Winter of Wands. Art by Caitlin Cordell, from the Unruly Beings Tarot.
Winter is the time for deep rest, reflection and restoration. A positive side effect of creating space in our lives, is the expansion of the creative and generative parts of ourselves that have been dormant during the hustle of the other seasons. Maybe you are finally seeing the habits you’ve been stuck in that aren’t allowing you to be your fully expressive self. Or maybe you’re making time for creative expression that represents the goals and dreams you’ve always wanted to explore. The winter gives us time to dive deep into our truths. Allow the winter to give your mind and body the nourishment it needs for your powerful creativity to materialize.
Pictured is a dragonfly on yarrow during a winter storm. Dragonflies represent power and speed that can only be sustained through lots of food. They can help us remember to fuel up in order to support the sparks and dynamic movement we want to embody. Yarrow is a powerful healing plant. Yarrow reminds us to tend to our wounds and past hurt so that we can move forward with clarity.

OLDIES SUNDAY: Alozade - Jamaica (2002)
In a few days, Jamaica will celebrate its 62nd year of Independence. We’re just celebrating a lil early on “Oldies Sunday“. Today’s selection comes from Dancehall Artist/Producer Alozade with the track, “Jamaica“. Interview: Jared Padalecki on the ‘Walker’ Finale, What He Learned as an Executive Producer, and More
We got the chance to talk to Jared all about the Walker finale, what it was like being buried in episode 12, what he’s learned as a producer, and more.
Nerds & Beyond: Episode 11 was one of my favorite episodes, it was just incredible. What was it like having Genevieve [Padalecki] and Matt [Barr] back for that episode? Can you talk more about it?
Jared Padalecki: I mean, selfishly as Jared, I was thrilled to have Matt back. I adore Matt Barr, I love him with all my heart. It was so great to have him in Austin. Again, selfishly as Jared, I was happy to have Gen there and we brought our kids to set and they got to hold the markers and clap us onto a scene, which was really awesome.
Then selfishly as Cordell Walker, or as an actor, I got to do some weird, cool stuff that not a lot of projects give you the opportunity to explore. Damn, I mean, I’m kind of feeling this way right now… if I could go back and redo it… like if this never happened, how would I do it? How would I feel? What would it be? Would it be closure? Would it be even worse? Would it be just a further tease? There were a lot of storylines that I got to tell within that one episode. I felt really grateful for Anna [Fricke] and for our run on TV to be able to do. So, all around, I was just really excited to go play in that playground.
Nerds & Beyond: Then in episode 12, we see Cordell get saved by the team after being buried alive. What was that process like?
Jared: You know what’s funny, is that on Walker, I’ve done a lot of great, fun, kind of random or strange stunt sequences, like driving a truck full speed up a parking garage, and being in fight sequences in strange areas. There have always been these things like racing horses with Dave Annable around the barn… there have been times where it’s like, “Okay, well, there’s probably some danger here,” and they’re gonna come and say like, “Hey, do you feel comfortable? We’re gonna be here. Just say if it doesn’t work for you.”
That scene specifically was probably the most they’ve ever come up to me and been like, “Hey, sorry, we’ll have a straw for you. You can breathe. We’ll do this, we’ll do that.” They were really concerned. I am not claustrophobic, thank God. So, I didn’t have some of the concerns that a lot of the other producers, stunt coordinators, and safety coordinators did. I was like, “This kind of sounds cool, this is gonna look fucking cool.”
I actually talked to [Jensen] Ackles, because he had done “Lazarus Rising”, the premiere of season four [of Supernatural], where he was buried in a similar situation, and got his two cents on it. And I was like, “I’m kind of excited.” To have an episode like 411, you can’t just all of a sudden [go], “Oh, Cordell is back, here we go.” There needs to be some drama. There needs to be some cool stuff. It was one of the few things that I don’t think I’ve ever done before. I’ve done plenty of stuff in my career, but I don’t think I’ve been buried alive. And so I was like, “Cool, let’s go ahead and get this Boy Scouts badge.”
For the buried alive part, they dug a grave and they first buried me up to my shoulders. Coby [Bell] was having some back issues, he had been on a flight and he had just kind of tweaked his back. We’re like, “Well, Jeff Pierre’s here, so guess what, Jeff? You’re carrying Padalecki.” I’m 205-210 pounds, and that’s not an easy way to pull somebody out of a grave, there’s no leverage. But Jeff Pierre is a king among men. And, he’s like, “Alright, I got him.” So between Jeff and Coby, they lifted me out and wiped the dirt and blood off my face. That was exciting.
What I enjoyed less, was spending all day in that makeup because then we had the sequence where Captain James walked Cordell over to Cassie and Trey, and so I kinda just stayed in that makeup and outfit for twelve hours. The actual doing of the acting was amazing, but trying to go to lunch with all that stuff on your face… you don’t want to wash it off, it’ll take an hour back on. So it’s just sort of like, I want to scratch my face, I’m sweaty and hot and nasty. But all in all, I knew it was gonna be something that, until the day I die, I’ll be proud to have been a part of. So, you kind of grin and bear it.
Nerds & Beyond: That sounds intense, though!
Jared: It was yeah, it was, in a great way. It looked intense.
Nerds & Beyond: When you got the official call that Walker would no longer continue, what was that call like?
Jared: I did have some version of a heads up, but it still was like we didn’t believe it or understand it. The heads up was obvious when they put out their upfront list of shows they were intending for the ’24-’25 season, and we weren’t listed. You didn’t have to be a producer on the show to go like, “Well, this is strange.” There were obvious hints and clues both publicly and privately that kind of leaned toward, “This doesn’t look good.”
