One of our friends describes how we write Maki and Kina as being "50s housewife vibes" and sometimes we write something and like. Yeah. Yeah, that's 50s housewife vibes.

Some very general buggy headcanons for Bug Fables, focusing on the Main Three and the Explorers Association. Spoilers for the game.

Kabbu: (Rainbow Scarab Beetle)

- being a dung beetle (despite the name he's perfectly happy with mushrooms and leaves and everything else, he's actually quite diverse in his diet), he is very good at digging. He actually really likes digging too! Take a little dirt nap

- related to the previous, he loves being COMPRESSED. To mimic the feeling of layers of soil, he'll pile on blankets and pillows until he's satisfied. (During cuddle sessions he is at the very bottom of the pile)

- when it gets cold, his tunneling instinct increases ever so slightly. Not enough for him to start acting different, but he tends to hoard blankets.

Vi:

Leif (Technically a Fungus running on moth hardware, but sometimes old habits die hard lmao), Mothiva, and Yin:

- Bees don't need to 'dance' in order to communicate anymore, but Vi still uses a lot of hand gestures and moves a lot when talking, especially if she's frustrated or feels like she's not communicating well enough. If you bring attention to this, she will get mad.

- When cold, Vi will try to huddle up to bugs nearby. Typically Kabbu, but she's also done it to Maki, Zasp, Celia, and Stratos. (Leif is very jealous of this, but he's already cold, so-)

- they groom their ruffs, wings, and antennae frequently. For starters, this acts as a grounding experience that calms them down, and secondly no one likes having dirt on them. Yin isn't super good at it because she's so young, but she's getting better. Mothiva uses specialized powders and perfumes while doing it, but Leif does it the 'old fashioned way', aka with his spit, lol. Mothiva nearly fainted when she first saw him doing this.

- bright lights (especially artificial ones) can really mess up with their internal clock and GPS. I'd imagine Leif and Mothiva getting really really really lost in the Termite Kingdom and Bee Kingdom because of this.

Maki and Kina:

- they both have amazing reflexes, and they can go from a standstill to moving very quickly in what seems to be an instant

- they will track quick movement instinctually, especially from smaller bugs and critters. Most bugs assume this just shows how observant and skilled they are, when really it's a hunting trait. The two actually find it very embarrassing to suddenly interrupt a conversation when they see something move very quickly out of the corner of their eye and NEED to turn their head to see what it was.

Zasp: (I know the game says he's a potter wasp, but for my writing he's a paper wasp. He doesn't know this though, and assumes he is a potter wasp)

- when anxious, he will grind his mandibles against one another. It almost looks like he's chewing on nothing, and it would kinda be like chewing your lip or grinding your teeth. Chewing on things also helps.

- loves sleeping in little nest-like formations with blankets and pillows. He'd gather up all the bedding material, form a little "wall" with them, and climb in the middle to sleep.

Celia, Gen, and Eri:

- The three of them still use their antennae to help with direction, location, and general senses. This can lead to issues; Gen and Eri have accidentally followed each other for hours (cough cough ant spiral) and Celia, having a broken antennae, is terrible with directions. (If blindfolded, Celia will slowly go in circles)

- Ant Strength baby!!! The three of them are surprisingly strong, and can carry really heavy stuff! To compensate, they're a bit frail (it's why Celia has a shield, and why Gen and Eri rarely get into actual fights).

Levi:

- My man fucking loves Aphid Eggs. Due to the tension between the Ant Kingdom and Ladybugs, he actually doesn't like buying them in public. He usually settles for mushrooms.

- his blood is actually toxic, (something Delilah learned the hard way during a spar) and is sort of a 'last resort' defensive maneuver. If a target can get over being covered in blood, they definitely can't deal with the toxins.

Stratos: (I believe he's a Hercules Beetle)

- He's a technically nocturnal, so he's a little groggy during the day. To others it looks like he's being lazy, when really he's just tired and a little out of it. During the night is when he really shines as a fighter and explorer

- he can dig like Kabbu, but isn't very vocal nor enthusiastic about it. Stratos prefers a shallow little ditch to lay in, which is something he might do if he's really really tired.

