#QueerYourYear prompt 44: A book published by Arsenal Pulp Press
I’m not super familiar with Arsenal Pulp Press’s catalogue, so I picked up Kimiko Does Cancer by Kimiko Tobimatsu and Keet Geniza largely because it was available at my local library and I enjoy works of graphic nonfiction. Written by Tobimatsu and illustrated by Geniza, it’s a memoir charting Kimiko’s experience with breast cancer after being diagnosed at age 25.
Medical memoirs aren’t an area I’ve particularly read in and I genuinely think the last cancer-focused work I read might have been The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (now THAT’S a throwback), so I came into this memoir without a ton of background in cancer narratives. Kimiko Does Cancer follows the author’s experience through her initial diagnosis, treatment, and the aftermath as she negotiates how cancer has altered her body and interpersonal relationships.
Tobimatsu intentionally sets her memoir apart from other cancer stories and their relentless focus on positivity and healing. Instead, she’s candid about the toll that treatment took on her body and her relationships, especially the side effects she’s left dealing with even after her treatment ends. Tobimatsu, who is also a masculine-present Japanese Canadian lesbian, also didn’t see herself in mainstream cancer stories and found herself alienated as a queer, mixed-race person navigating her diagnosis, doctors’s assumptions, and cancer support groups. Geniza’s art is a good match to the story, the muted color palate palate and expressive figures that compliment Tobimatsu’s writing.
Kimiko Does Cancer is quite a short graphic memoir (106 pages), but it packs a lot into those pages, as Tobimatsu is frank and reflective on her experience with cancer. While I likely wouldn’t have picked this graphic memoir up without QYY to encourage me, I found it a thoughtful and worthwhile read.

Graphic memoir
Explores the author's experiences after being diagnosed with breast cancer at at 25
Pushes back against popular cancer narratives of toxic positivity by frankly exploring the impact it had on her body and relationships
Also discusses her experience as a Japanese Canadian, masculine-presenting lesbian seeking treatment and support
Candid and thoughtful

theres some things that annoy me about the writing in the boys (2019-) but one thing that RLY peeves me is how the characters in the show swear up and down that injecting adults with V (the proper V) always turns out bad and then in the show it never does. everyone's FINE. kimiko is fine when she re-takes it, butcher doesn't explode when he takes it (has side-effects but related to the temp v cancer), zoe is not an adult but she also survives and becomes a supe, hughie's dad would've probably been fine were it not for the fact he was brain dead in the moment of injection.. it feels like there's no actual risk to taking V so im glad that ashley's fate seems to hint at some SERIOUS v-related side effects

being annoying about the s4 trailer part 2
but with spoilers--
Tumblr media
lowkey feel that the Sunhee cancer thing its for Butcher's between the spoilers and this scene
Tumblr media
i have no doubt in my mind his cancer will gain superpowers....
Tumblr media
i also feel like we will hear about the cheating of Becca during a conversation with him and Joe, I don't think Hughie will be the one to learn the truth if I'm a 100% honest and if he does he might actually chastisize him for it, I also can't tell if Joe its FBI/CIA or a Lawyer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back to Kimiko and Zoe fighting I guess that's how they tried getting Neuman to talk with the boys for a deal and it all went terribly bad for them, there's also this little tidbit of why would Homelander tried to kill Neuman and she looks for help from Stan and why would she do that? I think she will try to manipulate Homelander in the one way that almost guarantee to fuck the lives of any woman who touches him... unless that's Ryan in a school uniform in that second pic...
Tumblr media
I literally have no idea whose blood this might be... perhaps the riot grows out of control and Homelander finally gets to laser everybody he likes for once...
alternatively... and that's just me... but what if this is the aftermath of him fighting Carnage/Venom Butcher and my boy is just so glad that him and Butcher will be able to keep fighting as equal... plsu the blood looks so much stickier than usual comapare to other homelander covered in blood scenes(... but my eyes might just be fucking with me as I'm fairly blind y'all should see how thick my glasses are)
Tumblr media
i genuinely think he will give Compound V to Butcher bcuz I still believe Butcher wouldn't do it to himself V24 was different it was just a taste of it but Homie doing it to him... well even his own mind had him giving him feedback on the matter in the shape of Homelander
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh altho he could be getting the V from this Jitter Bean smuggling operation incase it's not for cocaine... frenchie and kimiko finds some V and give it to Butcher... altho if y'all wanted to infect society with a deadly supe virus maybe poisoning a very popular chain of coffee's beans might be an easy way to infect the population, likewe got a Jitter Bean cafe in Godolkin, maybe there's one in Vought's tower too.

