Sketchbook Experiments
I haven't been too well recently. It started with an allergic reaction (e-cigarette vapour, passively) which gradually turned into a chest infection... Manageable but annoying. But that left my immune system open to a battering from a head cold. I don't know if I perhaps accidentally and unknowingly had gluten from something I ate, but it's possible... And I felt a bit... Bleh... for a few weeks. Which meant that I didn't really do, or feel like doing much art. But recently, since I started to feel better, I found myself playing around with my sketchbooks again. My ADHD medication has been stopped for now (long, frustrating story!) and I've been finding it very difficult to concentrate on anything for more than about 90 seconds. So, in a rare moment of being able to do anything at all, I did this page in one of my sketchbooks.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/74f95b11ff5b57525e759bad070ac3ce/1425979a911b2c50-15/s540x810/58da5f842d2fb4c90bc8353791855cde2ace390a.jpg)
The roses were done by tracing and transferring the image with tracing paper and a nice, soft graphite pencil. I then used some water-soluble coloured pencils to add colour and then blended the marks with water and a paintbrush. Once that was dry, I traced and transferred images of the two portraits in the same way. The one in the top left is of Jamie Bower as Christopher Marlowe (from the TV series 'Will'), and the smaller one in the bottom right corner is from the supposed portrait of Christopher Marlowe. With a selection of fine-nibbed pens (waterproof ink), I first made a simple line drawing to outline the portraits and then used cross-hatching to add detail and texture. The effect is similar to the one you'd get with Drypoint etching. I didn't want to lose the roses behind them so I made my marks as light as possible but still getting the values from the photographs. There are not many of them in the portrait that's supposedly of Christopher Marlowe (artist unknown) so I had to add some where there technically aren't any. As for the jacket, I switched the colours so I wouldn't obliterate the rose behind it. The rose was chosen because the rose features in Marlowe's poem - The Passionate Shepherd To His Love - which is one of my favourites. The point of the piece? Well... The first portrait is of an actor playing a role (in a series that isn't particularly accurate) with the second portrait of someone who isn't Marlowe at all either. We don't know who it is - but we can say for sure that it isn't Christopher Marlowe! Neither portrayal or image is accurate - which is an idea that is kind of fascinating to me. The images were originally taken at the very start of one of my last big art projects. I was working with ideas around the theme of concepts of truth, reality and theatre. I have so many copies of these images! I have a habit of ruining them before I'm finished with them and then need more of them, so I quickly learned to print more than I could possibly need - just in case! The final page ended up a bit scratchy, but I actually like the effect, personally. I'm torn between buying a little printing press so I can actually make some small drypoint etchings. But a good fineliner pen is a reasonable substitute... for now!

I'm seeing a lot of people in the comments disparaging this remake, but I do want to go into a few reasons why it doesn't look as strong as the original.
Now of course no one is immune to nostalgia goggles and it's very easy to have that "they changed it, now it sucks!" instinctive reaction, so I am going to try to critique specific things and go into why I think they don't work as well.
First, I want to point out the composition of these two shots and specifically where the focus is.
In our original Hiccup and Toothless literally meet in the middle. With both Toothless and Hiccup pushed off the edge of the screen.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/10b63216b2f90ba70e2ded50239e0eeb/96f78c69e2084349-6c/s540x810/24aa029d732bd06262a5f6c61abeb0adeee84894.jpg)
In this version they kept Hiccup fully in scene, but look how the focus of the action is now off to the side. We aren't focusing on either character-- they're both still pushed off to the edges of the screen-- but it's no longer both of them coming together in the middle, but rather Hiccup taking up the scene with Toothless starting to invade it.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6b8927471170f2a41f1c5c9ee44aedb1/96f78c69e2084349-9a/s500x750/9b32f51e7601a73b8278db02257b0271087a6a08.jpg)
Now this bit may be a little nit-picky, but look how perfectly the curve of Hiccup's hand matches Toothless's snout in the original in a way they don't in second image. They are so close, running parallel to each other. That's a very powerful image, and the remake doesn't quite match it.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/25acc1044c759c023284e8c594d82fdb/96f78c69e2084349-53/s500x750/b7d5db1c284b93905a6d6e90981bd32b7dfd3aef.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bd68176220f04c67acf034cd7c2a5136/96f78c69e2084349-2e/s540x810/60f321f1a28b000e483220ac0c1ea96b054d9ad2.jpg)
I see a lot of people in the notes saying the lighting sucks, but no one explaining why. Looking at the bottom pic, you can see it actually has a greater value scale. There are a lot more midtones. Why is this bad? Because the action disappears into the background.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b897f14777d559e973c8b2a1b924c348/96f78c69e2084349-3c/s500x750/6ab15a59eea4f7d7c22ea84789d0bac36e6e1fb5.jpg)
In the first pic there is a clear line of action going from Hiccup's arm to Toothless. By having these the lightest areas in the shot your eye is drawn to them. Then the darkest parts are Toothless's body and Hiccup's vest and hair which make them pop from the background. The most visible part of Toothless is his eye. There's a little bit of highlight on his scales and there's lighter midtones around his body to help clarify his silhouette, but we are drawn to his eye because of the light on dark contrast.