But the strange thing is that’s been my life, that’s been my career. Gilmore Girls was on the bubble for many years. Supernatural was on the bubble for many years. And the season three, season four, kind of world that TV shows live on, it’s like, well, if you do five or six, you can probably do twenty-five or twenty-six. But you’ve got to get to five or six. We all just kind of were like, “Well, let’s look at the numbers.” And, the show would air, it would be the most watched show on CW, and we’d be like, “Okay, cool. Brad Schwartz said if the performance maintained, then we’re gonna go again. Well, we’re maintaining, we’re still the most-watched show on the network.” We were worried privately, but then we were like, “Well, shoot, we’re fulfilling our obligation. Why would they possibly not pick us up?”
It’s really funny, I find myself talking about the show [and] I’m having a tough time saying canceled. I’m kind of saying, just, we weren’t picked up for season five, which I guess is one and the same. I’m finding it a bit easier to just say we weren’t picked up instead of saying we were canceled. Just semantics.
I didn’t find out officially until probably an hour before I made that post. So, I legit didn’t know officially until… I’ve learned in this industry until it’s official, it’s not official. We always joke as actors, It’s like, you get a job, and they’re like, “Well, how do you feel? Are you excited?” You’re like, “Well, yeah… I’ll be excited when I get my first paycheck.” When they aired me on television, I was the third or fourth Dean on Gilmore Girls. So, you shoot the show, you get your paycheck and then they recast and they shoot again, they get their paycheck, then they recast again, you get your paycheck. So you never really know, you kind of live in this limbo of like, “Well, is it gonna air? Am I going to be on more?” I finished the episode and I got the paycheck, but it hasn’t aired yet, so they can still recast me. It happens more often than I think people realize.
I maintained hope and to this day, sitting at the Side Step with John Patterson today, I still have this weird hope in my head. Like you know Wednesday [the day of the finale] is gonna happen, and they’re gonna realize how amazing the show is, how little they pay for it, and how high the quality is, and they’re gonna come to their senses. The way my day worked out, I think it was May 22 or 21, whatever that day was I made that post, I got a call from David Stapf at CBS and he gave it to me straight. He’s like, “Hey, man. Here’s the deal. Walker’s not gonna go season five.” I was sort of like, “Okay, thank you for calling me.” By the way, somebody like David Stapf doesn’t need to call me, his assistant can call me, he can send me an email, they can post it on his own through CBS channels. But he gave me the quality character move to go, like, “I want to call Jared. I don’t want it to be announced until I talk to Jared and ask him how he wants to announce it.” Then he said to me, “Hey, if you want to talk to Brad, he’d love to talk to you as well.” I was like, “Okay, of course. Yeah.” Brad and I have worked together for a year, and, you know, I was still super confused. I’m super confused now. So I was sort of like, “Okay, I don’t know what to say. My head’s kind of spinning, I leave in three days for Europe for a month. But yeah, I’ll absolutely talk to Brad.” So then David and I hung up, and it was a great conversation. I mean, he was very flattering of the show and the family we have and sort of himself seemingly kind of confused about the way it was all going down and the linear TV world that we live in. But he was like, “This is where we kind of sit,” and I just was extremely grateful for the conversation.
I called Brad and Brad kind of said the same. Brad reiterated, “Hey, dude, you know, you’ve been on CW since its inception. We’ll follow your lead here. Do you want to announce it yourself? Do you want us to announce it? Do you want to avoid it entirely, or do you want to be a part of it? We’ll go with your gut.” And my gut was, I have a great relationship with the fandom, to use a generic term, and I was like, “I actually would love to be the one that kind of says it.” So they obliged and I scrambled together a quick post, just being as honest as possible, and sent it out there. There was zero time between finding out and announcing it. It took me half an hour or whatever to try and figure out how to try and communicate how grateful I was, and how much love I had for everybody before sending it out, but it was a quick turnaround.
Nerds & Beyond: The finale has moments that seemed to leave the characters in a good space. Was that a conscious choice to sort of wrap things up on the off chance there wouldn’t be another season?
Jared: 100%. We talked, because at the time when we were shooting 12-13 which we cross-boarded, we didn’t know if we were picked up or not. We kind of assumed we were judging by the numbers and what we had heard from the network prior about if the numbers remained, and they did. It didn’t feel like it was something you could appropriately wrap up in an episode anyway. Like, we didn’t want to deliver a bad episode just for the sake of ‘wrapping up a storyline’. So I think what we wanted, not just if there would have been seasons five through fifteen, but if there would have been season four and done, was this idea that all the characters still had hope. I mean, it’s difficult to wrap up a TV show, right? You can do the whole they’re at a diner or you can do the whole ‘everybody dies’, but neither felt appropriate for Walker and the cast of characters. So, we kind of talked about what is something that if we end here, we’re happy with, but if we carry on, it’s seamless to go forward. And everybody, every character has something that we want to watch. So we left it there and there were back and forths. There were conversations, obviously, but ultimately, it came down to every character has something in their life that they can look forward to. They also have problems and that’s life, you have problems and you have opportunities, but I’m very happy with the finale.
Nerds & Beyond: How do you feel about Cordell’s decision to take a leave of absence and take his family on vacation?
Jared: I think it’s been a long time coming. I think it’s a great statement on mental health and work-life balance, and it’s something that I’m kind of in the process of thinking about myself right now. Twenty-four years in the industry and nineteen years as number one on the call sheet, it takes a lot out of you and you sacrifice time with your kids, with your spouse, with your friends, with yourself. And I think it can at times not only be beneficial, but it can be necessary. So, I was proud of Cordell for making that decision, and I was excited to see how he came back after he had some time, but that’ll live in our imaginations, I suppose.
Nerds & Beyond: Cordell has made such incredible character growth from the first season to now. What has been your favorite part of getting to play him over the last four seasons?