Delilah:

- She only actually drinks blood during fights as an attack, or if she's seriously injured and needs a pick-me-up (Stratos will usually step up to the plate for that). She's totally fine with nectar and plant juices and berry juices otherwise. Delilah is aware of the stereotype, and she just kinda rolls her eyes at it.

- Delilah can actually fly like Vi or Zasp. But she prefers to keep this information to herself, as she's worried it'll have people ask her to do more work.

Rewatching Magi and I have a thing about women's representation and I'm going through the tests right now and checking off the ones that Magi passes

Bechdel Test (Do 2 or more women have a conversation that's not about men): ✅ - Layla and Sasha and Morgiana all have conversations with each other not revolving around men - Morgiana talking to that one little girl and assuring her that she was going to save them from becoming slave - Etc I realize this is not a lot, this is just from the anime there's probably more in the manga but I don't remember, I mostly blame it on the fact that there just aren't as many female characters 😅

Sexy Lamp Test (Could a female character be replaced with a sexy lamp and the story be fairly unchanged): ✅ (passes bc it fails) - Morgiana plays several extremely important roles and the main characters wouldn't be where they are without her - Arba being one of the main villains in the story that impacts many other character's lives - Hakuei being our first introduction to full-body djinn equips - Scheherazade giving up her life in order to help the main characters defeat the medium in Magnostadt - Sheba creating and being able to save Aladdin during the destruction of Alma Torran - Etc

Tauriel Test (Is a female character good at her job): ✅ - Hakuei being a general and successfully uniting the Kouga clan with the Kou Empire - Kougyoku being Empress and uniting the Kou, Leam, and Kina kingdoms as well as generally being a successful ruler of a large country - Meyers being able to teach a class to be successful magicians - Scheherazade leading an entire Empire into being one of the biggest superpowers in the world - Yamraiha being an incredibly skilled magician capable of inventing magical items to store magoi -Etc

There's other tests but those are the main ones. Well-written women in media are so important and I'm really proud of Magi for being able to pass these tests multiple times, Ohtaka really writes some amazing girls :)

The Dragon King

Jaune licked his lips as Rouge pulled out the the salmon from the oven. He, Saphron, Verte, Noir, Blanc and their parents, Lucien and Grace hummed delightfully as the rich aroma danced on their nostrils.

Rouge: *grabs a large knife and fork* Alright everyone, let's dig in. *carves the salmon*

The Arc Family devoured their breakfast swifty, leaving behind clean plates. Rouge's eyes were wide in shock and embarrasment.

Rouge: Animals... my family are complete animals...

Lucien: Sorry about that, sweetheart. *wipes his mouth* We just love your cooking so much.

Blanc/Noir: Yeah!

Rouge: Just behave yourselves at the Christmas Banquet today.

Jaune: Don't worry, big sister. You won't hear a peep out of us. We'll be as good as gold.

Verte: Dibs on the last salmon! *goes to grab it*

Saphron: No way! It's mine!

Jaune: Give it here!

Blanc: No fair, I want it!

Noir: Shut up and give it to me!

[Kingdom of Vale- Vale Castle Courtyard]

The Arc Family arrived in the Vale Courtyard and saw that everyone was playing in the snow, even the knights. Noir and Blanc raced towards the commotion and hastily made their snowballs to join in. The older siblings chuckled in amusement, with Jaune fighting the urge to join in.

Saphron: Go ahead, Jaune. *smiles*

Jaune: Yes! *runs up and get hits by snowball* Ow! Blanc!

Blanc: It wasn't me! Noir did it!

Noir: Did not!

Blanc: Did too!

Jaune: I know a way to settle this. *grabs snowballs* Run for cover!