In the lower pic there is some highlight on toothless's scales (look at all that Texture! Wowee! We sure can put our computers to good use adding in details), but why is that the part on Toothless that stands out? Why is that important? Hiccup's arm kind of disappears into the background, and I can see more detail in the background than in our main character. The light sandy beach wants to draw my eye down, but there's nothing important there.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8699b986213488471afcd58a2b32e237/96f78c69e2084349-bf/s540x810/590ae89358fb703411ecbdc24c5c680054afae20.jpg)
Now I put these in black and white to better see the contrast, but back to the color version, the background is mostly cool tones with warm light settling on our characters: another way in which the first one makes the characters stand out.
The only thing really catching my eye in the second one is that the greens are maybe too green? I'm not getting the same delineation of foreground and background.
There are a few other things to be picky about.
Like Hiccup's costume. Now I don't know enough about costumes to confidently pick it apart detail by detail (and honestly can't make out enough details to do so anyway) but what is one of Hiccup's defining traits? His scrawniness, right?
Look at that skinny little arm reaching out for that dragon. Look how that thin strip of lighter colored fabric visible from under his vest accentuates how slender his trunk is. Look how clearly you can see how he leans away from Toothless even as he reaches out for him. You can see the hesitation in his arm through his slightly bent elbow.
I feel like the bulky, loose costume on the actor makes him look bigger than he should and obscures body language.
Now here's the part where I want to remind y'all that art is subjective. These are some of my thoughts on this, but are by no means the only way view this. Also, please be nice to this kid. He got a chance to play a favorite childhood character. I'm sure he thought it was pretty cool to be given the opportunity and is trying really hard to live up to the role. None of the things I've pointed out here are his fault. Don't be a dick! Actors are people too.
I don't like that this is a thing. But I'm sure many people really tried to put in their best effort into this. Don't let your ire with Universal/DreamWorks for making a cash grab of your childhood nostalgia turn into harassment of artists and actors. I've seen that happen too frequently.
And remember: animation isn't an inferior art form, sometimes it really is the best medium to tell a story in.
httyd got live actioned. trailer just dropped and its uh. hm
idk what i was expecting but what looks like a shot-for-shot remake except with ugly ass high definition cgi that detracts from rather than enhances the cinematography really is. well it's a choice.

Pairing: Billy Hargrove X Reader
Word count: 2.3 K
Summary: You're the extreme opposite of Billy Hargrove. The good girl, with perfect grades, the child every mother wants to have. And you don't want to have nothing to do with his kind. Ignoring Billy – and his constant, lingering stare – became an habit. But after you're put together for a special school program, you'll have no choice but to get along with him. And soon enough you'll find out that Billy is so much more than just Hawkins' bad boy.

Growing Closer
You find Billy walking away from his locker, ready to go home. He's alone this time, and you heard something about Stacy being mad at him. You wonder what he did to her. Or if he just got tired and is now aiming for someone else.
“Hargrove.” You call when you're closer enough to be heard. Billy turns around immediately, and you both stop in the middle of the hall. “Do you happen to have some time? We need to discuss the calendar.”
“Sure.” He simply says, and it's clear to you he's pissed off already. He was forced into the program, so it's only normal he doesn't want to do that.
“We can hit the library. It remains open for two hours after class.” You can't help but notice some people staring. But that isn't a surprise. You and Billy are as different as day and night, and nobody expects to see you two talking.
“Sure.” He repeats, and a fun expression crosses his face before he steps aside, gesturing for you to walk.
Chuckling, you furrow your eyebrows, starting to make your way to the library.
You know the place by heart since you're here at least three times a week. Waving at the teacher who stays in the reception, you pick a table in the back, so your chattering won't bother anyone. Taking a seat, you watch as Billy settles down across from you.
It's a little weird at first, and a silence falls in between you two. You suddenly realize you've been staring at him, way too focused on his blue eyes. You didn't know Billy's eyes were so beautiful. But you quickly clear your throat, searching on your bag for your notebook.
“I made you this planner.” Pulling the paper sheet off the notebook, colorful by many different marker colors, you slide it over to him. Billy's eyes fall on it immediately, eyebrows raising. “It's just to help you keep up with everything until the end of the year. More stuff will probably be add, but don't worry, I'll let you know.”
“You have everything figured out, don't you?” He finally speaks up, holding the paper in his hands.
“I know you don't want to do this. But this is senior year and you're almost free. Just a little longer and this will be over.” Offering him a small smile, you put a strand of hair behind your ear.
“I won't repeat the year. My grades are enough to get me through.” He sounds a little angry, and you sigh.
You don't know what to say to make him cooperate if he doesn't want to. “Look, you can't get out of the Improvement Program. But you can pick another tutor. So if you want, I have a list of everyone who's still available and maybe if there's someone you already know or happen to be friends with–” As you speak, you start looking in your bag for the small blueish paper. “–you just have to talk to Mrs Martinez and–”
“I want you to be my tutor.” His voice startles you since it's a little too loud and because of the silence, it echoes a bit. “But just because I know you're the smartest person in this school.”