Jared: What I really loved about Walker, and Cordell specifically, is that we got to see somebody who was flawed and who made mistakes and was humble, who tried. Sometimes he was a little slow to learn, but ultimately he tried to learn, he was eager to learn, eager to humble himself and be humbled around people he loved and trusted. So, that was a good reminder in my own personal life of like, “Hey, when someone says something a thousand times, maybe just listen, give it a shot. Why not?” You know, life happens… and it’s about what to do, what we can do better, what others can do better, how to ask, how to accept help. And so Walker remained as open-minded as a flawed human being could remain. I really appreciated that.
Nerds & Beyond: Do you have a favorite memory or moment from this last season?
Jared: Gen and I, during the ceremony/funeral scene in 411, had our kids there. Just the way it worked out, they hadn’t been able to be there a lot even though ironically, it was shot in Austin. But we shoot during the school year so they’re in school, or even season one, it was the COVID protocol. So if you weren’t vaccinated and didn’t have a mask in season one, it would have been that they’re twenty feet away in a mask, swabs up their nose, and wouldn’t have been a great experience anyways. So by the time 411 came and Anna [Fricke] was there directing and you know, she created the characters in the show, that was really special.
I think the speech that Cordell gives at August’s graduation was one of those moments… we’re at Storm Ranch, hadn’t been there all season, and the majority of the cast was there, and we got to hang out and laugh. It was this beautiful night in Austin, Texas. It was just one of those feelings… I had that feeling every time we shot a dinner table scene or breakfast scene where when we got everybody on set… it was just a great time and we did work I’m really proud of. It was just great to see everybody’s face and everyone working together cohesively, so I think those two, just offhand, stuck out to me the most.
Nerds & Beyond: After the news of the cancellation, were you able to take anything from the set?
Jared: Yeah, I took some of the clothes that meant something to me and a four-season show, several changes a day, there were racks and racks and racks of clothing. I went back to certain things that really are kind of like hallmarks for me. I have Duke’s outfit, I have his Texas Rangers hat, I have that blue suit I wore with Twyla, I have a few things that really just meant a lot to me wardrobe-wise. I have my boots, I have a couple of cowboy hats, and set-wise I have the Texas mug from the Side Step and I grabbed the pool cue from the Side Step. I was laughing, in season one or two, I brought my own pool cue from home to use in the show, and then I think I went home and forgot that I’d taken it, so I was like, “I donated one so now I’m just taking it back.” I have a few little knickknacks that are special to me. One of the things that I received as a gift was my Ranger belt. I wore it all the time and it was both the bane of my existence because they’re not super comfortable, but also just something really special. That will sit on my desk in my office forever. I also have my Ranger parking Cordell Walker little emblem that I’ll put somewhere in my garage.
Nerds & Beyond: Walker was your first Executive Producer gig. Is that something you want to continue with further?
Jared: That’s kind of all I’m interested in. Acting is fun and can be fun at times, but I love the nuts and bolts of it, of trying to figure out several characters, how it all works together, how it all affects each other. I would happily just EP forever. I think acting is a bit more of a commitment. Again, I don’t not enjoy it. It’s fun, I love it, but I like exploring scenes. I love trying to go through different iterations of characters or their motivations, figuring out why they would make the decisions they make.
I would love to keep developing. You know, if a role comes up that makes sense, and it’s exciting or it’s somebody I want to work with, or a project I’m excited about, or a director I’ve never worked with that I want to then, yeah, call me up and I’ll see if Gen doesn’t mind watching the kids for a couple of weeks, or a couple months. But in the meantime, I like reading a book more than telling people what book I read, if that makes sense.
Nerds & Beyond: Everyone I’ve talked to about Walker has said that it has an exceptional set atmosphere. A lot of people attribute that atmosphere to you, as well. Why was it so important to foster that kind of environment where there’s a real work-life balance?
Jared: That’s the intense loss I feel. As much as I love Walker, the character, and Walker, the show, I feel a deep loss about what happened that didn’t make it to a television screen. The relationships that were built and fostered, the work atmosphere… I think over many years and almost 500 episodes of television, I’ve seen firsthand how a toxic atmosphere doesn’t save time. The more you yell, the more you gripe and bitch, and blame doesn’t mean that you’re gonna go faster and higher quality. Set people up for success, and hopefully, they set you up for success also. And then all of a sudden a day that could be twelve hours is nine hours. Like, “Wow… I’m home three hours earlier.”
I certainly cannot take credit for it. I mean, I’m sure I had a heavy vote in that arena. Kim Manners said something to Jensen Ackles and me many, many years ago. I think it was season one. In a True Kim Manners attitude, it was something like, pardon my French, “I spend more time with you fuckers than I do my wife, my kids, our dog, and my home. So if I’m not having a good time, why the fuck would I be here?” And it just made sense. No one’s holding a gun to our head telling us, “Hey, you better go act.” So if you’re not having a good time, then, “Hey, go find something and I wish you well. And if I’m not having a good time, then what am I doing here?” So I think we all reached that place on Walker.
I loved the Supernatural set, and I love it to this day and I hope we get to see each other again. The Walker set was just even more of a family. We’re all at home, we all went through horrible, horrible situations as far as people getting sick or in car accidents or pandemics or strikes, and everybody just felt like family.
Nerds & Beyond: You can tell just how much of a close-knit family you all were, so I can’t imagine how hard that loss is. I know it just finished airing and you’re not that far removed from it yet, but looking back, what are you going to take away from your experience on Walker?
