Time Travel Question 30: Murder and
Disappearance Edition III
Given that Roanoke and the Dyatlov Pass Incident are credibly solved, though not 100% provable, I'm leaving them out in favor of things more mysterious. I almost left out Amelia Earhart from a previous edition, but the evidence there is sketchier.
No, I'm not doing JFK. I refuse.
Please add new suggestions below, if you have them, for future consideration.

Ludwig o Luis II de Baviera (1973) de Luchino Visconti

John Moulder Brown’s role as Prince Otto in Visconti’s Ludwig is pretty small when considering screentime, but it is one of the most compelling. His deterioration (portrayed in the film as the result of some sort of PTSD) is heartbreaking to watch and although his final scenes are about halfway through the runtime I found his character to be one of the most memorable.

On this day:
MAD KING OF BAVARIA
On June 12, 1886, "Mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria was locked up in his Schloss Berg palace, declared insane by his cabinet and Prince Luitpold, his heir. When a commission went to arrest him, they were waylaid by forty quarts of beer, ten bottles of champagne, and a seven-course feast. Later, they were waylaid by loyal local police and peasants. King Ludwig was captured the next day. Psychiatrist Bernard von Gudden justified the arrest with evidence documenting how the monarch hid behind curtains at court balls, had moonlight picnics, danced strangely, pulled his beard when excited, bowed to a holy tree, and had an insane brother.
Little interested in state affairs, Ludwig was eccentric. He idolized and heavily financed the famous composer Richard Wagner. He reversed day and night, going on midnight mountain rides in a gilded sleigh pulled by four white horses. Extravagant theater productions were staged for his eyes only. He sent out a sofa to a sentry who appeared tired. Ludwig was briefly engaged to his cousin Sophie, but escaped marriage. Castle building became his obsession. Three castles were finished, and three more, including a Chinese palace and a Byzantine palace, entered the planning stages.
The day following the arrest, Ludwig and Gudden took two strolls around a lake. Two orderlies accompanied them on the first walk, but not the second. When they failed to return by dinnertime, an alarm was sent out, and castle staff, armed with torches, searched the grounds. Two umbrellas and a hat rested by a bench, and the king's jacket and overcoat were floating in the water. The bodies of King Ludwig II and Gudden were found, drowned, thirty yards offshore. The king's watch had stopped at 6:54 p.m. Speculation of what occurred includes government-sanctioned murder, suicide, and accident.

"mad" as in he was a gay man with mental problems and a disinterest for current politics, unwillingly on the throne, choosing instead to commission pretty castles (and thereby draining the country's financial resources).
Of course he also believed in the divine right of kings and had little regard for the common people's problems, but that was not the reason his advisors eventually conspired to paint him as "insane" and eventually lead to his mysterious death in the Starnberg lake, effectively ending the monarchy in Bavaria.
Also he used to write passionate love letters to the composer Richard Wagner.