Biting your lip, you nod, not sure how you feel about his compliment. “Thanks... I try.”
“You freaking succeed,” Billy mutters, cupping his hands above the table.
There's heat creeping through your cheeks so you look away, bringing back to mind what else you must talk to him about. “So, the next project is a presentation on History about World War I. Our part is about the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, the invasion of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the July crisis. The happenings before the war was set.”
“Great.”
“Shhh.” Someone says, and you look at a small group of people on your left.
“You shut up, asshole.” Billy raises his voice a little, and you look at him with wide eyes.
“Hey. Don't say that.” You warn him, giving the boy an apologetic look. “We're at a library, we're supposed to be quiet.”
“Excuse me.” Mr Williams comes, standing a few feet away. “Some students are complaining about your chattering, so I'll have to ask you to leave, please.”
“Oh...” Blushing a little, you start gathering your stuff. “Sorry, Mr Williams. We'll leave.” Billy is just about to say something when you give him a look.
You're quickly outside again, fixing the strap of your bag on your shoulder. “We...” Moving out of the way of some people heading to the library, you set into his pace, walking side by side. “We'll need some time to work on everything. So we can switch between your place and mine because doing things in the library won't work.” You feel a little shy to propose this, but it's not a big deal. You'll be doing this until the end of the year, so it's quite inevitable. “If that's ok with you, of course.”
“We should hit your place then. My father is home today, so... It just won't work.” There's a change in his voice, and you glance at him.
“My mother is home too. But she won't bother us.” Walking a little faster, you gesture at your car. “Just follow me.”
Billy nods, and you smile, giving him a little wave.
The school is empty, and so are the streets around it, so you have no trouble speeding away. Keeping your eyes on the review mirror, it only takes twenty minutes to get to your house, so you park on your usual spot, stepping out of the car and waiting for Billy to do the same. When he finally joins you on the porch, you move to unlock the door.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/32b774a9a74ab7c54e35db1fb47b2121/85f149a21cd9c207-c0/s540x810/cc5c06e42498ad0637161ad29623942b6c6c5a7a.jpg)
Billy couldn't help but feel lucky to be at her place. He never thought he'd come here, under any circumstances. Trying not to let her notice, he allows his eyes to wander a little as she opens the door, taking in the place (Y/N) calls home. It has a weird feeling for him, almost as if the place is sacred, somewhere he wasn't supposed to be.
“My mother is nice. But she may say some embarring stuff so... Be prepared.” Following her inside, Billy notices as her mother looks at them, eyes going a little wide to see him. He wonders if she isn't used to her daughter bringing boys home. Knowing (Y/N), he knows she's not. “Mom, this is Billy Hargrove. I told you about him yesterday, remember? From the Improvement Program.”
She told her mother about him. So yes, she was thinking about him. Maybe just for a couple of seconds, maybe just as someone she knows, who she has told to help. But it doesn't matter. (Y/N) was thinking about him, and for now, it's enough.
“Of course.” She stands up, coming to give her daughter a quick hug and shake Billy's hand. “I'm Amanda. (Y/N)'s mother.”
“It's good to meet you, Mrs–”
“Call me Amanda kid, or else I feel terribly old.” She jokes, kindly smiling. “I believe you'll be hanging around here a lot because of school. But don't worry, I won't get in your way.”
“Thanks, mom. We'll be in the dining room.” (Y/N)'s light touch on his forearm is enough to make him shot her a glance, almost too desperate, something in him wanting to ask her why she did such a thing. Billy curses himself as he follows her to the dining room for feeling so stupid. It's just a freaking touch. On his freaking arm. And she wasn't even giving it much thought.
As Billy settles down on the table, (Y/N) moves the centerpiece to the edge so they'll have more space. “Do you want anything? Water? Or some chips? I happen to have some.”
Her voice sends Billy into some kind of stupor. A guy like him shouldn't feel this way. (Y/N) is just a girl, and he had many. But none of them ever made him feel like this. Like his heart is trying to jump off his chest. After a year, he did think he got over it. But he was wrong. Billy didn't want to be this close to (Y/N), always watching her from a safe distance. But this stupid school had to put them together, so damn close. Look at him now, seated on her dining table, staring at her like a complete idiot.
Just because she offered him water and freaking chips.
“Water is nice.” He mumbles, eyes on her back as she walks away, passing behind his chair. A sweet scent irradiates from her. Like flowers, he doesn't know which one though, like freaking sunshine.
Laughing at his stupidity, Billy looks down at his hands. How can someone smell like sunshine? It's illogical.
“Get it together, she's just a girl,” Billy says to himself, resting his back against the chair and taking his jacket off, laying on the chair next to him. Girls are nothing new to him. He had they all figured out, their ways, how to break them, how to please them, how to bend them to his will.
But not (Y/N).
A nice girl like her is immune to his tricks. And that's good because if she wasn't, it would mean she could also fall on someone's traps. Like Tommy, or Jimmy, or Jackson. The very thought of those assholes with her, touching, caressing, kissing... It disgusts him, and he's quick to push such images away.
“Did you say something?” (Y/N) asks, coming back from the kitchen and handing him a glass with cold water. Once she's close enough, he takes a deep breath, and her sweet scent almost drives him mad.
