Had an argument with someone on a Facebook group about whether Kong counts as a kaiju or deserves honor in tokusatsu, either.

The guy insisted Kong does not count because he is a "kaijin," which is apparently a category for humanoids like Ultraman, and also because he was originally stop-motion he does not count as tokusatsu.

Well, nuts to that.

Kong has appeared in 8 live-action films. In 4 of those films he was portrayed by a guy in a suit. So a good 50% of his film appearances, then, are basically tokusatsu.

Especially since 2 of those 4 appearances had him brought to life by Eiji Tsubaraya himself!

Plus, let's not forget that the successful re-release of the 1933 King Kong was one of the inspirations behind Godzilla's creation in the first place!

I get that some fans have an irrational hatred for Kong, because I have had that mindset, too. However, I grew out of it and the rest of them need to, too.

The female ape is known for being the mate of Kong as it turns out that her ancestors have been taking refuge in one of the places of the Skull Island to escape the ancient Hollow Earth War.

Lady Kong is the wife of the notorious King Kong of our current times, she resided secretly within the Hollow Earth; until King Kong traveled to the Hollow Earth and made an alpha call, drawing Lady Kong's attention, she responded and both apes became attracted to each other. After meeting each other, they developed a close relationship and now rule the Hollow Earth as king and queen.

Watchlist 2025: King Kong Lives

Short Summary: An American film made in 1986 and a sequel to the 1976 King Kong film, and also noted as being the final Kong film in which the title character was portrayed using suits and practical effects, going full CGI afterwards. In this film Kong survives his "death" in the 1976 film and is brought back to life with an artificial heart. A female Kong is discovered, captured and brought to the US, where the two escape captivity and form a romance, as do the human characters in this film.

My Review: 3.5 out of 5

I'm not an overly huge fan of King Kong, especially in the Monsterverse because too much time is focused on giant monkey and not giant radioactive lizard. But this movie was just a decent OK film. The suits of Kong and Lady Kong were good, though both the look and size of the "Newborn" Kong was completely laughable. The practical effects were also very good. The human actors were okay, but they had a romantic scene in the film that I just thought was unnecessary. But overall, a decent but not overly memerable Kong film.
