What Goes Around | Chapter 5 Start [1/2]
It’s not even two hours later that you hear that horrible sound. For the manor, it’s the sound of the alarm. For those in the tree, it’s Amber’s insistence that a body has been found. Already? How could this happen? There wasn’t even a motive in place at the moment.
Whether or not you choose to speculate on who the body could be, you find yourself rushed back to the manor. The manor again… This place is getting pretty tiring. But it’s not the gates you’re sent toward this time, still a little off from the explosion, but to the ballroom. The ballroom seems a terrible place for a murder. But then again, as does every other place. There’s no such thing as a good murder.

King Calum is splayed on the floor, one leg propped up by a chair. He looks like he was attacked rather viciously, due to the numerous claw marks across his body. Almost as if he was mauled by a large animal. His chest, however, is where the worst of the damage was done. His chest has been carved open and his heart has been removed. Notably, so has his cape, but that’s not really important right now. …You don’t see the heart anywhere? Perhaps someone threw it away or destroyed it? Without the heart, one can not be revived with resurrection magic.

As you’re still getting used to the idea that someone actually managed to kill King Calum, the ballroom doors slam open, and Cap stalks in on her feline steed. She only spares the lot of you a brief glance as she motions you to part ranks, to allow her access to the body. Argante kneels so she can take a close look at the King’s corpse. Her grave expression hardly wavers.
Kali, meanwhile, is poorly disguising a smirk. “Alright, everyone, let’s get out of their way. Wouldn’t want to obstruct the investigation of the most important murder of our time!” She tilts her head. “It’s not like this was a ritual sacrifice. We’ve got no obligation to do anything here.” With expansive hand movements, she shoos the lot of you back out of the ballroom and down the path through the dark thicket.
As you round the corner, you glimpse more figures hurrying in through the suddenly-open gates. “Pick up the pace, you lot!” Kali barks, an almost desperate urgency creeping into her voice. “Back to the tree! Chop chop! No time to waste!”
“What the fuck?” You hear a shout from the trees before Alvarie emerges, in the partial beast form she had used in her fight versus Kali. And she immediately sees Kali leading everyone out suspiciously while guards come on her heels. “Damn it, everyone in the portal or we are leaving you behind!” She goes back around the corner, followed by the sound of crashing metal, and then pops back out again to follow you all. “In in in in in!”
Heeding Kali and Alvarie’s urgency, you don’t waste time making tracks for the basement summoning circle’s portal. You pile through as Alvarie frantically gestures and Kali counts heads. Once the pixie’s sure everyone else is through, she follows. “Close the portal, Amber!” she exclaims.
“On it!” Amber’s voice reverberates off the walls.
The tear in space ripples and smears, its edges destabilizing. Then, it suddenly slams shut, with a bassy thump and a pressure wave that ruffles the hair of everyone still catching their breath in the antechamber.
…That felt decidedly like an escape.

5sos5 really shows their growth as people and as a band - the album not only marks their most beautiful lyrical creativity and style of music but also is a proof of how good they're with their vocals as well as the instruments individually and as a band, and Michael really nailed it as the producer. 5sos5 is really the epic evidence of how four lads from Australia can create magic when they come together as one. Sunny!!!! Ive been HOOKED to the Where The Roses Bloom and Where The Storm Gather series, I started yesterday and I couldn't stop reading, I truly love yn's relationships with everyone and youre such an amazing writer I just cant help but to fall in love with them even more 😍🥺
I do have a question, though. It says in the second book that Calum shaved his head, but I always imagines him with shaved head in the first book, are there any specific looks for the boys? Just so I can imagine them better in my head 🥺

And to answer your question: Yes, in my head each boy has a different look for each book, but then again that’s just my interpretation and the reader can view them as they want as well. But as the writer, each look has a meaning and let me explain why (and just imagine them in period clothing, I do not go as far with my editing skills.
Calum: We start book one with the famous curly hair/prince era and I always imagined him like that. Yet once they had to flee they needed to change so they don’t get recognized easily, hence the start of buzz cut stable lad calum. When it comes to his body, he was always buff but now with the training it’s more obvious.
Ashton: Ashton has the classic prince look in book one, always secure of himself and a bit messy as well with the curls. In book two, however, his looks change dramatically since he’s been locked up: his hair is up to his shoulders and he has a beard. Not to mention he lost weight and it’s very weak. And since there’s no pictures of Ashton looking like that, you’ll just have to use your imagination
Michael: He’s the one that’s been through the least changes when it comes to appearances. He’s obviously matured from book one to the second one, but nothing too major other than the length of his hair. I always imagined Michael with Mr. Whickman’s hair from P&P, long and well kept in a low ponytail and also in his natural color
Luke: this one’s my favorite 🥺 You see, Luke is always described with an “angel look” to him, which is pretty accurate. On book one he’s described with long, curly hair and broad shoulders and a baby face. In book two we can see him mature into his looks with shorter hair, a sharper face, a beard and an overall King-like image. After his last encounter with King Richard, he thought it was time that people stop seeing him as a kid and more like their King
And that’s pretty much it 🥺💕 I do have different aesthetics for each character as well (including y/n and Richard and Jack) but I can only post so much without this site banning me for no reason 😅