Jared: It can be done. I think that’s going to be a message that sticks with me in all aspects of my life, til the day I die. It can be done. Surround yourself with good people and positivity. When you start thinking about like, “Oh, I’ll never be able to do this. Oh, this will never happen.” Walker was proof that it can be done. When you allow yourself to… I’d rather trust and have my heart broken than never trust and never fall in love. I trusted Walker and I fell in love and it was gone too soon. And it will be, to quote Jeff Buckley, “the tear that hangs inside my soul forever.” But, it can be done and it reignited my belief in people and storytelling. Best idea wins. Be honest and be humble. So to your point, I’m still fresh off and I haven’t yet really swallowed all my feelings and emotions enough to digest them, but just thrilled that we proved it could be done. And we’ll always know it.
Nerds & Beyond: Be proud of it, for sure. I love that there’s been a theme in the last few episodes about not being sad that it’s over, being glad that it happened.
Jared: Yeah. I’ll take that as well.
Nerds & Beyond: Fans have built an incredible community within the Walker family. Is there anything you’d love to say to them?
Jared: So many things I’d love to say. First and foremost, thanks for the trust. Thanks for the passion. I know that when Supernatural ended a lot of our Supernatural family trusted enough to kind of come give Walker a try. I feel like maybe after Supernatural ended many probably felt that it was gone too soon, but they trusted that life went on and came over and it’s really special. That’s where I find myself right now.
And so seeing their example, I’m just grateful. I’m just a guy who happens to act, and it’s an honor when someone’s interested in what you do creatively. Thank you, now and always.

Walker S01E04 Don't Fence Me In
Cordi is genuinely a sweet person. He's not arrogant or competitive even. His old partner is promoted and guy is happy for him. His new partner has trust issues but Cordi is trying to break the ice. He has Liam on Bel's case to ensure her parents don't get deported
i didn't realise that it was Duke's baseball cap that freaks Cordi out when he first sees August with that box. I always thought it was the box
Bonham yelling for Cordell is so dad energy 🤣🤣
the cute middle name banter between Micki and Cordell.
Stella's questionable taste in men though 😬😬
Never liked Trevor even before they revealed his connection to the Rodeo Kings
but Trey and Micki (Tricki?) were so cute! He was always supportive of her but then she to ruin it with Garrison
the picture moment between Cordell and August is cute
Gif #4, enough said!
In love with this soundtrack: Higher by Twin Buffalo

The climactic chapter of the Monstrous Arcana sahuagin trilogy is Sea of Blood (1997). It is better than the previous chapter, but is still marred by questionable design choices. Like the fact that the NPC who guides the party to the sahuagin city betrays the players, leading to their imprisonment. At which point they are sort of rescued by a faction of sahuagin who oppose the suspicious schemes of their king, in a manner reminiscent of Vault of the Drow. A lot of the adventure is designed to be a sandbox, so these narrative shackles feel particularly strange.
There’s a lot of Lovecraftian stage dressing, which culminates in the big reveal that the sahuagin were created when an elder species of elves experimented on a weird kind of fish monsters. Plot twist: elves are assholes!
At least there is lots of Arnie Swekel art?
Oh, worth noting that while still technically a generic setting, this trio of adventures is less generic than the beholders, as it is set in the same world as Gates of Firestorm Peak and other Bruce Cordell adventures, a place called Neverness. That world never became a fully fledged branded campaign setting, but its locations and lore were nevertheless naturally developed across a number of products.

twenty questions for fic writers
tagged to do the do by @prince-of-elsinore, ty ty for thinking of me
How many works do you have on ao3?
211 (and elsewhere, maybe a dozen we don't talk about, bc they suck, on livejournal; maybe a couple dozen short pieces here on tumblr that have never migrated to ao3)
What's your total ao3 word count?
1,515,103
What fandoms do you write for?
Almost all Supernatural, but also some video game fandoms (FF, DA, maybe BG3 soon), MCU, etc. usual suspects.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. oh so good, oh so fine -- 993 kudos 2. there will be better days -- 846 kudos 3. see things so much clearer -- 621 kudos 4. into the flood again -- 602 kudos 5. side two, track one -- 558 kudos maybe someday we'll break 1000, lol
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Absolutely I do, and would find it rude not to. I know other people have all kinds of reasons they don't respond but I don't have any of those reasons, especially since I'm pathetically grateful every time someone bothers to say they liked something, lol. If anyone's even a tiny bit encouraged to become a repeat reader by the writer responding, I want to encourage that as much as possible. Plus, every once in a while, you can get a dece conversation going in the comments! Find a like-minded fan! That's worth any effort to compose a few sentences of thanks. The only comments I don't respond to are emoji strings or cut-and-paste 'another kudos here' comments, because they're not actually comments. (I appreciate the thought, but... I don't want them.)
What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I have had some beta friends who would argue about this one, lol. I guess the saddest is probably the hollow summer, since the whole plot is kind of hurt/no comfort. I don't believe in a successful boy king, let's say that.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
again, probably depends on how you define 'happy'. glory days is probably the most cheerful; for me, the happy comes better with more experience behind it, so the thirty-third yard would maybe be my personal choice.
Do you get hate on fics?
nope; worst I ever got was some twerp who actually responded to someone else's comment, bitching that I didn't put the right peepee in the right poopyhole. But only one of those, ever, and safely ignored. idk, I don't attract that much.
Do you write smut?
...yes.
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
only one, and it only sort of counts -- i heard love was blind, which is Cordell Walker/Dean Winchester, but of course the point is that Dean's getting the body of his brother by other means. I like crossovers but I usually want there to be a point beyond 'let's mash these two faves together and see what happens'; I'm more inclined toward doing a whole-universe fusion, e.g. fully placing characters with what you can salvage of their key backstory elements into a universe not their own... which I guess would also count as a crossover, wouldn't it. so I also did that with putting the Winchesters into the Dragon Age 2 plot, in whatever we were before. definitely 'crazier' than the first one here, lol.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I think that's the kind of thing that happens on WattPad. Who cares.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes, a few.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I tried; it didn't work. Both people need to be contributing to the writing for it to really count as 'co-written'; nevertheless it's stuck with both author names on ao3 because I don't think there's a way to change that.