Everyone cheered and laughed as they pelted each other with snowballs. Rouge, meanwhile, tried to hide. She didn't want to get her new dress wet. Once the fight was over, the people were invited inside for a lavish Christmas Banquet. The tables were laid out with some of the most exquiste spreads; roast beef, roast pork, roast chicken, roast turkey, roast goose, roast pheasant, sausages, bacon, mashed potatoes, leek and potato stew, carrot and parsnip soup, caramalised onions, grilled fish, potato croquettes, a cheeseboard, cherry pies, mince pies, stollen, strudels, crepéa and figgy pudding. Jaune couldn't believe his eyes. All of this was ready to be feasted on by knights and peasants alike. As everyone enjoyed their meals heartily, the King, George Draco, sat beside his advisor, the mage Ozma.

Ozma: *leans in* Your Majesty, now that everyone is here, I believe it is time to make the announcement.

George: *nods head and rises* Attention, everyone.

The guests all turned to the King at once.

George: Welcome one and all to this joyous occassion. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas. I am grateful to receive the wonderful gifts that you have left me and my loyal knights. But now, I have a gift for you. *raises arms* This very castle.

The crowd murmered to each other in surprise. King George was often referred to as "The Generous One", but to give away his entire castle sounded too much. Even Jaune's family was confused by this arrangement. King George smiled and raised his hand to calm the audience.

George: Let me explain. For 20 years, I have ruled this land and I have watched Vale blossom from a rough and frail land into a wonderful kingdom. But as a mortal, my life is finite. Eventually, I will no longer walk among you and, as I have no heir, you will be left without a ruler.

Ozma: *walks to the center* In the centre of the courtyard stands a relic from the Conjunction of the Spheres; a sword known as Caliburn. It is lunged within a stone and, whomever is worthy, shall inherit the Kingdom of Vale.

Jaune couldn't believe his ears. Inheriting a kingdom just for pulling a out a sword? He couldn't help but smile at the ludicrousy of it all. The guests, meanwhile, chatted amongst themselves in a mix of excitement and concern. Magic wasn't trusted, some outright feared it and to let magic decide the fate of Vale was rather dangerous. But the alternative could power a struggle and eventually a civil war. No one should have to fight their own brothers and sisters for a throne. After the feast, everyone gathered outside to gaze at the sword in the stone. It was a gleaming, silver blade with a silver crossguard modelled after dragon wings, dark blue handle and a sapphire embedded into the pommel. One by one, several people stepped up to face the challenge of Ozma, from peasants to barons, lords, ladies and even the knights. But none could do so much as move it, let alone pull it out. Jaune felt his tunic being dragged by his brothers as they pulled him towards the altar.

Jaune: Wha- hey! What are you two doing?

Blanc: Come on, big brother! You have a go!

Noir: Yeah, you can do it!

Jaune: Hehe, boys, no one else could do this. I don't think-

Blanc/Noir: Pleeeeeeease??

Jaune: *chuckles* Alright, alright.

Jaune grabbed the handle with both of his hands and took a deep breath. He placed his foot on the stone and pulled as hard as he could. Just like the others, however, he top struggled and his face turned red from the straining. In the end, he gave up and returned to his family.

Blanc: Awww.

Noir: Unlucky.

Jaune: It's okay, boys. *chuckles* At least I tried.

It didn't seem like anyone would be able to lift the sword out after all and people were starting to grow weary. At the sky became dark, the courtyard shrank as many of the guests had decided to go home. One young, blue-haired boy, however, stared at the sword with intrigue. He walked up to it and grabbed a hold of the handle. Suddenly, the sapphire started to glow and, with gentle force, the boy pulled it out effortlessly. Everyone's eyes nearly popped from their sockets. This young boy, who seemed to have gone unnoticed throughout the day, had successfully won the Kingdom of Vale. The boy stood back, bewildered at the sight of everyone bowing down, including the Arc Family and the King himself. Ozma stepped forward and smiled.

Blue-haired boy: W-What's going on?

Ozma: You are next in line to rule as King. We have finally found an heir! *bows down* All hail, Prince Arthur Azure!