Luke, Calum decides, is a good person to fancy.
The decision comes together slowly, not all at once; more like a corroboration of a lot of different observations than just one thing. For starters — and this one’s the obvious — Luke’s just pretty. Objectively, anyone would be hard-pressed to disagree. His eyes are so blue it feels like drowning just looking into them, and his shy smile is so infectious, and he has these long fingers, perfect for playing guitar (and possibly holding hands), and now that he’s starting to push his hair up into a quiff Calum has to face the facts: Luke is cute. He’s just cute.
(That’s why Michael is jealous, at first, Calum is pretty sure. Michael is more than just cute, and anyway they’re completely different people, but that’s a whole different conversation.)
Also, Luke’s just really nice. Once he gets over the initial shyness — and once Michael stops glaring daggers at him — he’s actually a really friendly guy. Plus he’s funny, and his laugh is as captivating as his smile, and altogether Calum is convinced Luke is just some kind of simulation designed to test him.
It’s working. Calum feels officially tested.
They started out working on homework, but then Michael had to go home and help his mum with dinner, and things fell apart soon after that. Now they’re lounging on Calum’s bed, Calum against the headboard and Luke at the foot, both on their phones. Alone together. Calum sometimes likes being alone together, but it’s really more of a Michael thing; he wants to talk to Luke, wants to hang out and socialize and chat and stuff. Luke’s good for that kind of thing, especially because he’s kind of a pushover. It’s not enough to make him do anything he’s severely uncomfortable with, but he’s usually happy to go along with whatever Calum and Michael are doing. Calum wonders if that’s residual from when he’d had unsteady footing in the friendship — and the band — or if Luke is just genuinely an easygoing guy.
“Hey,” Calum says abruptly, cutting through the silence which had been going on ten minutes. “You don’t think Mikey and I are going to drop you, do you?”
Luke, laying on his back across the end of the bed, turns his head to look at Calum. “What?”
“Our friendship, I mean,” Calum says. He pushes himself off the pillows and bounces onto his stomach so his face is closer to Luke’s; Luke turns onto his side. “Are you worried we’re going to suddenly decide we don’t like you?” “I am now,” Luke says.
Calum shoves his shoulder while Luke giggles. “I’m serious, Luke. I just want to be sure that you don’t follow along with whatever we say because you think we’ll hate you if you don’t.”
Luke shrugs. “I don’t know, Cal. I kind of did at the beginning. Not anymore, though. You love me too much to leave me,” he teases, poking at Calum’s calf.
“I do love you a lot,” Calum agrees, and Luke blushes pink.
“Plus, I don’t know, I feel like we’ve got a team kind of thing,” Luke adds. “Me and Michael, and me and you. Is that presumptuous? Did I use presumptuous correctly?”
“Beats me,” Calum says. “But it’s probably not presumptuous, and I agree.” He pauses, and there’s a short silence. Calum can’t decide if it’s tense or not, but if it is he’d like to break it. “Don’t tell Michael I said this, okay,” he says quietly, “but I don’t think he’s used to, um, having more than one friend.”
Luke nods. “To be fair,” he says, “neither am I.”
Calum had kind of known that, that Luke had been alone and lonely for many years, but it’s like a punch to the face to hear him so matter-of-fact about it.
“That sucks,” he says, because it does. “I can’t believe — I mean, sorry, but I just don’t believe nobody wanted to be friends with you. I don’t believe that. You’re you.”
“Exactly.”
“Yeah, but you’re so nice and funny and cute and charming,” Calum says frustratedly. “Why wouldn’t anyone want to be your friend? It just, it doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t.” Luke blinks slowly at him. “What?”
“You think I’m nice and funny and cute and charming.”
“Well. Yeah. Obviously.”
“You think I’m cute?”
Calum sighs. “Of course I think you’re cute, Luke. Have you ever looked in a mirror in your life.”
“Yeah, so that’s why I’m confused,” Luke says, and Calum sees his ears turning red. “Especially compared to you.”
“Hey, shut up,” Calum says, pushing again at Luke’s shoulder. “We’re complimenting you right now. Wait your turn.” Luke smiles a bit at that. He doesn’t do that shy smile too often anymore, much less inhibited these days than when he’d just become friends with them, but it’s back now, timid and uncertain.
“I think you’re cute,” Luke says. Calum doesn’t think it’s possible for the crimson in Luke’s cheeks to get any brighter, but now he can feel the blood rushing to his own, too. “Really.”
“Well, you can’t,” Calum says. “We can’t both find each other cute.”
“Yes we can,” Luke says. “People do it all the time.”
“Not, like,” Calum gestures ambiguously. “Friends.”
Luke frowns. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You don’t find your friends cute. That’s just a word for, like, crushes and stuff.”
Luke gapes, and Calum realizes he’s just exposed himself for crushing on Luke. He’s set to defend himself, possibly talk himself into a corner, when Luke says, “Well. I stand by what I said.”
This time it’s Calum’s turn to stare. “Even though you can only find crushes cute?”
“Even still,” Luke says firmly, averting his eyes away from Calum’s and playing with a loose thread on the duvet.
Calum takes a second to turn over this new information. Luke’s not exactly the king of subtlety, so if he fancies Calum shouldn’t Calum have noticed? But maybe the things Calum had taken for a general shyness had been disguising crush behavior. Blushing when Calum had first spoken to him; following him around like a lost puppy, ready to bend to Calum’s will; losing to Calum at Fifa but never seeming particularly disappointed by it.
“You fancy me,” Calum says, just to be sure.
Luke looks like he wants the bed to swallow him whole. “Maybe. Only if you do. You said —”
“I fancy you,” Calum reassures him quickly, “I’m just — I just don’t really believe you.”
Luke shakes his head. “I don’t believe you.”
“Well then this isn’t really going to go anywhere, is it?” Calum says dryly. Luke laughs nervously. “Okay. How about we both agree to believe each other?”
“And then what?”
Calum hums thoughtfully. “And then we play a prank on Michael about it?”
Luke grins, shyness gone once again. Eyes glittering, he says, “Amazing. I’m in. Can we stage a confession? Really dramatic?”
“We could have a fight!” Calum says enthusiastically. “And then you can yell, like, because I fancy you! and then I go you fancy me? I fancy you!”
Luke is giggling, and it makes Calum want to continue just to keep hearing Luke laugh. “Perfect. That’s perfect. And then we both storm from the room.”
“I think we should have like, a dramatic kiss,” Calum says. “And then storm from the room. They do that in movies, I’m pretty sure.” He can’t think of which ones at the moment, but he’s definitely seen it.
Luke’s laughter slowly fades. “You want to kiss for the first time in front of Michael?”
Fair point. “Okay, not for the first time, no,” Calum concedes. He looks at Luke and Luke looks back, the picture of innocence. “Should we kiss now?”
“Not if it’s going to be a chore,” Luke says, rolling his eyes.
“Shut up. You know what I mean. Can we kiss now?”
Luke pushes himself into a sitting position. “Okay,” he says, and then leans in to kiss Calum.
Calum’s not kissed that many people, but Luke quickly tops them all, not that it’s a particularly overwhelming kiss or anything. It’s just that it’s Luke, sweet and gentle, chaste, warm lips on Calum’s, so very much Luke and nobody else, and Calum smiles as they break.
“That was nice,” he says, and Luke ducks his head, which means he agrees, probably. “Excited to do it in front of Mikey.”
Luke laughs, bright and with abandon, and Calum looks forward to hearing him laugh like that, again and again, and hopefully paired with that post-first-kiss blush. Luke’s just pretty, but that’s not even the best thing about him. Not anywhere close.

hi friend. yeah, you. its okay to have a bad day. here are some tips to get through rough hours
hey so i'm having a really bad night and i dont want anyone to feel the way i'm feeling so i thought id do this. its inspired by a post i cant find (if i do i will try to remeber to link it) and it has a few tips that work with me/ive heard worked with other people.
first of all here are some cute hedgehogs bc they always make me smile a bit

now, on to a mug cookie recipe i saved. its not mine again, but its good
alright, now that you have seen cute animals and got yourself a nice snack, why dont you lay down in bed/on the sofa? make a blanket fort, a blanket nest, just anything that you'd like. if you have pets and they like affection, cuddling them might be a good comfort! its okay to stop making that report, watching that class, writing that essay or doing that chore. those things will be there in a couple hours. just focus on your mental health right now
you're okay. you see that blanket your under? its not going to let anything hurt you, you're safe with it. and your pet? it will protect you if it has to