She's not a girl for you, get it together. “No.” He mumbles, taking long sips before putting the glass down. “So what now?” He sounds a little rude, so he immediately clears his throat after, eyes on (Y/N) as she takes a seat next to him on the round table instead of across from him. Billy finds it odd, but he's thankful for the proximity. This way, he can be surrounded by her candy-like scent, trying to memorize it so he could play it back later. When he's into the nightmare he calls home.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/32b774a9a74ab7c54e35db1fb47b2121/85f149a21cd9c207-c0/s540x810/cc5c06e42498ad0637161ad29623942b6c6c5a7a.jpg)
You're just about to start, History books already on the table, since you'll begin with the presentation, notebooks and papers so you can take notes, but then you look at Billy. There's a bruise on the apple of his cheek that you haven't noticed it before.
“Did you get into a fight?” You ask, leaning slightly forward to take a better look.
“What?” There's a moment of confusion on his face before it changes. “Yeah.”
“Did you win?”
“In a way.” It doesn't look like he'll say anything else.
“Well, if someone punches you, make sure to beat them up.” Smiling a little, you take the History book, opening it on chapter 7. “What exactly do you know about–”
“Are you still dating Steve?”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/32b774a9a74ab7c54e35db1fb47b2121/85f149a21cd9c207-c0/s540x810/cc5c06e42498ad0637161ad29623942b6c6c5a7a.jpg)
The question takes you by surprise, making you nervously giggle. “Why are you asking me that?”
“Just curious.” He shrugs his shoulders, tilting his head to the side. “Saw you two talking earlier today and he wouldn't be happy to know we'll be around each other a lot.”
“Steve is my friend. We dated last year but only for two months.” Avoiding Billy's eyes, you go through the book, not really paying attention to anything. You can feel his stare, and for some reason, your cheeks start heating up.
“Who broke up with who?”
Chuckling, you turn your body towards him. “Why do you want to know, Billy?” Maybe he's just trying to procrastinate. “Because if you're just trying to delay things I–”
“No, I really want to know.” He leans forward, pulling the book closer to him. “You and Harrington don't fit together, so I was surprised to see you hanging out with him last year.”
“Steve and I got pretty close when he dropped the jerk act. And we were both single so we decided to give it a try.” The only reason you're telling Billy this is because it's not a secret. Some people know and they probably didn't put any effort into keeping it hidden. “But it didn't click. We were dating but it wasn't really romantic, so...” You smile to remember it, and the memory that comes back is definitely a secret. Nancy is the only one who knows, her and Steve, obviously. But you guess it's ok to tell Billy, it's quite funny. And silly. “We... We never really kissed, you know?”
“What?” His voice startles you, and the genuine confusion on his face only makes you laugh. “You're joking.”
“I'm not, and if this gets out, I'll know it was you.” With a finger pointing at his face, you fake a threatening face. “So keep it between us or else.”
Pinching his eyebrows together, Billy seems amused. “Or else what?” His voice gets lower, as he leans closer.
“Or else I'll have no choice but to make out with Steve in front of the whole school.” In a sassy tone, you smile, biting your tongue not to laugh at his expression. Billy is... Impressed? Surprised, maybe. Something tells you he wasn't expecting this answer.
“Ew. Please don't.”
“Then don't tell anyone.” Shrugging your shoulders, you pull your feet up, crossing your legs on the chair. “Now, C'mon. World War I.”
“One more question and we get to it.” As he speaks, you feel him pulling your hand away from the notebook, forcing you to give him attention. “Why in the hell didn't you and Steve–”
“We kissed. I mean, those quick kisses, you know. Like when you say hi or goodbye. Just a peck in the lips. But that was it.”
“That was it?”
“That was it.” Giggling again, you assure him. Why is it so important to him anyway? “Now, can we start?”
You watch as Billy's eyes remain on you, burning, lingering. After a while, his lips break into a smile and he looks down at the book, shaking his head lightly. “Let's start.”

(Fluffember prompt: Name)
Day 4 of isolation on Tracy Island 2.0
"I don't care, you're coming with me," I told the love of my life, who wasn't looking very happy about it.
"Why me?" he whined, and if you've never heard John whine before, or don't actually believe he's capable of it, let me assure you that he is very capable and it's very pitiful. But I am immune (mostly) and continued to stand my ground.
"Because I can't leave you alone with them, you can't stand up for yourself and they can't be trusted."
"That's not true! I can…" he saw the look on my face as I mouthed 'mattress' and trailed off, admitting defeat. "Fine, but just the one shop."
Now, I know they say never take your husband shopping, but I honestly, TRULY thought that mine would be an exception. He's the organised one, he's the sensible one, the one that correlates all the data and sorts out all their problems.
How wrong I was.
It was actually quite pleasant to be alone for a few hours, it hadn't been that long since I'd made my less than dramatic return to the island but since the world was nowhere near normal we hadn't had that much time to ourselves lately, so I was going to take full advantage.
"What do we need to get?" he asked in that long suffering tone that all husbands adopt when faced with the prospect of a trip around a shop with their woman.