Known places in Magi and what they’re based on because I have no life and I’m bored as fuck

Aktia: No official basis is given for this country but Sinbad does state it’s known for it’s pearls so possibly it could be Bahrain, an island country in the Persian Gulf, which is famous for its pearling industry

Artemyra: Ancient Greece. The clothing and jewellery is the biggest giveaway but this is also a kingdom known for its warrior women, like the amazonians, and the word “Artemyra” itself probably comes from “Artemis”

Balbadd: India and the one I’ve talked about the most. Everything in Balbadd from the architecture to the attire to the trade and fishing is based on India’s culture and Balbadd in canon is noted for being a very imported trade area and for being unique in how multicultural it is

Heliohapt: Probably the most obvious of the series outside of Reim, this is Ancient Egypt. There’s absolutely no way you could mistake this for anything else they literally have a big ass pyramid with an eye of horus on it lmao

Imuchakk: While it’s never been officially stated, comparisons have been made between the Imuchakk and Shaman King’s portrayal of the Ainu, from the naming schemes to the clothing and affiliation to the cold

Kina: Ancient Japan. It’s located to the east of Kou, their current king is called Yamato Takeruhiko, who has a tattoo of an oni on his back, uses a katana, wears japanese armour etc

Kou: Imperial China! The royal family of Kou is literally called the Imperial Family, the naming schemes are all Chinese, absolutely everything about this place screams China if I tried to list everything we’d be here forever

Magnostadt: Unknown. Magnostadt’s name is a combination of latin (magnus) and german (stadt) but previously the kingdom was called Musta’sim, which is arabic. The term “goi” is also used for people who are non-magicians which is, ya know, very obviously meant to be the jewish “goy” [and yes in the actual magnostadt arc this is INCREDIBLY problematic given the villain of the arc is designed to have a big nose and warts all over his face etc but we won’t get into that] so it’s. Ehhhh kinda hard to pinpoint this one. It’s a mishmash of things

Parthevia: Ancient Persia! The name of this country comes from the persian “parthava” which means “parthian” as in “Parthian Empire.” This is where Sinbad, Ja’far and Drakon are from

Reim: Rome. This place is literally introduced as having a huge coliseum and being known for its gladiators, and their founder was Remus. Can’t get more obvious than that

Sasan: This is another weird one because while most of the citizens have Greek names [Spartos, Darius etc] the place itself is based on the Sasanian Empire, which was the longest lived persian-imperial dynasty, and the empire itself was named after the House of Sasan. I genuinely had to look this one up because I thought for sure it was straight Greece based on the names but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sindria: Indian Subcontinent and various others. This place is incredibly multicultural but in short: sindria derives from the sanskrit “sindhu” which is a name for the indus river, physically the country looks like the greek island of Nisyros, the palace of Sindria is loosely based on the Süleymaniye Mosque in Turkey and they have a festival called Mahrajan after King Mahrajan, a character in Sinbad the Sailor from 1001 Nights

Murr: Ahaha! Your sugar got eaten!!

Shino: No. Great job, Mithra. 

Akira What? 

Arthur: That’s right. See Luka? He ate one and he’s fine. 

Luka: …

Luka shrank back and lowered her eyes at the sudden attention. She didn’t look scared, but confused. 

Akira: Luka... Can I have one too? 

Large lilac eyes blinked twice as I gently picked up the sugar that Rutile remade and bring it to my mouth. 

Akira: ...Yes, it's delicious. Rutile sugar has a gentle taste. 

Rutile: Is that so? I'm happy to hear it. 

Once Luka saw this, she timidly picked at the sugar, and with slightly trembling hands, brought it to her mouth. 

I could hear the cute sound of sugar rolling in her little mouth. 

Luka: …! 

It’s delicious... 

Immediately, Luka’s expression softened and,like a flower blossoming suddenly, the air around her became soft. 

Aslan: Luka… 

Rutile: So you liked it! Luka, I'm so happy to see you smile. Your smile is probably better than sweet sugar: I think it has the power to cheer someone up! 

Arthur: Indeed. And isn’t her complexion looking a little better? 

Heathcliff: I think so. She’s not so pale anymore… I’m glad everything worked out.

Oz: What is going on here? 

Arthur: Lord Oz! 

Luka: …! 

Luka gasped and ran off, her silver hair swaying as she left. 

Akira: Luka! 

Aslan: ...I apologize on her behalf!. 