What's your all-time favorite ship?
I think from context this should be clear. Although will also forever hold many small candles for the little guys.
What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
the aforementioned "co-written" fic, which was meant to be a huge series. The first fic is finished because I brute-forced my way through it, but there was a full five-season arc we were going to try to get through. Alas. The first one is decent, though, and works as a complete fic on its own: In a Cursed Hour.
What are your writing strengths?
voice, pacing, naturalism; characterization, though that can be argued in a fan-space
What are your writing weaknesses?
plot -- I find it intensely boring. Avoidance of plot then tends to flatten stories into similar non-arcs; I don't mind that, but it's a skill to exercise.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I'll only do Spanish, and that's only because I studied it for eight years. Even then it's usually the wrong choice, unless it's a fully blended multilingual story (which most are not, and in the wrong hands it comes off as absurd); better to convey through the POV character either understanding it or not, and dealing with it in narrative instead of straight dialogue. Although a word or two here or there is nbd, clearly.
First fandom you wrote for?
Final Fantasy VIII
Favorite fic you've written?
well, questions, you got me, because I don't believe in favorites. at this moment in terms of writing skill I think the best might be asceticism, but in terms of one that sits in my head and fully just is canon, lol, it might be there will be better days, mentioned above. the only heaven fic I need. I guess that says something.
kind of interesting to look at the stats, if also stressful. let's get some other writers to be interested/stressed -- uhh @redmyeyes, @phynali, @hellhoundsprey, @stillwaterseas, @whiskeycherrypie
some shots in the dark :)

2023 Walkerverse Fanfiction Awards
Here's my choices for @theladywyn's fanfic awards event. Thank you to everyone who wrote fanfiction this year—I read so many great stories! Special shoutout to both @theladywyn and @walker-extended-universe for carrying the Walker fanfiction community. You guys are phenomenal!
+Favorite Character Centric Fic
Randall's Story by Descended_from_Hufflepuffs (@walker-extended-universe)
The title explains it all. Randall gets the love that he deserves. Honestly, we need more Randall fic.
+Favorite Angst Fic
when your floorboards start to rot, pray there are not bodies buried beneath by @theladywyn
His fist connects with real solid flesh and there’s a familiar surprised cry. Cassie.
A beautiful fic about accepting your past and learning how to be vulnerable. Plus, it really showcases Cordell and Cassie's relationship.
+Favorite AU (completely new setting) fic
Of Love and Honor by Descended_from_Hufflepuffs (@walker-extended-universe)
Cordell is the knight assigned to Princess Emily's personal protection. They were never meant to fall in love, but they do.
This is perfect for anyone who enjoys secret lover fics. For only a little more than a thousand words, it really ropes you into their relationship!
+Favorite AU (divergence from canon event) fic
See No Evil by sakuranomi808
An Alternate Universe story where Cordell doesn't leave for his undercover case with the Rodeo Kings after Emily's death and Liam becomes the District Attorney. Some things stay the same and some things very drastically change.
What can I say? This fic is beautifully written. It's a fascinating exploration into morality vs legality. It's the perfect mix of unsettling and tense and had me on the edge of my seat at times!
+Favorite WIP (a fic not yet finished)
What are the odds? by Descended_from_Hufflepuffs (@walker-extended-universe)
A strange coincidence leads to a mix up that our heroes may never recover from.... Assuming anyone realizes the mistake. Or: in which Cordell dies and Sam gets mistaken as a Texas Ranger.
An intriguing SPN/Walker fic. I would absolutely love to see where this goes. It sets up so much potential for a good emotional hurt/comfort fic!
+Favorite Episode Tag/Missing Scene Fic
To Lead Me Home by sakuranomi808
Timestamp between 3x15 and 3x16. A quiet, emotional moment between brothers when Cordell returns home to the ranch.
A sweet moment between the brothers shows how much their relationship has evolved since the beginning of the show.
+Favorite Sick!Fic
Hold my hair, Wipe my face by slytheringraven (@the-slythering-raven)
Cassie Perez really really should have stayed home today. She even had all her medical leaves intact because she never got sick. Until now, that is..
Such a cute story! This fic just highlights all that I love about Cordell and Cassie.
+Favorite Hurt/Comfort Fic
there's a white flag waiting just to find out what we're made of by @theladywyn
Things go very wrong at the medal ceremony for Cassie and August. 3x14 AU.
This is just *chefs kiss* This fic reminds us all why we hate Kevin Golden and why Cassie rules. As if it couldn't get any better, it also has such cute moments between Cassie and August!
+Favorite Ship Fic
Pounding Headache by Catxx
Trey keeps the fact that he gets migraines from Walker, which is fine until one hits.
Our Neck of the Woods by Descended_from_Hufflepuffs (@walker-extended-universe)
Liam convinced Ben to come out to one of the family cabins for a special couples get away. Ben still has his doubts but Liam can be very persuasive.
For those who like cozy, fluffy slash fic, these two are perfect for you!
+Fic You Can't Stop Thinking About
oh the past has no teeth, reaching for something it holds dear by @theladywyn
“I know I taught you better than that, Liam.” Cordell?! It’s been over twenty years since Liam last heard his big brother’s voice and he thinks this is it; he’s really and truly lost all his marbles.
Such an emotional fic! Had a few things gone differently in the show, I feel like this is something that could have happened.