american footballはきっとこうなることを運命付けられていたんだろう。──彼らが休止して、10年以上もの時間を経た頃にソレは来た。american football、Braid、the Promis Ring──熱意と情熱と(しばしば、あからさまの無視)を批評家から受けていたlate-'90s、Midwestern EMOは2010年あたりを境に、ようやく収穫の時を迎えた。そしてそれはアヴァンR&Bとかクールさとか、大学の中庭で景色を眺めながら涼むみたいなことにはどうにも馴染めないインディ・ロック・ファンにも好都合だった。新たな、育ちつつあったシーンとは無関係なとこから、彼らは還ってきた。数多のホープたちが自らの最高傑作をリリースする横で、2010年代にはフリークフォークもダンス・パンクも、もちろんEMOも現在のインディ・シーンの中で反響を起こすようなモノではなかったとしても。ただ、唯一にして、絶対の影響力を持つアルバムが彼らのディスコグラフィーにある。ジャズとポストロックを飲み込んで、削ぎ落とされたEMO。結成と解散を頻繁に繰り返し��Capp'n Jazzのメンバーを中心としたバンドのファミリーツリー(訳注1)(Friend/Enemyとか、Owlsとか、Make Believeなんかだ)の1バンドだった彼らは、あのアルバムのみで自らを信じられないような高みへ──Hot Topicや、Warped tour(訳注2)なんかじゃない──導いてしまう正典となった。2016年の頭の頃にMike Kinsellaはamerican footballは「有名になる気も、それどころかバンドであることも」求めていなかったと言った。いま、そうじゃないと言っても首を縦に降るリスナーはいないだろう。なにより、きっと二枚目の『american football』以上に、僕らが待ち望んでいたEMOのアルバムはなかった。
Kinsellaの自身への評価のハードルは低すぎて、『american football(1st)』が生み出してきた神話をほとんど削り取ってしまう。二枚目のアルバムがリリースされたのは彼らがツアーを巡るのを楽しんで、同時に同じ曲ばかりを演奏するのに飽きたからだ。また彼はバンドの二枚目のアルバムがどれだけ望まれてきたのかも自覚している。「僕らはどこにいる?(原文 Where are we now?)」。21世紀になって初めてリリースされたamerican footballの曲で彼は問いかける。「ひとつ屋根の下で、僕らはひとりぼっち」──あぁ、そうだ、まるで二枚のアルバムカバーのようだ。今回、一つひとつのタイトルは歌詞の最初の一行からとられている。『american football(1st)』でソレは最後の一行だった。これは彼らについて話すなら大事なピースだ。
だけど、こんなどうしようもなく諦めの悪いファンがおもわずニヤついてしまうようなコミュニケーションは、一方で同じくらいのやきもきをずっと抱え続けることになる。m b v や、Wildflowerとか、Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...Pt.2(訳注3)とか、ね? 分かるだろう? 「Where Are We Now?」という一言は、フェスティバルの大観衆や数千人規模の会場に集ったファンのど真ん中へと投げ込まれた。一つの事実として、この曲のコーラスの存在がある──1stでは欠片もなかった要素だ、それはスポットライトを浴びながら、さざめくようなリードギターを相手にワルツを踊る。一言でまとめれば、後期のSunny Day Real Estateみたいなプログレッシブさだ。リード・シングルの「I've Been So Lost For So Long」にも最初のヴァースで鳴らされる4/4のドラム・キックがある。今では"the hit"と呼ばれ、ファンがキックに合わせて手拍子を入れるのがお約束になっている。Jimmy Eat Worldがかつて辿ったようなクロスオーバーの道をなぞるEMOの新星がいない中、この曲たちは問う。なぜ、僕らが僕ら(american football)のままであったらいけないんだ?
2年目を超えたリユニオン・ツアー以後のスケジュールや、ファイル共有アプリ上でのやり取りというセッションによって芽を出した彼らの2ndフルは、タイトな日程のレコーディングではあったものの、その熟練さと連続性を強く意識させる。彼らの二枚は並べてみると共に印象的だ。将来のぼんやりした不安に襲われて週末をダメにしたことだったり、Kinsellaが'16年頃からのバンドの変化は決して過去をないがしろにするようなものじゃないと明言したことを思えば、カラッと晴れ上がったようなプロダクションが『american football(1st)』の重くふさぎ込んだようなソレとの明確なコントラストを見せるのも、ジメジメとした晩夏の湿気を吹き飛ばす、秋晴れの空をわたる風のイメージに重なる。イリノイ大学の学院生だった頃よりは鋭さを増したソングライティングもその一因で、2つのギターが輪郭をなくしていくような摩擦はなくなり、「My Instincts Are the Enemy」で満員電車に押し込まれたPinback(訳注4)のように刻まれたり、どうにも薄暗いBサイドを「Disire Gets in the Way」でブン殴ったりする。つまりはそういう事だ、Kinsellaファミリーツリーの秘蔵っ子 Into It. Over It. がやらかしていることと同じ。
そして、数千人規模に膨れ上がった観客を前に用意されたものがある。力強さを増した構成、外さないサビ(Hook)、フルタイムのベーシストとして参加している(Mike Kinsellaのいとこ)Nate Kinsellaの存在。その一方で、ここに来てamerican footballは「= Mike Kinsella」としてメディアでは扱われている。バンドのアンサンブルによって語ってみせること、もしくは「Honestry?」「Stay Home」のその先でThe World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to DieやFoxingの鳴らしたpost-emoを吹き飛ばしてしまうようなサウンドは聞こえてこない。ポップスターのようなミックスが施されたヴォーカルもあって、Kinsellaの存在感は圧倒的で、アルバムはウソみたいにキャッチーだ。かつての線の細いギターワークとひ弱なヴォーカルの代わりにMike Kinsellaの積み重ねてきたモノが��まった、もう分かってると思うけど彼の最も長命なプロジェクト、Owenのことだ。
これは当然で、別に間違っていない。Owenのコンスタントにリリースされたアルバムはどれも良い。僕が話したいのはディスコグラフィー中9枚のアルバムに、ほんの3ヶ月前(注 2016/6/27リリース。本作は2016/10/21リリース)、american football再結成後はじめてのOwenのアルバム『The Kings of Why』があるってこと。再結成というイベントがどこまで期待を煽ったかはハッキリしないけど、フルバンドによるアレンジ、ベル、笛、トランペットを同じように演奏できるプロデューサー S.Carey(訳注5)の起用──つまりもっともamerican footballっぽいOwenのアルバム。
ずっと首を長くして『american football(1st)』と肩を並べるようなアルバムを待ってるファンには悪いが今回もそう証明するものは見当たらない。僕もOwenのアルバムの「Empty Bottle」やVolcano Choir(訳注6)っぽい「Setteled Down」が、「I Need a Drink (Or Two, or Three)」とか「Holocene」みたいな「Home Is Where the Haunt Is」とかと根っこは同じものから生まれているんじゃないかって思うのはわかる。ハッキリさせたいのは、american footballの再結成/ツアーという流れは、真っ直ぐな曲構成のアルバムとなって、彼らの独創的なミュージシャンとしての立場を脇に押しやって進んでいる。そうして限られたスペースだとしても「Give Me the Gun」ではTortoiseの盟友、ご近所さん、はたまたSteve RichtやThe Blue Nile(訳注7)の門下生としてamerican footballは帰ってきたし、「Born to Lose」や「I Need a Drink (Or Two or Three)」のフェードアウトしていく終結部はヴェールの向こう側へ引っ込んでいく感情の陰影を淡いタッチで描きながら(「胡乱な目、なんて低俗なんだろう?」「乱痴気騒ぎから逃げられねぇ、僕は突っ伏すだけ」(訳注8) )、このレコードで最も下らない歌詞とハッキリとしたコントラストを生んでいる。
Owenでの彼がそうであるように、『american football』におけるMike Kinsellaは矛盾とすれ違いを抱え込んだ詩人だ。本人が認めるようにアルバムのマスタリング寸前まで彼は歌詞を書き直しながらレコーディングを続けた、 それが果たして良かったのか、確かめることはできない。そうして残ったフレーズは彼ららしい密やかさでマントラのように響くが(「Home Is Where the Haunt Is」)、一方で40にもなろう男がこんな歌詞を書いちゃうのかとこっちが恥ずかしくなるパートもある。つまりはBeach-Slang(訳注9)的な話なんだけど、James Alexのソロ・プロジェクトは彼の20代の思い出を今に伝えるのが目的で、じゃあKinsellaが哀しげに「ドクター、ここにいるのが痛くてたまらないんだ」とか、「淀んだ空のようにブルーな僕だ / 僕はこうやって死ぬんだ」と歌うのを僕らはまっすぐ受け取ればいいのか? それともEMOシーンの長老みたいな男、一流のジョークと笑えばいい?
こんな問いがバンドに与えるものなんて些細なことだ。『american football』はまだKinsellaが元Cap'n Jazzメンバーとしてしか知られていなかった1999年の話じゃない。彼にとって、「I’ll See You When We’re Both Not So Emotional」で語ったように、自分と自分のことばは相反するものじゃない。american footballというバンドは、その影響力と変わらずに秘められたセンチメンタルがあるにしても、サウンド面でもEMOとしても10代の終わりの頃の話じゃなくなった。『american football』の根っこに、いま大学の寮でヘッドフォンの間で耳を傾けている君に、「The One With the Wurlitzer」がフェードアウトしていく中でどれだけの季節が流れ、いくつの恋が散ったのかを写している。2016年現在、american footballのメンバーにはパートナーがいて、子供がいて、それなりにキャリアがあって、フルタイムの仕事がある。つまりは、不変だと思ってた目に映るセカイやモラトリアムの空想は思い出になるべきなんだ──Homer Simpson風に言うなら、このアルバムはラッキーにも日々の暮らしの中に30分ほど人生を振り返るチャンスをくれる訳だ。
訳注1 EMOの代表的バンド Cap'n Jazzのメンバーは以後もシーンを代表するバンドを結成、解散を繰り返していく。本文中で言及されているのはKisella兄弟を中心としたバンド達で、初期Cap'n Jazz期にサイドプロジェクトしてBraid、Gaugeメンバーと掛け持ちしていたThe Sky Corvairや、2001年にCap'n Jazzのオリジナルメンバーが再結成したOwls(その後Mikeの脱退によるメンバーチェンジがあったが、2013年の活動再開時にまたオリジナルメンバーに戻っている)、シカゴ周辺のアーティストが多数参加するFriend / Enemy(中心人物はTim、Mikeの兄弟とCalifoneのJim Becker、Joan of Arcにも参加しているTodd Mattei)、本文にも登場するいとこのNate KinsellaがJoan of Arcに在籍していた頃の別働隊として始まったMake Believeはこの中では長命のプロジェクトだったが2008年の3rd『Going To The Bone Church』とそれに伴うツアーをもって解散している。レビューでは触れられていないが、Cap'n JazzのVictor Villarreal(ギター)とSam Zurick(ベース)はインスト・バンド Ghost and Vodkaを、Davey von Bohlen(ギター)がthe Promise Ringをバンド解散後に結成する。
訳注2 HOT TOPICは北米を中心に展開するロック、ポップ・カルチャーをベースにした衣服、アクセサリー小売店チェーン。ライセン���によるバンドTシャツ、グッズを販売しながら、パッケージツアーのサポートも行なっている。Warped TourはVansが主催する大規模サーキットツアーで音楽、Xスポーツ、アトラクションが敷地内で同時進行で行われる。アメリカをはじめ、イギリス、南米でも国内を巡る形で開催されている。どちらもパンク、メタル、オルタナティブ・ロックのバンド/アーティストを中心としたラインナップだが、参加を断ったTouche Amoreを含めて、EMOシーンのバンドが参加することは稀である。