thoughts on The Boys season 4
Episode 4:
Okay so I assume Project Odessa is important
Oh, it’s just Homelander with a cake
I see, he doesn’t use his real name
He’s gonna kill them all, isn’t he
Oh no, is the cake poisoned
aw fuck what is inside Butcher
Ghost Becca again!
Hughie needs a hug
oh my god
How dare, Marie and the others are heroes
How did Annie just get in there?
Hell yeah, Annie
I’m so glad there’s a healthy M/M relationship on this show, it’s nice to see
oh shit never mind
cover your ankles, Frenchie
That’s not good
God I love Sage, I support women’s wrongs
fuck you, Firecracker
I don’t think calling them “patriots” would fly in new york
You should just tell them
Oh fuck, that guy, I forgot he was alive
Homelander what are you doing
Is he trying to make the point that they don’t remember anything they did to him
Fucking hell
aaaah hey Hughie and Kimiko!
Good question
oh no is someone going to take one of them out
He has a point
And this is the first time he’s told anyone?
wait who’s the sniper
Or snipers I guess
Love Kimiko using the notes app
I’m obsessed with her using office supplies as weapons
Very true
That’s a good question
Of course it was in Florida
Feels accurate
Uh-oh
Okay fuck this guy
Firecracker is full of shit
Oh no so everyone’s gonna hate her now
Of course it has a Confederate flag on it
A-Train get out of there
Surprised Homelander has his own place
Oh wait it is probably just in Vought tower
So I guess they have a deal
He became Homelander at 16?
Goddamn
Now Hughie’s covered in blood
Good, Kimiko’s just fine
This is her friend?
oh no, she was a bully too
is that a bedazzled gun
noooooooo
how did she even get those
oh yeah, get out of there
hell yeah!
So that was what he was planning on
Uh-oh
At least take out the cameras first
Billy what did you do
That’s just what he does
Goddamn, again
But he was nothing but a failed experiment, right?
Oh good, he tells him
again, healthy communication, here for it
even if it leads to things like this
Flavortown!
oh they’re gonna show that
Oh she gets off from that?
Girl you’re the vice president
Awww nice
Okay there’s our healthy relationship
Everyone hates Annie now I guess
Oh no
Oh shit it mutated his cancer
Hughie what are you going to do
Oh he did it?
Damn Homelander what did you do
Looks like the cover of a metal album

Obsessed with the fact every single season ending has everyone getting a somewhat happy ending like it's not ideal but it's at least bittersweet and then there's Butcher who appears to only be getting worse.
Season two finale for everyone else: The Boys criminal records are cleared and work legitimately for the government Kimiko and Frenchie are happy, Hughie and Annie are together also Hughie has (what he thinks) is a legitimate job. MM is reunited with his wife and daughter.
Season two finale Butcher meanwhile: His wife, who he went into a downward spiral for a decade trying to find turned up alive only to be killed shortly after, making it all meaningless, he still has the objective to take down Homelander but even if he does get justice it won't bring back Becca.
Season three finale for everyone else: The Boys after a contentious time are reunited, Annie and Maeve have left the seven with Maeve being able to slip away and live a quiet life with her girlfriend who she's now back with, MM's relationship with his daughter has throughly improved and he's able to be honest with her about things, Hughie evaded any side effects of temp-V and his relationships with his friends have improved, Kimiko has her powers restored after reconciling with herself over them. They have an objective of taking down Neuman but the gangs all here, yay!
Season three finale for Butcher: The little purpose he had for not spiralling, the child that he promised his wife that he would look after, apparently went down the youtube alt-right pipeline and sided with his biological father and also the worst person alive, also from too many temp-V injections Butcher appears to have brain cancer and less than two years to live. This man hasn't caught a break since 2011.