"Not that much," I assured him. I was lying.
"Show me," he ordered, knowing I was lying. Must work on my 'believe me' voice.
I lifted up the list, which unfurled itself into something roughly the length of Alan and watched as his eyes tracked its descent. I also watched the life drained out of them as he faced his doom head on.
"Really?"
I nodded, folding the list back up again. "It won't be that bad," I promised him. "It's one massive shop, we should be able to find everything there."
"Why didn't you take Virgil instead? Why must you torture me?"
"Because you're my man and it's your job, plus I want to spend some alone time with you."
"I can think of much better ways to spend alone time," he grumbled under his breath as he steered the plane towards the landing strip. I declined to comment.
***
"Now, whatever you do, don't wander off," I reminded him, looking up from the list where I had sensibly been highlighting different categories of products so we could hit the different areas in order.
I almost laughed when I saw that my poor, put-upon man was slumped against the plane, hands in his pockets, eyes downcast like he was fully expecting the grim reaper to show up any second and whisk him away from my evil clutches. Keep on dreaming, boy.
"I'm not Alan," he sniffed. "Or Scott, I don't wander off, you wander off."
"I do not!"
"You're the one that didn't tell me you were going to look at the meerkats when we went to the zoo."
"Babe, it's meerkats, you should have known I'd wander off to look at them, that's just common sense. I didn't need to say it."
He looked at me like he thought I had no idea what common sense even was. He's probably right, since I agreed to both marriage and staying on the island again.
"Come on," I held out my hand, wiggling it in invitation, "it won't be that bad."
He sighed and took my hand. "I'm going to regret this, aren't I?"
"Probably. Now, masks on, sanitiser at the ready, grab that trolly for me and let's do this thing."
***
You know how it is when you're mostly in a shopping daze and can't focus on anything but getting in and getting out as quickly as possible? Like you're so focused on the list and making sure you don't forget anything and trying to locate the actual items you need versus the ones you suddenly want and can't do without? That was me.
So it took me a few minutes to realise that I'd lost John. I don't know how it happened, I don't know when and I couldn't say in good faith that he hadn't been kidnapped by aliens, it was that kind of day.
He'd shuffled along behind me, pushing the cart into which I was throwing all manner of things that I could tell he thought were useless and unnecessary. How little he knew.
"You can put some things in too," I reminded him as I tossed a loaf of fruit bread over my shoulder towards the cart. He didn't answer. The bread landed on the floor with a soft flump.
"John?" I turned around but he was gone, the cart too.
"What the heck?" Where was he? I fumbled in my bag for my phone. Where was it? Why was I losing everything important today? I had a sudden mental image of my phone sitting on the coffee pot where I'd propped it while making breakfast, I'd been watching YouTube videos and needed both hands…
"Damn it." I didn't have my comm with me either, I only ever took that out with me when I wasn't home. Which would be now… "DAMN IT!"
In my defence, I hadn't thought that I would actually lose him. I thought he was more sensible than that.
I retraced my steps, going back down four aisles to the place I knew for certain I'd last seen him behind me, pushing the trolly like it was a protective force field against shop workers and old people that didn't know the meaning of social distancing and kept getting up in his face asking him to reach the high shelves for them.
"John?" I called, sticking my head around the corner. Nothing.
"Bugger."
Where the heck could he be?
"Jooooohhhnnnnn!" I yelled a bit louder, starting a full sweep search, marching down the center gap between the aisles and glancing down each one. Nothing.
"Excuse me, young lady."
I skidded to a halt, almost flattening an older man.
"Hi, yes?"
"Have you lost someone?"
"Yep. Lost, one gorgeous ginger dumbass, if found please return to the witch in aisle 26." The man looked at me like I was crazy, but I'm used to it.
"Oh, I thought you might be Mrs Tracy."
"No, Grandma's at home."
He gave me a funny look and I stared right back, I didn't want to be impolite and just walk away but yeah, kinda on a mission here, Grandpa.
It was then that I heard it, a voice coming over the tannoy.
"Can Mrs Tracy please come to lost property at Customer Services."
It's a little surreal to hear someone calling you when you don't expect it and it took a few moments for it to register and my brain to process the information.
The old man looked at me again, head tipped to one side.
My brain clicked over.
"Shhh…ugar! That's me! Lost husband! Thank you," I screamed over my shoulder as I hot footed it to the customer service desk.
"Hi," I gasped, slightly out of breath (it's a very large store) "you…called," I gestured up to the ceiling and circled my finger like that would make sense to anyone but me. "Tracy…" I slumped, panting.
"Oh," the lady at the desk finally lost the blank look on her face, figuring out what I meant. "He's in the lost child room."
I frowned, the what now?
I dutifully followed behind the counter and through the door marked 'employees only'.
"A customer found him standing alone in the bread aisle looking confused and lost so they alerted us."
She pushed open the door to a cheery yellow room with dancing clowns on the walls that looked like they wanted to eat my soul.
"I'm sorry, I think there's been a mistake, I haven't lost a ch-" I stopped dead, blinking to make sure I was indeed seeing this correctly.
"Where have you been?" John demanded.