Aslan bowed his head slightly, and followed after Luka. 

Murr: Huh? Even though she seemed to like Sugar. I guess Oz's face was too scary!

Shino: In any case, what should we do? There's a sea of ​​sugar all over the floor.

Shylock: I would like to introduce you to the comfortable world of drunkenness. Though, I don't imagine you to be the type who gets drunk on alcohol. 

Bradley: You certainly have an interesting hobby. Fine, I'll go out with you. *

Clearing his throat, Bradley grinned and tipped his glass.  

At the end of the counter, where a light drinking competition had begun, Faust sat at the bar. 

Faust: However, I had no idea that Luca Carol was such a young witch. 

Rustica: I was quite surprised as well. But I'm sure there is a mysterious world that can only be reflected through pure eyes. 

I hear that young children are particularly sensitive to such things. 

Akira: Snow and White also said that childhood is the time when most people, whether humans or wizards, have special powers unconditionally. 

I've heard stories like that back in my world as well.

Owen: No matter how weak she is, she's still a witch. What is there to struggle with?

Akira: Owen… 

Owen, who was sitting on the sofa, leaned heavily against the backrest, arching his body. 

He turned his head in my direction and continued speaking.  

Owen: Even if a Wizard is abandoned, they can live on their own. 

It’d be fine to just wield that special power to keep others away or make them fear you.

Not many people talk about her so I don't really have a idea beyond just her sprite

Yes, we can! This leans on personal HCs a bit, so we will note - we are not 100% canon compliant. More specifically, we add claws back onto mantids and we tend to have bug size differences be slightly more pronounced rather than having everyone be People Sized. We'll run through.. notable features?

1. Describe your OC physically- what do they look like? What notable features do they have, or what’s your favorite part of their design?

Large mantis. Very large mantis, in fact. The pink tends to take second fiddle to size, since being a member just about the biggest species of mantis in the Ant Kingdom (Tenodera sinensis, or the Chinese Mantis), Kina's big enough for it to be notable, even if stunting from lack of food means she's a good bit smaller than an average mantis of her species, but the second thing a bug would notice would probably be the pink.

And she is pink. A salmon-y pink, but still... pink, which is a color that's not out of the range of what people expect, what with orchid mantises being a thing, but it's still notable simply because of the mantis it's attached to.

She's tall by bug standards and pretty damn well-built, she's got runner's muscle from spending her time darting across half the kingdom, but genetics mean that she tends towards more bulky muscle more than she does the sort of sleek "runner's physique" people usually associate with that. Translated to human looks, she'd have a mild version of the sort of "movie star six-pack" that gets seen as a Beauty Ideal, as her baseline is "underfed and mildly to moderately dehydrated while doing very physical work".

She's got fairly well-cared-for claws, along with a set of purple daggers she generally has sheathed on the insides of her raptorial claws in such a way that she can "flick" them out to be combar-ready at a moment's notice. Her bandanna is a gift from Maki back when they were just starting out as explorers, but the knife setup came later. Her primary eyes are purple, but she uses her simple eyes more most of the time. Squints enough that you can't really see the color most of the time. She's got a wide, wide assortment of scars and scratches on her shell, mostly from Explorer's Association jobs, but the specifics of those vary from fic to fic - our current most consistent one would be a series of grooves cut into the inner sides of her claws from when she was still getting the hang of flicking her daggers out of their sheathes.

In less words: Large, scarred, buff pink chinese mantis with daggers strapped to the insides of her claws and a bandanna tied around her neck, generally in some state of agitation or another.

Yin was walking around the Ant Kingdom Plaza, her expression almost blank but her gaze drifting all around Residential Area. She looked at the many Bugs there, and their houses, but her sight was never on any of them for very long...

Meanwhile, Kina was running all around the plaza herself, swearing up a storm as she failed to find Yin anywhere. 

Kina: YIN! YIN! Gods fucking damn it, where the hell did that little shit go!? If Maki finds out I lost her after he specifically...huh?

Kina found the little Moth: she was conversing with another (and even smaller) Moth, Tod, right outside his house.

Yin:...What’s your name?

