the show) and about 200 babies that don't make it out of the film.
Godzilla 2000: Unclear. Considering the behind-the-scenes pedigree of this film, it feels implied that this is Junior from the Heisei series, but that's not explicit. All we know is that Godzilla is here and has been for a while.
Godzilla vs Megaguirus: One. The original film happened, but Godzilla survived it and continued to menace Japan for another 45 years.
GMK: One. The original film happened, but Godzilla was brought back to life by his healing factor/the souls of WWII victims in 2001.
Kiryu Duology: Two. The original film happened (along with every other solo Toho kaiju film from the 60s that didnt involve Godzilla), a second Godzilla arrived in 1999, and then they spent five years using the dead first Goji's bones to build Mechagodzilla.
Final Wars: Unclear. Like 2000, all we know is that he was a known quantity before being trapped in the ice. The film's opening credits montage ends with the final shot of adult Junior from Vs Destoroyah and then a shot of this film's Goji in the ice, which implies it's Junior, but that's not definitive. Matt Frank's Godzilla Neo project (which massages every film into one timeline) had the excellent idea to make this Goji the resurrected original one from GMK, whose still-beating heart was put on ice at the south pole but has slowly been regenerating.
Monsterverse: One. Godzilla is millions of years old, was already kaiju-sized when Castle Bravo was used on him, and just goes around beating up other monsters and feeding on radiation.
Shin: One. Goji's a mutant created by some creature feeding on radioactive waste being dumped into the ocean.
Godzilla Earth anime trilogy: One main Godzilla who starts off "normal" sized during the prologue, and is revealed to have grown to mountain-sized at the end of the first film. Has an unknown number of offspring, one of which was mistaken for the original during the events of the first film (leading to that aforementioned reveal, the best moment of that trilogy).
Singular Point: One? I think? That show was confusing.
Minus One: One, whose origin is the same as the 1954 original; a remnant amphibious dinosaur living in the waters around Odo Island, mutated to giant size and given superpowers by the Castle Bravo nuclear tests. Shown to have the same regenerative powers as 2000 and GMK, so he'll be back.

Rose from the depths, and laid waste to Tokyo over and over, fighting against another of his kind, and then fighting against an trio of giant Mutated ankylosauruses. Over the course. Tokyo was left an radiation filled barren wasteland engulfed in nuclear fire. Very few survived. Over many years. Godzilla would continue to reign as the unstoppable king of monsters. Where more rose in his wake. An female, a child. An god monster, and so much more. Some were on our side, others were not. But over the years. Dagon has grown soft… “
“that all changed when an gigantic beast known only as Yamato no Orochi arose, and Dagon was suddenly back to his old ways, only far more powerful… and on the verge of a nuclear meltdown. One of the big highlight scenes from the original King Kong was his fight with the T-rex, which was the only giant monster in the film to rival him. It’s a beat adapted many times, such as in Kong’s battle with the V-rex in Peter Jackson’s reboot. Between this and his battle with the Gorosaurus in Toho’s films, and the Skullcrawlers and Warbats in the Monsterverse, and one could say his rivalry with Godzilla is the ultimate culmination of Kong’s continuing feud with reptiles that has defined an iconic part of him since the beginning.