He was sitting forlornly on a chair that was so small it looked like it should have belonged in a doll house. His knees were higher than his chest. Some helpful soul had given him a colouring book but he'd ignored it although he was wearing a sticker that told me that he had been a super brave boy.
"You left me!"
"I did not!"
"I turned around and you were gone! I tried to call and Scott answered!"
"My phone's at home."
"I know that now! Because you abandoned me!"
"I…I…" I splutted, not knowing what to say to that.
"May I suggest a leash next time," the woman from the counter said as I dragged him to his feet. I couldn't tell with her mask on, but I'm pretty sure she was smirking.
"Babe, you're fine, it's just a mega shop."
"It's hell."
"You're being dramatic."
"I'm never coming shopping with you again," he grumbled as I thanked the lady and towed him back into the shop.
I have no idea where he lost the trolly, neither does he. I bought him a sausage roll in the cafe to appease him, leaving him there with his phone while I shopped on my own. Some things are just not worth the hassle. But I do know that next time someone calls my name in a shop, I'll pay attention.

Hello! May I ask how you draw? I'm currently learning how to myself and would be highly interested into a step to step process by you! Like from sketch to the done thing (no color necessary)
Hello there!
I dunno how I feel about showing how I work/giving advice to someone who’s learning (and I say it as a pro artist who went through years of traditional art education) because when I do the illustrations you see here on my tumblr I BREAK THE RULES you’d learn though life drawing routine, and give in to bad habits, and my methods are rather unplanned and chaotic which makes it difficult to pinpoint significant stages. But I used my portable potato to take some photos during working on my last piece, so I’ll throw it here with a bit of an explanation of what’s going on.
Before I begin - and because you’re about to look at a mess of a WIP - I’d like to give you some general advice that generally makes life easier when you draw (again, things that I learned in traditional arts education - another artist might advise you the complete opposite, dunno!)
Work holistically. Forget them satisfying-to-look-at clips on instagram showing someone produce a hyperrealistic portrait starting from an eye, with each and every element emerging being finished before they proceed to another part. It takes a lot of talent, yes, but these are ppl redrawing a photo in a kind of a mechanical manner. Most artists don’t work this way. Especially if you’re working without a reference, or if you’re doing a life drawing - your process will be layering and changing and finding what works best to give an impression of what you’re drawing rather than reproduce the exact image, and your artwork is likely to look messy most of the time. That said: don’t start with the details. Don’t spend too much time on a particular part while neglecting others. Your goal is to keep the whole piece at the same level of ‘finished’ (even though it’s unfinished - do I make sense?) before you’re confident that everything is where it should be and proceed to the details. So sketch out the composition first. See how things fit, what’s the dynamics. You’ll save yourself from limbs sticking out from the frame, odd proportions etc etc.
Because it’s a game of relationships between different parts of the picture/scene. I ask you not to worry about finishing a single element before laying out the rest because you’ll find that said element will look different once the other part appears! For instance - you might think that the colour you picked for a character’s hair is already very dark. But once you’re done with the night sky background, you’ll find that it’s in fact too light, and doesn’t work well with the cold palette. You’ll have to revisit different parts of the image as you go to balance these relationships and make the picture work as a whole.
Give an impression of something being there without actually drawing it ‘properly’- because details are hard, mate. You’ll see that my lineart usually has hardly any, and my colouring is large unrefined stains, but the finished thing looks convincing. Like, fuck, I can never focus on how Crowley’s eyes are really shaped. So I just turn them into large glowing yellow ellipses crossed by a line, and heard no protests so far.
Don’t panic if you messed up (you probably didn’t anyway). It might turn out to be a completely unnoticeable mistake - because, remember, things work together to balance each other, so another finished off prominent element will probably drown that badly placed line that looked so visible and out of place a second ago.
It might not look good before it’s finished. I’m mostly immune to it after years of drawing, and my recent illustrations all follow a specific method (ykno, my sunset glow effects and all that) so I can kinda predict the next stage. But I do my linearts on a specially picked crap paper, I don’t bother erasing the smudged graphite, and it looks messy af until I make the background white in Photoshop. Conclusion: you might have a moment of doubt as you work through a piece, but try to break through it - I often suddenly start to like what I cursed a minute before! - and try to finish it even if it’s meant to be bad. This way, looking through your past pieces, you’ll see the progress. And trust me, I can’t even look at my art from literally three months ago. It’s normal.
Now, pics! The sketches are paler in real life, but I increased the contrast a little so you can see something.