訳注7 The Blue Nileは��コットランド、グラスゴーで1981年にPaul BuchananとRobert Bellを中心に結成されたロック・バンド。同じくグラスゴーを拠点とするハイファイオーディオ・メーカー Linnと関係のあったプロデューサー Calum MalcolmがLinnのスタッフに彼らのデモをスピーカー・テストの一環で聴かせたところLinnが設立しようとしているレーベルのアーティストにならないかと誘いを受け、1984年にレーベルの最初のリリースとして「A Walk Across the Rooftops」を発表することになる。続いて5年後にリリースした2nd「Hats」では高い音楽的評価とUKチャートで最高12位を記録する出世作となる。しかし。30年近いキャリアがあるものの非常に寡作で知られており(4枚のアルバムと関連したシングルが9枚)、2012年にPaul Buchananはソロ・アルバムをリリースしたが、2004年の『High』以降のバンドの動向は非常に不透明であり未発表のレコーディングを含め新しいリリースはない。
訳注8 筆者個人的な理解になるがamerican footballのアルバム、LP1とLP2はどちらも「出会いと別れ」が歌詞のテーマにあり、そのメインとなるフレーズは「すれ違い」だが、1stで大学生までの苦い記憶とそれぞれが未来へ進むための別れを選んでいたのに対して今作ではこの20年の間に置いてきてしまった人々の姿を描いている。これはリベラル的な自己責任論だがドラッグ、アルコール、仕事/友人の選択のいずれにおいても他人の選択に干渉することは他人の自己決定の能力を否定しているため、避けられる傾向にある。そうした境遇の改善のために福祉や厚生施設は用意されているがそちらを選ぶのもまた個人の自己決定の責任に応じる。つまり、この歌詞にあるように現状について不満を持ちながらも何もせず更に状況を深刻にする人々は放置されることとなる。そこをMike Kinsellaはこのアルバムにそうした状況をリユニオンとかけて持ち込んでいる。

Calum knew that he was dead.
But he wasn’t too sure if this was purgatory or some kind of heaven.
It was vast fields of colour, the different flowers dancing to their own song. But as he walked, beyond the ridge of a field that was coated in gold, a small cottage came into his view.
Curiosity was something that Calum had learned to control from day one after Lucifer took him. It was control that he’d perfected.
But in this vast land that held nothing else to keep his attention, he allowed his curiosity to rise. And so he made his way over.
At the door, he hesitated to knock, his hand hovering above the door. But before he could strike the wood, it flung open and there were arms wrapped around him, the force of the hug making him stumble.
Tilting his head down, he realised his soul was singing at her touch and the vibrant red curls finally clicked in his mind.
“Lyra?” Her face pulled back, tanned skin peppered with freckles as she beamed at him.
“You made me wait, Cal.” Guilt filled his gut at her statement, his fingers brushing her curls away from her face before his fingers traced her jaw, curving under her chin.
Lyra’s face tilted into his touch, a soft smile on her lips.
“I’m sorry for making you wait, sweetheart.” The endearment rolled off his tongue, and he watched as two pink spots appeared on her cheeks.
His head was overwhelmed with emotion, emotion that he’d only ever dared to dream about when he was away from the depths of hell, away from his watchers.
“C’mon, there’s some people already here for us.” The pinks spots had not faded from her cheeks, and he smiled as her hand slipped into his, pulling him into the cottage.
He recognised Hecate almost instinctively, his magic almost singing as she smiled and stood from her spot.
Lyra stood to his side as he reached her and his eyes fell shut as her hands rested on either side of his face, the soothing magic that covered her skin relaxing his body.
“You have suffered for many years, my child. And it was never fair to you.” She murmured, her thumbs brushing his cheeks.
His fingers squeezed Lyra’s gently.
“I was given her. It is worth everything I had to suffer, even if we only got a few precious moments.” He whispered before opening his eyes. He was met with the sight of Hecate beaming at him.
“Even after everything, your heart is still pure.” She pulled away and stepped aside and Calum immediately bowed to his old Tohunga.
“Rise tamaiti. You are no longer under my instruction.” Calum did so, his magic feeling more at peace than he’d ever felt.
“Sit, both of you. We have much to discuss.”
Calum helped Lyra to sit first, taking the spot next to her. His hand never left hers and Hecate could only smile in response.
“We have a conundrum you see. Leta informed me of what was to happen. Of what the fates had told her was destined.”
“Michael’s Goddess?” Calum queried and his Tohunga nodded.
“When the siren magic breaks, her bond will pull her back from death. Because your magic protected her.”
“When the siren magic breaks?” Her voice was small, quiet. His thumb rubbed soothing circles on the back of her hand.
“They will burn the bodies before nightfall. Your two sisters are the only survivors. Your bond to them both was protected by Calum’s magic. When the sisterhood bond dies, their bond will pull you back.”
Lyra could feel the dull ache in her chest begin to form as she registered the words. Although she struggled with her sisters, what they tried to do, they’d sheltered and cared for her. Her eyes flickered to the demon sat next to her.
“But Calum will not return with me?” The Tohunga smiled kindly at her, the old face feeling comforting, familiar.
“No. But there is a tribal call for loved ones. There is enough magic to bring him back.”
Calum glanced at him in shock.
“I will return with her?” Hecate smiled kindly.
“Your magic protected her. You brought down the cliffside knowing that it would kill you both, yet you still tried to protect her. Magic is a funny thing, my little wizard. Intent is everything to our magic, and mixed with your tribal magic, your bond forged almost immediately.” She explained and they shared a look and Lyra rubbed the back of his hand with her thumb.
“What’s the call?” She asked the Tohunga who beamed at her, his wrinkled face lighting up at her words.
Calum could not tell how much time passed as his soulmate studied with his Tohunga, her attention never wavering, never leaving the old tribal elders face as he taught her the call that he’d only ever heard of. Her hand had long since dropped from Calum’s as she learned the call, but Calum could feel his heart warm.
“She will be devout to you, Calum.” Hecate’s words were almost soothing in their manner, his shoulders relaxing just a touch.
“The devotion would be returned in kind. Does Leta know what is to happen when I return?” Hecate shook her head sadly.
“She is forbidden of giving us that information if it directly affects our descendants. You all waged war against the Siren’s, a prophecy that we never thought would come to pass. Myself and your Tohunga have, shall we say, a free pass currently because in the eyes of the law and the land, you’re both dead.” A sharp twist in his heart made him sigh.
“It’s going to hurt when we return, isn’t it?” He was beginning to feel the old magic dance around them as Lyra began to chant the words once more. He could see his Tohunga was being impressed with her determination.
“Would you really stay here, leaving her alone in a world that she will be bound to restore? Where she will not be able to take her life until her duty is done? Would you do that to her?” Calum knew his answer.
“Will I return as I am?”
“No. That demon will have no control. You technically died and that is the end of his power. When you go back, should you choose to do so, you will come back as a magical, as is your birthright.”
“The brand will disappear?” His voice has grown quieter and Hecate hissed.
“The brand will vanish which will further show proof to your claim that Lucifer does not own you and he never will.” A sneer crossed her face. “Leta will pull him back in line. If he dares to defy I will make him suffer for what he did to you.” Calum felt his heart warm at her words and before he could stop himself, he leaned forward and wrapped his arms around her.
“Thank you.” His voice was quiet, and it took the Goddess a second to respond before her arms wrapped around him in return, her head turning slightly to press a kiss to his temple.
“You are mine to protect my child, if it means fighting Lucifer then so be it.”
“Tell me, are my family suffering?” Calum pulled back from the hug, allowing himself to revel in the reassurance from Lyra, her hand resting on his shoulder as his gaze landed on the Tohunga and the old tribal elder shook his head.
“They’re at peace now. They feast with your ancestors and watch over you.”
And Calum felt the peace settle in his heart as Lyra squeezed his shoulder gently.
“When will the siren magic snap?” Lyra finally asked and Hecate smiled kindly at her.
“Now.”