Tod: I’m Tod! What’s yours?

Yin: Yin.

Tod: Nice name!

Yin: Thank you. Are you my brother?

Tod just looked at her silently for a moment and lightly chuckled when he finally did answer.

Tod: What?

Yin was going to continue asking questions but Kina quickly grabbed her arm and started pulling her away.

Kina: Dammit, Yin, I thought you fell in a ditch or something! Get over here...

Yin: Okie-dokie! 

Yin looked back and waved to Tod as Kina dragged her off.

Yin: Bye, Tod!

Tod waved back with a smile

Tod: See ya!

Kina dragged Yin back to the home that they and Maki shared, fully intent on chewing the adopted Moth out.

Kina: What the hell were you thinking!? What if you got kidnapped!?

Yin: I-I’m sorry...

Kina: That doesn’t answer my question, Yin, why were you walking around the Plaza???

Yin rubbed her arm and looked away, taking her time before answering.

Yin:..I wanna find someone like me.

Kina looked at her blankly now, the anger in her face and voice replaced with a much calmer sense of confusion.

Kina: Huh?

Yin: I dunno, I...wanna see a Bug that’s like me.

Kina: Is...that why you talked to that Moth?

Yin: Maybe.

Kina groaned in frustration and shook her head.

Kina:...Do you think that kid’s your brother?

Yin: Not really. He’s a Moth and I’m a Moth but...he’s not really like me?

Kina: What do you think it takes to be “like you”, then? You’re a Moth, aren’t you?

Yin: Yeah, but...I’m a weird Moth.

Kina sighed again and began reciting something Maki told her to say when Yin was feeling self-conscious.

Kina: “Yin, you’re not dumb or weird or stupid or ugly, you’re a perfect, special Bug and you-”

Yin: But other Moths aren’t like me.

Kina: So? Other Mantises aren’t like me but I don’t whine about it.

Yin: Other mantises are kinda like you

Kina: What, are you saying I’m not special?

Yin: No, no, you are! It’s just...I mean, you and Maki are like each other.

Kina: Yeah, we’re family. What, is family not good enough for you?

Yin: I...I...uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Yin held her arms to her head and just sat whining like that for a couple minutes. Kina stared at her in annoyance at first...before she took a few minutes to really think about what Yin was saying. Kina felt she should say or do something to help Yin (though if you ask her she’ll say it was just to shut the little Moth up), so she gave it some thought before placing a hand on Yin’s back.

Kina: You want...other Bugs, that are more like you, right?

Yin just looked at Kina and slowly nodded.

Kina: You’d like Bugs that are like family to you, right?

Yin nodded again, her face drooping a little.

Kina: You...you would rather have a family that you came from, rather than one that picked you up, right?

Yin: No, I...just...I’m sorry...

Yin was surprised when Kina pulled her into a hug, patting her on the head with one hand and tussling her fluff with the other.

Kina: Hey, hey, quit apologizing: everyone sticks out somewhere, it’s fine.

Kina leaned a little closer to Yin but couldn’t help giggling just a little.

Kina: [Don’t tell Maki I said this but he’s sorta lousy. Sorry for-]

Yin: No, you and Maki are super good!

...Yin just called Kina “super good”...

Kina:...Are you happy with us as your family?

Yin: Yeah!

Kina:...Would you be happier if-

Yin: I want you to be Maki and Kina, nothing else!

Kina couldn’t help but feel guilty then, and tried her best not to start tearing up.

Kina:...You still upset, though?

Yin’s smile faded and she looked away again.

Yin:...Maybe a little...

Kina: Nah, it’s okay, I’ll help you out...

Suddenly, Yin hugged Kina with the biggest, sweetest smile on her face, and Kina couldn’t help but smile also.

Kina:...Hey, Yin...You know Leif, from Team Snakemouth?

Yin: Hm?

Kina: He could probably help you a bit.

Yin: Ooh, maybe!

Kina: Yeah, he’s a cool dude! He’s a fun guy! C’mon, let’s head over!

Kina and Yin started walking to Team Snakemouth’s house, a content look on both of them as they strolled happily together.