The Boys: SN2.7
(DISCLAIMER: MY OPINION IS MY OWN AND CAN BE DEEMED INVALID TO THOSE WHO DON’T CARE FOR IT.)
Sorry for the delay but I’ve been really busy with work and I haven’t gotten much sleep due to this but nonetheless I was able to finish it and upload the commentary.
               BUTCHER, BAKER, CANDLESTICK MAKER
Tumblr media
Alright we’ve got ourselves a grown ass man whose clearly obsessed with STORMFRONT
Ik he’s gettin’ tired of seeing/doing the same shit over and over again
Maybe he’s one of the meme makers
Yep called that shit again
He better not become some fucking murder... smdh
“Congress?? Please what a bunch of corrupt cunts they are.” - BUTCHER
Tumblr media
(this line hit a little too close to home iykyk)
This congresswoman looks familiar... I can’t put my finger on it though
Alright so whose that ringing BUTCHER’s line?? (That’s a long ass number too)
“Mom I don’t want a fucking unicorn frappe.” - ANNIE
Bro wtf?!!!!!
“And Serge... no abandoning your post this time.” - MALLORY
rip to BUTCHER’s father
BLACK NOIR didn’t have to go in on ANNIE like that
ICONIC DIALOGUE
LAMPLIGHTER - “Okay. Different strokes, man.”
HUGHIE - “Please don’t say that in this context.”
“You know this isn’t healthy, man. Y-You can’t watch porn while the... sun’s out.”- HUGHIE
LAMPLIGHTER = ARSONIST
I like how HUGHIE said “nevermind” just to continue with his story.
LOL THAT TRANSITION BETWEEN HOMELANDER TALKING ABOUT ANNIE AND HUGHIE LOOKING AT THE SCREEN IS PURE GOLD
Tumblr media
“Come on do you want me to cuck? Or be the guy who fucks the wife?” - HUGHIE
“Yeah, come on. Let’s go fuck the wife. Con-sensually.” - HUGHIE
You know I never truly understood why the nickname “Billy” went with the name William.
ICONIC DIALOGUE
SAM - “What, no hug?”
BUTCHER - “You step one inch closer, and I’ll kill you quicker than that fucking arse cancer.”
SAM - “I bet you would.”
ROFL The way he slapped his finger away
Tumblr media
Beating the shit out of your kids does not equal “tough love”
Sooo.... LENNY committed suicide...
Wow, well I’ll be damned tha nazi bitch has a heart
I haven’t seen MAEVE use her powers in a minute!! That poor table.
Wait why is DR. VOGELBAUM in a wheelchair??? Ig HOMELANDER really did fuck his ass up.
Wow I really forgot M.M’s gov name is MARVIN.
FRENCHIE reminiscin’ -- You know i still remember when FRENCHIE said his dad smothered him with a hello kitty duvet lol
Watch me fuck around and learn KIMIKO’s sign language
Fish Bowl = Fixing Grievances
Bruh this whole church is toxic
“And boom, bitchies!” - LAMPLIGHTER
Tumblr media
“Your America’s second favorite lesbian couple, after all.” - ASHLEY
Whose the first?... Ellen and Portia??
“Ashley for once in your life be a fucking human being.” - MAEVE
Their watching a lego movie of the Blindside
... I think we all know HOMELANDER is lying to BECCA. He’s gonna snatch that little boy up in the middle of the night.
BUTCHER a whole maniac
Why do I feel like LAMPLIGHTER is gonna step HUGHIE up...
👀...
Tumblr media
HUGHIE RUN!!!
My mouth is really ajar looking at this hand scene
She’s walking a little too slow for me... I foresaw that shit!
BLACK NOIR is strong af! Jesus he’s throwing her around like a dog that vigorously shakes its head with a toy in its mouth.
STARLIGHT bro I’m gonna need you to get the fuck up! Don’t let this dude choke you out!
... once again... fuck almond joy’s
Y’all can do this reunion shit later. GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE BUILDING!
Tumblr media
ICONIC DIALOGUE
M. M. - “Kid, you are fucking unbelievable. All you had to do was watch porn.”
HUGHIE - “I didn’t know he was gonna set himself on fire?!?.”
I think we all knew this church for supes was all kinds of fucked up. But this whole scenario of EAGLE hunting his partner dressed up as a deer is on the stranger side to things.
Why tf did ANNIE’s mom look at KIMIKO like that?!?!
HOMELANDER lookin’ sick af!
BRUH IS THAT FUCKING CINDY!!!!????
“Oh, shit.” - THE DEEP
_______________