Lyra could feel Calum’s body next to her. She needed to stop herself from letting the heartbreak settle. She trusted that Hecate and Calum’s Tohunga were being honest with both of them.
Pulling herself up, her eyes taking in how her fingers had curled around his hand and a smile slipped across her lips as she sat up.
Gasps echoed around her, making her head jolt up in shock as various people stared at her in awe.
Bodies were shoved out of the way, and her eyes met Melody and Serina’s. They let out a breath of shock before they launched forwards, Melody reaching Lyra first, her arms wrapping around her tightly.
Lyra took in a deep breath as Serina wrapped her arms around her as well.
“I need the witches.” She finally breathed, twisting her body before yelping in shock.
“You’ve probably got some broken bones. You were both under rubble when we found you.” Serina explained, trying to push Lyra back but she shook her head.
“Witches.” She hissed as she pushed herself off and a pair of slender yet strong arms wrapped around her body, holding her up.
“What do you need us for.” Lyra looked up, her eyes studying the witch who had clearly been crying, tear tracks on her cheeks.
“I was protected by the sirens magic. It protected him enough so that Hecate could help protect him. But there is a tribal call to bring back loved ones.” And a gasp escaped the witches.
“Stand at his head, give me a second.” And the next few moments were a hubbub as witches began to move and circle around herself and Calum.
“Come back to me, love.” Her words were drowned out by the chants that were growing louder. She could feel the magic and her eyes caught the sight of Ashton at the opposite end, his own baritone voice mixing with the witches.
Various things happened at once as the chanting grew louder.
Calum’s back arched off the table where he lay, another yell echoed around from the crowd and Ashton collapsed to his knees.
And that was when Calum took in a deep breath and Lyra nearly cried.
“You’re okay, you’re alive.” She got out, her lips touching his forehead before letting her own rest against his.
The chanting had stopped and a roar of fury echoed around. Lyra’s eyes widened.
“Cal, baby I need you to sit up.” She didn’t even care if it was too soon to be so smitten with her soulmate, but she knew he needed to be kept safe.
“Where is my demon?” Lucifer barrelled through just as Lyra had gotten him sat up. Ashton was quick enough to get to his feet and stand between the raging King of Hell and his best friend.
“He’s not yours anymore.” Lyra snapped at Lucifer, watching as cracks appeared in the ground beneath his feet. She wasted no time in ripping off his shirt, showing the unblemished skin, free from Lucifer’s mark.
Lucifer stepped forward, grabbing ahold of Ashton’s bicep to move him out of the way, only to be met with a sharp pain, drawing his hand back to his chest.
“He is no longer yours, Lucifer. Neither of them are. Leave.” Jade hissed to the enraged King.
Before he could make any comment or anyone could say anything else, a dark skinned woman emerged from the crowd, touching Michael’s shoulder and nodding to Serina before her fingers gripped his shoulder.
“I would suggest that you think very carefully. You’re on thin ice as it is, Lucifer.” And the King froze.
There were confused mutterings before gasps from the wolves came. But the moment the gasps came, the two were gone in a flash of light and Michael smirked.
“And that, people, is why we don’t actively piss off our goddess.”
Luke couldn’t help but laugh as his arms circled Carina; his lips finding hers. His body was practically singing knowing that she was safe and that was when his hunger became known to him, keeping his face pressed into her neck.
“What happened to his mark?” Ashton’s voice carried over and Carina was grateful when one of the witches had the sense to hand her a blood bag.
“When he never returned, we were prepared for the eventuality of being contacted by you. As weeks began to pass, we realised that it was most likely the sirens were going to be starving him too.” She explained as she sliced the corner and passed it to Luke. He didn’t argue as he drained the bag greedily.
Her attention turned to the group, Luke following her actions after a sharp elbow to his gut.
“Hecate explained that I technically died. His hold over me went with it. I’m magical with some traits from being a demon. Nothing more.” Calum explained as a few of the witches forced both of them to lie back down.
The adrenaline was wearing off and it was obvious to anyone that both of them were in agony.
“You’ve got so many broken bones, both of you. It’s going to take at least a week to heal, even with the advanced healing.” Jade explained and Calum grimaced.
“They can stay with us.” Luke spoke up, his eyes flickering to Carina who nodded. “I owe them a debt, they saved our lives. It’s the least I could do. Plus Carina will be on hand to help with the healing.”
“I think all of us are agreed when we say we owe them both a debt.” Michael finally spoke and Calum fought the blush that was threatening to cover his cheeks.
“None of the life debt business.” He finally muttered, earning scattered laughs from those that were listening.
“We still owe you a debt all the same.” Melody spoke up, her fingers sliding into Ashton’s. His lips curved up into a gentle smile as he brought her knuckles to his lips.
“You don’t owe me a debt, Melody. Keep him happy and I’ll consider the debt satisfied.” Calum nodded to Ashton and she bowed her head towards him. Ashton groaned.
“At least neither of us have to worry about our asses being handed to us by some errant demons.” He finally muttered and Calum laughed, sucking in a sharp breath when the pain got too much.
“Like they’d dare piss off Leta. Hecate already said she’d go toe to toe with the King. I doubt he’d be willing to fight two of them and win.” This earned sniggers from the wolves and witches alike.
It was a few more hours before the crowds finally dispersed before the humans reached the area and Carina finally began to prep her two charges for transport.
“This will make for an uncomfortable journey, but you need my magic to get you past our protections.” She explained softly and both hummed in acceptance.
The transport itself was disorientating, but with the broken bones and damaged body, both of them let out hisses of pain once they’d reached the destination. Carina was immediate with her reactions, using her magic to ease both of their pains before moving them to one of the many spare rooms in the house.
“I’ll be back in a few moments with everyone else.” She was gone before either could respond, so they simply lay in the quiet, their fingers entwined.
“I don’t know about you, but when we’re better, how about a vacation?” Calum held back his snort, the small smile nearly turning into a grimace as pain flashed across his face.
“Best plan I think. I can take you to my old tribe too.”
His head turned ever so slightly to see her eyes light up at his suggestion, her fingers squeezing his as best she could.
“Lets focus on getting better first then.” Lyra’s voice was gentle but Calum felt like his body was on cloud nine.
He knew at those words that he truly would do anything for her.
“Your wish is my command, sweetheart.”