1. Laying out the composition!
I wanted to just show them kissing, but I got carried away due to some Art Nouveau inspiration. As you might have noticed, most of my illustrations are quite self-contained (ykno - they look like a sticker on a plain background). So I wanted a tight swirl bordered by Aziraphale’s wings creating a sort of rounded, yin-yang like bubble around them. Consequently I made the whole composition revolve around their heads.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/deb59d2f697fe05cc74f6edbc82dcabc/0775f893a620c957-1d/s540x810/17f7bafdf05290bbd40603cdbf920d44ac4ae7a5.jpg)
2. Adding more details to the sketch. It’s messy af. It will be messy until I’m done. It’s fine.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5c5c58408a07472a154df3a26a544ab9/0775f893a620c957-df/s540x810/d29035f2f157ae7580b49f5d2ee977a2fbcd76d6.jpg)
3. These are the fineliners I use for the linearts! They are made by Uni-ball and come in light and dark grey. I also sometimes use the guy on the left - ‘Touch’ sign pen by Pentel, when I want more brush-like, wider strokes. I work in grey because when I scan it and do my usual boring trick with sunlight highlights - which is an Overlay mode layer in Photoshop - the highlights ‘burn out’ the lines too and make them vanish a little, and the lighting effect gets more striking. I also like to use the light grey ones to make something look pencil-y without actually using pencil, because pencil fucking smudges.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/13374e70c98e6713f34d0fa0a3149682/0775f893a620c957-f4/s540x810/091ad0fa7d7047298e15c8de5f074ab34a54edbf.jpg)
4. It smudges! So because I am right handed, I start inking from the right hand side, no matter how tempted I am to do their faces first.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7277f03ba5bfef1d01e0921cc163d7ca/0775f893a620c957-bf/s540x810/f25f80336960018f37611ba3a004983a7be4c5ed.jpg)
5. You can see the composition directions here. I made it intuitively, but ofc some ppl actually use grids etc to lay out their drawings.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/771d22e37e7fb955945173e5deed7075/0775f893a620c957-f1/s540x810/6e24914519d07a2a63d7c193bf54d6e522ae4f3e.jpg)
6. See how pale ans thin the lineart was at first? I kept adjusting it as new inked parts were appearing. It starts to look nice and consistent now!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6bf8bbbdcc647f2b06b0379ca69de5f8/0775f893a620c957-01/s500x750/287de697855d362ce22116489981fafe920e5e0d.jpg)
7. Finished lineart? There are some mistakes which I later corrected in PS. Notice that Aziraphale’s face has hardly any details on it - I tried to make the drawing suggest his expression rather than risk overdoing it.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5ed03b3a1aa476481549eff2a6a1c684/0775f893a620c957-27/s540x810/200a5e917fca5fa430708fcf1a935175a129d187.jpg)
8. Photoshop time!! You can totally do what I did here even if you don’t have a graphic tablet. I used Curves tool to enhance the lineart, then Quick Selection Tool to select the background around around my sticker-like piece and filled it white (on a new layer ofc). I keep this white layer on top of the layer order so it works as a mask as I colour. I decided I did not like the hatching shading underneath Aziraphale’s halo, so I erased it with a Stamp tool (because I wanna keep the textured grey fill my crap paper naturally gives me!). It’s done roughly but won’t be visible once the thing is coloured.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d49185ce943356055ba3e9822c06f0e6/0775f893a620c957-7e/s540x810/a91e5ca1d033232162a85465c00554cf242ff1a5.jpg)
9. And the reason why I keep the grey shade instead of easily getting rid of it by using Curves/Levels is because when I set this layer to Multiply mode and colour underneath, it gives me this nice desaturated look like from an old cheap paper comic page. It works as a natural filter! But of course I can’t do bright colours this way, so all my glowing highlights happen ABOVE the lineart layer - on a separate layer in Overlay mode!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dade2c87dc98d4f2c801e47b3327cdf9/0775f893a620c957-43/s540x810/edd3f86a6bc44f0f4220d55b2c795991b37c8cac.jpg)
Finished thing here!

“You are listening to 66.6 bzb, broadcasting from the US. Next up, our top thirty requests!”
He frowned, glancing up from his phone to Caleb’s ancient car radio and listening intently.
“30th place: Bite Me by Garlic Kisses” said a sexy voice and Archer snorted, biting down a laughter. The song started, a weird indie song he had never heard in his life.
“Kay- Kay, what’s this?”
Caleb had stopped on the side of the road to examine the map - which seemed to be giving him a lot of trouble - and when he looked up he seemed annoyed.
“What?”
“This radio- 66.6bzb...?”
“Oh, Beelzebub’s?” Caleb shrugged “I like their music.”
“No, I meant I never heard of it” Archer squinted, “What kind of radio is named Beelzebub’s anyway?”
“A station ran by creatures, obviously” Caleb shrugged and then pushed the map on Archer’s hands “Can you read this? What road are we on?”
“I-93″ Archer shrugged, confused. It was very easy to spot, he didn’t get why Caleb was fussing so much? “Is it possible for werewolves to lose eyesight when they get old, Kay? Because it seems like your boat already sailed.”
Caleb scoffed and turned on the car “Shut up, you little shit. It’s just- The letters jump a little and get all scrambled up.”
Archer raised his eyebrows "And they have always jumped around? Doesn't matter what you're reading?"
Caleb blushed, but nodded "Dex says I suffer from some condition... Dis- deesomething. It doesn't matter anyway, I don't have to read that much on my day to day life."
"You're dyslexic", Archer concluded, surprised. Something about a born werewolf with a badass immune system being dyslexic was incredibly amusing, "Is that why you were home schooled?"
Caled frowned and shook his head "Nah. I hated school when I was little and pops decided to try teaching me at home instead of sending me to class... I'm not the academic sort and he knew it. I was always happier at the farm."