SWAN
Name: Elizabeth “Libby” Blum Birthdate: June 12th 1943 Years on Meridium: 30 Group: Castaways Attunement: Earth Gender: Cisgender female (she/her)
“How we need another soul to cling to.” ― Sylvia Plath
BIOGRAPHY
TW: Cancer mention in the first paragraph.
Like a blind man may not know he is blind until the world informs him, a mistake does not know she is a mistake until she is told. And told. And told. You were not planned and your frigid family rarely let you forget it. Though you coveted their love, your forced removal from their household at the age of eighteen was a blessing in disguise. Your move across the country to join the ranks of student protestors brought you freedom, a sense of newfound identity, and the love of your life. That life was on an upward track for many years – but time sours all things. The marriage began to dissolve and your breast cancer diagnosis only helped that process along. Just as your relationship, your body, and seemingly your life felt as if they were truly failing you, fate had one last laugh: a routine hike by the riverside with your family ended with you tumbling into the water. The rock on your scarred chest that pressed the air from your lungs took your consciousness as well. When it returned, you were on a strange beach and utterly alone.
Days blurred into months as you scouted the shore and the jungle for a means of getting home to your family. But the solitude didn’t last. Just before your island tenure reached a year in length, a woman found you. Kimiko, she introduced herself as, and led you back to a small group of fellow island dwellers. Unable to stomach returning to your solitary ways, you stayed. Your group both grew and shrunk over the years, your losses brought on more often than not by the unfortunate circumstances of the jungle. But no loss was as crushing as that of Kimiko. By then, you’d spent twenty-two years with the woman – she’d been everyone’s sounding board. Somehow, in her wake, all eyes turned to you. For the past eight years, you have served as the ersatz head of this this small group. But that voice still whispers in the back of your mind: was their choice of leader a mistake?
CONNECTIONS
Sage: Yours is a story that concluded long ago – isn’t it? After all, your years of marriage with Sage were about to come to a close. If the ground had not crumbled beneath you that day and sent you to this watery grave, you would have gotten a divorce. One that you had demanded after your simmering bitterness finally boiled over. But you’ve had three decades to stew. To grieve. To chastise your own impulses and imagine your husband raising your three girls alone. Without you. Little did you know, of course, that he followed you down that same river path. That you have both been living mere miles apart, breathing the same air, for thirty years. Has absence made your heart grow fonder again? Time will tell.
The Castaways: Though the label is one that the larger group of Meridiumers will curate, you do take some pride in this small group of Labyrinth survivors. Smaller than it used to be, to your chagrin, but they’re your people. For thirty years now, they’ve been your reason for survival. In them, you find connection. You keep Starlight safe. You laugh and learn alongside Atlas. You mourn and celebrate with Hope. At least among these people you feel necessary. You feel wanted.
STATUS
Swan is taken. Her FC is Jessica Chastain.