Phoenix Down | Chapter 4 End
The summoning circle fills with silence, as the end of Theophania’s execution plays. There’s nothing to say and nothing that can be done for her now. Regardless of her intentions, she was treated as harshly as the past murderers had been. The silence, however, does not last long. And of course it’s the worst person possible who interrupts.
“It always is such a pain to kill someone with the Rebirth Domain.” Calum gives a little huff of annoyance. He acts like he was bothered by this, not because someone died, but because the execution took longer than he wanted it to. Doesn’t he normally enjoy these with his friends? It’s this normally a celebration for him? Well, he quickly makes clear why.
“Now, I have a date to get ready for. Tree, make sure none of them follow me, I would hate to get blood on my shoes now.” He begins to walk off, only to realize he’s not received a reply. “Tree, speak when you are spoken to.”
Amber, tense from being directly addressed by him, forces out a weak, “Yes, your Majesty.”
“Good. Now keep them here for a few minutes while I return home.”
Kali bristles and trembles with rage, but bites her tongue to keep herself from speaking.
If you try to follow, if you try to hurt the king, you meet much the same fate that Avery did a few moments before Theophania’s execution. Wrapped in vines and unable to move. But once three minutes have passed, Amber releases you.
You are now free to return to what you were doing before, but do you really want to do that? Everything has soured now. The thought of returning to the manor might even be dreadful to you now, or perhaps you want to get farther from the tree, from this place. But you’re free to go now. If only you had more freedom in other regards.

Arthur’s POV
“Arthur please! Open the door my love, I know what it may seem like to you, but I assure you that its not.” (Y/n) pleaded from the other side. I sat down on the mattress in our chamber contemplating whether or not it was true. Should I believe what my wife so desperately is trying to reassure me off. Or should I stick with my gut feeling and tell her how I have felt for the last 4 years. Her constant pounding on the door finally gets to me and I make my way to open it. “I wish to be left alone at the moment (y/n).” Her arms circle around my waist and I can feel her face wetting by back with tears. “Arthur please, talk to me. Why have you run off. You know that I love you. I do not want him, all he does is bring me pain and you take that away. So please, talk to me!” (y/n) murmurs into my back. As much as it pains me to do so I pry her hands off of me and sit us down on the bed. All I do is long for her touch, but this is not okay. I cannot keep feeling this way and go on pretending that I could have ever stood a chance against him. “(y/n), look at me. I love you and I always will. But its evident that you love him. and I honestly can say that I know I will never stand a chance against him, because the thought of you possibly running back to him has always been on my mind since the day we got married.”
Her eyes showed so much pain that confessing this felt as if I was driving a knife through her heart. “Arthur, I love you. What can I do to show you that. Yes I confess that I was in love with him, but that was long ago and I have left it in the past in order to build a future with you. Whom I love and who I share and will continue to share beautiful children with. So please don't shut me out, Arthur.” She says leaning our foreheads together and holding my face in her gentle hands. “Ok, however I want to be able to process things by myself. So I have decided to have the guest room across the hall prepared only until I figure things out.” With out giving her a chance to fight back, I place my lips on hers and savour the kiss as if it were our last. Meeting her eyes was something I wanted to avoid as I knew that just looking at her broken expression would make me change my mind. I hastily make my way out of the room, but sneak a quick glance over my shoulder to find my wife staring off into the direction where I once sat. With tears streaming down her eyes...
Your POV
What had I done? Why was I such fool to not see what my husband was clearly going through? Millions of questions rushed into my mind about how to go about this situation. I loved Arthur, I was clear on that. But he spoke the truth, there was something in me that could not let Ivar go and it took hurting my husband and Ivar to figure that out. As I sulked I forgot about the doctor whom I had asked to see me earlier. I was having really bad stomach pains and my breasts were more tender then they had ever been. So I wanted to make sure that I was not sick, as that would have been the last thing I needed on my plate at the moment. “My Queen, are you alright? Do you wish to push back this appointment, I dont mind coming by later when you're better.” The doctor spoke from behind me. “Yes, it seems so. Ill let the servant girl know if I need you doctor. Im sorry for the inconvenience.” “Nonsense your majesty, it is my pleasure to serve you.” With a bow the doctor retreats from the room and Im left to my own thoughts once again...

“(y/n), wake up... its seems that you fell asleep on the floor. Come on I’ll help you up.” Upon hearing Hvitty’s comforting voice my eyes flutter open and I cant help the tears that song come down my face like a cascade. “(y/n)! are you alright are you hurt anywhere? Why are you crying?” Hvitserk’s eyes scan my face and my body looking for the source of my pain, which is held in my heart, but he’ll never know that. “Arthur... He...” I try to find the words to say. “What! What did he do! Did he hurt you? I swear ill kill him!” With that Hvitserk tries to let me go and run out the door, but somehow I manage to stop him. “Hvitserk, No! He didn't hurt me. I hurt him... He believes that Im in love with Ivar, and I fear that their maybe some truth to it...” I say just above a whisper, with my head held low. “(Y/N), Ive known that since before you were married. It was obvious, but I would never say anything to you because I found that it was best if I kept such observations to myself, before I found out about your father.” Lifting my head and staring directly at him, I move my head to the side with a puzzling look. “What do you mean about my father, Hvitserk?” Hvitserk now mirrors the same lost look that I have on my face. “I thought thats why you and Ivar had gotten together, because Ragnar’s not your father...”