+Funniest Fic
Tree Trouble by @theladywyn
AU. Firefighter!Cordell gets a call from Liam to rescue a cat stuck in a tree. This turns out to be a slight misunderstanding.
I knew right away that this was the funniest fic I've read this year. I absolutely adore the banter between the characters!

From Watson Lake to Whitehorse (No. 4)
When the United States approached Canada again in February 1936, the Canadian government refused to commit to spending money on a road connecting the United States. The Canadians also worried about the military implications, fearing that in a war between Japan and North America, the United States would use the road to prevent Canadian neutrality. During a June 1936 visit to Canada, President Franklin D. Roosevelt told Prime Minister W. L. M. King that a highway to Alaska through Canada could be important in quickly reinforcing the American territory during a foreign crisis. Roosevelt became the first American to publicly discuss the military benefits of a highway in an August speech in Chautauqua, New York. He again mentioned the idea during King's visit to Washington in March 1937, suggesting that a $30 million highway would be helpful as part of a larger defense against Japan that would include, the Americans hoped, a larger Canadian military presence on the Pacific coast. Roosevelt remained a supporter of the highway, telling Cordell Hull in August 1937 that he wanted a road built as soon as possible. By 1938, Duff Pattullo, the BC premier, favored a route through Prince George. The U.S. offered either a $15 million interest-free loan, or to cover half the construction costs.
The December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and beginning of the Pacific Theater in World War II, coupled with Japanese threats to the west coast of North America and the Aleutian Islands, changed the priorities for both nations. On February 6, 1942, the construction of the Alaska Highway was approved by the United States Army and the project received the authorization from the U.S. Congress and Roosevelt to proceed five days later. Canada agreed to allow construction as long as the United States bore the full cost, and that the road and other facilities in Canada be turned over to Canadian authority after the war ended. It proved unimportant for the military because 99 percent of the supplies to Alaska during the war were sent by sea from San Francisco, Seattle, and Prince Rupert.

Gone Girl 4- Running Empty
Tumblr media
Author’s Note: Here we go, down the Walker hole! My beta for this is Miss Cupcake (@petitegateau991 on tumblr)
Summary: Y/n tells her story to the Ranger.
Pairing: none yet, past OMC x Reader
Word Count: 1897
Story Warnings: mentions of domestic abuse, mentions of arranged marriage, mentions of faking death, mentions of fear anxiety and ptsd, mentions of police corruption
~~~~
"Come over and talk to me. Lewis can handle the drinks." Cordell waved as he walked over to one of the tables. Y/n nodded and followed him around the bar to sit across from him. "Now, start at the beginning. What's your real name?"
"It really is Y/n. Y/n Y/l/n. I'm…" She licked her lips and cleared her throat. "I am on the run from my husband." She let out a little sigh as she clasped her hands politely in her lap. "'Start at the beginning', well that's...I really did grow up in Dallas...Highland Park, though. So, I didn't go to White High, I went to Cambridge Christian. My family became wealthy in the forties with oil money and Daddy's always been real good with investing and he...he made sure I went to the best schools. I never even saw W T White High...just heard the reputation of it. Private school, soccer scholarship to Rice that Daddy made me turn down so that I wouldn't look like I needed aid with my tuition...Daddy's priority is propriety and power. You'd think, with all the money he's got, that'd be enough influence. I mean, I've seen what a dollar can do but...it wasn’t enough for him."
She dabbed at her nose with the back of her hand before continuing. "He met Claude at a Texas RNC fundraiser. Claude needed money for his campaign. Daddy wanted someone powerful in his pocket so...he put us together. I told him I was too young to get married and he told me it was best for the family. He told me to be a good girl. He told me it was the right thing to do...and if I didn't marry the next Republican Representative from the great city of San Antonio, he was going to stop payin' my tuition and completely cut me off. He was gonna disown me.
Now, the money wasn't a big deal...but my degree and my daddy's love? I'd worked so hard for both of those things."
"So, you married him?" Walker asked, softly.
She nodded. "I didn't really have a choice. I wasn't forced, but I couldn't say 'no'." She gave off an unhappy noise and shook her head. "Twenty-one years old, married off to a man who barely knew me...for an exchange of money and power. It's like something out of some medieval storyline."
Walker had to agree. Some princess being forced to marry the king of a neighboring territory under the guise of peace or trade. It made him a bit sick to think of it happening in this day and age, in his Texas.
"Never got to finish my degree either. Claude wouldn't let me stay in Houston. Twelve credits short of a BS in Psychology and he...he said I'd never use that sh-stuff so what did it matter if I walked across that stage? Accordin' to him, I wasn't meant for anything except bein' his wife. So, I put everythin' into bein' his wife." She sniffled and dabbed at her eyes. "I was a good wife. I was always cleanin' something. I was always cookin' and bakin' for him. I didn't do anything wrong, but he always found somethin'. Ranger, nothin' was ever good enough."
"When did he start hurting you?" Walker guessed.
She gave a tight smile and looked down at her hands. "We were headin' to the pool, second day of our stay at this hotel in Maui. Second day of our honeymoon...I grabbed him the wrong towel...so he grabbed my arm and flung me to the floor...and then he acted like nothin' had happened." She scoffed and sniffled. "It's a common technique that toxic people employ. It keeps their victims on their toes...walking on eggshells and you'd think that someone who majored in Psych would have seen that and countered it, but I was so powerless. There was nothin' I could do. I tried to tell Daddy, but he wouldn't hear it. He wouldn't help me. He said it wasn't a big deal, that Claude was a man of passion and sometimes that passion would explode on me. Told me to 'suck it up', keep my mouth shut and 'be a good wife'."