Archer smiled at the unexpected fondness in his friend's voice and nodded, "you two were close."
"Like arse and pants" Caleb snorted, grinning "I'm his spitting image too. From tip to tail... Well maybe not tail, got that from mother."
"She was the werewolf? Not your dad?" Archer echoed, shocked. He knew it was sexist, but until then he had figured the wolf gene had come from Kay's paternal side.
"One hell of a werewolf, yes. She grew in an orthodox community" Caleb glanced at him for a second and meeting Arch's confused look he sighed, "Orthodox wolves are descendants from the first werewolves. They live in communities and are completely against any human interaction. Humans are food, not friends."
A chill went down Archer's spine as he imagined what his mentor was describing. A whole pack of human eating beasts.
Caleb caught his mortified glare and chuckled, "don't make that face! Humans eat other species too. Its the same thing."
"Don't equate cows to humans, Kay, that's messed up."
Kay shrugged, "sure, maybe. But you have to understand, they're not actively going out to hunt humans or anything. They just keep their interactions to a minimum. I mean after the last Hunt, its a miracle werewolves still exist and I understand them not wanting to get mixed."
“The last Hunt...?”
Caleb took a turn and frowned “God, you don’t know anything.”
“Yes, sorry, some idiot bit me in the arm and it’s been only four months” Archer bit back sassily, making Kay chuckle and shake his head.
“You should ask Dexter, I’m no history nerd. But there are hunters out there, humans who know about creatures and hunt us down. Some of them specifically hunt down werewolves and they’re damn good at their job. We used to be out in the open, but that was back in the medieval times and there was this big war and since then we keep a low profile. Our species had large numbers back then.”
Archer frowned a little at the excitement and sadness that laced Caleb’s voice. He had never seen his lycanthropy as being part of a totally different species, which had its own culture. To him it had always been a curse.
“And your mom was in one of those super secluded communities?”
“Yeah” The older man nodded, “She ran off when she was eighteen. Wanted to experience the human world-”
“Like the Little Mermaid.” Archer interrupted, only to make Caleb laugh like crazy. His whole frame shook and he nodded.
“Yeah, right- Just like that. Fell in love with a human - Peter, my father - then had me and ran away not even six months later”, he said it with such indifference that Archer took a second to understand what he heard.
“Oh... I’m sorry...”
“It’s alright. Motherhood isn’t for everyone and well- Human motherhood even less. Orthodox wolves raise their children in a communal manner. Childbirth isn’t torture like for humans, because they do it in wolf form... I guess she just freaked out.”
“But you’ve talked with her since” Archer pointed out, trying to change to a less heavy subject and trying not to hang too much on the idea of giving birth in wolf form. He shuddered at the thought.
“Oh yeah, we reconnected after my dad passed. She helped me sort the bills of the farm, pops was awful with taxes, shit got dire. I got a loan with her old community- She had left them again and was married to this werewolf guy, Eames. Had a little girl, Luce.”
“Your sister.”
“Yeah... Anyway, enough about me”, Caeb shrugged, as if he was getting out of a trance, “What about you, kid? Never mentioned your folks.”
Archer squirmed uncomfortably and shrugged “There’s no much to mention, they were dicks."

Monkey pox shot experience
The monkey pox shot process is so "subtly" homophobic. I told the technicians 4 times I worked third party in a medical setting with a lot of positive cases and still got asked multiple times if I slept with men or had HIV.
I'm telling you why I'm here, it's one of the many reasons to get the shot aside from "I'm human and I come into contact with humans" and you're still asking if I'm gay.
Do not tell them you're gay. It's building a demographic and there's no promise they aren't making a database of all the openly gay men (queer people, they don't care if you're gay, bi, or pan, they only care that you're a man sleeping with men) getting the shot. The only place to get the shot was in the two cities in my state with the highest queer population. It was a 2 hour excursion for a maximum 20 minutes in that city.
I'd be very hesitant to tell them you have friends or family that tested positive for monkey pox. I'd be very hesitant to tell them you're getting the shot because you sleep with men. I'd be very hesitant to tell them anything other than the fact that you are concerned for public safety and want to do your part.
That being said. Please get the shot if you can, there's a warning for certain autoimmune disorders or people allergic to chicken proteins or egg, or if you've gotten the smallpox vaccine. The paperwork says to specify if you have an autoimmune disorder and lists a few but the staff only asks about HIV.
It's two shots. The second one is two months or more after the first one and you aren't completely immune until 2 weeks after the second shot and if you get monkey pox between the first shot and the second one, iirc, you might not be able to get the second shot.
My injection was a dermal injection as opposed to an IM injection and it itches a little and sometimes it's tender like it's bruised. It swelled up (kind of like a bad mosquito bite reaction for me) and they told me not to touch or scratch it or clean it with anything for a bit. It's been a few days and it's still visibly irritated.
I haven't experienced any of the potential listed side effects aside from minor itching, redness, and some tenderness. I took some Benadryl on the second day and used a tiny dab of cortisone yesterday for the itching and that helped a little.

I hope the image description was suitable, I've never done that before.