Ivar’s POV
“Aghhhh!”Is the sound that comes out of my gritted teeth when the medicinal herbs are placed on my face. “That hurts like a bitch, get out! Ill do this myself if I have to. GO!” I yell at the servant girl who tried to cleanse and tend to the cuts on my face. “Ivar, please let the servants tend to you. I still cannot believe that Arthur punched you in the face. Hehehe, you deserved it though, how could you question the paternity of his children and not expect him to want to kill you?” Bjorn laughs as he chugs the rest of his drink down. “Well, if you actually cared about your children and the heir to your throne, you’d also be quite upset to find a Christian King claiming to be their father. Those children are mine! And its pretty evident, just look at Marjorie. She's my spitting image.” I snarl at him as the anger begins to rise in me again. “Ivar, thats your mistake and why you’ll never get (y/n) back. You believe that everything should be yours. And that people are things you can govern over, but they're not. Because those are children. And yes they may be yours, but you cannot take away what they have known because you want to be selfish.” He says with a stern look on his face, whilst getting up from his chair and making his way to the door. “Now get ready and fix yourself we have a intimate dinner to attend to with MY sister and the love of your life.” Unbeknownst to us, there was Freydis on the balcony listening to our whole conversation. And little did I know that it would come to be the thing I regretted the most.
At the dinner I notice (y/n) sit on the opposite side of the table from Arthur. This wouldn't have affected me if it wasn't for the look on both of their faces. They seemed distraught and broken. Arthur masked it well, but (y/n) was an open book for all of us to know exactly how she felt at that moment. Not much talking happened, besides Marjorie and Erik shouting at each other on who was better at riding. They reminded me a lot of myself and all I wanted was to tell them the truth, that they were my children and that they would go back to Kattegat with me to learn about the true gods and not the fable that had been told to them about their so called ‘God’.” “(Y/n) are you alright, you do not seem quite like yourself tonight.” Bjorn states with a concerned look that we all share. Even Arthur looks a bit concerned, but his body language makes it seem as if he is alright and nothing is wrong. “Sarah, could you please put Marjorie and Erik to bed? Its getting late for them and they have their lessons early in the morning.” She says with a stern and cold look in her (e/c) eyes. “Su...sure your majesty. “ At that Bjorn stands up as if to accompany Sarah, but is quickly stopped by (y/n)’s icy glare and venomous words. “Sit your ass down.” At that we all look astonished, but Hvitserk only stares at her with sadness and what seems to be sympathy. He must know why she is like this then.
Bjorn slowly sits back down on the table. A shocked look graces his face, as he cannot comprehend why she is acting this way towards her beloved older brother. “How long.” Is all she grits out through her teeth. “What do you mean, (y/n)?” My eyes meet Hvitserk’s own and the realization dawns upon me. She knows...

Your POV
“Stop with the bullshit! I cannot take anyone else lying to me!” I scream as I bang my hands against the table, stunning everyone in sight. “How long did you know that Ragnar was not my father! How long have you kept the truth from me! How long have you known that Athelstan was my father!” I could careless about everyone staring at me as if I was a mad woman. I had been lied to my whole life. All I had known had been a lie, and the people who I trusted the most in this world had been the ones keeping it a secret from me. “(Y/N)... I..I’ve know since the moment you were born. But father had sworn me into secrecy and I could not break a promise. This doesn't change anything though. You are still my sister and you will always be.” Bjorn says in a haste as tries to come closer to me, but I step back and move as far back as I can. “Did you know? Tell me! Ivar did you know that we were not siblings!” Ivar didn't even have to answer. I knew from the look in his eyes that he too had been lying to me.
“I knew.” Arthur says staring right at me. “I knew that you weren't his daughter and I knew that Ivar wasn't your brother. But I kept that information from you because all I wanted to do was have you by my side. I’m sorry, for the pain I have caused you (y/n). Im sorry for being selfish and not telling you the truth, but I now see that I was wrong and as of tomorrow you are free to go back to your country. I promise that your title and lands will not be taken from you or from the children. May they be mine or his. But I cannot go on with this facade anymore.” Arthur says in the most calm demeanour as he stands up and comes to me. “You hypocrite! How dare you make me feel like shit for harbouring feelings for Ivar when you knew all along and knew that my whole life was a lie.” I scream as I run at him and slap him across the face. But before I can get another punch in I feel a strong grip holding me from behind. From the shocks and the utter feeling in my stomach I knew it could have only been Ivar. As I try desperately to release from his vice grip, my whole world comes crashing down when Sarah enters the room. With blood all over her.
“Your highnesses...Erik.... he.. he..” She tries to say through her shock. “What! What is wrong with my son!” Ivar, Arthur and I scream at the same time. “He.. he’s dying!”

We all simultaneously run after Sarah towards the doctors quarters. Ivar with his brace on, manages to run faster than all of us and busts the doors wide open. if I wasn't so worried about my son or upset about the fact they all knew Ragnar wasn't my father, I would've been impressed. “What are you doing! Get away from my son!” At that Ivar rushes towards the doctor who is bleeding Erik out. Grabbing him by the collar he slams the doctor on the wall and his sclera go into bluish hue, showing that he is in danger of breaking a bone. “Ivar stop it! Let the man go, he is just trying to help.” “Help my ass! I will not let you harm my son, do you understand me! I will not let you harm him!” At that Ivar lets the doctor go, but not without staring him down. And the doctor looking like he is about to shit himself. Rushing to Erik’s side I notice something strange. The colour of his skin is now fading and his eyes have bags under them. But what hits me the most is the memory of Uncle Rollo teaching me about poison. “He doesn't need to be bled, he needs medicine. He’s been poisoned...”
“Mama! What is wrong with Erik! He will be okay right? He has to be okay!” Marjorie begins to say as she shakes with fear. Before Arthur or I could say something to console her, Ivar bends down and takes her hands in his. “Marjorie, listen to me. Your brother is a fighter and so are you. After all were related aren't we?” Ivar says as he lifts her chin. “Yes..I suppose that we are. Is it true what they say though? Are you our father?” At that Ivar turns to me looking towards me for permission. At this point I think to myself how hard it was to learn my whole life had been a lie and that I would not want that for my children, so I nod. “Yes, Marjorie I am your father. And no your mother is not my sister. It was something that we had to say because she needed to be kept safe.” He says ever so calmly. “Safe from who?”She questions “From my mother. Your grandmother.”
Cough*Cough* Spurts of blood cover me in seconds. My attention becomes focused in on my son again. “Where is the damn antidote! Please someone hurry!” At that Hvitserk runs into the room with a small green vial. “Here take this it should help him. Lagertha gave it to me before her and father left. Something about it would come in handy some day. Here.” Shoving the vial in my hands I open it quickly and lift Erik’s head. “Drink this Erik. It should help you, my darling. Please be strong, I know you're scared, but you’ll be alright ok. Everything will be ok.” I say through tears. Today had been the worst day by far. “Mira... please help my son. I know you're always with me, but please help me now. Pray for my son and ask God to save him.”

A few hours had gone by and nobody had moved from the room. Arthur sat on the chair next to the bed with his elbows on his knees, looking straight and focused in on Erik. Bjorn and Hvitserk sat by the fireplace and were wetting some towels so that we could place them atop Eriks head. I sat on the bed next to my son and caressed his beautiful face hoping for a miracle. I had dismissed Sarah and told her to take Marjorie with her, but she would not budge. Sarah left, but Marjorie stayed and sat in Ivars lap asking him if Erik would pull through. Ivar was sweet to answer as best as he could, and I could tell that he truly cared for his children even if his demeanour wasn't the greatest. I knew that deep in my heart I would have to let him get to know them, but it still hurt especially knowing that he now was married. “Wait, where is Freydis? I haven't seen her since yesterday.” I say looking towards Ivar. “I dont know earthier to be honest, she's probably looking at some damn flowers anyway. Its best if she's far away anyway.” “Why would you say that about your wi-” “she's not my wife, at least not yet. Were not actually married, (y/n). I just said that to piss you off.” Taking a deep breath I go to stand up from the bed in order to fetch a bucket of water and some new cloths. Instead I end up on the floor cradling my belly, with a burning sensation in my chest and blood pouring out from my mouth. “(Y/n)! Mama!” I can hear the shouts around me. “Fetch the doctor! Now hurry!” The voices around me begin to fade and not before long I can feel myself drifting away.
“My baby... Save my baby...” And with that everything turns pitch black...