"What about other support? Other family?" She shook her head solemnly. "Friends? Woman as friendly as you must have had-"
"Not since the wedding. Claude didn’t want me talkin' to folks. At all, really. He'd throw these parties and fundraisers and whatnot, and he'd remind me every time 'Seen and not heard'. He told me to be like a piece of art. I used to have friends. I used to be…" She trailed off as her eyes went unfocused. "My maid of honor died in a car crash three years ago. I didn't even know until I started tryin' to come up with an escape plan. He isolated me so completely that I had no one."
"I'm sorry."
"Thank you," she whispered before sniffling again and sitting up straight again. "I had nowhere to go, no one to hide me so...I really only had one option. There was this doctor Claude always called in when he went too far. Dr. Watkins lost his license 'cause he had an affair with a patient that blew up an' he started takin' cash work, under the table stuff for criminals. He spent his time pulling bullets out of gangsters and he...he would cringe when he walked in to take care of me. He flinched every time. So, he...he suggested faking my death. He said he could get me fake paperwork from one of his other clients to help me become somebody new and he could help me carry out the escape. I'd have to leave everything behind and never talk to anybody from my life ever again but...if I stayed with Claude, I wasn't going to have a life anymore. He was gonna kill me eventually. Broken arms and noses and teeth...eventually, it was gonna go even further. So, Dr. Watkins started takin' blood from me and I started takin' money out and hiding it in small increments. A hundred dollars here and there, that's walkin' 'round money in my old circles so he never noticed.
Took me a year, but when I had twenty thousand set away, Dr. Watkins got me in contact with this woman...she called herself Moses but obviously, that isn't her name. She, uh, runs what Dr. Watkins calls 'an underground railroad'...like for the slaves but-but for women like me. Women with no other options. Women who need to disappear. She took half of my money, got me all the paperwork I needed to become Y/n Salama...and after I got out, she gave me a place to hide for a few weeks. She had this little room in the back of her house...it didn't have any windows and the door was hidden behind a big bookcase. She kept me safe there for...a while. Longer than she would have for someone less prominent but...Claude is more than just a rich man. He's a-a manipulative man. He's a charming one. He...he has friends in every level of law enforcement, local beat cops straight to the Rangers and-"
"That's why you got worried when I mentioned my job."
She nodded. "I thought...I don’t know, that you'd tracked me down for him, or maybe that you were gonna recognize me and report back to him. You didn't seem to know me, though, so…" She ran her hand across her forehead. "I should have prepared better for questions and never should have helped you with your bruises. S'what I get for tryin' to be helpful. Never woulda caught onto me if I'd just gotten you your stupid whiskey."
"You answered the questions fine," Cordell soothed. "And it's good that I figured you out rather than someone else...and now you got a friend in the Rangers, too."
She looked up, shocked and a bit hopeful as she caught his eyes. "It's been a long time since I have had a friend. I've been so scared." She smiled a little and looked around the bar. "Seems kind of serendipitous that I got a job at the stomping ground of such an upstanding Texas Ranger."
"We'll call it 'fate'." He smiled back at her. "So, how exactly did you fake your death? I haven't heard anything about Representative Y/l/n's wife dying. According to what I've heard, you're a missing."
"He hid it. All the work I did, he hid it." She shook her head in confusion, her eyebrows scrunching together. "I made a lot of noise and I-I made a huge mess. I wanted the neighbors to hear because I never let them hear when he was hittin' me. It would be something noteworthy. So, I screamed and I threw things and I broke vases and paintings...and then I dumped the blood Dr. Watkins took from me on the rug in the great room. Five bags of it. So much that I wouldn't survive if I lost it all at once. There should have been no doubt that I was dead. But he…"
She shook her head again and scoffed angrily. "He didn't even call the cops for two days. I was sittin' in that safe room and he was...cleanin' it up. By the time he called in his cop friends and FBI friends, there wasn't a trace of blood. All that work I did...he replaced the art and the vases, cleaned the mess. I don’t understand why."
Walker licked his lips. "Is it possible that he figured out that you were alive somehow?"
Her jaw dropped. "M-maybe. He's very clever and I'm not that-" She stopped herself, glaring a bit. "That's not true. I'm smart. I got into Rice with almost perfect SATs. Don't let him-" She let out an angry huff of breath before taking a calming inhale. "He might've figured it out. It's not like I have experience faking my death. But why would he hide it?"
"If I had to hazard a guess...he's planning to find you and...ya know, finish the job."
She swallowed thickly, fear washing across her expression before she hummed. "Sounds about right. Claude would never abide me...making a mess or...takin' somethin' that belonged to him." There was silence for a minute as she stared at the table. "I don't know what to do here, Ranger Walker. I can’t let him find me and I can’t go back.
Cordell reached out and set his hand on her bicep. She flinched before looking up and catching his eyes. He had a feeling she hadn't had a kind touch in years. Her mind immediately went to the violent touches of her husband. "He isn't going to find you, Y/n. I'm not going to tell anyone about you...and I promise...I will keep you safe."
She seemed to try to hold down a sob as she nodded. "Thank you so much, Ranger."
He squeezed her shoulder reassuringly. "You're welcome. And you can stop with your daddy's propriety. Go ahead and call me 'Cordell'." She smiled a shy smile and he couldn't help but return it.
Walker's Jared Padalecki Talks Finale's Killer Threat, Why He's 'Excited and Nervous' About Cordell/Geri's Future
TVLINE | First of all, congrats on the renewal! Thank you so much! Certainly a relief. We’ve all been waiting on bated breath. So to get that vote of confidence was a huge, huge deal. And [Wednesday was] Odette Annable’s birthday. [Thursday] is Coby [Bell’s] birthday. [Kale Culley’s] birthday is this month. So they were all kind of mentioning on the cast text thread like, “Best birthday present ever!” It was very awesome to be able to share that awesome news with the gang.