Lucifer and Her King (Devil!Cal AU)
Word Count: 1.5k
Warnings: Drinking, cursing, sexual implications
Chapter One
The club was aglow, and so was she. Her cheeks were flushed, her hair wild and untamed, her smile infectious and bright. She was Lucifer-- and she was about to embark on a journey labelled the beginning of her descent.
Her descent started with a man with curly brown hair, a smooth grin sliding across her face. Lucy, however timid, wasn't in the particular mood to await pursuit tonight. She felt a pull between her and the dark stranger. Though the pull nearly knocked her off of her feet, her own will pushed her harder. She finished her drink -- though she instantly forgot how it tasted -- and made her way across the room.
Calum wasn't in the mood for partying. A once-in-a-blue-moon event his friends had joked, but he wasn't in the mood for jokes, in a similar fashion. He lived life to the fullest -- drinks and girls and friends and fun. His life was great. So, why did he feel like something was missing?
The mystery girl approached him resembling an angel. Her hair -- though untamed and messy -- shone under the green light, her eyes -- though slightly glossy and unfocused -- set him on fire. He watched her as she drew closer and closer, her body water through the club's jagged rocks of dancers. When she reached him, he didn't say a word. This girl was an angel in disguise.
He smiled devilishly when she dragged him onto the dance floor. The sounds he made were even more devilish when she kissed him. When she pulled him out of the club? At that moment, he wasn't just a devil -- he was the devil.
Lucy let Calum tug her down, down, down into him as they fled further away from the music and the people in the club. Their breaths were quick, but their hands were faster. When they parked, she ran from the cab as if darkness threatened to pull her in, he ran as if it threatened him with light. Up the stairs, through the doors, onto the bed -- it was all too slow, so they moved faster. They whispered sounds they didn't know they could make, coaxing them out of each other with every buck of their hips.
His name was Calum, his voice was velvet -- soft and smooth and the fire threatening to burn her --, and he made her eyes roll back.
Her name was Lucy, her body was a rose -- beautiful and fragile and dangerous enough to spark a fire in him --, and she taught him things he thought he'd already learned.
Their bodies, as moulded together as they were, was only the beginning of a knot that would pull them both in tighter than they might be able to handle. Their lives were about to change, for better or worse, and they, at the very, very least, had that one blissful night under the stars and Fate's grim grin.

The morning sun woke Calum with a hiss. He turned over, not thinking anything of it until he remembered that he always kept the drapes windows closed. His back, now erect, dampened to a slouch when he remembered his friends must have opened them, simply to bother him. He heard a loud laugh trail underneath his door from the kitchen.
Yes, that’s it, he comforted himself in his head. Luke, Michael, and Ashton are just destroying my house, per usual. If he were anyone else, he would have thanked God for the lock on his door -- crafted of the purest titanium -- instead, his thoughts remained quiet.
He tossed and turned in a vain attempt to sleep, but they were much too loud for his eyes to close. Finally, he jumped out of bed -- growling and groaning as he dressed and brushed his teeth. He reached for the lock on his door, only to find it unhitched. The day prior seemed to drop onto him like a piano from the sky. His eyes widened as he raced towards the kitchen. A girl like her alone with his three mischievous and flirty friends? He felt a surge of possessiveness burn through him, scorching his lungs.
He skidded into the kitchen, only to find Ashton, Luke, and Michael eating donuts and drinking beers. He didn’t find them drinking beers at nine in the morning as unsettling as the lack of Lucy in his kitchen.
He skimmed the room in an instant. He didn’t find anything that even hinted at the memory of her in his apartment, Calum found nothing out of the ordinary, except the clothes she’d torn off of him so eagerly were no longer on the floor, but folded neatly on the coffee table.
“G’morning to you, too, Cal,“ Ashton joked from the counter, tipping a beer in Calum’s direction. “Nice of you to join the party, like the one you left without warning last night.“ He quipped.
However, Calum wasn’t particularly in the mood for witty banter. He gripped Ashton’s collar and slammed him against the nearest wall, his temper flaring hotter than the flames that glowed blue upon his head.
Ashton choked on the beer in his throat, but Calum didn’t mind. In fact, he licked the beer that landed on his lip and swallowed it gratefully. “Where is she?” Luke and Michael sat quietly on the counter, chewing their food calmly as they watched the scene their friends had made. It was quite entertaining, actually.
“Who the fuck is She?“ Ashton asked through quick inhales to his friend, whom he was certain had gone crazy.
Michael, the more reasonable of the bunch, ventured into the depths of Calum’s fury. "Cal? The apartment was empty when we got here," He paused, digesting Calum's reaction. His grip loosened, Ashton landing firmly back onto the ground.
"What?"
"The apartment was empty," Michael continued, taking a small sip of his coffee before continuing. "Except for you and your fuckin' snoring, of course."
Calum turned around, picking up the coffee labelled "Caleb" and gulping it down -- it scorched his throat the whole way, and he savoured it.
"I don't snore." That was all he said, and then he walked right out of his own apartment, his mind awhirl with feelings and ideas he couldn't understand.
Fate sent a piteous look towards the curly-headed boy. She knew how the story would go, but she wished she didn't.

Lucy couldn't think, not when the previous night haunted her every movement. Little did Calum know, that club was her home, working all day, partying all night. She only slept in her apartment, and rarely did so. Angel's Hell was her home, and her coworkers were her family.
Ivy leaned across the bar, her dark hair spilling over her shoulder. "You left early last night," Lucy felt her cheeks warm -- still, she continued cleaning the counter in silence. "I also caught sight of this beautiful boy with tattoos like constellations and eyes like a drug."
Lucy froze, her eyes remaining downcast, not meeting Ivy's. "He didn't see me, though." Ivy pulled away from Lucy, moving on to mop the floor before their five o'clock opening. "He only had eyes for you, El Diablo."
Ivy had given Lucy the name El Diablo because of her riveting taste for satire, knowing Lucy was an angel. At least, that's what Lucy thought.
"We just spent one night together," She finally admitted, cleaning the bar with a much faster pace, eager to switch topics. "It was nothing."
She stiffened. Ivy had already expected this answer, but hearing it was another torment entirely. "I don't trust him," She said with a quick bite.
Lucy snorted. "You don't trust any men, Ive."
Ivy spun Lucy around quickly, though Lucy was sure she hadn't placed a single hand on her. "I'm serious, Lucy," Her eyes seemed to burn, but with light instead of fire -- they were such a bright brown they were mesmerizing. "Stay away from him and his whole posse, they're bad news."
Lucy shrugged her off, memories flashing before her eyes -- the dance floor, the car ride, the bed, the morning. "It was just one night, Ivy, calm down." She tossed the cloth away, breathing harshly. "I'm probably never going to see him again, anyways." She made her way behind the counter, shrugging past Ivy. "Excuse me," Was all she said sharply before she made her way to the back of the store.
Ivy sighed, looking up towards the ceiling, or, more specifically, beyond it. "You'd better have a good plan for this." She muttered to her superiors before she returned to the floor, scrubbing away the dirt.

Dumbarton Castle (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Breatainn, pronounced [t̪unˈpɾʲɛʰt̪ɪɲ]) has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Scotland. It overlooks the Scottish town of Dumbarton, and sits on a plug of volcanic basalt known as Dumbarton Rock which is 240 feet (73 m) high.

It is possible he may have married her as his second wife.] by whom he had issue…. Chief Malcolm, as he advanced in life, became extremely corpulent, and was known as CALUM REAMHAR MATH (Good Stout Malcolm). The MEMORIAL (1767) says that he was called GILLECALUIM CAS REAMHAR (The Stout-legged Malcolm). While on a visit to his kinsman, MacLeod of Lewis, Malcolm died in the Castle of Stornoway, and his body was conveyed to Iona, where it was buried. His death took place c. 1370. He was succeeded by his eldest son.

As rehearsals begin, the cast for HAMLET at the Almeida Theatre is announced. His work as a director includes The Fever at The May Fair Hotel, Mr Burns at the Almeida, Boys and Romeo and Juliet for Headlong. He made his National Theatre debut directing The Red Barn, at the Lyttelton Theatre in October 2016.