TVLINE | You planted a lot of seeds for next season, so thank God you got that renewal. Which storyline are you most excited for in Season 4 coming off the finale? Well, I guess I’m a glutton for punishment. I kind of tend to have a lot of interesting storylines that deal with the character having to confront past traumas. Obviously, I did that for many, many years on Supernatural as Sam Winchester. And so, the storyline of the Jackal, of this case that went cold that really consumed Captain James and Cordell Walker many years ago, the fact that that might be reopened is very exciting. We’ve seen Captain James be a stalwart for the whole Ranger organization and for his friend Cordell. So I think it’s nice that, hopefully next season, I’ll get to return the favor and be there for him when he’s kind of having to revisit some of his past trauma. So that’s, I don’t want to say No. 1 on my list, but certainly high on my list.
I also love the bombshell of August wanting to go into the military, and Cordell not knowing how to really approach it and going, “Well, I did it. So who am I to say, ‘Don’t do it’? I’m just saying, ‘Don’t do it just yet.'”
And I’m very, very excited about the Cordell/Geri storyline and seeing where they go. They kind of gave it a preliminary shot, and that didn’t stick. But now that their lives are different and that they’ve had some time to really think about it and digest it, I think they could make a good tag-team for Stella and Auggie
TVLINE | But between the serial killer and the FBI task force, how worried should we be that work is going to get in the way of Cordell and Geri’s re-sparked romance? Or are they finally ready to give it a real try? [Laughs] I think we can rest assured that it will get in the way, and that’s going to be the exciting part to explore and play and find out alongside the writers and the audience, to see just how realistic it is for Cordell to find love again and for Geri to find love again. Obviously, we saw Hoyt come back in Episode 17 of the third season, so we know that she’s been happy with somebody. There were asterisks, obviously, with Hoyt, and I guess there are asterisks with Cordell, as well, because his job is serious and can be dangerous and can, as we’ve seen, kind of bleed into his home, his family and all that. So I’m excited and… I don’t want to say hesitant. I’m excited and nervous to explore that with the writers next season.
TVLINE | He did ask her to stay with him for the summer. So can we at least assume he’s definitely not going to accept the FBI gig? Well, it wouldn’t start until after the summer anyways. And so, he’s going to have time to think about it, and he’s going to have to kind of measure whether it’s important enough. He doesn’t want to do a Rodeo Kings thing again. He doesn’t want to get caught up in something again, and I think he’s starting to really put roots down with his family and with the people he loves. I’m, obviously, not having any conversations with the writers right now because they are on strike, and I support them very much. But as soon as we’re all back in the pool, I can’t wait to see what their thoughts are on what Walker’s decision will be.
TVLINE | We also need to talk about Walker’s other kid because that cliffhanger with Stella was quite dramatic. And it was interesting that she chose to go to Liam, not her father, for help. Do you think that will cause a rift within the family? That’s a good question. I don’t think so. It’s possible. I can understand why Walker would be upset. And maybe this is unimportant or uninteresting, but the reason it happened the way it happened is because of location issues we had. So initially, Liam was just going to be the first person she ran into, like she was just going to see him while she was figuring out who to tell. And so he was the first person [she saw], and she wasn’t able to call her dad, and so she told Liam. But also, Walker presumably didn’t really have his phone on him, he wasn’t checking it a whole lot. He was helping with bacon and eggs at the Side Step for the after party. [Laughs] I think Walker always finds himself in the position — and God, I guess, Jared has found himself in the same position as well — of August went to Bonham to talk about enlisting. Stella seemingly went to Liam to talk about the crazy situation that she and Sadie find themselves in at the end of the episode. So it might give him pause, but I think he’ll ultimately understand.
TVLINE | I wondered if maybe it had to do with the fact that he’s an authority figure, he’s part of the police so to speak, so it puts him in an ethically compromised position, as well, if she goes to him. Yeah, you know, to that end, maybe it does upset Walker. Thinking about it now, now that I know we’re going to explore it next season, Walker would certainly feel kind of bombarded. He son is coming at him, saying, “Hey, I talked to Gramps about this,” and his daughter is going to ultimately have to admit, “Hey, I talked to Liam about that.” He might find himself in a position of like, “Whoa, what am I chopped liver? This is what I deal with, keeping my family safe, keeping the people of Texas safe as best I can. So why would you not immediately call me? Why would you not come to me?” I’m sure Walker will find out very quickly what happened, and hopefully he can focus on the task at hand and not get too emotionally involved with feeling hurt.
Walker S01E11 Freedom
Cordie sweating under camera lights is so Jared coded
Cordie trying to translate teenage emoji lingo is so precious to me!!
Cordie to Hoyt: less tears, more beers 🤣
Abeline has two sons: Liam and Hoyt. If you know, you know
Stella is so blinded by love it's annoying. I wanna grab her shoulders and shake her hard while screaming at her: your boyfriend's father is planning a revenge on your father using you. Stop acting like a child!
Also, Trevor is a loser and i don't like him
ok but why did Stella think it was a good idea to drive into sunset with Trevor?
Twyla Jean! Her only crime was she thought Rodeo Kings were her family. Twyla was so interesting. Much better than Geri
what's Geri's problem? She can't be with Cordie. She can't be with Hoyt. Please, woman, sort yourself out
At least someone thought of checking Clint's visitors! Thank you, Micki!
Cordell fighting with a graze wound 😍
Gotta give it to Cordell. The man was patient with his daughter. If I were him, I'd ground her forever
Sometimes I feel Stella gaslights Cordell into trusting her. Like suddenly she wants go on trip with her dad. Part of me feels she just says things to be on his good side after enormously screwing up
Hoyt, you deserve better
Hoyt to Geri: i meant it every time I asked
